Charli XCX:

The Long-Lost Spice Girl BY GRANT JAMES Charli XCX has been having one hell of a year. Following up on some heavy buzz from a number of music blogs, Charli (real name Charlotte Aitchison) released her debut album, “True Romance” (through Atlantic Records), toured with Marina and the Diamonds, penned a song for Icona Pop (“I Love It,” the Swedish duo’s biggest single to date), and is now headlining a North American tour. She’s opened for the likes of Coldplay, Santigold and Sleigh Bells, where she formed a distinct sound and image, while simultaneously building a fanbase that’s equally hard to categorize. We had the chance to sit down and talk to Aitchison about her love for the Spice Girls, The Craft and of course, Amanda Bynes. I think of you as a modern Spice Girl. Maybe “Goth Spice?” Do you draw inspiration from them? Yeah. When I was younger they were my heroes. I used to love the Spice Girls so much. They were the first concert I went to see. But I feel like now, asthetically I’m inspired by them. The video for “Say You’ll Be There” is like one of my favorite videos of all time. Baby Spice is the best, defintiely. I would think they would appreciate your work. Have any of them approached you? I did get approached by Mel B, but I think that kind of went away. I also went to Geri’s house. She interviewed me for V Magazine which was really cool. I saw that the Backstreet Boys tweeted a link for your live cover of “I Want It That Way.” Career highlight for sure, right? Yeah, I mean it’s pretty cool. They tweeted me twice actually. It’s up there in my top moments.” You recently released your music video for “Take My Hand,” which was a collaboration with Urban Outfitters. What was the shoot like? It was pretty cool. We went to this club in London called Corsica Studios. We just went there with a lot of friends and shot the video. We wanted it to be like a scene from “Kids.” We wanted it to be real and raw, so we just got everyone to wander around the club and do their own thing. It was kind of inspired by where I came from and where my music comes from, which is the rave scene in London. It was kind of inspired by “Party Monster” and “Kids,” and movies like that. I know you’re a big fan of “The Craft.” Did you see that they’re turning it into a musical? There’s even a drag version in the works that stars Ru Paul Drag Race winner Sharon Needles.

18

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

There’s a drag version of “The Craft?” Oh my god...that’s insane! I did see that [they were making it into a musical], someone tweeted me that. My thing is, I love “The Craft” so much, but I absolutely HATE musicals with a passion. I’m kind of in a dilemma because I don’t know if because my love of “The Craft” is so big that it will override my hate for musicals, or whether I’ll just hate it because I fucking hate musicals anyway. I’m not really sure, I’ll have to think about it. Which witch was your favorite? Definitely Nancy Downs, the evil witch played by Fairuza Bulk. When she does that crazy scene where she’s dragging her feet across the floor.... “True Romance” is just a fantastic album. It’s cohesive, fun and wildly addicting. What was the concept for the album? There was no concept! I was just writing the record and I guess it kind of just happened that all of the songs ended up being about love. I suppose it’s because that’s what I know... that’s what I’ve experienced and that’s it. The record is my experience of romance and love and I feel like you can’t have “true romance” without having the darker side of romance as well as the lighter side, and that’s kind of what the record is about. After the success of “I Love It,” you and Icona Pop both gained a pretty solid LGBT fanbase. Does it surprise you? Or has your audience always been so diverse? I feel like I’ve always had quite a big gay fanbase. That’s the best fanbase to have because I feel like they’re always so wild at gigs. They’re so much fun. I’m really glad that they’re enjoying my music. How has it been touring with Marina and The Diamonds? Really good. I feel like we share a lot of the same fanbase so the shows are really wild. It’s really cool. It’s like being on tour with your sister. guymagtube

Nelson O:

International Fusion Never Sounded So Good

BY GRANT JAMES

Nelson O is one of South Florida’s brightest up and coming singers. He fuses together music from all over the world, creating an international fusion that’s fun, upbeat and offers a little something for everyone. It started with accapella bachata songs on a stage in his small town in the Dominican Republic and has now evolved into something much bigger. His new album, “Bacharengue,” was just released May 17. We got the opportunity to speak with Nelson about his new album, the gay community and the cultural melting pot known as South Florida. How has the gay community helped you as an artist? Some of my first live performances were at gay pride festivals such as Stonewall Festival and Pridefest, and I’ve done benefits for Broward House and National AIDS Conference. My gay friends have always been incredibly supportive coming out to the mainstream gigs and shows I’ve done. I know you’re from a small town in the Dominican Republic. What was it like coming from a small town to south Florida? How long have you been living in South Florida? I’ve lived here for nearly 20 years. The big difference is that there is such a diversity of cultures and people here. It’s truly so international and exciting here. I still go back home every year and renew the Dominican soul, energy and joy of living that feeds my music. What’s your favorite thing about South Florida? The people! Every time I perform I seem to meet some fascinating new character. There’s always something unpredictable and lively going on here. You can say that again. Favorite local spot to spend time at? The underwear section at H&M. I collect underwear like Imelda Marcos collected shoes and H&M always has the CRAZIEST underwear! What was the inspiration for your new album, “Bacharengue?” It’s always been a dream of mine to put out a collection of my own original music. I’ve recorded this album over 4 years of fusion experimentation. “Bacharengue” represents the best of that work, all songs that reflect my feelings about life’s processes of growth and affirmation. I read that you like to add pop elements to your work. What new and upcoming pop artists are you guymag.net

listening to at the moment? Olly Murs is amazing!!! If you had to pick only one album to listen to for the remainder of your life, what would it be? Cuculand by Cucu Diamantes. Recently I met Cucu when she was here for Miami International Film Festival. I was so inspired by her. She’s incredible. Are you going to tour in support of the new album? My kick-off show for the album is next Thursday, May 23 at 9pm at the Moca Cafe and Lounge in North Miami. I’ll be performing some songs from the album. After that I have more dates planned, fans can stay in touch through my website, nelsono. net Any new music videos in the works? The videos for my first two advance lead singles, “Say Yes To La Vida” and “Caña Dulce,” are already out. The album’s third single, the title track “Bacharengue”, will debut with a new music video soon after the album’s official release. What do you hope people take away from this album? Do you have any advice for young or new artists out there? If people tune in to the lyrics and the messages of the songs, there is a lot of longing and soul in the work, and I hope I can pass on some of the spirit of the people who inspired me in the creation of it. For young artists – sing every day, anywhere, anytime. The “business” part of the music business can be overwhelming, and singing everyday keeps you grounded and connected. theguymag

THE WEEK

Fleetwood Mac, Pam Ann and Rent ____________________ Thursday

6/6

“Cockpit” Is Dirtier Than It Sounds oPam Ann’s “Cockpit” tour is just as dirty as it sounds. When speaking to us about the evolution of her character over the years, Pam says, “She never used to swear or be filthy. I know, that’s hard to believe. My language has gotten more aggressive and dirty over the years. It’s from working in gay clubs all over London. I’ve developed a lot of bad habits.” The air hostess with the mostest will be heading to Miami with hilariously raunchy material in hand, so don’t leave home without your sense of humor. After all, Pam has high hopes for her American audience: “They are my favorite in the entire world. They come with massive smiles and are ready to have a good time.” 8 p.m. Colony Theatre. 1040 Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach, 33139.

A GALA Old Time oPresented by the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, “A GALA Old Time” acts as the closing finale for their 27th season finale. “A GALA Old Time” celebrates the 30th Anniversary of GALA Choruses (The Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) with some of the most popular numbers sung by America’s GALA choruses from the time of inception, all the way up until now. Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus describes the music as “[standing] the test of time!” Selections include “Marry Us” from The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, “Diversity” from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, “In My Mother’s Eyes” from Turtle Creek Chorale, “Love Don’t Need A Reason” from The NYC Gay Men’s Chorus, “The Testament of Freedom” (a 1943 composition by Randall Thompson) sung by several GALA choruses over the years and “All Rights Reserved” from the Fort Collins Rainbow Chorus, and much more. 8 p.m. Museum of Art. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

closed down, ideas for Trixie II began to form, and now, two and a half years later, that afterthought has become a reality. The original club was one of south Florida’s biggest transgender clubs, not to mention it was the only one in Hollywood. Trixie’s II hopes to revive the heart and soul that made its predecessor so popular among the LGBT community. 7 p.m. Trixie II 1322 N Dixie Hwy, Hollywood, 33020.

It’s Wayne Brady’s Line Anyway o If you don’t watch the newly rebooted version of “Let’s Make A Deal” on CBS, you might remember Wayne Brady from the famed, “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” where he was a regular guest who participated in various improvisational excursions. Brady grew a strong fan base on the show, proving that behind those dashing good looks lurked a quick wit and a sharp tongue. He will be making a stop in south Florida for a night of stand-up, and judging by his track record, we’re pretty sure you won’t want to miss it. 9 p.m. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. 5550 NW 40th St, Coconut Creek, 33073.

Fleetwood Mac oFleetwood Mac just won’t quit. They’ve just released their first new material in 10 years and are now touring in support of the EP – ironically titled “Extended Play”. Various members (the lineup has changed drastically over the years) have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the band has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, with 48.5 million units selling in the U.S. The tour sees the return of Stevie Nicks, and is the first tour since the deaths of members Bob Brunning, Bob Weston and Bob Welch. See the band perform “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” and all of their other hits in a once in this rare opportunity. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave, Sunrise, 33323.

Coliseum Reunites oIf you were lucky enough to go to Coliseum in Fort Lauderdale before it’s unfortunate closure, more than likely, you had a blast. During its reign, guymagtube

THE WEEK Coliseum was the mecca of gay clubs. The Manor will be recreating that experience in an effort to fill the void that was left in your heart with a “Coliseum Reunion Party.” DJ Monty Q will be spinning dance-worthy tracks, and recording artist Adela will provide a special performance on the main stage, with additional shows by Erika Norell and TP Lords. “Muscle God dancers, flaggers and much more” are being promised by the venue, so bring your A-game and your dancing shoes. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.and all of their other hits in a once in this rare opportunity. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave, Sunrise, 33323.

Charli XCX: The Long-Lost Spice Girl oPop singer Charli XCX has described her personal style as “Wednesday Addams meets Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice meets Baby Spice.” Interestingly enough, she hit the nail on the head with the description. Her sound is a blend of synths, addictive pop choruses with a hint of R&B slow jams for good measure, without ever feeling dated or cliched. Charli notes, “pop’s being taken seriously again now, which is eactly what it deserves.” You might also recognize the British singer’s name from the Icona Pop single, “I Love It,” which she wrote and was featured on. The single has catapulted Charli into a more mainstream success, but she’s still just a kid at heart: “Some of my music is still very teen oriented – I’m still pretty much a teenager – but there’s love in there.” 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

Rent oAndrews Living Arts Studios has been surprising locals recently with their showcases and full-length performances alike. In their newest production, the studio tackles one of the most favored musicals in the LGBT community: “Rent.” The musical has been a beloved member of queer culture since its premiere on Broadway in 1996, and again with a major motion picture adaptation in 2005, which features many of the original cast members. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the rock musical tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians who are all fighting to survive the brutality of the entertainment industry, New York and life itself. It takes place in New York’s Lower East Side and takes issues like HIV/AIDS, suicide, drug addiction and discrimination. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studios. 23 NW 5th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301. guymag.net

Songwriter’s Showcase o Every second Monday of the month, Broward Center for the Performing Arts hosts “Songwriter’s Showcase,” an event dedicated to bringing together local, national and international singer/songwriters in south Florida. Found Chrystal Hartigan asks participants to “Harken back to the days of 1960’s Greenwich Village coffeehouses,” when creativity and free-thinking was exploding all over the city. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

TRAVEL

Key West’s Island House Resort—Part II A World of Its Own in a Place Time Forgot BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

While there are many fine gay guesthouses in Key West, there is only one all-male, clothing optional resort. The Island House hits the mark by somehow being classy yet sleazy, chic plus sexy, inviting yet exclusive, and an allaround great time. And it is that blend of refinement and bathhouse that sets the Island House Resort apart from any other place of its kind on earth. This multi-level compound of guest rooms, apartments, and suites was originally opened in 1976 as a 19-room all-male guesthouse, with rooms at the time costing $13 a night. The oldest part of the complex dates back to 1895, when it started life as a captain’s house--a far cry from the lavish oasis the Island House was to become. That transformation began in 1999, when local couple Jon Allen and Martin Kay bought the then dilapidated property just off the corner of Fleming and White Streets. Martin, with his degree in landscape architecture from the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew in southwest London, at one time had a thriving chain of floral shops in England. Jon, with his degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was an international businessman whose last straight gig was as a product director for Payless Shoes. Together, the pair sold their assets and moved to Key West where they purchased the shell of the current Island House, and went to work performing miracles. All it took was a herculean effort, a lot of blind faith, and $2.5 million dollars in spare cash to shutter and paint, redesign and transform. Tiles floors, new plumbing, expansion of buildings, a new pool and its accompanying bar and café, a rooftop sundeck with misting system, plus mesh loungechairs that mold to your body atop freshly fluffed towels that never seem to be in short supply. They added a fitness center (the only place that total nudity isn’t allowed), two Jacuzzi’s—one inside, one out; a sauna, a steam room, plus a video lust lounge hidden from view up a set of stairs and down a red hallway. Then they added the pillowtop mattresses, the flat screen TVS, the leather seating areas, the completely wireless all-access free Internet, a free business center with computer printer, round-the-world newspapers, and original

male nude art from the owners’ private collection spotted through the complex and inside individual rooms and suites. To hear them tell it, it’s all in a day’s work. element to Jon (with a special nod to Gordon at the front desk). The creative elements are all Martin, who lavished the place with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tropical plants and flowers placed just so. (Well, he is a landscape architect, after all, and what’s good enough for Kew Gardens works just fine, thank you, in Key West.) You’ll find the little slice of heaven known as guymag.net

the Island House Resort at 1129 Fleming Street, at the very tip of the Keys, but within easy walking distance of all that’s quaint and important. Their toll free number is 800-890-6284, and yes, your cell phones work just fine there, even at the end of the earth. The best place to be.

Running short of breath? Catch it at the dinner table. BY ANDY

KRESS

o

Asthma is one of the most common forms of lung disease in the world today. It is also the leading cause of childhood deaths and should not be taken lightly. When an asthma attack strikes its victim, he or she experiences labored breath, wheezing, chest tightness and constriction of the lungs causing a bronchospasm. These attacks can come out of nowhere and can be quite severe. Harmless everyday substances and activities can trigger an attack. Most asthmatics have the benefit to often pinpoint the source of their attacks. For the lucky ones, it’s as obvious as airborne toxins, environmental pollutants, dander, or pollen that can easily be avoided with a little vigilance. An inhaler is one of the ways to fight an attack, for the short term. However there is a longterm way to keep your frequency of attacks down and it can start at mealtime. Few asthmatic relate their attacks to meals, assuming because it is a lung-related disease, it must be caused by an airborne issue. Yet an asthma attack can be precipitated by as simple an act as ingesting salicylate acid that’s found in unripened fruit, particularly blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupes, dates, raisins, kiwi fruits, guavas, apricots, green pepper, olives, and tomatoes. It’s the same salicylate that is found in over-the-counter medical treatment Bayer aspirin, Doen’s Pills, Kaopectate, Pepto Bismol plus Benzoyl peroxide (PanOxyl) and other anti-acne treatments. Sulfites are another danger asthma sufferers face, with many found in preservatives. These preservatives can be found in numerous everyday foods, particularly dried fruits, so be sure to read your labels before consuming sulfites. Eliminate guymag.net

them from your diet completely often produces amazing results; or, should you choose to eat food preserved with sulfites, be aware of any reactions in your body they may trigger. When mold triggers your asthma attack, steering clear of mushrooms, yeasty breads, cheese and even soy sauce is a wise choice. Opting not to eat these certain foods will definitely lessen your chances of reoccurrences of this chronic condition. On the other hand, there are certain foods that will lessen your chances of future attacks including those that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which naturally fight against inflammation. Eat these foods, and help to minimize future bronchial inflammation. Foods rich in Omega-3 acids are salmon and other cold-water fish, sardines, mackerel and canola oil. Eating fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C is a way to help fight bronchitis, which can contribute to the severity of asthma attacks. Also choosing foods rich in zinc. Good sources for zinc are lean meats, oysters, yogurts and whole grains. Zinc also helps the body to create and keep a healthy immune system, which benefits your overall health. Chicken soup and its broth help thin bronchial mucus, which means less stress for the lungs. A complete and rounded diet that purposefully includes these foods greatly increases the chances of asthma sufferers to prevent future attacks, while improving their health in general. Being proactive and selecting a diet that fights back against disease is an all-natural approach to all-around good health. Eat well and breathe easier.
