Margaret Cho, Closeted Athletes and Divas That Just Won’t Quit Q&A with Josh Berman of Drop Dead Diva

o

You might not think the premise of the Lifetime series “Drop Dead Diva” would work, but the show, now in its fifth season, would prove you wrong. After shallow model Deb dies in a car wreck, her spirit enters the body of plump and plain Jane (Brooke Elliott), a young attorney with a few extra pounds on her frame. Throughout the course of the series, we’ve watched Jane morph into a much nicer and well-rounded person and a better lawyer. In an episode that recently aired on July 21, 2013, Jane came to the aid of a closeted athlete accused of murder. I spoke to Josh Berman, the openly gay creator/writer/producer of “Drop Dead Diva” about the episode and the success of the series itself.

think it’s sad that we still even have to talk about coming out. But that is a reality for all of us when we grow up in a straight world. There is a line in the script where the character of Scott says it shouldn’t matter to anyone that he’s gay, he shouldn’t have to tell people he’s gay, he should be able to live his life the way he wants to live it. I very much believe that. It’s no one’s business what you are. I think it’s a shame that we have to hide anything. But at the end of the day, nobody should be able to tell someone to come out; it’s got to be a personal decision. In this case, he has to out himself in order to save himself from a murder accusation. So he doesn’t have a choice. Without giving away the ending, I think this episode gets to have its cake and eat it, too. Hopefully it will be an inspiration for young men and women everywhere, whether they’re athletes or not, to feel comfortable about coming out of the closet because they will likely have a more enriched life.

Gregg Shapiro: I want to begin by saying congratulations on saving “Drop Dead Diva” from cancellation. How does it feel to have “Drop Dead Diva” entering its fifth season?

There is a famous AA saying about how “we are only as sick as our secrets.” With that in mind, “Secret Lives” addresses the kinds of things that people do to keep secrets, so would it be safe to say that you are a proponent of that school of thought?

Josh Berman: It feels absolutely fantastic! I love writing the show. I love these characters and I feel like the show got a second chance at life, kind of like (the character of) Deb got a second chance when she came back as Jane. The spirit on the set is so fantastic. Everyone feels, collectively, that we got a second chance and we all want to make the best show possible and I think we are. The only negative is that some people still think we’re canceled. I’m glad there are writers out there like you to spread the word. If people don’t know we’re back and they missed the first couple of episodes, Lifetime has made them available on demand, as well as on iTunes. Of course, we have new episodes Sunday nights. The “Secret Lives” episode of “Drop Dead Diva,” which just aired in July, focuses on the timely hot button issue of professional athletes coming out. Where do you stand on the subject? As a gay man, I think it’s important for everyone to come out when they’re ready to come out. I guymag.net

Well, I wish I’d come up with that quote [laughs]. It’s a beautiful quote. The only word I might object to is the word sick. I would say we’re only as lonely as our secrets. I don’t necessarily think the secrets make us sick but they certainly alienate us from people who love us. That’s probably where I would go with that. Gay and lesbian youth, before they come out, tend to be lonelier than anyone else because they can’t be honest with the people that love them. That’s just sad. The episode also deals with privacy, not only in the way that baseball player Scott is forced to give up his privacy to save his career, but also how it comes in to play in the world of sperm donors identities’. Do you feel like privacy is a thing of the past? You mean in the era of social media where everything we do is broadcast everywhere? JOSH BERMAN continues on page 18 theguymag

theguymag

guymagtube

17

>>>Josh Berman Q&A Continued [Laughs] Yes, in that era. Absolutely. We are training our children today to live their lives online without any privacy and not teaching them what that can lead to. In an era where everything we Tweet, everything we put on Facebook, doesn’t just go to our friends and family, but can go to complete strangers and corporate America and beyond. It is scary and I think there will be a time down the road where I think educating children about what they put online and the consequences will become part of parenting. But it’s all new now and it’s the first generation where the parents don’t necessarily understand what their children are doing. As they say, the Internet never forgets.

He has since moved on. He was nominated for an Emmy last season for “Mad Men” and he continues on that show. Ben’s character of Fred was never cast as a series regular. I always had a notion that we would revolve the guardian angels to be the perfect counterpoint to what Jane’s going through in her life. But we loved Ben so much and he stayed on the show for three years. He could have stayed as long as he wanted. That being said, this season I really wanted a guardian angel that would be a male manifestation of the Deb. Kind of a vapid model type, so that Jane who’s now evolved will get an angel who’s not involved. I love writing for Justin Deeley who plays Paul so much. He’s not only a gifted physical comedian but he’s great-looking and he’s really funny. He’s also so nice in person and our cast is having a great time with him. And he’s pretty much naked in every episode and I have no issues with that [laughs].

I love that line, too [laughs]. Queer icons, such as series co-star Margaret Cho as Jane’s secretary Teri, and Sandra Bernhard as a judge in the “Secret Lives” episode, are a regular occurrence on “Drop Dead Diva.” How important is it to you for those types of people to be a part of the show? I love having celebrity guest stars on the show. What so great about our show is that it’s a feelgood show. It’s the first show I’ve ever worked on where guest stars come to us to ask to be put on the show. Sandra approached us and asked if she could be in the episode. The irony is that I worked on some of the biggest shows in the history of TV. I spent six years on the first six seasons of the original “CSI” when we were bringing in 30 million viewers. I don’t recall a time where people were calling us to be on that show. I love “CSI,” but it’s a murder show; whereas “Drop Dead Diva” is an empowering show. (It’s) a great way to start your week on a Sunday night. Actors come to us. It feels great and we love to use those actors on the show. Ben Feldman, who played Jane’s hot guardian angel Fred, has been replaced by Justin Deeley as the equally hot Paul. [Laughs.] What precipitated that change? I have a special place in my heart for Ben Feldman, who played Fred. I was often accused of writing him like I would write myself; kind of a neurotic Jew. He and I remain very close friends. There is a chance he will come back this season. He has an open invitation to do so. He came back twice last year. We love him, the cast loves him.

18

guymag.net

theguymag

Is there anyone in your life who you consider to be your guardian angel? My guardian angel was actually my grandmother whose name was Deb. The lead character is named after her. My grandmother was a 4 foot 11, chubby Holocaust survivor who instilled in me the belief that I could do anything that I wanted with my life. When I sat down to write a new show, I wanted to do a show with the spirit of this woman would since passed away. I knew I couldn’t go to the networks to try and pitch them a show about my grandmother. Instead I put that spirit into Jane, played by Brooke Elliott. She’s my guardian angel for the show and in my life. You have had success writing and producing for television with “Drop Dead Diva” and you mentioned “CSI.” Do you have aspirations to cross over into film? I do love the big screen. I love feature films. I don’t like the pace. I don’t like the idea that something I write now may not make it to the big screen and it could take four or five years. I love that am currently writing an episode of “Drop Dead Diva” that will be on the air in one month. I love that I can remain topical and I can be thought-provoking. To me, in television ideas remain fresher because from page to screen, the time is so short. I would certainly sacrifice the big bucks to be able to write shows that have more of an impact. Do you have any new TV projects in the works? Yes, I have a deal with Sony. I will be pitching out ideas to networks in the next month or two. But I haven’t landed on the new show yet.

Barcelona-based brand Addicted is making waves this summer with a full line of swimwear and a provocative campaign to match, with three beach studs splashing it up in some bold looks from the collection. A sister company of ES Collection, Addicted strives for a younger, more daring and more affordable approach. The brand has released several swimwear pieces in the past, but this collection marks the debut of their first full swimwear line. The outcome speaks for itself.

THE WEEK

Fantasia, Metric, & the Jonas Brothers ____________________ Thursday

Metric: Because Sometimes Canadians Do It Better o You may remember Metric from their first commercial appearance: Their song “Grow Up and Blow Away” was used in a TV spot for Polaroid I-Zone in 2000-2001. The instant photo film printed consumers a random fortune with each shot. In the quirky ad, a doe-eyed girl and a boy trade glances while each gets a different fortune from a quick snapshot: The man’s was something akin to “run,” while the woman’s informed her that he was “the one.” At the time, “Grow Up and Blow Away” was one of those “oh this is that awesome song from the Polaroid I-Zone commercial” type of songs. They were recognized somewhat, but only seemed to capture an underground fan-base. Over the years, the Canadian band added a few LPs to their resume, but it wasn’t until “Black Sheep” (from the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) was released that the band really gained an American audience. The band earned a younger, more mainstream audience from the contribution to the film (which was followed by a similar effort through a song provided exclusively for the soundtrack for “Twilight: Eclipse”), and their past two albums have taken a younger, catchier approach to their alternative new wave sound. See the rising Canadian stars in the historic, intimate Fillmore Miami Beach before they upgrade to arenas. 8:30 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139. guymag.net

The Jonas Brothers Are All Grown Up oOften referred to as “modern-day Beatles,” the Jonas Brothers surprisingly dismiss the comparisons. When the title was first tossed around in 2008, the band took to their MySpace (on a side note, remember MySpace?) to address the issue, stating that while they were honored, they “definitely do not compare” themselves to The Beatles. However, the band did receive a very Beatlesesque reaction to their music and overall look, reinventing boy bands prior to the likes of One Direction and The Wanted. The brotherly trio has reunited after exploring solo projects (as well as fatherhood), and are now working on a follow-up album to their 2009 LP, “Lines, Vines and Trying Times,” titled “V” (their fifth studio album). The brothers are touring in preparation for the album’s fall release. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Fantasia’s Back oWe hope that Fantasia is back to stay. American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino (known simply as Fantasia on stage), followed on the heels of winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard, and was somewhat of a silent success. She slipped off the radar after her successful 2004 single, “I Believe,” and Platinum debut album “Free Yourself,” but THE WEEK continues on page 36 theguymag

35

THE WEEK appears to be coming back with a vengeance. Her newest single, “Without Me” features guest spots by Kelly Rowland, Missy Elliott, and has an incredibly old-meets-new R&B vibe to it. The single is catchier than an STD, and the video isn’t exactly hard on the eyes: Fantasia, Rowland and Elliott have never looked better. A career comeback from any Idol winner is a blessing--we’re still waiting Kelly Clarkson--so we’re ecstatic to see Fantasia experimenting and breaking new ground. Fantasia’s new album, “Side Effects of You,” is out now. 8 p.m. James L. Knight Center. 400 SE 2nd Ave, Miami, 33131.

Mad Decent Block Party oOnce upon a time, a Florida-born DJ/producer went from zero to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) hero, in a matter of a few short years. After founding his own LA based record label, Mad Decent, Diplo went on to sign artists like Baauer, Dillon Francis and Snoop Lion. The Fort Lauderdale Mad Decent Block Party boasts performances by Major Lazer (Diplo’s side project), Zeds Dead, Flosstradamus, Riff Raff and more. Trust us, this mini-festival is worth the price of admission. 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Outside of Revolution Live. 200 W Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Mona’s Sweet 16 oA local favorite, Mona’s Cocktail Lounge has been serving customers with personality and character for 16 years now, and it’s time to celebrate. The bar’s sweet 16 also doubles as a birthday party for owner Jerry, who is now 66 years young. The celebration doesn’t end with Jerry though: He’s a gentleman after all. Six times throughout the day, the bar will be giving away free drinks for 11 minutes for a total of 66 minutes, in honor of Jerry. That’s one way to celebrate! 12 p.m. to 3 a.m. Mona’s Cocktail Lounge. 502 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

DINING

Les Amies French Food Without the Attitude By Richard David Chamberlain

o

Squashed into the south corner of Deerfield Square, on South Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach, is a new French restaurant called Les Amies—“friends” en français. As any of you who have traveled to the land of baguettes and the Tour d’Eiffel can attest, the local brasseries in France are picturesque tiny affairs, where the food competes for attention with the attitude delivered by the servers. In France, they are mostly older men, who have been waiters for decades, and, as a result, deign it their place to make you feel as unworthy of their attention as that horsefly that occasionally lands on your béchamel sauce. either Apple Tart, Napoleon, Crème Caramel or Les Amies shares some of those problems and Chocolate Cake for $18.95. TRAVEL

Baltimore The Charmed City By Robert Elias Deaton

o

Imagine a city that counts among its present and former inhabitants cult director John Waters, baseball legend Babe Ruth, mystery writer Edgar Allan Poe, and blues singer Billie Holiday, and you get an instant feeling for Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland. More eccentric than cutting edge, Baltimore was once described by local bed and breakfast owner Barry Weiner as “like Martha Stewart, all dressed up but with a little lipstick still on her teeth.” Barry owns Scarborough Fair B&B (801 S Charles St at Montgomery St) with his partner Jeff Finlay. And like the city itself, Scarborough Fair is lovely, worldly, and just a bit strange. (What other B&B offers to give you trapeze lessons, for crying out loud?) It’s located in the center of the historic Federal Hill neighborhood of the city, where you can stroll through the charm of the City of Charm and pretend, even if it’s just for the moment, that you’ve stepped back in time to a gentler, more romantic time. We’d like to credit the four working fireplaces at Scarborough Fair, or the chocolate dipped strawberries and bubbly awaiting your indulgence, but in truth, it’s just a great and well-run homeaway-from-home that we suggest visiting even if you’re not staying there. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived right down the street with Zelda and daughter Scotty for five zany years, but not even the Fitzgeralds got to enjoy the housemade breakfasts that the Scarborough Fair serves daily. Picture lemon poppy seed waffles with limoncello sauce, Italian duck egg frittatas with farmer’s market fresh zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, and lots and lots of cheeses. Check in and you won’t want to ever leave. For around $300 round-trip, flights from Fort Lauderdale to Baltimore are frequent and take a short two-hours and 30 minutes. And unlike Washington DC to the south and Philadelphia to the north, Baltimore is largely an undiscovered gem. The gay and lesbian community here is small enough to still be united and yet large enough to include a shape and size for the pickiest prude. Sooner or later, everyone who is anyone ends up at the Baltimore Museum of Art (10 Art Muse-

guymag.net

um Dr). The museum is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Imagine strolling between works by Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, Rodin, Gainsborough, Van Dyck, Degas, Corot, Renoir, Pisarro, Matisse, Mondrian, Klee, and Kandinsky among others. In Baltimore—of all places. When it’s time to kick up your heels, or don a pair, head on over to Club Hippo (1 W Eager St, don’t you love it). It is not only one of the oldest gay clubs in Baltimore, it’s ultimately the most fun, since there is absolutely no pretention anywhere near this happening joint. It’s in the center of Mount Vernon, the local gay Mecca. Perch yourself here, and then go sniffing around the neighboring bars. Just up the street from Club Hippo, you’ll discover Grand Central (1001-1003 N. Charles St), a club with something for everyone. Drag shows? Check. Dance floor? Check. Video bar? Check. Leather sleaze? Check. We dare you to try not to enjoy this place. Get a LGBT history lesson at Leons of Baltimore (870 Park Ave), a gay bar that’s been in business for over 55 years. In its latest incarnation, it’s become the preferred place for bears and their kind to exchange scents and rub bellies. And if that’s not exciting enough, they are now serving lunch, dinner and late night snacks in their Dining Room called Singer’s. It gives charm a whole new meaning.

NUTRITION

Are You Stocking Your Fridge for Success? by Andy

o

All too often as I cruise down the grocery store isles, I see people aimlessly strolling through the store without a mere clue what they should be putting in the shopping basket in front of them, ever so leisurely passing by most of the items that should be going in their cart. These folks haven’t a clue that the choices made at this date in time can impact their health for a lifetime. There is, however, hope for these shoppers—and you! Making a few simple changes before going to the grocery store can improve your chances for successful eating throughout the week. Step one, before even leaving the house, come prepared with some sort of list. Write down what you plan to purchase, or put the list on a memo on your phone. Include multiple items that can be used in various dishes throughout the week. The list should have a balance of fresh fruits and vegetables. There should be a variety of several lean proteins. Your list should also include some Superfoods such as any fish oil or food containing Omega 3’s, nuts, quinoa, avocados and extra virgin olive oil. Try to keep the sugary cereals and snack foods to a minimum, but do NOT cut them out completely. Do that, and you’ll only end up binging out on those foods later. If you are still having trouble making a list or coming up with ideas for what to buy, try to take stock of the nutritional value of the foods you like. Try to choose foods that contain a high level of nutrients in relation to calories. The information is right there for you to discover on the nutrition label on the back

of the container. Now that you have got your list – in hand mind you – and have ventured back out through the maze they call a grocery store, take a deep breath and relax. Your path around this maze is quite easy. Most of the healthy choices that you have selected on your list – wink, wink – are mainly located around the outer edges of the store. Healthy produce and dairy abound, as well as choices of select cuts of meats, seafood and other deli-fresh items. Keep focused and don’t start meandering around through more center isles than are needed. This is where you get in trouble and start putting extra items in the cart that aren’t on the list. When choosing items for your next delicious meal, be sure to check the date of freshness. Try to pick the longest date in the future that the item will still be good for retail sale. Be sure to check the quality of the foods in your hand, make sure there are no off colors, smells or odors, or any visible spoilage. After your come back from this shopping adventure and have brought the all the goodness home, be sure to wash and prep any fruits and vegetables for easy grab-and-go snacks and salads. Cut up only half of the vegetables for the week up at a time. Try batch cooking your meals if pressed for time during the week. Cook large batches of the delectable proteins you have just selected, and prepare them in small meal portions. And congratulations. You’ve just taken the first steps to arming your body with the nutrition it craves.
