Lights! Camera! Action! Oscar Loves Adam (and Steve) By Cliff Dunn

On Sunday, February 24, the 85th Academy Awards take place, an event with especial popularity within the LGBT community (there’s a reason the ‘Oscars’ are called the “Gay Olympics”). From the days of the silent film era of the early 20th Century, cinema has had a strong draw among gay and lesbian moviegoers; audience members who spent much of their waking life “pretending” to be someone they weren’t found sympathy and something relatable in performances given by the first superstars of the black-and-white silver screen. And since playing “dress up” and familiarity with the trappings of “make believe” were so integral to conveying these early film performances (where over-the-top facial expressions and dark-eye makeup took the place of dialog on the big screen), it wasn’t long before the Golden Age of Hollywood sported a distinct shade of lavender, both behind and in front of the camera. After the death of screen idol Rudolph Valentino—who was himself the subject of rumors about his sexuality both during and after his short life—one of the very first stars labeled a “sex symbol” was gay Mexican heartthrob Ramón Novarro, who remained a working actor all of his life (which ended with a lurid murder involving a sex-for-hire backstory). During Hollywood’s Golden and Silver Ages, the ranks of Moviedom’s biggest box office names included gay stars who bridged the gaps between all mediums, from comedy, drama, and foreign films, to become the most familiar household names for generations, among them Cary Grant, Laurence Olivier, and Montgomery Clift. Two of the last Hollywood actors placed under exclusive studio contract—Tab Hunter and James Dean—were among their era’s most popular closeted stars (particularly Dean, whose filmography includes a whopping three movies, “East of Eden,” “Rebel

Without a Cause,” and “Giant,” the last also starring fellow still-not-out superstar Rock Hudson, and the Greatest Fag Hag of All Time, Elizabeth Taylor). In more recent years, the Oscars have honored the portrayal of both gay characters and situations (from “Boys Don’t Cry” with Hilary Swank, to “Milk” with Sean Penn), although admittedly not always in a flattering light (“Dog Day Afternoon,” with Al Pacino, “Monster,” with Charlize Theron). Last year, 82 year old Christopher Plummer (Captain von Trapp in the “Sound of Music”—talk about your iconic films for gay audiences) took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of an elderly gay man fighting terminal cancer in “Beginners.” This year’s Oscar-bait includes gay fave Hugh Jackman, competing for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in “Les Misérables.” (The former “X-Men” star is up against Daniel Day-Lewis—who the Las Vegas bookies give a 99-percentplus chance of bringing home the Oscar gold for his starring turn in “Lincoln”—as well as Bradley Cooper, Joaquin Phoenix, and Denzel Washington). But Jackman is lately the subject (or is it the object?) of his own ‘gay drama’—those persistent rumors that the Aussie hunk is fluent in “the love that dare not speak its name.” It turns out that speculation—or is it wishful thinking?—about Jackman’s sexuality has hit home, but not in a good way, causing distress for his wife of 16 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, who has recently expressed that she’s had enough of the rumors. Don’t stress it, Deb and Hugh. As he prepares his Oscar speech for Sunday night, maybe Wolverine should recall the words of closeted Golden Age star and LGBT icon, Greta Garbo, who told a friend “We cannot help our nature, as God has created it.” On the other, it was Garbo who famously said, “I want to be alone.”

The 2013 Clay Court Classic was a huge Presidents Day Weekend success at the Lauderdale Tennis Club. A bevvie of pre-tournie events included a Draw Party on Thursday night at Mona’s in Fort Lauderdale. Bobby O’Dor and the South Florida Tennis Club (SFTC) welcomed tennis enthusiasts from around the world of all skill levels, in a tournament sanctioned by the international governing body, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA). A great time was had by all, both on and off the court. Photographer Jonathan Luke O’Brien seemed to be having a fun time with a few of the boys from Johnny’s on the Mardi Gras T Dance Cruise. Go-go boy Robby was on everyone like sweet on candy. Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC) Prexy Keith Blackburn had a great time, while Roberto and Jose-Luis went cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs (or in this case, Mardi Gras beads). Michael was celebrating his recent weight loss (which seemed to increase from 7 to 17 pounds with each telling) with his buds Eric and Tom. Justyn Hudson dressed in theme with a jaunty sailor hat (and little else). Kayla and Sam from SunServe made for quite the cute baby-doll couple. Tom from Tropixxx made sure the photogs got a picture of his “merchandise” (we think he meant the jewelry and toys on hand, and not the other “equipment” he had on hand). The Academy Awards party at Bill’s Filling Station on February 24 will be followed by a show hosted by Misty Eyez. She’s all growns up! New Moon turns eight years old on Saturday, March

2, and top-secret plans are in the works for a big anniversary blowout. G.S. Wiley was hitting the bars last night, notably Alibi. Philip Spataro and Orso Maschio popped in to see porn star Adam Rogue for his guest bartending gig on Monday night at Ramrod’s Big Bear Beer Bust. They were also there to attend Anthony Lordi’s guest bartending stint. Speaking of guests, Matt Skal has been seen hanging out at perennial Drive shill spot Rosie’s Bar and Grill a lot lately. oOver 60 talented high school musicians from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties will take part in the second annual Youth Pride Band concert. Founded last year by the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble after a rash of high profile anti-gay bullying incidents across the country, as a way to use music to promote understanding and fight bullying, participation in the Youth Pride Band has more than doubled. The concert program, entitled “Taking Flight,” will include standard band repertoire, show tunes, and popular music, with five outstanding students each receiving $1,000 scholarships to continue their musical studies. Following the Youth Pride Band performance, the students will be joined on stage by members of the Pride Wind Ensemble for a massed band that promises to be a musical experience audiences won’t soon forget. Her last coherent words before her death in 1968 were “codeine...bourbon,” which says a lot for the actress who almost was cast as Scarlet O’Hara—and smoked around 150 cigarettes a day! Angels Café An Explosion of Schmaltz; A Good Deal for Your Wallet By Richard David Chamberlain

Walk into the recently opened Angel Café at 2287 Wilton Drive (next to Village Pub) and encounter an explosion of schmaltz that will leave you breathless. To utter such a line in Wilton Manors, home of excess in so many ways, is to throw down quite the gauntlet. But we challenge you to find any restaurant in the city or surrounding burbs that even comes close to this confection of theatrics. The once-lifeless former Simple Delish diner has been transformed into a gilded Italian rococo testament to excess. Love it or hate it, you’ll be able to do anything but ignore it. With its marble floors, deep maroon walls, crystal chandeliers, gold crown molding, and its carved credenzas, the place is stuffed to the hilt with what On the breakfast side of the menu, the Angels can only be called expensive chotchkies. At the Special ($8.50) is an enormous platter featuring moment, the theme is Valentine’s Day Gone Wild. two eggs, with bacon, sausage or ham, home Tomorrow, it may be Easter on Ecstasy. “Stunned” fries or grits, plus two pancakes with maple is the word that comes to mind. St. Louis Gateway to America By Robert Elias Deaton

King Louis IX of France wasn’t the one who built Versailles, or married Marie Antoinette. He never had furniture named after him, or faced the guillotine. He led a gentler life, and was, in fact, the only French King to me named a Saint. And it is for Louis IX that Missouri’s St. Louis was named. Gay travelers to St. Louis can expect to find a diverse city where the LGBT community is integrated into its straight counterparts without pretension or insistence. St. Louis is really a very nice place to visit, and yes, even live. The most stunning symbol of the city is its famous Gateway Arch, built in 1965 and located in the Jefferson National Memorial Expansion. What appears today to be an ultra-clean modern design takes on added significance with the knowledge that this monument was actually designed in 1947 by famed Finnish-America architect Eero Saarinen. It took until 1967 to be opened to the public. A visit to this national treasure will set you back $10. Enter by the south leg of the Gateway Arch and experience life in St. Louis during the 1800s, returning to a time when the St. Louis Riverfront was bustling with steamboats, fur traders, and merchants. Travel up in the egg-shaped elevator to the 630-foot high top of the arch, and be prepared to see magnificent views of not only the city and the Mississippi River, but also 30 miles away into neighboring Illinois. No visit to St. Louis is complete without a stroll through Forest Park. Once home to the 1904 World’s Fair, these grounds comprise one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Forest Park is also the home of the Jewel Box, a magnificent (and newly renovated) greenhouse/party space that occupies nearly 17,000 square feet. Visit the flowers; visit the palms; visit the space. Our favorite hotel in St. Louis is the Chase Park Plaza (212 - 232 N Kings Highway Blvd.), an aging dowager that is splendidly maintained, at the

northeast corner of Forest Park, and in a neighborhood known for its small cafes, art galleries, and estate homes. Two added bonuses: a) the hotel is just four miles from the Anheuser-Busch Brewery (with its free Budweiser); and b) it has an in-house movie theater showing first-run films. For those into all things historical, Clementine’s (2001 Menard St.) is the oldest gay bar west of the Mississippi. Unfortunately, that is not enough of a trophy to keep this place booming with business. Go and check it out just to say you did, but expect attitude from the bartenders who have not learned the meaning of “smile, greet, and expect a big tip.” While they’ve gotten the tip part down, the welcoming sugar that is found in almost every other St. Louis club is in short supply here. Not so with J.J.’s Clubhouse & Bar (3858 Market St at Vandeventer St.) In this leather-bearDaddy hangout, the welcome mat is out, with a jocular ambience offering a hardy handshake or backslap to all who enter. To encourage the theme, men in leather get extra discounts. If your leather closet is bare these day, inside J.J.’s, The Cage: Toys4Boys+More has ample supplies of harnesses, chaps, vests, and the assorted whip, brought to you by CheapTrx. For a touch of elegance, head over to Just John’s (4114 Manchester Ave. at S Sarah St.). This is an upscale place, where playing dress-up is part of the scene. Truly Awesome Arms Part One By Tom Bonanti

When a client begins training with me, one of the first things he tells me is that he wants bigger, more defined arms. Because that is a pretty much a universal goal for anyone who hits the gym, I’d like to present a three-part series on how to build a really dynamite set of awesome guns. This week, let’s take a look at some basic principles of effective arm training. In order to build your arms, you need to work them twice a week, using about two exercises for biceps (front of the upper arms) and three exercises for triceps (rear of the upper arms). I suggest 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 12 reps for each exercise. Triceps require more attention because they are a larger muscle, making up nearly 75 percent of your upper arm development. I like to super-set tris and bis together on the same day. I separate arm training from back and chest training simply because if you really train like an animal, your arms will be utilized and “tired out” on back and chest day, and you’ll only be giving them your second best. As with all muscle groups, train your arms to fatigue and never to failure. This way you can enjoy the pump and avoid the tendonitis that comes from over-use. There are several biceps and triceps movements which can contribute to tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons) in the elbow. You must immediately stop using such an exercise or else cut down drastically upon the weight you are using. Ice your elbow and rub it down with an anti-inflammatory balm before, after, and during workouts. If pain persists for 10 days, consult your physician. According to bodybuilder and author Robert Kennedy, there are four vital qualities that make up a great arm: You need size. This includes thickness and roundness from the top of the arm near the shoulder to the bottom near the elbow.

You need good shape. This is largely hereditary. You are born with a certain amount of muscle fibers. You cannot increase the number of fibers, but through weight training you can make the ones you have thicker and stronger. To this extent you can shape or sculpt your muscles by the exercises you perform. You need separation. This is the distinct delineation of the various muscles that make up an arm. You need vascularity and definition. Here you’re talking about lowering your body fat through diet and cardio as you progressively build quality lean muscle mass. Veins grow in size along with the arms, especially if plenty of pump is achieved in your workouts. Next week I’ll talk about several exercises for biceps that are sure to have you filling out your sleeves in no time fast. You’ve seen me do this before, and hell, you’ve even helped me. Remember how I gained your trust, broke my way in, and tortured you? It wasn’t that I wanted to do it. I never do. It just happened. And yeah, that’s you screaming. Can’t you hear yourself? It’s annoying, so shut up. There will be no ambulance to help you. There will be no police investigation. No coroner’s report. No autopsy. No burial. No grave marker. No closure. Here you’ll lie, somewhere in this house, lost, screaming your damn head off. And I’ll stay here until I find the next one. It’s cliché, but there’s something to be said for trusting someone enough to “let him in,” to find that special guy you know is so right for you that he breaks down those walls that surround your heart. You’ll need never to hold back around him. With him you’ll be safe, living just as you are in his arms. Once you find him, you’ll toast with friends to your newfound happiness. You’ll joke about how he’s “too good to be true.” And everyone will know. (His name and face will show up on your Facebook profile for God’s sake.) He loves you, he says, and you know it’s true. There are flowers and kisses, snuggles and lovemaking. No need any longer to hook up with other guys. This is him: Your own HIM! But the man with whom you’ve fallen so in love isn’t real—not in the way you think, anyway. What you see, feel, hear, and taste is an illusion. The real man behind that beautiful mask is an emotional murderer. More than a heartbreaker: A heart-stopper. It took you so long to recover from your last

heartbreak. For the longest time, you wouldn’t let anyone into your heart, so you removed its doors, and after an excruciating mourning period and what seemed like an endless recovery, you felt better, at least enough to carry on by yourself. You cleaned up your heart, remade it white and pure— all the while knowing that never again would you let anyone in. But you did, didn’t you? You met me through a window. A part of your heart that you forgot even existed. You trusted me and you let me in. And of course you fell in love. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I really didn’t.
