It’s just great fun, plain and simple.” Cole, who splits his time between Georgie’s Alibi and Bill’s Filling Station, points to the extraordinary variety of stores and businesses on the Drive. “We’ve got grilled cheese shops, yogurt and ice cream shops, vintage candy stores, and adult toy spots.” Given his choice, what would he add to the street’s complexion? “Some cheap gas on the Drive would be great.”

10 Gayborhood Men You Should Know By Grant James

Guys of the Gayborhood come in all shapes and sizes, from o The five continents and all walks of life. Many of them can be found on Wilton Drive, working, playing, and even making a difference. Here are 10 Drive Guys, some of whom you may already know, but we think there all worth a second (or third) look.

LEOR BARAK The co-owner (with his dad) of the Drive’s newest comfort foodery, New York Grilled Cheese Co. (as well as Nuts About Yogurt), Leor was born in Israel, raised in Toronto, and brings an international sensibility that’s combined with a strong sense of pride in his adopted home, Wilton Manors. Among the things he most cherishes about his digs is the sense that there’s something always going on. “We love getting out and working with the people in this great community,” says Barack, who—in addition to participating in activities for the Smart Ride, Broward House and SunServe—teaches nutrition classes for the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. (Then, with a twinkle in his eye, he offers you a sample of Misty Eyez Peanut Butter yogurt and makes you a SoHo Sweet Cheeses sandwich. Heaven.)

JASON KING The Legislative Affairs Manager for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Jason splits his time between the Gayborhood and Tallahassee, where he spearheads lobbying initiatives for the powerful service organization. You might not realize that behind the winning smile (and great hair) is a compassionate, determined young man on a mission. “It’s really taught me humility,” the Los Angeles native acknowledges. “It’s fulfilling to know that I’m accomplishing something that’s bigger than me and our community. Being able to contribute to global public health: I couldn’t ask for anything else.”

DAVID KITCHEN The smiling face behind some many great times at Rosie’s Bar and Grill, David is an activist with strong calves and stronger ambition. “I love getting to interact with our community and being involved in volunteer work.” And about those calves” “Every year, anything related to the Smart Ride is the highlight of my days,” says the Phoenix, Arizona transplant.

JOSHUA SEATON You may have seen his face (or his tattoos) at any of a number of danceable South Florida venues. The tattooed stud—who serves drinks at the Drive’s Village Pub—has bartended in Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Limoncello and the Green Room (formerly China White), as well as at Boom in Wilton Manors, and could be seen behind the turntables at many a Sunday T-Dance at the late Voodoo Lounge. Seaton, whose hometown is “Miami, bitch!” says that working on Wilton Drive is “just like working with your family. It’s very special to me.” Ask him—nicely—to show you his ink.

JOHNNY HOFF Look up the definition of “contagious smile” in Webster’s and you’ll see a picture of Johnny’s face (ok, not really). The Kansas Cityborn-and-raised 20-something has lived in the Gayborhood for over three years, and has been a familiar face to Drive-goers— whether serving at Tropics or singing the best karaoke numbers at Boom and Bill’s. Hoff says he loves going to piano bars. “On any given night you’re going to hear a Frank Sinatra song,” he explains. “I LOVE Frank Sinatra.” Although he has hundreds of friends among the servers and bartenders of the Gayborhood, Johnny says there’s a special place in his heart for one in particular: boyfriend Jason Basilico, bartender at Rumors’ Bar and Grill. JASON TAMANINI For all that he resembles a dressy (and dreamy) first-year college student, the capable and energetic Jason Tamanini is an “old pro” in South Florida’s entertainment scene. A familiar face as GM of the old China White, the Philadelphia native also opened South Beach’s popular MOVA before bringing his unique and dynamic management style to The Manor Restaurant and Entertainment Complex, which combines a WeHo vibe with a local sensibility. Jason says he values his relationship with Manor owners Paul Hugo and Bret Tannenbaum, who he says “give me freedom to create.” The stylish and easy-on-the-eyes Tamanini says that a fashion trend he would like to see disappear—on the Drive and everywhere else—is “oversized pants hanging off of your butt; it’s disgusting.” Who would argue?

BRYAN NOSAL The General Manager of Steel Gym (formerly Island City Health and Fitness) is a friendly and familiar site to both members of the popular fitness club and the other establishments on the Drive. A fitness enthusiast who admits to disliking “anything abs-related,” Brian says that, of all the things he appreciates about working on the Drive, he most enjoys the people. “The community is here to support each other,” Nosal explains. “We may be in these different groups and be completely different individuals, but we all stick together.” On occasion, you can find Bryan “sticking” to Tanner’s outside bar at The Manor. “She makes a drink called the “F***ing Lovely,” says Bryan. “And it is.”

JOHN TAVALIERI The Detroitborn hunk keeps stands post inside and outside The Outlet, where fashion and sensible pricing come together in a perfect fit. Friendly and studly John makes it easy to shop, offering low-pressure service and a smile that could light a small city. Tavalieri says that for him the best part about working on Wilton Drive is “Being paid for essentially socializing with the city. The eye candy doesn’t hurt either,” he adds. Like the guy from the men’s shaver commercials, John isn’t just a sales associate at The Outlet, he’s a regular customer, too. He says his favorite thing that he’s purchased there is a Bodhisattva necklace. “It’s said to protect against negative or dark energy,” he explains. “I still have it. It’s beautiful.” It takes one to know one.

BRENDAN CORMAN He’s young, cute, successful, and he is part owner of one of the Drive’s most successful new watering holes and eateries. Is there a downside to this? Brendan, a West Palm Beach native, is GM at the newly opened Rumors Bar and Grill, although he cut his professional teeth working for years at the Alibi. Cutie Corman appreciates the diversity of our vibrant Gayborhood community, both at Rumors and elsewhere. “Customers are all ages there’s no target demo. The bartenders each bring in their own unique crowds.” He notes that working on the Drive is “always exciting. You never know what it’s going to be.”

During the World AIDS Museum opening reception and exhibit at the Stonewall Museum and Archives, event co-chairs David Friedland and Steven Stagon and Museum Chairman John Ramos welcomed guests including Rob Delehanty, Lee Rubin, Irwin Drucker, Jim Walker, Cecil Isaacs, Bruce Gelly, Glenn Goldberg, Don Button, Jeff Helyer, Ari Margo, Dave Starr, Bob Ewart, and Robert Lee (no relation to the Civil War general, we think). Imagine my surprise when I stopped in at Alibi and spotted Larry Wolfe, formerly of Chicago. Oh, Gurlene! The stories I could tell you about this handsome man would pop your pin-curls. Congrats to Kat Riggins for her win at the Stoli Cocktail Challenge. The scrumptious bartender, formerly of Downtown’s Coyote Ugly and the late Sea Monster, is back in town, slinging drinks at Kat’s Candy Bar at Boom. Seniors at the Pride Center were on the TV station Local 10 5:30 p.m. newscast. Some of the couples, who have been together for a half-century, shared their thoughts on marriage equality during a discussion about the oral arguments before the Supreme Court. Melissa Morgan and her fellow insane asylum escapees—um, excuse me, “performers”—kick off a new show concept, “Don’t Try It,” Thursdays at Rumors Bar and Grill, beginning this month. (By the way, is the wine glass in Rumors’ logo half-full or half-empty? I guess that depends if Melissa’s been sitting in front of it.) If The Manor’s rockin’, don’t bother knockin’ when DJ Karin Ward kicks off TGIS (Thank God It’s Sunday) T dances—I’m talking to you, Anais Reny Reani and Dennis Sea. At Village Pub, you can now get harpooned before taking in a Key West Sunset. John Hitchcock, Vincent Corrales, Luis Ruiz, Joseph Foti, Michael Antol, Charity Case, Ken Farley, and David were all ready to “Sing out, Louise.” (If you know that reference, you probably enjoy show tunes night at the Pub, too.) On Wednesday nights, Rodeo offers half-priced martinis all evening. One was enough for Dorene Stanfield Lovelace; she barely was able to finish her meal. Jessy Burgos rocks that karaoke mic at New Moon. Will someone please go water the plants at the

Okay, so that was Jennifer McClain on Saturday night enjoying The Capitol Steps concert before heading to the Alibi with Larry Wilson, where they cheered on Kwanza Jones, before moving over to Village Pub for Justin’s Birthday with Michael Smith, David Denton Garwood, Jeff Kiltie, James Foster, and Anthony Aj Solmon. She stumbled over to Bill’s, and then snuck over to New York Grilled Cheese Co. Jennifer Freedman’s cocktail submission for Infinity Lounge’s cocktail contest is a Dirty Possum. I wonder if Florida’s Dame Edna drinks it. Nelson Benzing was spied enjoying a spinach and feta omelet for an al fresco breakfast at Courtyard Café. Congrats to Steve and Dennis at Humpy’s Pizza: they’ve gotten an entry in Urban Dictionary.com. To quote, “Humpalicious: delicious food prepared and served by very attractive people; originated in a South Florida pizzeria called ‘Humpy’s’.” Love your pizza, guys, but I’ve never been waited on by the dude pictured in your ad. (Of course, I’ve never had a waiter at Beefcakes who looks like the twink in their ad either.) Congratulations also to Nikki and Steve Rose at Java Boys, who a received a proclamation from presented by Mayor Gary Resnick, for their support of charity programs that support the City of Wilton Manors.

Because they are. Tasteless? Maybe. But as acting as a promotional video for the release of an upcoming relationship “how-to” book is the best use of guerrilla marketing that I’ve ever seen. The line that nailed it? When a sassy little nugget says “sometimes, I think it would be easier if we were all lesbians”. To which an even sassier token black girl chimes, “amen, sista”.

ACTIVIST DENOUNCES GAY MARRIAGE AT NOM RALLY An openly gay member of the National Capital Tea Party Patriot, Doug Mainwaring, attacks gay marriage at the recent NOM (National Organization of Marriage) rally. The activist said while he is openly gay, he believes marriage should be between a male and a woman. He said it is “not progressive legislation, it is regressive”, and that it would “undefine children”. Fortunately for the self-conflicted man, should gay marriage materialize, I doubt he will have to worry about being whisked off of his feet and carried over the threshold anytime soon. .

Joe’s Seafood Shack Where the Shrimps Are Colossal and the Crabs Are King By Richard David Chamberlain

The neon “vacancy” sign is flashing on the outside of the newly opened Joe’s Seafood Shack, on North Federal Highway. The only problem is that there was no vacancy on the night we visited—every seat in the place was taken, as well as every parking place in the lot outside. This newest branch of the franchise fish hut (there are over 150 outlets in 30 states plus the District of Columbia) is a fun, noisy, and predictable place where big eats are the order of the day. Barcelona, Spain Lose Your Heart and Your Way By Robert Elias Deaton

It’s not often you arrive in a city hoping to get lost. But such is the charm of Barcelona that the twisting streets, the amazing architecture, and the overtly friendly people beckon you to wander and discover unexpected treasures around nearly every corner. Since often the locals will be just as lost as you are, it’s little wonder that Barcelona is a city that doesn’t run on a strict timetable. Everything skews late here, including dinner, which is typically eaten around 10 p.m.—most likely because it will take you that long to find your restaurant of choice. But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain. It stretches along the Mediterranean Coast between the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and is best known for its architecture, much of which was designed by Antonio Gaudí, whose most famous design, the Sagrada Família (Calle Mallorca 401), dominates the city as its most visited tourist destination. Begun in 1882, the project was placed in Gaudi’s hands a year later, and construction on the Catholic Church continues to this day. Estimates are that it is a little over half finished, with a new completion date estimated to be 2026—the hundredth anniversary of Gaudí’s death. Gaudí’s trademark colorfully tiled, curved and vaulted designs inspired by nature are found everywhere in Barcelona—from the lampposts in the touristy Plaça Reial (Barri Gòtic) to the outstanding Park Güell ( Gràcia district), a massive garden that overlooks the city and is home to the Gaudí Museum. These designs are as fascinating as the Catalonian people who occupy the city, beautiful and bronzed with a laid-back attitude that charms with its vulnerability. Fly to Barcelona in non-stop ease on American Airlines, which offers daily non-stop service from Miami International Airport for $1,150. Travel from Fort Lauderdale is a bit less expensive on U.S. Air ($1,086), but requires a stop in Philadelphia with an hour-and-a-half layover. The main throughfare through town is called Las Ramblas. The highway runs from the port dissecting Barcelona and ending right before L’Eixample, the gay area of town. Las Ramblas is guymag.net

THE place to people watch, and it’s full of street performers whose talents range from the absurd to athletes whose next stop is Cirque du Soleil. It’s a pedestrian walkway that is not only packed with people (mostly tourists) but also souvenir shops, bird aviaries, markets, flower kiosks and cafes. It is also the home of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, one of the foremost opera houses in the world. The theatre holds an audience of over 2,000, with the official season running from October through July. The Liceu has burned down twice since its original construction in 1847, but the front façade is the original, and tours are given daily at 10 a.m. and well worth exploring even if opera isn’t your thing. When staying in Barcelona, you may be tempted to stay at the Axel Hotel Barcelona (Carrer Aribau 33). While is it part of the gay-owned chain of hotels, this particular branch (the original) has pathetically slow Internet service, lackluster housekeeping, and mediocre breakfast. At $200+ per night, you can do better for less. Just down the street is the Cram Hotel (Carrer Aribau 54), with sophisticated elegance, a trendy lounge bar, rooftop pool, and the Michelin-rated Gaig Restaurant for the finest Catalan cuisine. All rooms at the Cram feature bedside controlled lighting system and free wifi Internet access. The best news is the location: just around the corner from the busiest gay clubs in the city, highlighted here next week. /theguymag

Get Pumped and Stay Pumped This Spring By Tom Bonanti

It’s spring: time to freshen up the yard, your wardrobe, and your routine at the gym. Doing the same old thing the same way every time is not only the definition of insanity. It’s monotonous and counterproductive. That’s why it’s important to learn about new routines and the latest findings about fitness and muscle growth, so that your workouts remain rewarding—and fun! This week, I’d like to go over a few dynamite techniques that will bring excitement and freshness to your workouts.

Supersets are a great way to pick up the mo-

mentum and help you get more done faster. Technically, a superset is when you train two opposing muscle groups (i.e. biceps versus triceps, back versus chest) with only a small break between exercises. For example, you may do a set of flat bench barbell presses for chest, and then move quickly using the same barbell for a bent-over row exercise for your back. Go back and forth for three sets of each. Take a brief break and then alternate incline dumbbell presses and wide-grip lat pull-downs. Supersets create balance and joint strength, and allow one muscle group a brief rest while you blast its opposing muscle group.

Compound sets are especially effective

if you have a problem muscle group that won’t grow. Compound sets employ two or more intense exercises for the same muscle group. For example, a standing barbell curl can be combined with a preacher curl to really fry those biceps. Perform a set of barbell curls to exhaustion, and then move to a set of killer preacher curls to isolate those twin peaks. Compound sets bombard a muscle group, working it to exhaustion. In my opinion, compound sets are the most effective way to help a muscle group get bigger and stronger. guymag.net

Forced reps are a great way to push muscles just a little harder, once they’ve been pretty much exhausted. Just when you think you can’t do another curl, press, or squat, recruit someone else’s muscles to help you! That’s right: Get a trainer, partner, or buddy to help you squeeze out a couple of forced reps before you rack your weights and call it quits. Learn to accentuate the negative – at least with your reps. When I train clients, I’ll often have them focus on the negative or eccentric contraction during an exercise. For example, during a bicep curl, explode as you bring the weight to your chin (concentric or positive contraction). Then, as you lower the weight (eccentric or negative contraction), slow down and focus while you push your muscles to a new level of fatigue. Try doing negatives with bi’s, tri’s, chest, legs, etc., once a month to maximize their size and strength. Don’t overdo negatives, or you may risk injury or overtraining.
