These Boots (and Sneakers, Birkenstocks, and Doc Martens) Were Made for Walking Florida AIDS Walk Hits Fort Lauderdale Beach, March 24 By Cliff Dunn

o

Join thousands of your friends and neighbors on Saturday, March 24th, for the 5K Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival, a heritage event created to raise awareness about the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic which remains at crisis proportions in Florida. The Walk and Music Festival raise money to support those Floridians—your friends and neighbors—who are living with HIV/AIDS. Participants in the Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival comprise a diverse family who recognize that HIV/AIDS affects us all people, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, and all the other things that make us unique. The Walk and Music Festival is a way of uniting and make a difference to those who need help the most, your friends and neighbors. The Walk and Music Festival consists of a fiveKilometer Walk that kicks off at Greater Fort Lauderdale’s South Beach Park. Staging for the Walk begins at 9:30 a.m. After leaving South Beach Park, the route continues north along SR A1A, and then returning back to its point of origin. All—that is, 100 percent—of the funds raised from the Florida AIDS Walk stay in Florida, to benefit the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Broward House, the Pride Center at Equality Park,

SunServe, Latinos Salud, the South Beach AIDS Project, the Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and other local service agencies and groups. Likewise, the Florida AIDS Walk benefits ongoing LGBT education, advocacy, specialized services (that meet the needs of the economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth, seniors, and peoples of differing abilities), specialized care for youth living with HIV/AIDS in a family-centered environment, and improving the lives of persons living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS. The Music Festival features world-class entertainment, including headlining performer and 10-time Grammy Award-winner Chaka Khan, the Queen of Funk Soul, and the talented and inspiring Tony Award-nominated Sheryl Lee Ralph, whose award-winning work includes the legendary Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” and her one-woman play, “Sometimes I Cry,” a production written and performed by Ralph that explores the lives, loves, and losses of women infected and affected by HIV. THE SCENE

Pridefest Redux, Florida AIDS Walk Pre-Games, and “Rent” is Coming Up By Rick Karlin

o

Who was at 2013 Pridefest? It’d be easier to say who wasn’t. It seemed as if everyone and their Aunt Betty (who you may not have realized was a dyke) traipsed through Holiday Park and the War Memorial Auditorium at one point or another. Hunter from Boardwalk passed out promo cards that read, “No Cover before 11 p.m.” (We thought Boardwalk’s dancers had no cover on, no matter what time.) I spun the “Wheel of Fortune” at Pridefest and won free brunch at Beefcake’s at Boardwalk. Speaking of naked boys (and when aren’t we?), yes that was Akash Abraham and an entourage down from NYC who were partying at Johnny’s during Pridefest weekend. Cubby Hole was packed from one dark corner to the other with folks stopping by for a drink (or two or three) before, during, and after the ’fest. Pride United’s next event is its “Spring Fling” in Wilton Manors’ Richardson Park on April 27. Mona’s is a favorite meeting spot for friends. Larry Scott, Bryan DuBac, Michael Anderson, Carl Conklin, Jr., Michael Papandrea, Paul Josef Klein, Ron Barzano, David Cook, Julian Cavazos ,Todd Devine, Scott Barzano, Robert Day, Kevin Mellow, Frank Zurek, and Frank Luz got their drinks on at the popular watering hole near Sear’s Town before heading over to Pridefest. Clinton and Cory worked the Florida AIDS Walk garage sale, which offered a treasure trove of campy pieces that folks snapped up. Arnie Cuarenta found a beautiful red silk shantung dress that fit like a glove, and posed for a picture (in a dog kennel!) in his new frock. And that was after only one cocktail. Chicago drag legend (in her own mind) Charity Case—looking like the world’s oldest dominatrix—picked up a pair of black vinyl fetish boots and police cap, but passed on the matching whip. Perhaps she has enough of her own already. Stoli Cocktails for $5 and Debra Hampton in the Manchester Room at Alibi make for a dangerous evening of fun. Ai, papi! Latinos Salud’s

“Sweet Candy” launch party will happen March 22, running from 7 p.m. until midnight. The Leather Men’s Brotherhood will take over Rosie’s on April 7 for a “Gear Incursion.” Julian Seepersaud was great at the inaugural Trivia Wednesday at Village Pub. He even kept his cool with drunks who were debating his answers. Bitch, what part of “The decision of the judges is final” did you not understand? Jimmy Chapman, Taz Segarra, and Gregory Addison (recently out of Logansport State Hospital) are planning to see Miss Richfield 1981 at The Manor, March 22 and 23. Are you? Ryan Salazar seems to be confusing Rosie’s for church, showing up every Sunday morning. Honey, that’s called brunch, not religion. Kimber White and Javi Giovanniare are fans of Kyle’s martinis at Rodeo on Wednesdays—or could it be they just like watching him work the shaker? Tuesday at Infinity Lounge: Belvedere Black Raspberry Spritzer, $6. (That’s all I remember.) Warren at Scandals— that bump on my forehead is your fault: You’re supposed to cut me off at six martinis. Rafito Cappa is looking for muscle guys who can walk on heels. Not for his own pleasure (although that might be a perk): It’s for a commercial that’s shooting in Miami. He’s looking for bear muscle guys, 5’11” to 6’2”. Look for him at Ramrod. Andrews Living Arts will mount a production of “Rent” in May. We received the audition notice a bit late, but what the hell, send them a head shot and résumé anyway to rdnshows@gmail.com /theguymag

THE WEEK ____________________

Ultra Weekend 2 Kickoff oThe kids like it so nice, the promoters do it twice. Miami’s biggest electronic music festival kicks off its second weekend with performances by Tiesto, Carl Cox, Avicii, Afrojack, Kaskade and many others. The city of Miami fought the festival over its ambitious two-weekend celebration, but in the end the festival won. Score one for the “little guy.” At Bayfront Park (301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).

It Isn’t Over Until the Fat Lady Sings oPart of the Knight Arts Challenge, Unexpected Operas in Unexpected Places is presented by the Florida Grand Opera. A standing room format allows the audience to experience opera like never before, with an exciting tango double-bill featuring two short operettas, Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s “Tango” and Ástor Piazzolla’s “María de Buenos Aires.” Ole! At 8 p.m., at The Stage (170 NE 38 St, Miami).

He’s Not Fat, He’s Fluffy oComedian Gabriel Iglesias, who coined the line “I’m not fat, I’m fluffy,” has a number of comedic milestones to his credit. After appearing in 2006 on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” his fan base has exploded, and so has his career, including regular turns Comedy Central an appearance in the 2012 stripper-fest “Magic Mike” (albeit thankfully with his clothes on). At 8 p.m., at Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood).

Saturday

3/23

Keys On Fire (Girl!) oSinger Alicia Keys has won 14—count them, 14—Grammy Awards. Seriously. She’s also sold millions of records, and consistently receives praise from both critics and fans, a hard thing to maintain in a fickle show business. Her latest single, “Girl On Fire,” launched Keys back into the mainstream, and the album of the same name was released to moderate critical acclaim. See her “Set the World on Fire” at the Triple-A, a chance to see the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter up close and personal. At 8 p.m., at the American Airlines Arena (601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).

Your Body, My Body oTony Award-winning director Michael Leeds’s presentation of “Body Awareness” has critics (including ours) falling over themselves with praise. The 2009 Drama Desk Award-winning play was recently called “a perfect storm of excellent writing, a strong ensemble, and adept direction.” The play, set in a fictional Vermont town, concerns a lesbian professor who organizes Body Awareness Week at her small college. Offering climactic scenes and an engrossing story, “Body Awareness” is a guilty cultural pleasure of which you should not deprive yourself. Thursdays through Sundays, now through April 7. At Empire Stage (1140 N. Flagler Dr., Ft. Lauderdale).

Pomperdale A Bit of Brooklyn, A Bit of Schmaltz, and a LOT of Pastrami By Richard David Chamberlain

o

We have to admit it. Deli food is the stuff of legend, and everyone has their own go-to favorite dish, especially when you’re faced with the multipage menus that normally top tables where the die-hards gather to “talk story.” In our case, it’s a Reuben sandwich--an admittedly sloppy mess of a thing that includes stacks of corned beef, Swiss cheese, drained sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, and is traditionally held together between two pieces of thick toasted Rye bread and is then grilled to meld all the flavors. We say “traditionally” and “norover in the bagel marathon. When Greg says its mally” because during a recent visit to Pompergood, you know you’re eating the next best thing dale New York Style Deli (3055 E Commercial to a bagel baked in Brooklyn. TRAVEL

Lima, Peru Land of the Sun By Robert Elias Deaton Peru hugs the neighboring South American countries of Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Chile, and Bolivia like a Wonder Bra, its vast seashore along the Pacific Ocean giving it the kind of sun-drenched beaches that act as magnets for savvy travelers worldwide. Historically, Peru was home to the Incan Empire, the largest organized civilization in pre-Columbian America. That’s the empire that gave rise to Machu Picchu, located in the Cusco region of southern Peru and easily the most culturally significant Inca sanctuary in the country, and the centerpiece of Peru’s growing tourist industry. For gay tourists, however, it is the nightlife and nearby beaches of Lima, Peru, that provide much of the attraction in this Land of the Sun. Lima is more than just the capital of Peru; it is its largest city, with 9 million inhabitants, of which some 150,000 are estimated to be gay or lesbian. The predominance of the Roman Catholic Church there makes a realistic count impossible, since the religion officially condemns homosexuality in any form, and outright displays of any same-sex affection are discouraged. That does not mean that Lima isn’t a fun place for gays to visit. In reality, the Peruvian people are a friendly, dramatic lot whose beauty is legendary. Lima itself has been around since 1535, when Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro came to town. There are six-hour non-stop flights available to Lima at a round-trip price of $702 on TACA airlines, which will be officially changing its name

to Avianca sometime this year. No visa is required for U.S citizens and travel to Peru is relatively safe, despite an active drug trafficking route across the border between Peru and Columbia. On the subject of drugs, be aware that pharmaceuticals that are strictly controlled in the U.S. are available over-the-counter in Lima, including Rohypnol. U.S. customs officers will confiscate those drugs from hand-carried baggage and checked luggage. Ditto coca-leaf tea bags, which are sold by the box in supermarkets in the city. Consuming tea made from these leaves will expose you to small amounts of coca alkaloids (which is the source of cocaine), and will make you test positive for cocaine, an unpleasant surprise for those who work in stateside industries where drug-testing is mandatory (do you remember Elaine and the poppy-seed bagel on “Seinfeld”?). The Miraflores neighborhood of Lima is known for its gardens, beaches, upscale stores, and homes, and one of our favorite hotels in the city: The Miraflores Park (Ave Malecón de la Reserva1035) with specular views of the Pacific Ocean. Miraflores also houses several of the city’s popular gay bars and clubs. Of these, our favorite is Bar BoBo (Manuel Bonilla 109) where gays and lesbians chow down on tapas and listen to American hits via a live D.J. For dancing, try Club La Sede (Ave 28 de Julio 441), especially popular on Friday and Saturday nights. Another great club (this one in the nearby Lince district) is Andel Bar (Belisario Flores 270), which has no sign. Just look for the bright yellow house on Belisario Flores, ring the doorbell, and smile pretty. We kid you not. A recent addition to Lima is a billboard that makes its own water, complete with a spigot at its base. Since Lima lies at the northern edge of Atacama, the driest desert in the world, this billboard (located at kilometer marker 89.5 on the Pan American Highway) is a treasure, producing 10,000 gallons of free water a year. Stop and taste. /theguymag

HEALTH

Truly Awesome Arms Part 3:

Tremendous Triceps By Tom Bonanti

o

Triceps make up about two-thirds of your upper arm, so it is logical that the bigger and more defined these babies are, the more massive your arms will look. The triceps are responsible for the movement of extension of the elbow and produce motion of the forearm. Because of their larger size you need to work tris longer and harder than biceps. Hit triceps twice a week using three-to-four exercises of three-to-four sets of eightto-12 repetitions. Use free weights for triceps to give you a better range of motion and to produce a fuller muscle. Machines are great in a pinch, but once again, free weights get better results. Always make sure you get a good stretch for tris, especially as you conclude the workout. Stretching helps bring out the separations and detail in the muscle. Close-Grip Bench Presses: This exercise takes your triceps through its full range of motion. Lie face up on a flat bench, feet firmly planted on the floor. Take a barbell or E Z curl bar from the rack (or have your trainer or workout partner hand it to you). Use a narrow grip so that your hands are only two-tothree inches apart. Keeping your elbows close to your body, lower the weight to your lower sternum, and immediately push upwards. Always begin with a light warm-up set. This exercise is great for mass building. Triceps Extensions: Start this exercise by holding a lat machine bar with your hands two-to-eight inches apart. Now press downwards from your chin until your arms are straight (just barely locking out the elbow). Return and repeat. Most bodybuilders keep their elbows tucked in at their sides during this movement. This exercise can also be performed with a rope instead of a straight bar or lat machine bar. Bent-Over Triceps Kick Backs: Don’t be surprised if, upon examination, you find that one of your triceps is bigger or stronger than the other. This is common, and this exercise will help build strength and symmetry in both arms. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and hold on to a rack or bench with the other hand. Raise and lower (kick-back) the dumbbell at an even rate, keeping the upper arm in line with your torso and parallel to the floor. Keep your upper arm tight against your waist throughout. guymag.net

Lying Triceps Extensions or (“Skull-Crushers”): Lie on your back on a flat bench and hold a barbell or E Z curl bar at arm’s length above you. Lower it slowly to the forehead and again raise the bar to arm’s length. This is a more advanced exercise, and you may have to wait until your tris are ready for this one. Remember, triceps are a larger muscle and require more work than biceps. You may not see them, but if you really desire a mighty set of guns, you’ve got to work your triceps. LOVE JONES

Infinitesimal, Fractional, Unique Li’l Ol’ Me: A Pride Month Affirmation By Justin Jones

o

I am not a social security number. I am not a mailing address. I am not a paycheck. I am not a bank account, a mortgage, a bill, a face, or an object of

any kind. I am not what you think I am. I am not who you think I should be. I am an infinitesimal fraction of the population of a country, a continent, a planet. I belong to a species that’s lived for just a fraction of time in a single solar system located on the edge of a plain galaxy that is part of in an infinite expanse of cosmos. But I am a unique being with my own specific DNA. I can sing you a song and I can write you a letter. I can dance with you and laugh at your jokes. I can marvel at the universe and dream of tomorrow. I can hope. I can wonder. And I can love. I am a one-and-only—once-in-a-lifetime, or any lifetime for that matter—piece of an equation that part of an even greater and more incomprehensible improbability. I rose up out of a big bang that led to a star that led to an Earth that led to an evolution that led to humanity. I am made from the dust of the universe. And I am Me. Today, I am not proud of my sexuality, my gender, my race, or my class. I am not proud of how generous I am or how high I dream. I am not proud of what I’ve done or whom I’ve know. Today, I am proud of something bigger than myself. I am proud of Us. Of you and me. I am proud that within you resides ingenuity,

creativity, courage, and love. I am proud that we can express emotion and think for ourselves. I am not proud of who we are. I am proud that we are. I am proud that I can say “I love you” to you— yes you, reading this—and honestly, really, truly, absolutely, mean it. You and me, we are two human beings, completely different in every way, but you, no matter the color of your skin or who you take to bed, you are an astonishing, beautiful thing. You are my brother. You are my sister. You are my partner-incrime in these stars of ours. Yes, I love you, and though our memories are different, we know what it’s like to be heartbroken, to feel alone, to feel bullied. We know what it’s like to have ambition, to love someone, to dream and to hope. We are all in this together, and no matter our differences, together shall we stand mighty. guymagyoutube
