Around the World in 80 Jays Jay Brannan Talks about “Shortbus,” Sinead O’Connor and His New EP

On “Around the World in 80 Jays” (Nettwerk), out singer/songwriter takes listeners on a musical voyage. Singing in Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian on the nine-song EP, Brannan steps out of his comfort zone to interpret songs by Selena (“Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”), Elisa (“Eppure Sentire”), Alex C. (“Du hast den schönsten Arsch der Welt”), Teri Moïse (“Les poèmes de Michelle”) and Rebekah Del Rio (“Llorando”). He also performs English language versions of songs by Patty Griffin, Sinead O’Connor and Gotye. Brannan, who first caught the attention of many via his performance in the movie “Shortbus” (in which he also got to sing), as well as his multiple musical YouTube videos, took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for us at Guy Magazine. Gregg Shapiro: Cover tunes have long been a part of your repertoire, from your YouTube videos to your In Living Cover disc to the “Around the World in 80 Jays” EP. How did the concept for this new covers collection come about? Jay Brannan: I’ve been so lucky to do tons of touring internationally since I started getting to play shows and travel beginning around 2007. I’ve had the opportunity to play in all sorts of other countries across Europe and South America and Africa and Australia. One of the things that’s become sort of a tradition is to learn a song in the language of the place I’m visiting. My friend John Cameron Mitchell, the director of “Shortbus,” suggested that way back when. It became something that I started doing that I really love doing because I’m actually very interested in foreign language in general. People respond really well to it. I thought about recording some of those foreign language covers for a really long time but it was such a crazy idea that I figured I’d never get the chance to do it. Eventually I just decided, what the fuck, I’ve always just done what I want, who cares if it makes sense or not [laughs]. Would you say that you are comfortable enough to converse in any of the languages in which you sing? No, absolutely not. I definitely cannot speak any of those languages conversationally. I’ve taken lessons in several of them. I’m obsessed with foreign language. I have been since I was a child. It was one of the few things I had an attention span for in school. I can use it for travel purposes and stuff,

but I couldn’t have an actual conversation. I understand probably more than I let on. I can follow what people are talking about, not necessarily what they are saying exactly. Honestly, my pronunciation is probably absolutely horrible. It’s a shameless thing [laughs] but I plowed through regardless of whether I should or not. It’s admirable that you made the effort. [Laughs] The thing is, people really do appreciate it. They almost get more enjoyment out of the fact that I’m butchering their language by giving it a shot. There’s a comical element to it. JAY BRANNAN continues from page 16 With so much to choose from when it comes to songs by Patty Griffin and Sinead O’Connor, how did you go about selecting (O’Connor’s) “Black Boys On Mopeds” and (Griffin’s) “Top of the World” for the EP? Sinead O’Connor is one of my absolute favorites. I didn’t really become acquainted with her until way after everybody else, maybe five years ago. I realized how incredible she is. Her repertoire is relatively new to me and there are several songs that discovered that I wanted to sing and that was one of them. I like the simplicity of that song and the melody of it. The tone of her voice makes anything sound celestial. “Top of the World” is the second Patty Griffin song that I’ve done. I knew the Dixie Chicks version before I heard Patty’s. It’s a great song. It’s a newer cover I learned and I was into it at the time. Plus there’s the whole conceptual geographic element to the EP. Sinead O’Connor, who had the biggest hit of her career with a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has also regularly included cover tunes in her set-lists. As a songwriter yourself, can you please say something about the role that other people’s songs play in your creative life? Honestly, it took me a while to warm up to doing cover songs. When I first started, I always wanted to be a musician, but there was a part of me that felt like it wouldn’t be authentic to have a career where you just sing other people’s songs. That’s why I didn’t pursue it until years later. I somehow found myself actually writing my own material. It was so important for me to do original songs. I’m kind of a slow writer and I like singing more than I do writing. So I started doing cover songs as a way to keep singing, because my writing didn’t really keep up with my singing and desire to make more videos and to perform. There are so many great songs out there that speak to you or sound great in your voice so they feel good passing through your vocal cords. There is also a certain level of self-consciousness or vulnerability that is stripped away. When you’re singing someone else’s song, you know it’s a good song. You’re not evaluating it. You don’t have to perform it thinking, “I hate this song today. Or everyone’s thinking these words are so stupid.” None of that is an issue.

[Laughs] Definitely not like Patty Griffin. I haven’t had any Top 40 Jay Brannan covers. But yes, I’ve seen lots of covers on YouTube which has been surreal over the years. Very flattering. A lot of people do “Soda Shop,” and “Housewife.” Honestly, people have covered a lot of them. Which is amazing and surreal, to think that anybody had heard of my songs, let alone know the words and want to perform it on YouTube. What would it mean to you if a cover version of one of your songs became a hit? It would be awesome, depending on who did it and how they did it. It could come out in a way that you feel good about, but it could also come out in a way that you feel betrayed. It could go either way, but I’m sure it would be pretty exciting. You mentioned writer/director John Cameron Mitchell. Is there any chance that we’ll see you again on screen? I hope so. I get to audition every now and then. I’ve been very lucky working consistently in music since “Shortbus” came out. I’m constantly traveling and working on new projects musically, so I’m not around a lot to go on auditions and stuff. It would definitely be exciting to do more acting work.

Patty Griffin, on the other hand, has had her biggest hits with other people’s covers of her songs. Are you aware of other people covering your songs?

Grease is the Word o In 1971, a little Broadway musical named “Grease” was born. The production invited viewers to travel back in time to the 1950s to reminisce the days of greasers, sock hops and teenage rebellion, because why not? 1978 saw the release of John Travolta’s last good feature film, based on the 1971 production of the same name, which brought the songs up to “cult” status. Thanks to the film, “Summer Loving” has been covered more times than Anthony Weiner’s weiner, and Olivia Newton-John is still touring (surprisingly enough). The film went on to surpass the stage production in terms of popularity and revenue, but the musical has still seen its fair share of revivals, making it Broadway’s fourteenth longest-running show. Alabama: Back to the Bowery oAmerican rock/country band Alabama is now in their 40th year of making music: That’s a little over two Justin Biebers if you need some sort of unit of time to fully grasp the longevity of their career. Alabama was formed by cousins Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry who grew up together in – you guessed it – Fort Payne, Alabama. The band decided they wanted to pursue music full-time in 1973, quit their day jobs, and moved to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. There, they landed a gig playing at The Bowery for the summer as the house band with little to no pay (they lived primarily off of tips). Now, 40 years later, the band has reunited in their “Back to the Bowery” tour, returning to their roots (they even kicked off the tour at The Bowery) and their fans. 8 p.m. Hard Rock. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

OneRepublic oYou may remember OneRepublic from their 2007 single, “Apologize,” most likely the reremixed version from Timbaland that received major play on radio stations across the world. It seemed as if the world was Timbaland’s oyster in 2007, with singles “Give It to Me,” “The Way I Are” and “Apologize” all climbing the charts from his album “Shock Value.” OneRepublic’s single “Apologize” broke many records, including the biggest radio airplay in the history of Billboard’s North American Pop Music category, going on to reach number one in 16 different countries including Germany, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden (aka the kings and queens of pop music) and more. Wine Down Wednesdays at Dapur o“Tapas” is a fancy way of saying small plates

(or “appetizers” as we used to call them), and at Dapur, the plates are flying out of the kitchen. The menu is a fusion of Asian foods, with everything ranging from Korean BBQ ribs to kobe beef sliders which have ditched the traditional bun and replaced it with crispy rice patties instead. The sushi bar gets creative without being too unfamiliar (seriously, who would think to combine pineapple and strawberries with tuna?), and the selection of sake is nothing short of phenomenal. On Wednesdays, Dapur offers something special to get you through your hump day: Wine Down Wednesdays. San Antonio, Texas The Alamo Is Just the Beginning By Robert Elias Deaton

“Remember the Alamo” is more than a battle cry in San Antonio, Texas. It’s a way of life in America’s eighth largest city (with a population of 1,200,000). Of course, the Alamo (300 Alamo Plaza) is the most popular tourist attraction in town, and a trip to the mission is de rigueur for anyone visiting. This is more than the place where Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie lost their lives defending Texas’s independence against the Mexicans. It has come to stand as a symbol of resistance despite impossible odds. And, truth be told, it is an inspiring place. But that certainly is not the beginning and end of San Antonio tourist sights. Our personal favorite is the River Walk, which is a network of walkways that meander along next to the San Antonio River, one level below the street. It extends from the Alamo to the Rivercenter Mall (a shopping center with an AMC Theater); past the Arneson River Theater, a 600-seat outdoor arena whose stage is on the opposite side of the river from the audience seats; along Marriage Island (which is an islet in the river used for weddings: and past La Villita Historic Arts Village (which was originally an Indian settlement and became one of San Antonio’s first neighborhoods). Further along River Walk is the remnants of HemisFair ’68, a world’s fair whose themed character was a dragon named Luther, created by Sid Krofft. Krofft later reinvented Luther as the character H.R. Pufnstuf, who was the star of his own NBC series. River Walk continues to flow next to the Tower Life Building (home to the first Sears, Roebuck store in the city), the San Antonio Museum of Art (housed in the original Lone Star Brewery) and ends in the now closed Pearl Brewery (currently guymag.net

being redeveloped by new owners into a residential and retail site). Okay, when you’re thinking gay nightclubs in San Antonio, your choices are lead by Bonham Exchange (411 Bonham). Five dance bars in one, each with its own d.j., Bonham Exchange is large, loud, and full of go-go boys who wear next to nothing—just like you love it. Bar crawl alert: the drinks at Bonham Exchange are STRONG. Yes, even for you. While we’re talking go-go, the boys are sizzling hot at Heat (15 N Main Ave) where the ultimate White Party is held next Saturday, August 17. For those into leather, run, do not walk, to the Annex (330 San Pedro Ave) where on Friday and Saturday nights, leather rules. This is, of course, still Texas, the state where the two-step rules. The cowboys come out to play at Silver Dollar Saloon (1812 N Main Ave), where country music is the sound of choice. Expect plenty of cowboy boots and hats among the men who call the Silver Dollar home. Yes, there are drag shows, and yes, there is pool, but the real entertainment is on the dance floor. Flying into San Antonio from Fort Lauderdale is easy enough with a connecting flight on United Airlines through Houston, Texas, for an inexpensive round-trip fare under $300. Getting to San Antonio and enjoying the place is a given. Still, Texas is a state that does not recognize same-sex marriages, and has paid the price in tourism dollars because of it. Many in the LGBT community have insisted that travel to Texas be boycotted. We, at Guy Magazine, recommend you not only travel to Texas, you prove to Texans that you find them great despite their politics. Lead by example.

Inside the World of a Personal Trainer by Tom

Clearly, I have one of the best jobs in the world! As a personal trainer (and licensed massage therapist and owner of my own gym), I get to work with some of the finest people in South Florida. It’s hard work and long hours, but I have the privilege of helping them live longer, healthier lives. As a trainer, my work is not just about juggling weights and counting reps. It’s much more. A CFT (certified fitness trainer) has a responsibility to provide a safe, happy atmosphere and situation where clients are challenged and pushed, but also respected and affirmed for their hard work and commitment. Is this always an easy and pretty task? No, but for the most part, my clients seem to get results and have fun at the same time. I’d like to remind anyone who presently uses, or is thinking of hiring a personal trainer, what they need to look for in this individual. First, make the trainer show proof of an up-to-date certification and liability insurance. Secondly, watch the trainer in action with other clients. Is he attentive and does he take notes? Or is he on the phone or always texting? If you are going to make the personal and financial commitment of hiring a trainer, get a professional! Most trainers will meet with a prospective client for a free consultation before either party makes a commitment. Make sure to write down your questions and fitness goals. Ask this person about his training philosophy, methods, style, etc. and how he would go about helping you to achieve guymag.net

your objectives. Listen to him and watch his body language. Inquire about the trainer’s flexibility and availability so that you can coordinate your schedules. Once you’ve found the right person, remember that you as a client have responsibilities to your trainer. Treat your trainer with the same courtesy and respect as any other paid professional in your life. Everyone is occasionally tardy, but some people make it a habit. It’s not cute or fashionable to be rude. Make the commitment to yourself and your trainer to show up on time, warm up and leave your damn phone in the car. Cancellations are not acceptable. You would not put up with a personal trainer who blows you off. Everyone, on occasion, has emergencies. But last minute texts and calls to cancel on a regular basis are rude and inconsiderate. This type of client is a royal pain. If you have to cancel, at least give your trainer a 24-hour notice, or expect to be charged for the session. If you find yourself swamped at work or stuck in traffic, simply call your trainer, apologize and ask if you can reschedule your session. Hiring a personal trainer is an investment in your health. Expect nothing less than the best service from your CFT. Realize also that this is a relationship and you must do your part to make it successful.
