The Scene

Ringing in a Gay New Year Greater Fort Lauderdale-Style By Alex Vaughn Thursday, December 13 was a day to be remembered (and my odometer has the added digits to prove it: it was a bit of a chase!), with a calendar of events all to itself, as Gayer Fort Lauderdale came together in its various and sundry tribes to pay tribute to the holidays. The rainbow flags were flying outside the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas Boulevard that evening, to mark the GLBX 4th Anniversary Party. (This marked an historic moment, the first time the landmark hotel has flown a rainbow flag.) On hand to celebrate were many of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s movers and shakers including LGBT rights activist and Fort Lauderdale City Commission candidate (and former Vice Mayor) Dean Trantalis, GLBX Chairman Michael Faerber, media strategist Chris Caputo, Geph Scarr of Scarr Insurance, Smart Ride Founder Glen Weinzimer, Pride Center Czar Robert Boo, Bruce Bogan and many others. Also on hand was two-time Broward County Mayor Kristin Jacobs, who said she was thrilled that, “the GLBX is crossing counties and creating a synergy between” Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach. A hop, skip, and a jump up Las Olas to the New River Fine Art Gallery found the Law Offices of George Castrataro putting their muscle into the Holiday Spirit, for the second year in a row hosting a toy drive to benefit the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation. Guests enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres (after dropping their toys at the door). Along with the fine art on display, guests were treated to music from Sage McBride, who at the tender age of 20 has already performed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and President Obama. As well as proceeds from the toy drive, 10 percent of all art sold that night also went to the Foundation. Blue Martini in The Galleria played host for the GLLN (Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Network) holiday event. The canapés were delicious (as were the two free martinis: I chose pomegranate!). The event doubled as a fundraiser, with the suggested $10 donation at the door benefiting the Community Foundation of Broward. Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick, Dan Oropesa from Mack Planet, 2012 Power Couple

o

Drew Miller and Kevin Murdoch, as well as Kristopher Fegenbush from the Pride Center all enjoyed the holiday cheer. On Friday, December 14, Aventura Mall was The Scene, not just for the expected Christmas shopping, but to see who would be one of the lucky first 250 shoppers for the H&M Grand Opening, who received their own $300 gift cards! H&M has long been big in Europe, in part due to their collaborations with major fashion players like Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, Madonna, and most recently Versace. On Saturday night, December 15, the north end of Wilton Drive witnessed what for many was the end of an era, as Matty’s on the Drive had their closing party, marking the end of their four-year run. Many familiar faces turned up to celebrate and commiserate including shutterbug Michael Murphy, Greg Phelps from Village Pub, and Carol Moran of New Moon (which hosted Matty’s “Wild Wednesday,” and its 75 cent drinks on December 19). Matt Auslander worked the crowd while GM Jason Basilico said on the microphone, “Family is family. I am so proud of my staff, they are here to the bitter end,” and segued into the Sister Sledge anthem “We Are Family.” A nice send off. Here’s hoping that the rest of your 2012 paves the way for a healthy and memorable 2013.

THE WEEK By Grant James

Fireworks, Sharks, and Video Game Art in the Park The Week, 12/26 to 1/1

The Shark Exhibit at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale

Wednesday

12/26

“The Art of Video Games” oLong an underappreciated art form, the edgy and evocative art found in video games is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Spanning 40 years of video game history, this traveling Smithsonian exhibit brings together iconic graphics that rocked everything from Atari to PS3. Still images, interactive stations, and video clips make this fun for all ages. Through January 13, at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton.

Sharkbait Hoo Ha Ha oThe Shark Exhibit at Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale really has something for everyone. While their pearly whites don’t pose a threat up close, the exhibit still has some teeth, providing moments of terror (as much as a lifelike sculpture can, anyway). From a section devoted completely to “Jaws,” to interactive games for kids, check this out before it closes on January 6. MOA/FL, 1 E Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.

12/27

Bibbidi-Bobbidy-Boo: Cinderella oThe story of Cinderella’s rags to riches tale is the American dream, that one day everyone can “find love in a hopeless place.” The 65-member State Ballet Theatre of Russia takes to the stage in a ballet rendition of the classic folk tale, which has its roots in antiquity. A detailed production and full symphony orchestra bring to life this timeless story of romance. At the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Dr.

Johnny’s Fireworks Dancers oFor those who can’t wait til midnight on New Year’s Eve (or won’t be able to make fireworks of their own). Johnny’s Bar presents five full nights of “nonstop male fireworks displays,” from December 27 through New Year’s Eve. Suggestion: Wear nothing flammable (and drag persons, mind the hair spray). 1116 W Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. THE WEEK continues on page 34

But Do They Hang in a “Buffalo Stance?” oIf you’re looking for an eclectic way to celebrate the holidays, grass-roots band Donna the Buffalo may be just up your alley. The band combines a popular and eclectic mix of folk, Zydeco, reggae, electronic, Americana, and rock into a delicious soufflé that’s purely original. The band was called one of the hardest working eclectic bands playing for audiences today. 100 SW Third Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.

Turning Japanese: GaySha oAlthough Japan rivals us for technological wizardry, no one beats good old American drag queens. The Ladies of The Manor are turning Japanese for a Far East-themed event that will have you moving Gangnam Style (or maybe Like a G-6). With music by DJs JPS and Miik, and featuring performances by Estephania, TP, and Sasha. The Manor, 2345 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors.

Gladys Knight: Grandma’s Got 7 Grammys (And She Owns a Chicken & Waffles Chain!) oThe “Empress of Soul” comes to Hard Rock Live a living legend and the inspiration for a legion of strong female performers who followed, including Adele and Amy Winehouse. Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, One Seminole Way, Hollywood.

Don’t Resist the Temptation: “Forbidden Broadway” oTo say that “Forbidden Broadway” is cheeky would be an understatement. The musical, which has been quirkily poking fun at America’s biggest

B.B. King: The Thrill Isn’t Gone oThe blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time (ranking Number 6 on a Rolling Stone list of 100). B.B King lent his name and talent to Little Kids Rock in 2001, providing free musical instruction and instruments to school children in economically challenged areas. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and still averaging 100 shows a year (at the tender age of 87), he is really the King. A must-see for any blues enthusiast. At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

It’s Spelled “Bangkok:” New Year’s Eve at The Manor oOne Night in Bangkok is an East Asian-themed gala celebrating the magic and decadence of the Orient. Join the rest of the world to ring in 2013 in lavish style. A live Times Square remote telecast ensures a timely first kiss for 2013 at the moment the ball drops (so to speak). No cover, a champagne toast at midnight, balloon drop, and first class

production featuring Erika Norell and special guests are sure to make this party elegant and memorable. The Manor, 2345 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors.

Georgie’s Alibi Times Square oA Gayborhood tradition that keeps getting better with age, Alibi is famous for its annual New Year patio/parking lot party. With complimentary champagne toast and no cover, a balloon drop and prizes to ring in 2013 with fun and friends. The temperature in New York City is expected to hit 3 degrees on New Year’s Eve. Enjoy all the excitement of Times Square, from the comfort of the tropics: the perfect taste of New Year. At Georgie’s Alibi, 2266 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors.

She Won’t Grow “Au Pair:” Mary Poppins oEveryone’s favorite English nanny (no, not McPhee) sings, dances, flies, and offers worldly maternal advice. It makes you want to go fly a kite. Among her lessons: properly take your medicine, cavorting with chimney sweeps is socially acceptable, and—when the whim strikes—pop open your umbrella and fly away (too bad, so sad, orphans). In a role made famous by the phenomenal (and occasionally cross-dressing) Julie Andrews, Poppins makes her return to stage on New Year’s Day at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.

HEALTH

Here’s to a Fit and Healthy 2013! By Tom Bonanti

o

This is the time of year when we are swimming in lists of things we need to do, or should stop doing. These are called resolutions. You’ve seen there’s; now here’s mine: Trainer Tom’s New Year’s Fitness Resolutions for 2013: Resolution 1: Get an early start. Research shows that people who eat a good breakfast tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and bad cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you eat a variety of foods (steel-cut oatmeal, whole grain toast, yogurt, fresh fruit) rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. While you’re at it, try working out in the morning if your schedule permits. You may not have time to get to the gym, but a quick power walk or some other form of cardio will help you burn fat all day long and improve your mood, too. Resolution 2: Review and revise your training regimen. Periodize your training schedule for optimum results. Look upon the year ahead as one big macro-cycle, with goals and objectives such as getting your body fat below 18 percent, and putting on 5 lbs of muscle. Break down the bigger cycle into meso-cycles of maybe three or four month periods. Assess your progress, vary your workouts, and stay consistent. Read and take measurements throughout the year. Resolution 3: Get some sleep. Getting 7 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep is essential to your physical and mental health. Besides making you cranky and exhausted, other symptoms of poor sleep or lack of sleep are depression, memory loss, migraines, weight gain, and paranoia. Thinking about turning in early tonight? Resolution 4: Stay active! It’s a given that physical activity offers countless benefits, so why are 60 percent of all Americans couch potatoes? You don’t have to be a world champion athlete, but for goodness sake get up and do something! Regular exercise (anaerobic weight training and aerobic cardio training) helps control weight, maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints,

and reduces the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes (and death) from heart disease. And yes, exercise is the only way you’re going to get a tight, toned body. Resolution 5: Protect your skin. Your skin begins to age the moment you are born, so the best way to protect it and keep it (and you) look younger is to limit your exposure and time in the sun. In order to avoid some of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays—which cause wrinkles and skin cancer—remember to always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, wear a hat and other protective clothing, avoid deliberately sun-bathing, and avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Resolution 6: Keep a positive outlook and be open to life. Mean, cynical, negative people seem to gravitate toward one another. Negativity breeds more negativity. Like Superman, use your energy and powers to do good. Channel your frustrations into your workouts. Volunteer for a worthwhile cause. Look forward to all that life has in store for you. Be grateful for all that you’ve been given and shut the hell up about what you cannot change. Have a happy and fit 2013!

Travel

The Top 5 Places to Spend New Year’s Eve Start 2013 with a New Perspective By Robert Elias Deaton

o

Given that we live in South Florida, which is, after all, one of the hottest travel destinations in the world, it’s hard to fathom how to best the best. However, if jumping on a plane and spending the night in another city is the kind of Auld Lang Syne you crave, we’ve got some excellent suggestions to begin your 2013 with wonderment. Siem Reap, Cambodia may sound like a strange choice for a celebration, but where better to transform into your new you than among the Temples of Angkor? For a crisp $10, you Angkor Wat can book your own tuk-tuk and driver to escort you around town for the evening and the morning after. Sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight, make your way over to Club Linga (across from the One Hotel in the Old Market area) where Indiana native Martin Dishman will be holding court, complete with noise makers and silly hats. Martin owns the gay joint, which is cool enough in itself, but made all the more essential when transitioning into New Year. While the famed Angkor Wat temple gets most of the sunrise crowd, we suggest pointing your tuk-tuk driver in the direction of nearby Preah Khan, where the battle of jungle against crumbling stone ruins is enough to raise any Phoenix. For sheer noise and excitement, it’s hard to beat Madrid, Spain with its six day, six event WE Party New Year Festival. The event begins on December 27 at Sala Boite (Plaza del Carmen), and culminates on January 1 at La Riviera Club (Virgen del Puerto). In between you’re expected to squeeze in Noche Vieja at Sala But (Barceló 11). No, you can’t sleep. Tel Aviv, Israel has it all together every night of the year, with New Year’s Eve being no exception. The place to be is the Theater Club (10 Jerusalem Blvd, Jaffa, about 15 minutes from Tel Aviv center) for the Big Boys Party where you have to be over 29 to gain admittance. How’s that for a switch? Expect to see lots of well-trained, muscular Israeli army soldiers dancing to some Eurovision hits and

plenty of American beats. Fantasy? Reality? It’s hard to tell in Tel Aviv, otherwise known as the Holy Land. Sydney, Australia knows how to throw a party and on New Year’s Eve, they turn night into day with a fireworks display over the famed Sydney Harbor that is both electrifying and inspiring with its musical accompaniment. There are many public venues to “watch the works,” but our favorite is from Luna Park (1 Olympic Dr., Milsons Point). There’s multiple full-service bars in this outdoor amusement park setting on the water, and VIP tickets are available, which includes the most valuable commodity of all—private and clean restrooms! Cinque Terre, Sentiero Azzurro, Riomaggiore, Italy. Because we’re all romantics at heart—yes, even YOU—we saved the best for last. While anywhere in Italy is always special, the Sentiero Azzurro is a walking trail that links five incredibly romantic villages, the Cinque Terre, located on the cliffs above the Italian Riviera. Travel from Riomaggiore on the Via dell’Amore to Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and end on the beaches of Monterosso. You’ll see terraced hills, vineyards and olive trees along the way and an incredible coastline in a hike that takes five hours. On New Years Eve in Monterosso, cast your eyes upward and see a sky full of more stars than you thought possible. Then make a wish. 2013 is here.
