A Rock & Roll Legend Comes To Town

Presented by Broward House, the event is simple yet highly beneficial to the community. Participating restaurants will donate a percentage of their sales to HIV/AIDS healthcare – some of them have even pledged to donate 100% of the night’s sales. Some of the restaurants are local favorites – Alibi, Dapur, Rosie’s – while others are new participants entirely. For more information visit www.diningoutforlife.com/fortlauderdale.

oCanadian rock band Rush will take to the BB&T Center stage for a night of good ole’ Rock & Roll. Aside from being the third highest grossing rock band for consecutive gold or platinum studio albums (falling just behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones), they were also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994. The progressive rock group holds 24 gold and 14 platinum records, and was just inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just last week. 7:30 p.m. One Panther Parkway, Sunrise, 33323.

Richard Blanco: Setting the New Standard For America oRichard Blanco is the first openly gay person, the first immigrant, the first Latino and the youngest poet in history to read at a Presidential Inauguration. The choice to use Blanco at Barack Obama’s second inauguration was an interesting choice, which seemingly set the tone for his current term. With gay marriage pushing forward and some shred of equality on the horizon, we’d like to thank Richard Blanco for being a part of it. The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale will host a reading by Blanco, followed by a Q&A Session and book signing. 6 p.m. Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. One East Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301. The Week Pianos On the Run oFTL Play Your City is an interesting concept. A “brigade” of pianos will be on display for the public to see in Fort Lauderdale’s newest art district, Fat Village, coinciding with their monthly art walk event. After seeing the pianos in all of their glory, they will disperse throughout downtown Fort Lauderdale. The public has some participation as well, deciding on the final destination for the pianos. A map of each piano’s traveling schedule will be provided for any attendees of the event. 7 p.m. Fat Village. NW 1 Ave & NW 5 Street, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Win the Date of Your Dreams oBill’s will host it’s first annual Bachelor Auction this Saturday, so if you’ve ever fantasized about a date with a football player, now’s your chance. The winner receives a dinner date that will surely match up to your dreams. 9 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Grow Downtown oWhole Foods and Flagler Garden come together to create a community green market event to celebrate everything green. The event – called Grow Downtown – marks the first event to take place at Flagler Garden, a new garden project based in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Local green market vendors will be present to offer a variety of produce, live music will set the tone and Whole Foods will be slinging the sangria (all proceeds will be donated to Flagler Garden). 11 a.m. Flagler Garden. 441 NE 3 Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Psy - Gentleman

Unbelievable Wingsuit Cave Flight

oThe sequel to Gangnam Style is here, and it isn’t pretty. For one, the similarities between Psy and Kim Jong Un are both uncanny and hilarious. The music video shows Psy doing extremely annoying, rude, impolite things to others, complimented by an odd chorus of “I’m a motherfather-gentleman.” It’s annoying, mildly amusing and will most likely be stuck in your head for the remainder of the month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASO_ zypdnsQ

oThis video will either have you in awe, or it will have you closing your eyes. If you’re like this writer, your eyes will be sealed shut from the moment the stunt man jumps off a cliff wearing a wingsuit. With only two test runs, he preps himself for a flight through a narrow cave, with no protection besides his helmet – which most likely isn’t safe as it doubles as a camera. He obviously gets through just fine but the sheer thought of it is terrifying to say the least. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=8L8UCfxmtSw

Alison Brie Imitates Popular Internet Memes oActress Alison Brie (Scream 4, The Five-Year Engagement) sits down for an interview where she’s asked to imitate internet memes. She nails it. Cat Poses In Mirror oEither this cat is a diva, or got into its owner’s bag of magic mushrooms. The background story is irrelevant. The Over Easy Café By Richard David Chamberlain

Just the name of the dish made our mouths water: The Inside Out Bacon Cheddar Burger ($8.75) is a thick, tasty twist on a theme. Two-thirds of a pound of lean ground beef that is stuffed with bacon and cheddar cheese, grilled, and then topped with more bacon and cheese and sandwiched between a toasted Challah roll. Sailing on the Wind Star-Part Two Aboard the msy Wind Star By Robert Elias Deaton

o

The Aloft Hotel San Jose (Forum 2 Business Park, Lindora, Radial a Santa Ana) is a recent addition to the new Aloft Hotels Group, a vision of the W Hotel chain. Dramatic with its open ductwork and raw concrete walls, high ceiling lobby and chic xyz lounge, the Aloft is as trendy as it is groundbreaking. From the liquid gel floors in the elevators that change colors with each footstep, to its glass-enclosed rain shower in the high-tech equipped rooms and suites, the Aloft is where we began our Costa Rican adventure a few months ago. We had made the trip to San José aboard Spirit Airlines, flying non-stop from Fort Lauderdale International. San José is both the capital city of Costa Rica, and our rendezvous point to link up with the Source Events team. The travel organizer helmed by Craig Smith had chartered the sailing yacht msy Wind Star from Windstar Cruises, and booked the trip as an all-gay experience, which is the specialty of Source Events as it happens. The SE team and selected passengers had spent the night at the downtown Barceló San Jose Palacio Hotel (Autopista General Canas 3km, El Robledal), a convention hotel located in the residential El Robledal district of San Jose. As hotels go, the Barceló San Jose Palacio is more Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall while the Aloft is pure Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. In any case, once at the Barceló, we boarded the transfer coach to journey as a group to the msy Wind Star berthed in Puerto Caldera, located on Costa Rica’s Western coast in the province of Puntarenas. It was a somewhat tedious two-hour bus trip broken only by the compulsory stop at a large souvenir shop, where we got a close up view of our fellow passengers, as they perused the aisles of shaker toys, carved wooden statues, ceremonial headdresses and flavored Costa Rican coffee (which, we learned, contains the highest caffeine content of any coffee in the world). The embarkation process aboard the Wind Star was a painless one, with one notable exception. Windstar Cruises does not accept debit cards as a form of payment of miscellaneous on-board

guymag.net

charges, a fact that Source Events had failed to share. What could have been an embarrassing moment was fortunately sidestepped with the grace of an adagio dancer. But for future reference: sail on Windstar, bring a charge card. Not even a prepaid card will do. The unfurling of the sails is a magical moment at sea, and the Wind Star was at its most majestic as we watched the sun set into the Pacific Ocean and began the first hours of our cruise immersed in luxury. DJ Chris Racine made the most of the moment for the Sail Away dance party by the top deck pool, with cruise director Heinie Lund playing matchmaker with more enthusiasm of a latter-day Carol Channing. Captain Pedro Pinto, who calls Lisbon, Portugal home, was on the bridge, steering us safely to Quepos, our first port of call. Not that Quepos was on anyone’s mind, of course. All thoughts this second focused on food with the elegant AmphorA restaurant the setting for an exquisite five-course meal. Then, as the stars broke through the clouds and set the stage for a nearly full moon to light our route south, strangers became new friends and the mood on board was one of candlelit adventure and romance. Next week, learn about the secret beaches of Costa Rica and the real Bridge over Trouble Water.

FITNESS

America’s Obsession with a Fatty Diet By Andy Kress

o

In most developed countries in the world, fats make up a minimum of 10% of daily food allowance. However, in the United States, the numbers are far higher; roughly 30 to 40% is the average person’s fat intake. Moreover, the amount of fat--unhealthy fats at that--being consumed daily is skyrocketing. This over-indulgence of fat is beginning to cripple our country and has started an obesity epidemic. As a developed country, we need to start using our mouths to educate our adults and youth about nutrition, instead filling them with yet another greasy meal. You do the math: Consuming 30-40% of fat in your diet is equivalent to eating a fifth of a pound of pure fat a day. This is six times the amount that the body needs. The American Heart Association is trying to push America towards getting daily fat consumption down to about 20%, but the organization admits that this may be an unrealistic goal for most people. With modern conveniences and a lack of need to store fat for a harsh winter, the need to consume so much fat seems positively prehistoric. We’ve taken a step back as a nation with these outdated thoughts on nutrition, and now it’s time to move forward to set an example for the rest of the world to follow. Meanwhile, many other countries have diets that are setting the tone that America should take note of. Significantly, not only is the United States NOT leading the push toward well-balanced nutrition, we’re not even paying attention. By using their regional foods, meats and seafoods, other countries have been able to fight the flab and keep their obesity rates to a minimum. With this country’s trade agreements and power, we have the resources to easily obtain almost any food item from around the world, and yet we do not. Not only are we losing this battle, we aren’t even guymag.net

fighting to stay in the game. Not so much true with the rest of the world. For instance, in Japan, citizens consume about 30% fat -- not saturated fats that are so common in American fast foods, but rather polyunsaturated healthy fats, the type of fats found mostly in plantbased foods and oils. Japanese cuisine emphasizes fish as the protein of choice, which comes in several different forms such as sushi, sashimi and tempura. Another mainstay is rice, which can stand alone, or be added into soups and other small side dishes. The Japanese people also tend to eat 3 main meals throughout a day, consisting of a breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Mediterranean diet is also another popular and healthy way to live. Amazingly enough, the countries associated with the Mediterranean consume more fat in their diets than America, but again, these fats are of the unsaturated kind. Staple foods of the Mediterranean diet consist of rice, breads, potatoes, pastas and cereals, always accompanied by plenty of fresh local vegetables. Olive oil is used widely in Mediterranean cooking, providing more health benefits than most conventional cooking oils. Nuts, seeds, sardines and other oily fishes are also consumed as part of their healthy fats. America -- now is the time to notice what other people are doing right, and jump with both feet onto the nutrition bandwagon. Dieting is not as hard as it sounds, and the benefits can easily out-weigh the doctor’s bills. Consume wisely and take a positive step toward longevity and health. Enjoy, savor, and taste your way to a future of good health. Andy Kress is a certified fitness trainer and nutritional counselor. He can be reached at 954789-3930. theguymag

DRAG PREACHER DISALLOWS FREE SPEECH

Broadway star wanna be minister cares little about those leaving the church

M

y Fellow Members and Former Members of The Sunshine Cathedral. I love our church. So, I did some research to find out why so many long time members have left and are leaving. This is what I call positive research and the results could help make The Sunshine Cathedral a better place to worship. But, I don’t think our Preacher can accept the results. It seems every time someone questions why something is done or suggests an alternative, he has a very negative feeling toward the questioner. I believe he thinks that it is a personal attack on him. He does not seem to see that feedback can make him a better Preacher and maybe someday, a better Pastor to his flock. Why did I do research in the form of a survey? Because, the leaders of the church do not want to hear the TRUTH. In fact, it seems open and honest discussion about the many who left the church is not allowed. The last two years at each of the annual congregation meetings, I was the only member to ask questions. I asked why so many members were leaving Sunshine Cathedral? No answer from the preacher. The January 2013 meeting I said I had a list of more than 100 long-time members who left the Cathedral. I asked Durrell if he wanted a copy. He said NO! Can you believe that? As I continued to ask another question, I was told by a member behind me, to shut up and sit down. I turned around and told that member to go to hell. Then it was announced the meeting was over! No more questions, no more discussion. This experience made me feel that a survey was needed because I suspected that our preacher and staff might be covering up something. This survey tries to expose the truth! So, I did this survey at my own expense. I hope you will enjoy reading the results, which are based on 44% return of 134 questionnaires. For a copy, please email me: PASTORMUSTGO@aol.com. I tried to share the survey results with Durrell and other members of the church board. When told I couldn’t, I explained I would pass out the results to all members in the parking lot. But, Ed Johnson, a paid church staffer, said: “I WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED BY THE SHERIFF IF YOU GIVE OUT THIS SURVEY ON CAMPUS.” I’m sure you’ll agree, it was not a very Christian response on his part. What is he afraid of? But, it is all too typical of a preacher and staff member who are closed minded and attempt to bully others to keep quiet. I ask you....when many members are leaving or have left....why can’t we speak or discuss it at the church annual meetings. Why can’t we speak or discuss it at the board meeting. Why can’t we let members know why others are leaving the church? What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH? It is my church too. Why can’t we be concerned about our church members? Why can’t we talk about why more than 150 long time members have left and what can be done to try to bring them back or keep more from leaving? My survey is NOT negative as has been stated. But a very positive effort because the responses expose the truth of what is happening at the Sunshine Cathedral. I hope we all pray that Durrell Watkins can become a better preacher. With insight from the survey results, we all can hope to see a better guymag.net

Cathedral for everyone. I hope that our EX members who have left might return! But so far, the preacher still doesn’t want people to speak the truth. We are only supposed to talk about positive things as he dictates, which we all know is just his half-truth. It’s like he wants us to drink his version of kool-aid, without thought or question. He doesn’t want to hear what we have to say. In fact, his last sermon was about me and attacked my freedom of speech. He showed on the big screen in the sanctuary, a person with tape across the MOUTH. It was directed at me to keep my mouth shut. Now you see why I must turn to and publish this in the media. We must try to let people know the truth. We must let people know why many long-time Christian members feel they must leave their church. The Sunshine Cathedral is my church too. I will not leave, even though the preacher has asked me to find another church. You guessed it. I refused. I will be at the church for the long haul, to see preachers come and go. I am a Christian that believes a good shepherd will find out why any sheep leaves his fold. And then, fix the problems. Our preacher seems not to follow the teachings that OUR LORD has taught us! Why our preacher did not want to do this study is unbelievable! Why doesn’t he want long time members to stay at the church? Why he cannot practice what he preaches makes me think he has a problem! He and his staff seem to be bullying people so he can have his way, without question or discussion. He seems to hope that people who disagree will leave the church. What kind of church leader is that? Yet, he could take this study, listen to the responses and become a better minister. If the past is any indication, he will probably become bitter and accuse me of not being a positive member. We once had a Cross on our Steeple as a symbol of our Christian church. It is gone. We sing the Lord’s Prayer, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We sing hymns, but only with Durrell “approved words.’ We pray, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We used to have wonderful music, but the choir has decreased to about ten volunteers and two paid. Instead of hearing our 1/2 million dollar pipe organ, we have a poorly played guitar as our lead worship instrument. He removed the words Father, Son, Kingdom and all the other words that we are told are so offensive to women. It seems he has alternative plans and is using the church to do them to fulfill his fantasy world. He seems happier when dressed as a Drag Queen looking for an audience. And, it appears he uses the church to fulfill his childhood dreams of becoming a star, rather than being a pastor, in the true sense of the word, to ALL the flock at the Sunshine Cathedral. Let’s encourage our members to speak freely and openly. Let’s solve our problems. Let’s leave behind the dictator style of leadership and encourage all to participate. Let’s make our members happy and ask the many who have left to return to the fold. I am a very positive member of our Church, with hopes of seeing Jesus and His Christian teachings back again at THE SUNSHINE CATHEDRAL. Blessings and thanks for reading this,

Joe Mumpower
