Porn Star Michael Lucas Undresses Israel BY SHANE GALLAGHER

W

hen many people think of Israel, it is often in terms of modern war or ancient religion. But there is much more to the Jewish state than missiles and prayers. In “Undressing Israel,” gay porn auteur Michael Lucas and Israeli director Yariv Mozer examine a side of the Holy Land that is largely overlooked: its . The film spotlights a diverse range of local men, including a gay member of Israel’s parliament, a trainer who served openly in the army, a young Arab-Israeli journalist, and a pair of fathers raising their children. Michael Lucas also visits Tel Aviv’s vibrant nightlife scene and even attends a same-sex wedding in this guided tour of a country that has emerged as a pioneer for gay integration and equality.

Why is it important for you to introduce people to gay Israel? When Israel makes news, it is almost always in the context of terrorism or occupation. Israel is often cast as an oppressor and people who know little about the Middle East come away with the idea that it is an intolerant place that is only supported by those on the political right. Israel is actually the most liberal country in the area by far, and its very impressive record on gay-rights issues is a clear illustration of that. The gay lives that are shown in “Undressing Israel” do not exist in any of Israel’s Muslim neighbors. What surprises viewers most in the film? The variety and openness of Israel’s gay community, and how comfortably it is integrated into the rest of Israeli society. How do most Israelis view homosexuality? As tolerantly as Americans do—probably more so, overall. How does Israel compare with the USA in the battle for gay equality? Israel is considerably ahead of America in many important ways. For example, Israel’s parliament repealed prohibitions against sodomy in 1988, fifteen years before the American Supreme Court did the same. Discrimination against gays in employment has been prohibited nationwide since 1992. Gay Israelis can adopt their partners’ children, which is still illegal in many states. Gay people may sponsor their partners for immigration, which is not yet legal in America. Where is Israel in terms of gay marriage? Israelis are not as interested in achieving the word “marriage” as much as they are in the rights that it accords, particularly when it comes to having children. Although gay marriage does not exist in Israel—because of opposition by the country’s still-powerful religious minority—the state effectively recognizes common-law marriage for same-sex couples, which gives them many financial and legal rights that we do not yet possess in America. (Israel does officially recognize gay marriages performed abroad.) Is it true that Israel is experiencing a “gayby” boom? Absolutely, yes. It’s a very family-oriented culture. In fact, per capita, Israel has the high-

guymag.net

est number of children with gay parents in the world. I think that at least half of my gay Israeli friends have children. What’s it like to be a transsexual in Israel? Transsexuals face special challenges everywhere, but Israel is unusually accepting by international standards. One of the biggest celebrities in Israel is Dana International: a beautiful, openly transsexual pop singer who is widely loved by Israelis. In 1998, she was selected to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, a hugely popular annual competition held among many of the active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. She won. How does Israel’s nightlife scompare to the USA? It varies from city to city, but Tel Aviv’s club scene is comparable to New York’s. It has clubs, bars, discos, gay beaches and a huge Gay Pride parade. Is Israel safe? Yes. In 2002, Israel began construction on the West Bank Barrier, which the government said was essential to prevent would-be suicide bombers from entering Israel and attacking civilians. This concrete-based wall has indeed stopped suicide bombings and other attacks. And Israel proper is not a violent place. The rate of gun-related death there is less than one-fifth of what it is in the United States. What can the USA learn from Israel? Where gay rights are concerned, it is best to adopt a national policy rather than defer, as the USA too often does, to “state’s-rights” arguments that effectively create large regions of second-class citizenry. In closing, what is the overall message of “Undressing Israel?” I would like for people to take away a greater understanding of how progressive and tolerant Israel really is. People sometimes ask why we should care about Israel. This is why: because Israel shares our core values. And in some areas—like gay rights—it can even help inspire us to live up to those values a little better. For more information, visit undressingisrael-themovie.com.

One Direction at the BB&T Center

The Dog Whisperer

oUK pop band One Direction is the modern day guilty pleasure. Interestingly enough, the band placed third in the 2010 season of The X Factor. Now, the band has helped to create a piece of modern music history by sparking a newfound interest in boy bands. Ala ‘N Sync, the group has already gained a cult following, selling millions of albums and singles in an extremely short period of time – less than two years. The band is now so established that they had to even had to book two show dates here in South Florida: June 13 at the BB&T Center and June 14 at the American Airlines Arena. 7:30 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

oThe self-proclaimed “Dog Whisperer” brings his one-man show to Miami Beach with tips and tricks for dog-owners who need a helping hand. The self-taught canine expert’s television show, “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” is in its ninth season and is broadcasted in a whopping 80 countries worldwide. The Mexican-born dog trainer illegally crossed a US border at the age of 21, with no friends or family, and no knowledge of the English language. The wildly successful trainer is known for his work with overly aggressive dogs and is frequently bit and attacked. He will rarely

THE WEEK admit defeat, which has likely lead Milan to a clear path to success. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

She Just Came to Say “Hello” oCanadian duo Dragonette is known mostly for their collaboration with Martin Solveig on his 2010 single, “Hello.” The lyrics, “I just came to say ‘hello,’” will be forever burned into your brain – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Singer Martina Sorbara has successfully mastered modern pop music with highly addictive hooks and choruses that rival some of the most esteemed power-pop giants of the 80s. Dragonette’s last album, “Body Parts,” was one of the better dance albums of 2012, with a fresh take on modern bubblegum-pop that was received well by critics and fans alike. See the Canadian duo when they make a stop in Miami to support “Body Parts.” 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave Miami, 33136.

TBA special guest performers are sure to peak your interest, so don’t miss out on this fantastic event of American Pride in an LGBT setting. 7 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Phi Phi O’Hara Loves Her Phans oSee Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season Four contestant Phi Phi O’Hara in all of her fierce glory. The controversial drag queen received flack for her theatrics on the show, prompting anti-Phi Phi supporters to create a Facebook page titled, “Phi Phi O’Hara, Sashay Away.” But as we know, with haters comes fans, or in Phi Phi’s case, “Phans.” She may not have won season 4 (losing to Sharon Needles instead), but she still has a gained a dedicated fanbase due to being the “underdog” and “disliked” by so many. In the first episode of season 4, Phi Phi stated, “You don’t need RuPaul to be big. I can say for a fact that people who knew who Phi Phi was before I got here. So I don’t need RuPaul to say I’m sickening. I know I’m sickening.” Her special performance at The Manor is guaranteed to turn heads. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Charli XCX: The Long-Lost Spice Girl oPop singer Charli XCX has described her personal style as “Wednesday Addams meets Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice meets Baby Spice.” Interestingly enough, she hit the nail on the head with the description. Her sound is a blend of synths, addictive pop choruses with a hint of R&B slow jams for good measure, without ever feeling dated or cliched. Charli notes, “pop’s being taken seriously again now, which is eactly what it deserves.” You might also recognize the British singer’s name from the Icona Pop single, “I Love It,” which she wrote and was featured on. The single has catapulted Charli into a more mainstream success, but she’s still just a kid at heart: “Some of my music is still very teen oriented – I’m still pretty much a teenager – but there’s love in there.” 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

For months now, we’ve passed by the bright lime green awning marqueeing Sweet Bananas Grill, wondering what lie behind the front patio filled with misters and white outdoor furniture. TRAVEL

Birmingham, Alabama The Magic City Reinvents Itself—Again BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

The skyline of Birmingham is a wash of cinnamon, rust, and faded turquoise, silhouetted against Red Mountain, immediately south of downtown. It’s an area that’s been recently gentrified and flowering with new restaurants, art galleries, and the Alabama Ballet, an award-winning classical dance company. Alabama is a late bloomer where LGBT rights are concerned, with samesex activity only legalized ten years ago. During the following decade, even as the state has remained defiantly polarized, the city of Birmingham is radiant in its pride. American Airlines flies from Miami non-stop to Birmingham, known locally as the Magic City for its uncanny ability to reinvent itself. Over the years, the region has taken quite a few hits economically. Once a steel and limestone capital, the region became notorious for its civil rights struggle in the 1950s and 60s, as racially motivated bombings earned the city the nickname “Bombingham.” Birmingham is surrounded by long-established affluent neighborhoods where refinement and immaculately groomed lawns are the order of the day. There’s no better place to experience how the other half lives than to take a drive to Mountain Brook, which lies southeast of the city. In addition to grand estates, expect to be amazed at the number of trees providing shade in this 12-squaremiles of privilege, with 92 percent of the area under tree cover. For those who like to shop, the Wynfrey Hotel (1000 Riverchase Galleria), melds Southern hospitality with European elegance. This modern, fivestar hotel is directly connected to the Riverchase Galleria, featuring over 200 shops and stores, and Alabama’s top tourist destination. Less grand, but far more happening, the Aloft Hotel Birmingham (1903 29th Avenue S) is in the suburb of Homewood, on the edge of Soho Square with its chic shops and eateries. In the diverse downtown area, the place to absorb the heritage of the city is by strolling (or biking) through Railroad Park (1601 1st Ave S). This park is a 19-acre green space in downtown, situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th guymag.net

and 18th Streets. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus. The Alabama Theater (1817 3rd Ave N) is a must see. Built in 1927, the Moorish design has been fully restored and stands as a testament to the grander of classic movie palaces. The theater is featuring a summer long film festival that kicks off this week with “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and continues right through the end of August when “Gone with the Wind” provides an appropriate finale. The best—well, the only—gay dance club in town is The Quest Club (416 24th St S). There’s the usual drag shows (with a mint julep flavor), and a packed dance floor, in case rubbing young flesh ia your thing. It’s officially a private club, charging $5 cover for those 21 plus, and $10 from those 19-21. Our Place (2115 7th Ave S) is located close enough to the university that its primary customers are college students. This is both the good news and the bad news. Yes, they are young and cute, but they’re also naïve and curious. If Daddy is a good and patient teacher, this will be on your hit list. Looking for good Southern food? Look no further than Highlands Bar & Grill (2011 11th Ave S) where grits, gravy, biscuits and spicy seafood cover every base. It’s the Southern way. theguymag

How To Get A Porn Star Booty BY TOM

BONANTI

o

Summer has arrived and so has the season for vacations, pool parties, and afternoons at the beach. Have you seen the bathing suits they are wearing this season? Wow! I figured it might be a good time to do a column on how to get that butt in shape. Try these exercises, watch what you eat, and you, too, can have a porn star booty! For building gorgeous glutes, you can’t beat lunges. I prefer step-up lunges. Stand facing an aerobic step or stair of about mid-shin height or a little higher. Your feet should be a long stride away from the stair or step. Begin by taking an exaggerated step forward with your right leg, stepping with your foot onto the stair or platform. Bend the forward knee in line with the floor, but keep your rear leg as straight as possible as you drop it down to stretch the glutes. Push back off the front foot (the front leg does all the work; the back leg merely helps your balance) and return to the starting position. Now step forward with your left leg onto the platform and repeat the exercise. Alternate legs and do 12-15 reps of two to three sets per leg. You can do walking lunges using the same exaggerated lunge movement if you have the space in the gym or if you have access to a parking lot or track by your home. Holding a dumbbell in each hand as you lunge adds resistance to the exercise and makes it tougher.

Another great glute buster is the wide-stance squat. Any type of squat is sure to work the lower body, but wide squats will target the glutes most effectively. Stand erect, holding a barbell positioned on the back of your shoulders. The Smith machine can also come in handy here if you are doing squats on your own. Assume a stance with your feet spread wide apart and your toes pointed outward. Now squat down until your upper legs are parallel to the floor. As you descend, keep your chest elevated, shoulders back and abdominals tight. Push back to standing position immediately upon hitting the low point, pausing when you reach the top to consciously squeeze the glutes one to two seconds. Perform three sets of 10 – 12 reps. Here’s an ass shaper that requires no weight, just a flat bench. Kneel on a flat bench with the left knee, holding the bench with both hands for stability. Hang the right leg toward the floor with the knee bent 90 degrees, keeping the back flat and your head up. Pause with the leg lifted as high, and as straight, as possible, then lower the leg back to the starting position. After 10-12 reps, switch legs and repeat the exercise. Do several sets per leg. The above exercises are not only great for glutes, they are excellent overall exercises for your entire lower body. For more helpful workout tips, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com!
