Timoteo Pops Out Bright Neon Celebration of Pride BY MARK DAWSON

Before launching his own sportswear label, Timoteo Ocampo worked as a designer for Baby Phat, where he helped launch the brand with Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee. When he decided to venture out on his own, he began small, manufacturing select fashion pieces for men in Los Angeles. That was over ten years ago. Since then, the Timoteo brand has evolved into a fun and hip athletic brand that produces full lines of underwear, swimwear, denim and sportswear. This summer, they’re unveiling their boldest line yet, the Pop OUT collection, for guys who like to wear color with pride. Timoteo Ocampo chats with us a bit about his colorful designs, where he drew inspiration from and what the future holds for the collection.

I’d say 80’s neon colors are back this summer and why not? They’re excitingly rich. I think as the economy turns around, people are embracing bright colors to feel better about them selves. What will Timoteo be poppin’ OUT next? For summer, we’re unveiling new swimwear, tank tops, shorts denim shorts and twill shorts – all in fun colors. This summer is a celebration of color! For more information, visit Timoteo.net

What was the inspiration for the POP OUT Classic Collection? Timoteo Ocampo: Guys aren’t afraid to wear color anymore. They want more than the basic black or white underwear. I wanted to give them striking colors to choose from. I also loved the juxtaposition of our old English logo waistband against the popping colors. Is there a modern art influence? I’m a huge fan of modern art and spend a lot of time in Los Angeles at the Broad Contemporary Art Museum where they display a lot of Roy Lichtenstein’s work. Lichtenstein was one of the greatest modern art artists of the last century. I love what he was able to do with primary colors. I also love the influence his work has made with contemporary graffiti artists like Mr. Brainwash. They’re very Miami chic! The pink and jade briefs are very reminiscent of South Beach, Miami. I’ve also seen the colors on beaches in Mexico and South America. Have other designers begun incorporating neon colors in their collections? Yellow and bright green are prominent in the Louis Vuitton collection by Marc Jacobs. Also, Cole Haan shoe collections are using a variety of energetic colors. Can we announce that 80’s neon colors are back this summer?

Rockshow with Exclusive Paul McCartney Content o“Rockshow” is a 1980 concert film by Paul McCartney and Wings, filmed while on their 1976 North American tour. It features 30 songs from four concerts of the tour, and was part of the “Wings Over the World Tour” that also lead to the live album Wings Over America. Until now, McCartney was reluctant to make the film available to the public in its entirety. You Are Beautiful oIn “The Beauty in Everything,” a choir will paint a picture of texts that get the world to see the beauty in everything. The Girl Choir of South Florida’s singers will be performing pieces that touch on the thoughts of poets, philosophers, and composers from the fourteenth century to today. The performance demonstrates that everyone has their own personal take on beauty, dating back to the earliest pieces of literature. Trends change over time but true inner beauty is eternal. 8 p.m. Broward Center For The Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Spanish Singer Raphael Heads to the Beach oSinger Raphael has been active for over five decades, paving the way for modern Spanish singers. After appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1970, he gained public notoriety. Following his appearance, he got his own television show in 1975, titled “El Mundo de Raphael.” The Spanish singer has often been cited as a great influence on modern Latin American artists. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

One Magical Weekend Pre-Party oBill’s will be hosting their fifth annual One Magical Weekend Pre-Party on Saturday night. Hosted by Nikki Adams and Nicole Halliwell with special guest star Adam Barta, the party will be getting everyone fired up for One Magical Weekend in Orlando May 31 to June 2. Bill’s own DJ Andy Ajar will even be spinning tunes at the Riptide party at Typhoon Lagoon on May 31. 9 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Do The Harlem Shake oBaauer may look like a very foreign name, but it’s actually someone you know all too well. After all, hundreds of YouTube videos sampled his breakthrough song just a few months ago. The 30 second long viral trend known as “The Harlem Shake” may have nothing to do with the actual dance move it was named after, but it still gained a huge following quicker than grumpy cat could say “no.” Internet trends aside, Bauuer is actually pretty talented. He’s one of the people that made electro-trap music a “thing,” akin to the likes of Skrillex and dubstep or Calvin Harris and the new direction of house music. We’re just wondering what kind of shenanigans will go down when he plays “Harlem Shake.” 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

GUYTUNES

Five Albums For Your Summer Playlist BY GRANT JAMES The Florida heatwave known as “summer” is here, and with that, comes the need for a summertime soundtrack. Hitting up the beach, pool and of course, the clubs, all require a fresh new set of summery songs. The heat is here to stay (for at least another 6 months), so here are five new album releases to keep you cool.

Charli XCX - True Romance

When to listen: When you’re headed to the beach with a car full of friends – windows down, volume up. Charli XCX is essentially Goth Spice -- she actually looks like a white version of Scary Spice. Her music is tinged with an unbridled joy, pop culture references and a strong 90’s influence. Her low-key single, “What I Like,” is perhaps her most accessible song, while the ambitious “You (Ha Ha Ha),” is a bit more of a niche track. The album will stand out for anyone with a love for pop, electronic and 90’s R&B. If you want an album that has a fresh take on a nostalgic sound, this is your summer album.

Various Artists - The Great Gatsby Soundtrack

When to listen: When you’re relaxing by the pool. Remember when artists would create a brand new track specifically for a soundtrack? Sure, we’ve gotten some exclusive, decent tracks from the Twilight soundtracks, but we need more. Fortunately, Baz Luhrmann’s newest flick, “The Great Gatsby,” follows through. Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” is a fantastic ballad for the summer blockbuster and Beyonce & Andre 3000’s dark, sexy cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” successfully holds a candle to the original. When to listen: When you’re at the beach. She & Him are the definition of “summer.” Actresss Zoey Deschanel lends her vocals to the sounds of vintage bubblegum pop, and strangely enough, it manages to be cute without feeling forced. It sounds like it’s right out of the 60’s or 70’s, with a strong Beach Boys feel (except with Deschanel’s vocals). Opening track “I’ve Got Your Number Son” is the perfect upbeat track to get your summer days started, but as the album does have a strong Beach Boys feel, it really screams “beach party,” and that’s fine by us. guymag.net

When to listen: When you throw that awesome house party. Florida native Diplo created a little project back in 2008 called Major Lazer. It was wild music that you wanted to dance your ass off to, most notably to the 2009 track “Pon De Floor,” which would go on to serve as the music for Beyonce’s 2011 smash single “Run The World (Girls).” But on their new album, the dance beats are dialed back (except for a few tracks that jump out at you), this time focusing on a more reggae/dub sound. The album works for both intimate gatherings and party settings. Just in time for those summertime parties you’ve been wanting to throw.

James Blake - Overgrown

She & Him - Vol. 3

When to listen: When you’re making love/having sex. British singer James Blake is one of this generation’s greatest male soul singers. He’s experimental, sensual, unique and above all – talented. His soulful voice sets the tone for any bedroom scenario, literally from mild to wild. The songs go from sweet to dark in the blink of an eye, effortlessly mixing soul with electronic music. His single,“Retrograde,” is already a highlight of 2013 for a lot of music critics. The dynamic album is the perfect summertime romance album. guymagtube

TRAVEL

Providence, Rhode Island The New Place to Honeymoon BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

When Rhode Island became the 10th state to legalized same-sex marriage, they put the capital city of Providence squarely on the honeymoon map for the LGBT community, violets and all. RI is a small state: population just over a million and a half people, with some 178,000 in the capital. Once the headquarter of Mafia gangster, Rhode Island lost that distinction when the syndicate headed to the warmth of Florida and left the clear skies in Providence to be transformed into a tourist destination. Gay artists had previously set the tone of the incredibly progressive Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art (224 Benefit St, 401-4546500). Last yeast, U.S. News and World Report ranked the school first among Fine Arts schools, outpacing Yale University for the honor. In addition to throwing open the doors for free on each third Thursday during July and August, the RISD , the addition of 6,000 square feet of special exhibit space helped bolster the museums worldwide reputation. Housing over 84,000 pieces of art, including some by RISD students/grads, you’ll find it hard to pry yourself from this institution. New this summer is a cultural program called Design the Night, a free event series offered each third Thursday in July and August. The action spills out onto the street as throngs head downtown to Mix, match, and custom-tailor your Museum experience. Dynamic evenings offer ways to connect with art and one another. Lively discussions with artists and designers, hands-on art-making, a guymag.net

Magic Lantern show, live music and food—lots of food, serviced from mobile trucksl Chace Center Plaza is the place to celebrate and educate. For those with less refined tastes, head on over to Providence Eagle (124 Snow Street) where every night’s a party where the fun never ends, particularly for those in levi/leather. Check out Promiscuous Mondays, Classic Rock Tuesdays, Bar Golf Wednesdays, Top Hits Thursdays, Cruise & Jockstrap Fridays, Dark Night Saturdays, and Tea Dance Sundays. The Eagle is just coming down from last weekend’s high of Bear Bricade Weekend, so forgive the bartenders if they need an occasional siesta. There is nothing quite like cruising the lobby of the Renaissance Providence Downtown (5 Avenue of the Arts, 401-919-5000), fully decked out in gear, while waiting for your cab. This being New England, of course it’s elegant. That much is obvious. What isn’t so clear is that the Renaissance began life as a Masonic Temple in 1926. The final restoration was only recently opened after having been kept under wraps and scaffolding for years. The basement she-she restaurant is call The R (401-919-5050), and serves a luxe Mediterrean Dancing takes place on the floor of the MiraBar (15 Elbow St.), which the three floor hike to the top is well worth the expended energy. FITNESS

Rise and Shine The Benefits of Morning Workouts BY TOM BONANTI

o

Do you have difficulty fitting even the most basic workout into your already over-booked schedule? Is your weight loss program stalled due to those pesky cravings for sugar and carbs? Maybe you wake up in the morning anxious, cranky and lethargic? These are all real problems faced by people everyday. Sad to say, there are no easy solutions and no magic supplements. Yet many have found that an early morning exercise regime has its advantages as far as increasing energy, speeding up weight loss and even elevating moods. So, rise and shine and let’s make a case for working out in the AM. First, exercising in the morning frees up your day. This may seem obvious, but getting your workout in before work means that you’ll be up for impromptu dinner plans, a hot date, or a movie with friends. Plus, your time in the gym is time just for you, before you give it all away to your job, coworkers, or friends. Working out is an investment in your health and well being and as such it needs to be one of the top priorities of your day. Secondly, when you exercise, the effort helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles, organs and other tissues. And that means your whole cardiovascular system and all of your muscles will work more efficiently. You’ll experience more energy and a spike in your metabolism that will help you burn more fat and calories all day long. And third, early morning exercise jump starts your brain better than the strongest caffeine fix. guymag.net

Exercise has both short-term and long-term brain benefits. Studies show that the short-term benefits include better executive function and memory recall. In addition to better work performance, exercise can alleviate morning anxiety and depression by increasing the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killing and “feel good” hormones. Finally, research shows that working out in the morning coupled with a healthy breakfast is the only way to start the day. Exercise helps to rev up your metabolism so that you’ll have better endurance as you face challenges and stress. A substantial breakfast comprised of a 3-2-1 ratio of low glycemic index carbs, proteins and healthy fats helps you to have a steady supply of energy throughout the day. You’ll also store less fat and be less likely to give into those pesky cravings for sugary treats and quick-fix fast foods. While there are many clear advantages to working out in the AM, for many people this is just not an option. If this is true for you, take heart; you can train your body to reach its personal best simply by sticking to a steady and consistent exercise program which includes cardio, weights, and sound nutritional principles. This summer take the time to try new routines. Enjoy warm weather activities like biking, swimming, and running.
