Addicted Gets Playful INTERVIEW BY
BY DEVON MYERS
Addicted has always been a bit friskier than ES Collection, its older and more highbrow designer cousin. The brand’s meant for guys who want a little edge infused in their sports gear at more affordable prices. But this summer, Addicted is taking risqué to a whole new level with its new Playful collection. “This summer’s collection is sexier than ever,” confirms designer Ed Suner. “It’s reckless and fun.” Still, this season’s collection maintains the style and superior fit guys have come to love. And the quality of Addicted remains far superior to comparable brands. The only difference is in the fabric. Where designer brands like ES and Gucci use fine Italian fabrics, Addicted exports less expensive cotton and modal fabrics from Spain and Portugal – allowing for lower prices. Pieces in Addicted’s Playful collection range from $18.00 to $70.00, with most items less than $30. Designer Ed Suner took some time out of his schedule to talk to us a little more about the line and where the brand came from. Devon Myers: Why did you create Addicted? Ed Suner: ES is a high-end brand that uses expensive fabrics. It’s not affordable to everyone. We realized pretty quickly that the style and cuts also appealed to a demographic that were just starting out in life and didn’t have the disposable income yet to spend on briefs. We decided to create a second brand with a similar spirit and an equally strong identity that would be more affordable to young guys. DM: Why did you name the brand Addicted? ES: Because you wear them once and you are addicted. DM: Are you suggesting addictions can be good? ES: Sure, there are many good addictions. Sports, the quest for optimum health, most

love… Some addictions are great! DM: Is Addicted a sports brand like ES? ES: Not so much. It is more concept brand. DM: What kind of man wears Addicted? ES: I would like to think everyone but our main demographic tends to be young men between 18 and 30. They’re athletic guys with a playful spirit. They’re fashion conscious which is something that kind of took us by surprise. It’s amazing how fashion conscious young guys are today! DM: Do you expect the Addicted wearer will one day grow into ES? ES: That’s our plan. DM: Is that why Addicted seems to be on more store shelves than ES? ES: Addicted is a consumer brand and so is in more places. The ES collection has a restrictive policy regarding distribution and wholesale. We don’t sell to just any stores. Retailers need to meet a pretty high standard to carry the line. DM: What are some styles that you might do for Addicted that you would not do for ES? ES: We wouldn’t do mesh for ES. It’s too young for the sophisticated ES Collection wearer. Also some of the long boxers that I designed for Addicted wouldn’t translate for ES. The ES wearer isn’t interested in the cut and also because of the high-end fabric in ES, the briefs would be extremely expensive to make. DM: Sex sells underwear… does underwear buy sex? ES: I never really thought of it that way but you know what? Maybe it does. There’s a reason all the best toys are sold in colorful boxes. It’s all about the pretty packaging, isn’t it? Addicted is available at ESCollectionUSA. com.

HOT LIST
The Ultimate Mother’s Day Shopping Guide BY GRANT JAMES Your mother really is your best friend. She carried you around inside of her for nine months and gave up things like sushi, certain cheeses, cigarettes and most importantly, alcohol. Then she spent the next couple of decades raising you. She’s the most important woman in your life and one day a year, you get the opportunity to reciprocate some of that love. Coming up with the right gift is never easy, especially for family. How many unused gifts have you given in your lifetime? To be honest, probably a lot. Sometimes the best gifts are one of two things: classic/timeless or out of the ordinary. To ensure you’re giving mommy dearest all that she deserves, we’ve scouted out a slew of fun and thoughtful Mother’s Day hot spots. You’ll awe her and make her proud – without breaking the bank.
Anthropologie
Contrary to what you might hear about Anthropologie, it’s not all expensive merchandise in there. They have sales and gift ideas for under $100 just like any other store. Their kitchenware is adorable – measuring cups shaped like hedgehogs and whales, hand painted measuring spoons, animal shaped cookie jars, funky salt & pepper shakers, and a whole plethora of quirky utensils. Their elegant floral robes are appropriate for any age and their jewelry is classic and sophisticated – with a modern twist.
Macy’s
Macy’s is the perfect department store to find nearly anything you want for your special lady. There’s a huge amount of items marked down for the holiday that are surprisingly still on trend.

From robes to designer watches, you can pamper her with designer brands for a substantially lower price. If you’re stuck on what to get, you can’t go wrong with a perfume gift set. Most are marked down as well: the Gucci Guilty gift set is now going for $78 (originally $113). It’s your one stop shop for practically any Mother’s Day gift.
Lush
If your mom loves fancy toiletries, you need to visit Lush. All of their products are handmade with fresh, natural ingredients, many of them vegan based. They even fight animal testing on the side. They carry bath bombs, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, facial scrubs and even lotions/ butters. They have gift sets provided – all boxed up, wrapped and ready to go – or you can opt to create your own. The bath bombs in particular are phenomenal and for under $7 each, they make a wonderful addition to any of her other gifts.
Amazon
If you get anxiety whenever you set foot in a mall, remember: there’s always online shopping. Fortunately, Amazon knows what’s up. Their site is littered with Mother’s Day specials, grouped into different mom personas: Luxe Mom, Household CEO, Escape Artist, Professional Mom, Fit Mom and Crafty Mom. Figure out which one of those categories your mother falls under and get clicking. Maybe she’d enjoy a Kindle Fire for just $159. A crafty lady might like a new sewing machine or maybe a quirky cookbook. Whichever her type may be, you’ll be able to find something on Amazon – without a doubt.

Koko Secret Lunchtime Discovery BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
o
There’s a hidden lunch spot next to the Galleria Mall called Koko, which on first inspection would seem like an office complex’s version of a food truck. Don’t you believe it. As designed and managed by Johnson & Wale’s graduate John “Koko” Gilley, the menu here has taken basic contents and wrapped it in a complex of flavors. The selection of bistro sandwiches available “Koko-style” include the Tuscan Turkey on a lovely, thick, crusted Ciabatta bread ($7.00). The oven roasted turkey breast is complimented with provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, and sun-dried tomato mayonnaise. It’s served with an enormous side of Seasoned Fries that are another secret find here and included with each order. TRAVEL
Through The Panama Canal Source Events Sails Two Oceans—Part 4 BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
o
Transiting the Panama Canal sounds like one of those romantic events, akin to sailing the Nile or riding an elephant through Thailand’s Khao Sok rainforest. Adventure, thrill and photo op—all wrapped into an eighthour journey—as you marvel at this rustically antiquated means of dropping between the higher Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea with its lower tides outside of the open Atlantic. To gain entry to the Panama Canal on the south side, one needs to go under the Bridge of the Americas, built in 1962. Aboard the Source Events’ chartered Wind Star sailing yacht, we approached the bridge at night, under a full-moon sky that was Hollywood-soundstage perfect. This, as it turned out, was both the good news and the bad news. The Bridge of the Americas has a clearance at high tide of only 201 feet. At last measure, the Wind Star’s four masts rise 204 feet in the air. We’re not sure what the nautical term for this is, but in layman’s terms, it looked like a collision waiting to happen. The full moon didn’t help the situation, of course, keeping the tides from lowering as much as they might at our projected 11 p.m. graceful sail under the span. The fact that we made our approach and then stopped—as in completely stopped—in front of the bridge, only increased our sense of anticipation. For over an hour we hovered as a crowed of hundreds were attracted onto the span itself, looking down at us as we look up. A tug boat and a police boat with a giant spotlight only served to heighten the suspense. Our onboard DJ threw his own joke into the moment by playing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for a boatload full of happy gay campers who thought the entire event was guymag.net
little more than a photo op staged by the clever Source Events team. Finally, at just after 11:15 p.m., the Wind Star began to inch its way under the span which from the deck looked definitely too low. Long story short, we did eventually clear the bridge with eight inches to spare. Only later did we learn that the police vessels were there to prevent any other ships in the area from creating a wake. The following morning, the entire yacht was up and alert as we spent the day passing through the lochs that comprise the canal. “We were sailing through history, from ocean to ocean, as we passed the construction site of the new addition to the Panama Canal anticipated to open in 2015,” said Source Events’ president Craig Smith. On our last evening on the elegant yacht, the entire Source Events’ team, helmed by Cruise Director Heinie Lund, hosted a talent show to make “The Love Boat”’s Julie McCoy proud. Featuring both crew and passengers, this shipboard extravaganza evidenced just how many unsung stars were included among our midst. Pianist Jimmy Vukovich keep the music flying by right along with his keyboard, while hosts Danny Valdez, John Cornelius, and Todd Dunlap, joined DJs Chris Racine, Frances Preve, and director of operations Rafael Rodriguez to root from the sidelines in the over-packed Source Lounge. Say what you will, but 140 gay men (with two straight couples) know how to throw quite the party. One of the straight husbands aboard set the tone of the entire cruise by saying as a farewell toast that he and his wife “had never had more fun.” From the sound of the cheers that drifted off into the Panamanian night, he and his wife were not alone. theguymag

Got Acne? BY ANDY KRESS
o
Acne is a problem that affects most Americans at one point in their lives. For most, it comes during adolescence, but for some it is a continued problem into adulthood. Not only is this health condition unsightly, but it can also be very painful at times. These blemishes can have a major impact on the condition of the skin, leaving behind deep scars and cysts where the skin infection once grew. There are ways of fighting off this embarrassingly harsh skin disease through a healthy diet and lifestyle. Many dermatologists will tell you that hormones are responsible for most of the cases of acne. This is true, but the foods you eat have a major impact on your overall health and the way the brain functions to send these hormones through the body. The hormones involved are called androgens or male sex hormones. These hormones prompt the skins oil glands to enlarge and produce excess sebum (the oily substance that lubricates the skin). With this surge of androgens the body also stimulates hair growth, which in turn increases the shedding of keratin (a protein in hair), resulting in a clogged pore. This clogged pore then forms a whitehead or closed comedo. Sometimes the pores and glands become infected with bacteria that usually inhibits the skin, thus causing the most severe case of acne--cystic acne. Cystic acne can be hereditary and past down from generation to generation. There are certain foods and lifestyle choices that can cause this skin disease. Salt is a major contributor to acne and should be avoided in large doses. These large doses can cause a flare up and provoke a more deleterious case of acne. Heavily cured meats should be avoided during bouts of breakouts. Another food that should be used in moderation is kelp supplements. Kelp is mainly used as a salt substitute and can cause severe cystic acne. High doses of B vitamins are also linked to acne. Red meats have lots of vitamin B6 and B12, portions should be cut back or used in moderation to the standards of the food pyramid plate. High doses of vitamin A can cause dry and flaking skin that can bring acne to the surface. Selftreating acne with supplementation can have a very adverse effect. Constant over-exposure to the sunlight can exacerbate conditions of acne as well. Sunbathing and the heavy use of tanning beds while covered in tanning oils can cause breakouts to occur. Steroid use is a lifestyle choice

that features acne as a side effect. Using steroids of any kind for whatever reason without a doctors prescription is a bad choice all the way around, especially for your overall health. There are also many ways to prevent and combat acne’s evil grip on your skin. One is having a diet consisting up to 50% fruits and vegetables. Eating fresh fruits and vegetable that have higher concentrations vitamins A and C tremendously improve skin health. Whole grains and cereals with B vitamins and zinc helps lower acne incidences. Lean cuts of meats like chicken, fish, pork is recommended in the fight against this skin disease. Portions of these lean cuts of meat should be 4oz or less if eating only three meals per day. When treating or preventing acne, try not to scrub abrasively or use harsh chemicals that dry out the skin. Choosing to have a proper diet, regularly exercising, keeping stress low and getting an adequate amount of sleep will be your best defense against this troublesome skin problem. Good nutrition; clean skin.
