The Besties, Dapur Fundraiser, and Boardwalk’s ‘Dating Game’
Besties Winners
By Rick Karlin
o
Absolutely everybody was at The Manor Restaurant and Complex for Oscars night and the concurrently-held Besties Awards. Hosts Mikey Verdugo and Joe Posa as Joan Rivers kept the action moving during Academy Awards commercial breaks, with Posa playing Rivers to the hilt (except he actually knew who the nominees were). In keeping with Joe/Joan’s theme, here’s a short Who’s Who of some in attendance. Caysie showed off her trim body in a black, form-fitting gown, walking the red carpet with Ruby Alexandra in black and white satin and Liv De’Mure in Armani Privvie. Rosy Barron from the Gibson Group and gal pal Heather Bohen played it casual at the bar. Richie had his hands full as he escorted Melissa Amy Morgan (showing off her toned arms in a black sequined halter gown), Shante La Rue in nude beaded Dior’able chiffon, and Amanda Austin in a silver metallic dress that she wore belted, as it was shown on the runway during Paris (Texas) fashion week. Mark Martin, Galen Weinzimer, Drew Miller, and Kevin Murdoch played with color blocking (or was that c**k-blocking?), Lady Guy, looking very Boca in her bejeweled glasses, snagged a few moments to grope Bobby Anderson. Joey and Wonkapup James were daring in leather and vinyl. James Mane, Joshua Seaton, Alex Merlino, Patrick, and Christian traveled all the way from Village Pub (along with owners Mark Byard and Greg Phelps) to attend. Jaclyn St. James in a red LB gown that showed off her Golden Globes chatted with Jennifer McClain, looking sultry in black and silver from Michael Coors (sic). Dee Dee Van Cartier looked like Cher
(a gypsy, tramp, and a thief) in rhinestones and metallic sequins. Jasmine Rose DuMont towered over her escorts with her “Snookie” bump. Craig, in black Tom Ford, and Lisa Anthony kept Laurel busy behind the bar. Alex Monge did his best to control the throngs of fans. While we’re on the topic of The Manor, Kidd Madonny will be spinning at the club’s “Pure Pride” party and the first 200 people attending will get a free digital download of his new CD! Congratulations also to 2013 Besties winners: Mark Martin/AHF (Best in Community), Heidi Shafran (Best Community Activist), Smart Ride (Best Fundraiser), Dean Trantalis (Best Attorney), Dennis Dean (Best Portrait Photographer), Pompano Bill (Best Bar Photographer), Kip Reynolds (Best Community Realtor), Boardwalk (Best Weekly Bar Promotion), Chad Bush (Best Event Promoter), Jasmine Dumont (Best New Female Entertainer), Mojo’s Barber Shop (Best Salon/ Spa), Jennifer McClain (Best Entertainer), Pride Factory (Best Retail Store), Nikki Adams (Best Female Impersonator), Michael P./Men’s Night Out (Best Networking Group), Georgie’s Alibi (Best Community-Supporting Bar), Rosie’s Bar and Grill THE SCENE continues on page 34

But Do the Drapes Match the Carpet? oEverybody’s favorite pink-clad lawyer, Elle Woods is getting the musical treatment after two successful movies that put star Reese Witherspoon in the pink (although we still hate her for being married to Ryan Phillippe). Still, we can’t wait to see Elle “bend and snap” in song form. See the ambitious Harvard-bound blonde on stage, at 7 p.m., at Bailey Concert Hall and Fine Arts Theater (3501 Davie Rd., Fort Lauderdale).
Bold as Hell: Rosabel

oDJ duo Rosabel (Ralphi Rosario from Chicago and Abel Aguilera from Miami) has previously landed five tracks on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play, so bring your damn boogie shoes to this Winter Party event. Brunch + Chic = Brunchic
oPaint the town green with floats, music, and entertainment when the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival marches into downtown featuring the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales! The free St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival has grown into a huge event, attracting thousands to the streets of downtown for a one-of-a-kind celebration of all things Irish. The pageantry and excitement begin with a traditional Irish Blessing at Huizenga Plaza (located at Las Olas Boulevard and Andrews Avenue), which will be followed by the running of the 2nd Annual Leprechaun Leap, a family fun-run that features parents and kids dressed in green racing down Las Olas Boulevard. Featuring parodies of interviews, exposés, investigative reporting, and more, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, etc. At 7:30 p.m., at Parker Playhouse (707 NE 8 Street Fort Lauderdale).

TRAVEL
Ibiza, Part II Dance the Night Away By Robert Elias Deaton
o
Ibiza is famous for its parties and nightlife and drinking into the wee hours of the morning. That reputation is not unfounded. While the beaches are full of white sand and naked bodies during the sun-filled days, it is after sundown that the Spanish island some 50 miles off the coast of Valencia shines brightest. There are seven major clubs on Ibiza, scattered around the Island, but all are within a 45-minute drive from Ibiza Town. Of the lot, the most famous is also the oldest and the closest—Pacha, famous for its fireworks (literally!) and its cherries that not only make up half of its logo but also are a featured addition to every drink. Created in 1973, this little old finca has grown into the most dominant clubbing brand in the world, with the Ibiza venue still very much the driving force and jewel in the crown. With a reputation for providing clubbing with style, it is unrivalled when it comes to adding some VIP pizzazz to proceedings. This playground for the rich and famous regularly features mega-star DJs like Guetta and Erick Morillo. Expect to pay 10 euros for a cab ride from Ibiza Town, €15 from neighboring Playa d’en Bossa, and €20-25 from San Antonio on the other side of the island. Pacha is also reachable from Ibiza Town on foot, in a nice 10-15 minute stroll from the center of the village to the club’s front door. For 100 euros, gain entrance to a

VIP table and feel like a prince (or even a queen). If electronic dance music is your thing, think Space Ibiza in Playa D’en Bossa. Owned by Ibicenco Pepe Rosello, Space Ibiza is one of the few clubs that offers daytime clubbing as well as nighttime excesses. Now a sprawling and modern discoteca, with five different areas, Space is Ibiza power-clubbing at its finest, with a particular emphasis on the best international DJs across all genres. Sundays at Space are particularly popular (with a cover charge to match), with its opening (May) and closing (September) parties for the season the best attended of any events. Expect to pay from 20-40 euros for parties at Space. Your ticket usually entitles you to one free drink. Drinks are priced at the Ibiza norm, with a Vodka Lemon costing 12 euros and a beer 8 euros. It’s expensive to play this well. The world’s biggest club is in Ibiza and is known as Privilege. With a Main Room like an aircraft hangar, Privilege is so large that the club could fit the whole of most of the other clubs in Ibiza inside it. Renowned for hosting spectacular and grandiose parties, Privilege provides layer after layer of club space to explore, as well as a swimming pool at its center. For a totally different nightclub experience, attend one of Privilege’s sex shows, which have to be seen to be believed. Yes, it’s real sex. Home of Manumission, an annual event/party that constantly strives to outdo itself, year after year. Free buses will get you to Privilege from Ibiza Town, San Antonio, or Playa D’en Bossa, or it’s a 10-15 euro cab ride from any of these places to the club. A not-to-be-missed event any night of the week. Other clubs on Ibiza include Amnesia, located in the middle of the island near San Rafael; DC10, near the airport on the road to Las Salinas; plus Eden and Es Paradis, located on the waterfront in San Antonio.

HEALTH
Truly Awesome Arms Part 2: Building Beautiful Biceps By Tom Bonanti
o
Last time, we began a discussion about making a commitment to building an amazing set of biceps. For maintenance, work biceps once a week for 20 minutes or so using an array of arm curls. To increase size and perfect your shape, work them two to three times a week for the same amount of time. Make sure to give your biceps 48 to 72 hours rest between workouts. This gives broken down muscle fibers a chance to recover, and grow thicker and denser. When performing your reps, never jerk or swing the weight because the biceps can tear easier than any other muscle when your form is clumsy. I combine biceps with chest, shoulders, or even legs, but never with back because any decent back routine is going to tax biceps, thus preventing you from really giving them your all. Here are four of my favorite exercises for building beautiful biceps. Do three sets of eight to twelve reps of each exercise, and make sure to stretch between exercises and sets.
➊
CABLE CURLS: These are a nice alternative to barbells and dumbbells. Attach a straight bar to the lower cable assembly and grasp the bar with a medium-width, underhanded grip. Stand upright with the arms straight and the bar resting in front of the thighs. Keep your upper arms tight at your sides, bend the elbows and curl the bar up to the chin level. Pause briefly, squeeze the contraction, and lower the bar back down slowly to starting position.
➋
STANDING DUMBBELL CURLS: Here’s a way to isolate each bicep. Stand upright, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides in a palmsin grip. Keep the upper arms motionless as you bend the elbows and curl the weights upward, turning the hands so that the wrists face the shoulders at the top. Pause, squeeze and lower back down twisting to the palms-in position.
➌
EZ CURLS: Standing with knees slightly bent, grip an EZ curl bar (this bar is made explicitly for biceps training, it is bent in the middle to facilitate your grip) with palms facing up, shoulderwidth apart. Curl the bar by flexing your arms at the elbow. Your elbows should remain close to your sides. Lower the weight in a controlled manner to starting position. Remember to hold a powerful contraction at the top and slowly lower the weight down on the negative.
➍
INCLINE DUMBBELL CURLS: Sit on a bench at a 45-degree incline. Keep your back straight, feet flat on the floor, and arms at your side. Curl the dumbbell by flexing arms toward the shoulders. (You can do single alternating arms, as well.) Slowly lower dumbbells in a controlled motion until your arm is extended. Make sure especially when you do dumbbell curls that you do not swing the weights too much. Remember to keep proper form and execute each rep in a controlled and calculated manner. Good luck with your workouts. Be consistent and patient, and don’t be afraid to push yourself. Contact me at trainertomb@aol.com with questions anytime, and check out my website at pumpnincgym.com.
