When Out Magazine named Joe Gauthreaux “Hottest DJ of the Year” in 2005, it was a very different world. That year, Junior Vasquez, Manny Lehman, Victor Calderone, and Tony Moran dominated the gay circuit scene. It was close to impossible for aspiring DJs to get their chance on the decks. Gauthreaux was one of the few who managed to break through the glass ceiling of the DJ booth. “Fighting makes you stronger,” he says now. “The long battle to make a name for myself on the dance floor taught me that to stay in the game you have to constantly keep working like nobody knows who you are.” With a face like his, who can forget him? Joe Gauthreaux spins at “SENSE,” one of the official events for Miami Beach Gay Pride Week, at Nikki Beach on Friday, April 12.

Joe Gauthreaux The Beauty Behind the Beat By Shane Gallagher Do you ever pinch yourself and think, holy shit, I actually get paid to do this? Every day. I never take for granted the fact that I have a job I love. It’s the best feeling in the world.
What are some tracks burning up your dance floor right now? I’m really into Etienne Ozborne right now. Just about anything he produces is on my playlist.
What has been your biggest achievement? My remix of The Wanted’s “I Found You,” went all the way to number one on the Billboard Chart. To work on a project like that and to know that your remix helped get the song to the top position is a real feeling of accomplishment.
You say you’re a textbook Leo. What does that mean about you? Leos are very creative and love showcasing our talent. We’re also very loyal and protective of those we love.
Of course, every rose has its thorn. What are some of the ones you’ve experienced? Club politics gets to me. I’m one of those people who wish everyone would just get along. What do you look for in a track? I love all kinds of dance music: tribal, vocal, house, and progressive. For me, the track has to be interesting. Does it do something fun or unique? Does it get my butt to move? (Laughs) That’s important! Has there been a track that you loved but it didn’t work for your dance floor? I play some EDM infused tracks in my set, actually more and more these days, but not nearly as much as I listen to on my own time. I like dubstep, Tiesto, Zedd.
SUNDAY, APRIL 14 Parade and Festival Parade: 12 to 1 p.m., Ocean Drive, from 5th to 15th Streets, Miami Beach Festival: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Lummus Park, Ocean Drive, between 10th and 13th Streets, Miami Beach
Would you date another DJ? Probably not, at least not one that was in my scene. I don’t want to be competing with someone I’m dating. What’s next for you to accomplish? My goal right now is to produce and write my own tracks and songs. It’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while and hopefully you’ll be hearing some of it soon. Looking into the future, who will you thank when you win your first Grammy? First of all, thank you for thinking that I might ever do that! I would have to thank everyone who has ever come out to hear me spin and supported me over the years. I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for them.

THE SCENE
Easter Bonnets, Miss Kitty Purrs and Pours, and Polo Anyone? By Rick Karlin
o
The Drive was awash in bonnets on Easter Sunday. David Packard and Troy Quast’s Easter soiree was the place to be. Clayton Stults, Jeff Brunelle, Levi Sterling Crocker, John Schilling II, Josh Martin, Chad Crow, Scott Hass, and many others paraded around in their finest Easter bonnets, and enjoyed a wonderful spread (and the food was good, too.) Nick Hatziantonio and Daniel W. Wolfe are just two of the folks who were looking forward to “Dancing with the Stars South Florida, Season 3,” which brought a host of the gay-leratti to The Manor on April 8, to benefit the non-profit Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. Speaking of exercising for a good cause: Arnie Cuarenta was seen peddling his ass on Wilton Drive, (nothing new there), but this time he was on a bicycle! The Gay Polo Tournament (and, no it’s not guys standing around wearing Ralph Lauren pullovers) kick-off party is themed “Jeans and Jewels,” and will be held at the International Polo Pavilion in Wellington on Friday, April 12. Rosie’s Spring Break Party on April 2, a benefit for Special Olympics of Broward County, was a huge success. Patrick Weber and Ryan Deter like Mondays at Boom. Is it the bingo, $2 drafts, $3 margaritas, or the gay porn that draws ’em? Steel Gym (formerly Island City Health and Fitness) is getting rid of its steam room. A rebuild would cost beau coup bucks, which management feels isn’t feasible at present. Don’t fret: There are still plenty of places in town for you to get ‘steamed’, Cowboy. The Easter Bonnet Contest at Bill’s was a hoot. Who won? Who cares? We had a blast with our hostess, the legendary Miss Kitty—whom Guy Editor Cliff Dunn swears looked exactly the same when she was slinging drinks at the late, great Copa (then owned by local real estate magnate John Castelli) back in the mid-1980s; what’s her secret? If you go to TeeJay’s Facebook page, you can enter to win a $50 gift card. The Gold Coast Derby Girls took over Humpys for one night last week. Where was Helen Wheels? On April 1, Infinity Lounge served a special martini called April Showers. How did they man-

The ladies let their eggs hang out for the Easter Brunch at Lips age to arrange for all that thunder and lightning that night? Dylan Marsh and Toby Hoshman returned from vacation and their first stop was Java Boys, so I guess the rumors about the addictive quality of the coffee is true. Speaking of coffee, who was that handsome young man chatting with Charity Case at Starbucks, and what was up with the package they exchanged, which contained a pair of thigh-high vinyl boots? Is Charity giving up being the world’s oldest dominatrix? Rod Selva was spied dining at Rodeo with Vaan Camp and Gerardo Selva. Willow Bierce, Mercedes Monterro, Ale Perdomo, and Heather Carr were at Boardwalk to lend support to Crystal Chandelier. I guess that underwire bra wasn’t enough. During Rumors’ Totally ’90s night, Barbara Moeggenberg, Brian Lundy, Steve A, Kevin Welch, and Tyler Wright serve up drink specials, while the bar is all set up with comfy bean bag chairs, and features Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. The Pride Center held an opening reception for the Kaz Takahashi photo exhibit. Monkey Business welcomed “Girls Night Out” illusions cabaret with Dee Dee Van Carter, Shantee LaRue, Mercedes Monterro, and the Vanity Flair. Fast Eddy is back at Mona’s just in time for its 15th anniversary. PJ’s Corner Pocket’s Throwback Fridays features host Todd and hottie bartenders Ty and Marius. The turnout for poetry reading at the Stonewall Museum featured Alan Miller and John Sheets, among others. guymagyoutube

THE WEEK
The Week 4/11 to 4/17/2013
Mykki Blanco, Sexy Pajama Party and Mike Tyson
Mykki Blanco (4/14)
By Grant James
Thursday
4/11
Let’s Get Down To Business oPresented by the Broward County Chamber of Commerce, the South Florida Business Expo is a great opportunity to promote your venture, both locally and nationally. This Business-to-Business Trade Show will feature a multitude of Industries, including but not limited to; Health & Wellness, Communications, Technology, Real Estate, Home & Garden, Remodeling, Government & Education, Hospitality, Tourism and Franchise. Throw in a couple Job Fairs and Seminars, and this is your one stop shop for your future. 3 PM. War Memorial Auditorium. 800 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.
Nas Gave Him A Perm oMykki Blanco is the best thing that you most likely haven’t heard of yet. His video for “Join My Militia (Nas Gave Me A Perm)”, is the most disturbing and entertaining thing we’ve seen in a while. He’s part drag - he says that half of the time he lives as a man, but can then live as a woman for months at a time - part rapper, part nightmare and all badass. If you’re still not convinced, listen to “Haze.Boogie.Life.”. It’s dark, queer rap, and since we can’t think of any other successful attempts at this newfound genre, we’d like to think he/she is a pioneer. 10 PM. Bardot. 3456 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33127. THE WEEK continues on page 32

THE WEEK Red Hot Pool Party oIf you’re on the prowl for a ginger, you my good sir, are in luck. The Depot will be hosting a pool party, appropriately titled “Red Heat”, in honor of everyone’s favorite stepchild; the red head. Those freckled shoulders. That kinky orange hair. And of course, the carpet that matches the drapes. Steamy ginger Steven Ponce will be spinning the beats , with live entertainment provided by dancer Brian Bonds. 8 PM. The Depot. 2935 N Federal Hwy, Ft Lauderdale, 33306. Angel Rock (4/12)
Bananas In Pajamas oThe Manor’s 2nd Annual Sexy Pajama Party is here. Slip into your skivvies and show the boys what you’re werkin with. Performances from Serena (of Ru Paul’s Drag Race), TP and Estephania will augment the night’s sleepover party vibe. Unfortunately, there’s no nudity allowed, so don’t pull the, “but I sleep naked” card. 2345 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice oCome dressed as your favorite Tim Burton character and drink in the culture of all things Beetlejuice. Experience a Beetlejuice inspired modern burlesque show by The Reckless Dames, a special performance by Morgan La Rue and an always controversial act from male burlesque troupe, Hurly Burly. Enjoy Beetlejuice inspired artwork from over a dozen artists, including live art from Lauraly Atria. There’s even a promise of sandworms. If you’ve seen the film’s infamous sandworms, your interest should be peaked. 10 PM. Respectable Street. 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, 33401. Photo by Stephen Kuttner

Angel Rock Will Rock Your Socks Off oLucky for you, Jet Set Man Porn Star Angel Rock will be gracing Boardwalk with his manhood for two nights only. Who’s Yer Daddy? oBill’s monthly DILF party returns with daddies, leather and Levi’s. Leather-related attire is requested but not required, so whipping out your latex bodysuit and lubing up is an option you should strongly consider. You don’t want to look out of place in a swarm of leather vests, boots and latex, because those daddies will eat you alive. Sounds by Ramrod’s Herbie James. A $5 cover enters you in a raffle where you can win up to $500. 9 PM. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305.
Fun, Flip Flops and Foam oWaterworks 7.0 is back at Discotekka. Foam parties are notoriously...fun. Swimwear is suggested, as this is a messy good time. Some sort of sandal should complete your attire, giving you a playful yet sensible - and easily accessible - image. TBD Door Time. Discotekka Nightclub. 950 NE 2nd Ave Miami, 33132. guymagyoutube
THE WEEK ––––––––––––– Sunday 4/14 Adam Lambert: American Idol, Equal Rights Activist, Role Model oAdam lambert closes out Miami Beach Pride with enough glitz, glam and pizazz to take down a bull elephant. The singer, who could be Freddy Mercury incarnate, has been openly gay for the entirety of his career and for that, has become a staple in the gay community. He’s a fantastic role model, with talent, integrity and pride to boot. Who else could close out Miami Beach Pride but him? 8 PM. Lummus Park. Miami Beach, 33139.

oRecently named one of the “Top 30 Under 30” by Forbes (the only classical musician to make the list), Conrad Tao will be performing all five Beethoven Concertos in a two-part mini series that acts as the grand finale to the Symphony Of America’s 25th Anniversary Season. The 18-year-old Chinese pianist was playing tunes on the piano at 18 months old and gave his first recital at the age of four. Asians always do it better.. 8:15 PM. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.
Corey Feldman starring in a Horror/Thriller film. Hooked? We are. The story centers on a naive, young girl who travels to South Beach to become a model. But wait! She finds that everything is not as it seems. After models begin to disappear, she fears for her life. Not to mention the future of her career!! Rumors will be hosting a casting call for the film, and the crew will even be filming some shots of the bar’s crowd to be used in the movie. Now is your chance to become the star you’ve always wanted. 7 PM. Rumors. 2426 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Mike Tyson and His Tribal Facial Tattoo: The Undisputed Truth
Bill Burr: From Breaking Bad to Stand-Up Comedy
oMike Tyson is a rare breed. Fighter turned actor, turned sobriety figure, turned stage performer...he’s really trying to do it all. Directed by Spike Lee, the performance gets Tyson on stage for two hours of confessionals, some of which have never been heard before. It’s a bold move for the Heavyweight Champion, but we applaud him for it. 8 PM. Adrienne Arsht Center. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.
Comedian Bill Burr kicks off the 2013 South Beach Comedy Festival with a very special performance at the Fillmore. Mostly known for his role on Breaking Bad, the comedian has been on countless late night shows (Letterman, Conan, etc), and has even appeared on a few episodes of Chapelle’s Show. A wild start to a wild festival. 8 PM. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, 33139.

The 5 Hottest Viral Videos of the Week By Grant James
1 BUBBA’S HOVER Over time, golf carts and human footprints wreak havoc and damage to the terrain of a golf course, requiring almost constant replanting of new grass. Bubba Watson is trying to create the next big thing: a hovercraft-based golf cart. It crosses grass, sand, and water with ease, leaving no trace behind. We have to admit that it’s a pretty amazing invention. We just would like to see these things put to use elsewhere—just as long as we don’t have to learn to play golf.

Although Fool’s Day has passed for another year, this demonstration of Seven Diabolical Pranks shows that you can let your dark little soul run wild any time of year. Give ’em a try, and by next April 1 you’ll have fined-tuned your sense of Schadenfreude—and your arsenal.
A Russian national with tenacity and a taste for danger tries his hand at drifting. The outcome isn’t pretty, but you know what they say: In Russia, car drives you! Extra credit for using a car that was made before this writer was even born.

TRAVEL
Barcelona, Part Dos The People Make the Difference By Robert Elias Deaton

It’s admittedly frustrating to visit Barcelona. The people are unbelievably adorable—from fishmongers to hustlers, they have fast smiles, a dramatic bent, and the disarming ability to make everything more involved than it needs to be, while seeming not to care about a thing. Storeowners open and close their shops seemingly at will. People eat breakfast at noon and think nothing of including wine with their bread, cheese, and eggs. Of course, the same culinary rationale applies to lunch at 4 and dinner at 10. Forget that half of the people are speaking their native Catalan and the other half are speaking Spanish—or both, just because they can. Yes, they also speak English, with a cute accent that is deliberately enchanting, casting a spell that is impossible to escape. At all times when visiting Barcelona, keep in mind that the locals come from a long line of rebels. The Catalan Revolt of 1640 originated here, lasted for 12 years, and was the splinter in King Philip IV’s side for his whole reign. It is said that the rather inhibited Philip was observed to smile only three times in his life—once when he thought he had actually conquered the citizens of Barcelona. Foolish Philip. While you have absolutely no chance of dominating the virile men of this region, you most certainly will enjoy them, for they seem to be having fun all night long, and in any number of places. Just think LATE. Many bars don’t even open until midnight, and the discos wait until 3 a.m. to wake up the deejay. For those not staying in the gay neighborhood of L’Eixample or Gayxample as its known, take the Metro and come up for air at the Universitat station. There are at last count some three dozen bars within a ten-block radius, so flit from pub to pub in complete safety, regardless of the wee hour. Of the group, our favorites are the Butch Bear (Diputació 206), whose name says it all, as does Crazy’s (Consell de Cent 245), where the young boys get to guymag.net
tease their way into your heart on the dance floor. For some upscale fun, you cannot miss the Museum (Sepúlveda 178), with its Louis XV Rococostyle furnishings. You’ll remember that Louis XV knew how to party (his mistress, after all, was Madame de Pompadour), and the Museum carries on the tradition, particularly on weekends. The Super Lemon Sunday T-Dance is staged here from 7 p.m. to midnight. Just down the street and across the block is Metro (Sepúlveda 185), which is open until 5 a.m. and is very cruisy every day of the week. There are two dance floors at Metro, so take your pick of the floor and the boys (who are VERY friendly). It may just be the strong drinks, but we don’t think so. If go-go boys are your thing, the best in town are at Arena Madre (Balmes 32), which is open from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. This is not to be confused with the Arena Classic (Diputació 233) or the Arena Dandy (Gran Vía 593), all of which keep the same weekend hours but lack the pole dancers. The best-known bathhouse in Barcelona is called Thermas (Diputació 46) near the Rocafort Metro stop. Most of the cuties here are for rent, just in case you wonder why they’re SO interested in you. For boys that are NOT working, venture across town to Casanova (Casanova 57), which is open 24/7 and has a happening pool party every day. Swim suits not required. Olé. /theguymag

HEALTH
Additives: Helping or Harming? By Andy Kress
o
What you don’t know can hurt you Very few foods today reach the marketplace free of additives and other substances. These additives do a variety of things to our food—assisting in preventing spoilage, adding vitamins and minerals, and helping to make it more appealing to the eye, to name but a few. The end result is food that is far prettier than Mother Nature ever intended. But prettier is not necessarily better. There are 2,800 additives that American companies can use that are approved by the FDA. Although many people question the safety of these additives, there is very little evidence to suggest any major health risks for most people. But in every case, additives that are purposefully added to foods are there for one reason only—to increase sales, not to better your health. Occasionally, studies have shown that additives that were previously judged to be perfectly safe are found to be carcinogens—the ultimate bad guys. Since most additives have no taste, there is only one way to learn what’s been added to that tasty dish or foodstuff you are about to devour or purchase: Ask to see the labeling. It’s the law that restaurants and grocery stores alike must reveal food content. The real health issue arises from accidental additives. Many foods that have been sprayed with pesticides can still be contaminated even after processing. Some environmental pollutants such as PCB’s, mercury, and lead can be found in trace amounts. Unfortunately, these pollutants are never fully eliminated from the body, so, like radiation, it’s your lifetime accumulation that counts. Other additives find their way into your dairy and meat products through hormones and antibiotics given to cows, pigs, and poultry. These hormones and antibiotics are added to the animals’ food supply to speed their growth or combat disease. Once ingested by animals, it is impossible to remove these chemicals from the processed meat. The most common food additives are sugar, corn syrup, other sweeteners, and salt. These are used to enhance flavors and prevent the guymag.net
food from spoilage, but do nothing to improve your health. The few additives that do manage to bring a benefit to the table include calcium, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Using some of these additives also helps to fight against cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Additives such as benzoic acid and benzoate, found in your soft drinks, beer, margarine, and fruit products, help protect against fungi growth and bacteria. Nitrites and nitrates also help preserve food from bacteria growth and are typically found in processed meats such as sausage, bacon, ham, and lunchmeats. Sulfites help extend shelf life on dried fruits, shredded coconut, pie fillings, and relishes. None of them are healthy, so eat with caution. A few antioxidant additives are ascorbic acid (vitamin C), BHT & BHA, and tocopherols. They are found in fruit, juices, jams, and canned foods, and any fatty food that can become rancid including some cereals, baked products, potato chips, fats, and oils. Colorings added to food include beta-carotene, caramel, carrot oil, citrus red #1, dehydrated beets and FD&C colors: Blue #1, 2; Red #3, 40; Yellow #5 and 6. These additives are used to make the food more appealing to the eye and color expectations. They can be found in many processed foods, baked goods, jams, frostings, confectionary items, and meats. Emulsifiers, thickeners and stabilizers include cellulose, glycerol, guar gum, gum arabic, lecithin, and pectin. These additives are common in soups, sauces, frozen desserts, cream cheese, pudding, milkshakes, jellies, chocolate, and condiments. They improve food’s texture and consistency. Eat wisely and read labels. You’ll be healthier for it. /theguymag
