With Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas just around the corner, you’re going to have your hands full with your family and friends. Luckily, fall/winter happens to be the best time for live entertainment, with plenty of big names coming through the tri-county area. We’ve put together a list of the shows that we know you won’t want to miss. Please note that all of these shows could potentially sell out before the day of show. If one of these shows is up your alley, get those tickets before it’s too late.

The Shows You Need Tickets for Now

Pretty Lights and Bassnectar at Bayfront Park Oct 18 and 19

Fall

If you’re looking for dubstep or dance music, it’s slim pickings this year. It seems like most of the electronic/dubstep DJs have opted to focus on the “spring break” fan base, targeting the months of March and April. Luckily, every now and then we’ll get a random big name electronic producer to close out the year (Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, etc.). Though no year-end dubstep parties have surfaced (yet), Pretty Lights and Bassnectar will be returning to Miami for two nights of co-headlining insanity, October 18 and 19 at Bayfront Park. Their euphoric, bass-laden beats will set the mood for you to cut loose and have a little fun for a night (or two). For more information visit livenation.com

Emeli Sande at Fillmore Miami Beach Oct 11

English/Scottish singer Emeli Sande has been blowing up big time overseas, and now, America is finally catching on (akin to Adele circa her second album). The singer has even been praised by the always-critical Simon Cowell, calling Sande “his favorite songwriter at the minute.” The singer’s album “Our Version of Events” stayed at number one on the UK charts for seven consecutive weeks, which may have had something to do with her involvement in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where Sande performed in both the opening and closing performances. Catch her in the intimacy of the Fillmore before she’s filling up arenas. To buy tickets, or for any other information, go to fillmoremb.com

Concert Guide: Jessie Ware with Mikky Ekko at Revolution Live Oct 25 Jessie Ware is another UK superstar who is just now starting to gain momentum on this side of the pond. Though this is Ware’s first US tour, she’s no stranger to the stage. Ware performed live with DJ and producer SBTRKT, and has recent played a slew of festivals, as well as successful UK and European legs. Now on her US run, she’s making a stop at Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale. She’s signed to PMR Records (home to sultry R&B singer Sam Smith) – a very hip, small British record label. Opening for Ware is Mikky Ekko, best known for his guest spot on Rihanna’s single “Stay.” Visit jointherevolution.net for more information.

Cyndi Lauper at Hard Rock Live Nov 9

Cyndi Lauper is the definition of fun. She really just does not care what anyone thinks about her, and that’s why she’s so likeable. The long-time LGBT activist doesn’t seem to have much down time either. Forever on tour, releasing new material, aggressively participating in LGBT-related issues and even dipping her feet in the political pool (eventually performing at the 2008 Democratic National Convention). She’s a talented role model for the masses – both gay and straight. Visit hardrocklivehollywoodfl.com for tickets.

Janelle Monae at Fillmore Miami Beach Nov 23 Just before Thanksgiving strikes, Janelle Monae will be returning to Miami to bring her bubbly, fun demeanor to the stage for a performance that won’t soon be forgotten. Monae’s recently released album, “The Electric Lady,” was a success both critically and sales-wise, with Billboard reporting that the LP “should give the singer her biggest sales week ever.” The album is garnering rave reviews, and we know that she’s an extremely energetic performer, so don’t miss out on this opportunity. This show will definitely sell out, so act fast.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at American Airlines Arena Nov 24 Macklmore and Ryan Lewis made a bold move with their song and video, “Same Love,” pushing for marriage equality and gay rights. The duo’s album, “The Heist,” sold well long before “Same Love” really gained momentum, with the overthe-top single, “Thrift Shop.” Maybe it was the song you loved to hate, and you were okay with that. But then came “Same Love,” which really helped put the duo on the map, making them known for more than a song about looking fly in vintage clothing. Their recent win at the MTV Video Music Awards allowed them to speak on behalf of LGBT supporters in an attempt to voice concerns with homophobia in the hip hop industry and the rest of the world.

Fall Concert Guide: Kanye West at American Airlines Arena Nov 29

Kanye West is known for his mouth, both on and off the stage. We know he isn’t really concerned with what people have to say about him and his music, which is ironic because his fan base is huge and incredibly loyal. Though the rapper has recently had his first son (North...West), his newly released album, “Yeezus,” is anything but light and fun. It’s dark, wild, and unpredictable, which just so happens to be the formula for a perfect Kanye West album. The singer/rapper will be hitting up the “305” (for one ngiht only) at the American Airlines Arena, and tickets just went on sal, so head on over to ticketmaster.com or livenation.com

THE WEEK

Lisa Lampanelli, Turnabout and Fall Follies from a Gay Chrous

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _by_P_atrick _ _ R_obert ____ Thursday

9/19

Jump Start Thursday o The weekend begins on Fridays, but college kids and gay guys tend to start their parties much sooner. What better way to kick off your weekend than by watching drag queens lip-synch their hearts out? Some may say with a mason jar of liquor, yet Village Pub disagrees, hosting its Jump Start Thursdays event with a drag performance starting at 9pm, featuring Sharee Ross, Dee Dee Van Cutt, and Anastasia Ross. If you’re not getting sauced across the street at Alibi, Village Pub may be the best place to enjoy less alcohol and more show tunes. 9 p.m.Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

9/20

Disney on Ice oThe title for this version of the only watchable ice spectacular this side of Michelle Kwan is “Heroes and Princesses”. Being gay is all about trying to find either your inner hero or princess, right? So bring your boyfriend (whether he be hero or princess) and relive your youth watching Belle, Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White, and Rapunzel find their princes. There may be a parade of awe-inspired children or, less happily, a bunch of crying babies. If you’re not afraid of such family-friendly entertainment, Disney on Ice can be a fun diversion. 7 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

Fridays at Johnny’s o What’s the best way to unwind after a long week of work? If you’re answer was a strip club, you might be a sex addict. Either way, Johnny’s has more than just a bevy of thongs and lap dances. Enjoy drinks at the bar, grooves on the dance floor, or indulge in a little dollar bill unloading. Have you spent the week daydreaming about that one special stripper giving you the eye last week? Do you just see all people as objects for your amusement and would like to exert the financial powers patriarchal society affords you? Well, then, come stop on by this Broward Blvd favorite. Maybe not exactly a perfect date night, though. For that, refer to the above post.

Saturday

9/21

Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley: Locked and Reloaded Tour oCountry music goddess, prior finalist of “Nashville Star,” and proud owner of a handgun license brings her protective charms to West Palm Beach, alongside fellow country superstar Dierks Bentley. Miranda Lambert burst on the scene in 2003 and has since had several commercially and critically successful albums. Dierks Bentley heard her music and knew right away that he wanted to perform with her. Back in 2011, he did just that, with the Locked and Loaded Tour. Now, they are back together, with more ammunition. Gay country music fans be alert: guns are not permitted inside the theater. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphithteatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus Fall Follies oThe Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus has won raves and special recognition throughout their 27-year tenure as one of Broward county’s greatest specialty acts. With founder, Dr. Gary Keating, back to directing, they will be using their entertaining skills for a more intimate evening. For a special night only, the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus will present Fall Follies, a night of cabaret style entertainment at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. Special guests and chorus members alike will sing, dance, and all around just amuse. 8 p.m. Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Il Volo oThese adorable Italian young men conquered Italy’s TV talent show and somehow became popular stateside, too. The Italian operatic pop singers are no strangers to South Florida—they actually taped their latest PBS Christmas special here last month. Singers Piero Barone, Ignazio Bschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble started their careers a mere four years ago in 2009. They will be inspiing thousands of fans, performing fan favorites like “Il Mondo” and “O Sole Mio.” 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132. THE WEEK continues on page 36

THE WEEK ____________________ Sunday

9/22

Lisa Lampanelli Comes to the Hard Rock o Known for her intense racial insensitivity, Lisa Lampanelli has been a favorite of gay culture since she started her rise to fame. Lisa Lampanelli routinely lampoons her own attraction to black men (and their most prominent sexual organ), disparages every race, and jabs at the politics of gay sex. She’s been an outspoken supporter for gay rights. In 2011, The Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest her show. Her response? She donated $1,000 to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis for each protester, totaling $50,000. Her most famous television appearance came when she worked for the almighty Donald as a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice. There comes a time for most overweight comediennes when they risk ruining their career by losing weight, and Lisa Lampanelli has done just that, looking rather trim as of late. Hopefully, her sexiness doesn’t detract from her vicious, cynical perspective? 7 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, FL 33314.

9/23

Tragedy Walking, Tragedy Talking o One of the most alarming statistics for gay culture is the rate of suicide within members of the community (whether young or old). The FISP (Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention) hopes to curb this epidemic. Neighborhood gay bar Rumors is joining in the effort. In order to help raise money for FISP, Rumors is hosting a drag queen night, featuring performers such as Daisy Deadpetals, Kiki Carmichael, and Missy MooseKnuckles (as well as some surprise guests). Drink specials, live entertainment, and red carpet awards make this a benefit you can’t miss. 9 p.m. Rumors Bar and Grill. 2426 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

in the 1950s, kites have had a strange road to its current nostalgic space in America’s heart. What’s your favorite: fighter, miniature, or Japanese? 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture (inside of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts). 51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

Flying High: Story of Kites o Some gay men choose to fly high in different ways, but maybe as a youth there was a time when “highness” referred to the beauty of a delicate kite floating in the wind and not the ramifications of a night with a bunch of powdery white stuff. The grace and majesty of all different types of kites are exhibited at the Cornell Museum in Delray Beach. From its origin in China 3,000 years ago to its heyday in popular culture

The Sound of Music o A woman who can control a bunch of bratty children and make clothes out of curtains? I’m sure most gay men can find that impressive, especially if she’s capable of eluding the Nazis by trekking up a bunch of hills. The classic musical comes alive, again, with all your favorite hits: “Edelweiss”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, and “My Favorite Things”. Come watch as important decisions about love, nunnery, and political allegiance are made. 2 p.m. Wick Theater. 7901 N Federal Hwy, Boca Raton, 33487.

TRAVEL

Charlotte, North Carolina The Day the Queen City Turned White By Robert Elias Deaton

o

We celebrated Christmas 2010 in Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina. And as if Bing Crosby waved a magic wand, the skies opened up and snow began to fall. Not a lot, mind you, since this is the South, after all. But even 3.5 inches is enough to make things white. As you might guess, it’s unusual to have snow in Charlotte, with icestorms the common winter pattern. The city has a subtropical climate for much of the year, with last year’s high of 106, on July 4th weekend, setting a record. The city’s nickname, the Queen City, is slightly misleading, especially among the LGBT community, who might otherwise expect a large homosexual population. Well, you’ve got the wrong Queen, honey. In this case, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who at the age of 18 wed the young King George III of England and became the first royal residents of Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace). In any case, Charlotte became Queen one year before Charlotte, the city, was born. While the city took a few dozen years to take hold in any significant way, when it finally found its direction, Charlotte ended up to be the financial center of the South (and the second largest financial center in North America—after New York). It’s the headquarters for Bank of America, and the Eastern headquarters for Wells Fargo Bank. So, there’s never a problem finding a handy ATM here. For nights on the town, run, do not walk, over to The Scorpio (2301 Freedom Dr). At 45 years young, Scorpio is Charlotte’s oldest gay nightclub complex. It’s open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but the club is famous for its Friday night Life’s a Drag show (with hostess Tiffany Storm—she of the white lipstick and pale lavender eye shadow). From the oldest to the newest, don’t miss a trip to Marigny Dance Club (1440 S Tryon St #110), which took its inspiration from Faubourg Marigny,

guymag.net

a neighborhood of New Orleans. This is supposed to explain the giant Swarovski crystal chandelier, the red velvet seating in the elevated VIP area, the back patio called Macaroon, and the lounge--a quieter bit of business called the Empire. Nothing, however, can explain the red-flocked wallpaper that stretches floor to ceiling. We would scream “bordello,” but no one would hear us anyway. As our regular fans know, it doesn’t take much to have us taking off our clothes in public. At the Woodshed Lounge (4000 Queen City Dr), they even enourage it. On Thursday nights, it’s Deep Throat UnderWear Night, where you might just win yourself a $25 bar tab if your undies have the best fit in Charlotte. The Woodshed is the place to find bears and cubs on the weekends, along with hairy hospitality. The Nickel Bar (2817 Rozzelles Ferry Rd) has the distinction of being the only African-American owned gay bar in the city. It has s a culturally diverse clientele, with some major black strippers on the first and third Saturday of each month. Even better than a white Christmas.

Learn to Relax and Get Fitter! by Tom

Bonanti

o

If you want to remain productive at work and in the gym, you’ve got no other choice. You’ve got to learn to chill out and relax. Yes, I know, this is easier said than done. The economy sucks, the world situation teeters on disaster (well, when the hell hasn’t it in the last several centuries or so?) and you’ve got a schedule at work that is blistering. I know, there is so much to do and if you’re not actually doing it, you’re thinking about doing it. Yet in order to stay productive and at least moderately sane, you’ve got to give yourself permission to slack a little now and then and just relax. It sure beats having a heart attack or stroke. Here are a few tips to follow that will help you live longer and, yes, maybe even enjoy yourself a little! Learn to carry a small notebook with you everywhere – to work, to the gym, etc. Jot down anything that occurs to you that needs to be done. Go through the list now and then. Cross off what you don’t need to do, and you’ll feel lighter. Then as you work your way through the list, check off what you’ve accomplished and you’ll feel more in control of your life. You’ve got to learn the value of sleep. Whether you are a bodybuilder, business executive, or just a regular person, sleep and rest are essential to your mind and body. Eight to twn or even 12 hours of sound shut-eye are essential to good physical and guymag.net

mental health. When you get home from work, try a little stretching. Chances are you have been sitting most of the day and your lower back is killing you. Take a few minutes and lie flat on your back on the floor, in a yoga position called shavarsana. First, bring you knees up so that your lower back touches the floor. Lower your legs straight out and your back will be in a good position for relaxing. Let your feet flop outwards, have your arms a little out from your sides with palms facing upward. Tilt your head forward a little so that your neck is in a relaxed position. Now, go through your whole body mentally focusing your attention on one area at a time. Start with the soles of your feet and work your way up to your temples and forehead. Think “relax” as you breathe in and out deeply and slowly at each area. Visit a spa. There are at least a dozen spas listed in this publication with professional services geared toward men. If you can’t get away to a day spa, treat yourself to a full body massage at home. Just call your massage therapist and schedule! And finally, make time for your friends. Don’t let stress rob you of one of life’s greatest gifts-friends. Consider the bigger picture to see where your deepest satisfaction lies and then try to live life to the fullest! For more ideas on how to chill, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.
