ne of the legendary figures in South Florida’s club scene is Victor Zepka, owner of the Boardwalk Bar. Looking back from the “vantage point” of 1984, who would have thought that what started as a piano bar in Sunny Isles would become one of the world’s most famous male strip nightclubs? Zepka found the location quite by accident, and at a time when there were far fewer gay bars in town. “At that time there was a club called 13 Buttons, and the old Seagull Resort,” notes Zepka. “You would never walk down Lincoln Road after 6:00 p.m. There were no safe places and no lighted parking lots at the time,” he adds. At this point, the bar was far from the success it would achieve—or the theme it would adopt. “It was ‘okay’ business-wise,” explains Zepka about the bar’s early days, “but I just knew that there was much more that I had expected.” The club had yet to take on the trappings that would make it famous. “Then one day a customer said, ‘Gee I wish there was a club around that featured male dancers,’” Zepka remembers. “I started out with one dancer, who would come out between sets of the piano player, and then I added another and another and, finally, it was one of those things that happened on a lark, and the rest as they say is ‘history,’” Zepka says with a laugh. Although he was enjoying the successes of owning a popular spot, the true impact of it had yet to hit. That was soon to change. “After the business really took off, I went to Amsterdam, as the boyfriend wanted to try marijuana legally. While we were there at a local bar, the bartender and two of the patrons asked where we lived,” says Zepka. “We

told them ‘Miami,’ and after a second, they asked ‘Have you heard of a place called the Boardwalk?’ It was really quite flattering,” he admits. “Can you imagine that in South Florida we get five million tourists a year, and Las Vegas gets 53 million a year? We are so fortunate to have the kind of quality people who visit, and Boardwalk is fortunate to have the staff and the boys who work for us,” he says. Just after the turn of the millennium, Zepka relocated the business from Sunny Isles to its present location in Greater Fort Lauderdale. “It is hard to believe that we have now been here in the new location for 10 years,” says Zepka. Along the way, he acquired a new business partner in the person of Jim Kolkana, who himself boasts a highly successful history as an entrepreneur. The Boardwalk continues to grow: In their current location, Zepka and Kolkana have partnered with longtime community member and restaurateur Vicky Bennett to open the very popular Beefcakes Restaurant. Zepka is grateful for his success, and for the ongoing community support. “At this point we don’t have to recruit people, they actually seek us out. One of the things that we really promote is that we are gay owned and operated. We support gay-owned businesses and hope that they return the support, and not just to us.” Zepka tries to maintain a generous personal outlook on business. “Sean David, the owner of Johnny’s [a competing men’s strip nightclub], is a former business partner here at Boardwalk. I love him, as he is a gay man and I want people to support him and his business,” says Zepka, with the mark of a true gentleman.

was finally able to escape the chains that tied her exclusively to Diddy, and venture out on her solo career. Her “big break” began in 2005 when she auditioned for MTV’s “Making the Band 3” in Orlando. She beat out stiff competition to secure her spot in the band Danity Kane, alongside “Celebrity Apprentice” star Aubrey O’Day. They became the first female group in BILLBOARD HISTORY to debut their first two albums at the top of the charts. After the band dismembered in 2009, Dawn joined forces with Diddy himself, to form the group Diddy-Dirty Money. I have seen this person in action and I can definitely tell you his shows are RED HOT! DJ MAXIMUS: Where are you from and where is your base? I am originally from Gary, Indiana (“Murder Capital of the World” and Home of the Most Dysfunctional Famous AfricanAmerican Families in the Business — next to the Braxton’s of course). I now dwell in Tampa, Florida, but the world is my stage. DJ MAXIMUS: You have an amazing look and presence. What would you say your influences are? Well, thank you. Most of my influences are music, fashion, and art. I get a lot of inspiration from artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Janet Jackson, Grace Jones, Sylvester and anyone or thing willing to go against the grain of what society deems as acceptable. Another one of my favorite influential artists is Salvador Dali. He is a visual, creative orgasm. After going through his life’s work, you might have a hangover the next day — and the munchies. DJ MAXIMUS: You work as an entertainer performing at clubs. Would you identify as a Drag Persona, Club kid, both, or your own special brand? Well, the saying goes, “You’re born naked and the rest is drag.” However, I just consider myself a performance artist or entertainer. I don’t consider myself a Drag Queen simply because I’m not a female illusionist and I’m sure you’ve never seen a female look quite like myself. If so….I want

Yes, I design everything from the headpieces to the outfits as high fashion plays a considerable role in everything I do. I believe as an artist, your image is just as important as your sound. I often love to use unconventional fabrics, materials, and pieces. Home Depot and Auto Zone is like going into Neiman Marcus and Saks for me. DJ MAXIMUS: Do you design stuff for other people? I often get asked to and I would ultimately love to have a clothing line someday. I have styled a few people quite a few times. Every now and again, a brave soul will ask me how I make my head pieces. But you know a good magician never reveals his secrets. DJ MAXIMUS: Craziest backstage experience? Darling, in the almost 12 years I’ve been bumping these pumps to the beat, my “craziest experience file” could incriminate a fortress of folks. I would hate to have to bring anyone down with me. But…. I will say there is nothing more completely liberating than stripping completely naked in front of thousands while all eyes are on you. DJ MAXIMUS: You recently crossed over with your first single “It’s Hot” as a vocalist. How did that process work for you, and how did the project come to life? Well, so far this new step into becoming a recording artist has been filled with much emotion. I feel like I’m starting over on a completely new level. So with that comes happiness, anxiety, ambition and a new sense of artistic freedom. My focus is always to inspire

others to tap into their own individuality no matter what society says. Be who you are, love who you are, and reach for the stars, and that is what it feels like to make that step. Knowing that I have the power to not only influence through performance, but through my songs and lyrics. DJ MAXIMUS: Any future projects in the works? In addition to performing at circuit parties and club events everywhere, writing and making my own music has taken center stage. DJ MAXIMUS: Into what other areas of the arts are you looking to cross over? Any other skills you’re currently working on at the moment? As I stated before, I would love to start a fashion line. I am so inspired by designers like Theirry Mugler, Alexander McQueen (RIP), and John Galliano (despite his anti-semetic statements, there is NO denying he is a genius). DJ MAXIMUS: Where can we see you perform next? Residencies? It seems as though lately I have more spots than a Dalmation. This a very good thing! You can find me at Gbar in Tampa , Revolution in Orlando on Thursday’s at its Back Door Bumby, and every Sunday as the host at Hamburger Mary’s in Tampa for Sunday Funday. f you can, name one thing that screams “self-indulgence” as much as the idea of sleeping late on Sunday followed by a delicious brunch. (You can’t, can you?) The most decadent of meal ideas, it includes foods that are common to both breakfast and lunch, and even comes with a built-in grant of permission to tipple before the noon hour (okay, 11:30 a.m. is pushing it, but still). At once casual yet elegant, it is suited to a front porch picnic as much as it is to a dining room sit-down meal. There are many ways that you can serve a brunch (“throw” may be a better description), including an intimate meal-for-two, or go all out and give some of the Gayborhood’s restaurants a run for their money. Your menu should include a variety of tasty eats. Because this is “part breakfast-part lunch,” make sure you include some fruits, sliced tomatoes and other “brunchy” veggies, and maybe some different yogurts and granola, as well as muffins and rolls. We are going for luxury, not labor, so make sure the foods are both plentiful and easy to prepare (remember, you want a lot of selections). This means Eggs Benedict and quiche are in, but individual omelets are out. Remember, too, that unless you are planning a sit-down meal, servings will very likely be balanced upon the laps of your guests, so plan dishes accordingly. Waffles and French toast are easier to cut in this situation than a t-bone steak. This being brunch, you will want to offer Mimosas (champagne and orange juice) and Bloody Marys, in addition to coffee, juice, and soft drinks. Food, Glorious Food! Hopefully, you have a pretty good handle on the more “mundane” brunch foods (eggs, bagels, cereal, etc.), but try some of these delicious menu ideas on for size:

Huevos Rancheros 1 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 clove(s) garlic, crushed with press 1 tablespoon(s) chipotle sauce or other hot sauce, plus additional for serving 1 teaspoon(s) ground cumin 1 can (28-ounce) tomatoes in juice, drained and chopped 1 can (15- to 19-ounce) black beans, rinsed and drained

• In 4-quart saucepan, heat oil on medium until hot. Add onion and garlic, and cook 8 minutes or until beginning to brown. Stir in chipotle sauce and cumin; cook 30 seconds, stirring. Add tomatoes; cover and cook 3 minutes to blend flavors, stirring occasionally. Stir in beans, half of cilantro, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; heat through, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. • Meanwhile, in 12-inch nonstick skillet, melt margarine on medium. Crack eggs, 1 at a time, and drop into skillet. Cover skillet and cook eggs 4 to 5 minutes or until whites are set and yolks thicken.

on’t tell the tourists: South Florida locals already know that some nights are busier than others (well, duh!). The same cannot be said of Miami-Dade and Broward’s gay Happy Hours, where friends and familiar faces blend with the out-of-town set to form a perfect blend of postwork and pre-night-out. To accommodate the multiple “crowds” (Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers, as well as Rat Packers and Brat Packers) that descend their watering holes, from South Beach to North Andrews Avenue, local saloonkeepers and restaurateurs have set up a clock-work timetable to keep the most budget-conscious, driest boy or girl well-lubricated (in Happy Hour libations, at any rate). Our tour of Happy Hours starts in Broward’s Gayborhood, Wilton Manors. At Tropics (2000 Wilton Drive), Happy Hour starts at 4 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drinks are two-for-theprice-of-one (hereinafter, 2-4-1), which—in keeping with Gayborhood tradition--involves paying for a round all at once, and getting a chip for your second drink. In this case, that chip can be used at any time, even during the wee small hours when drinks are full pop. Across the way is Sidelines Sports Bar (2031-A Wilton Drive), “where sports come first” and where Happy Hour runs daily—for the first time!—from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with half-price drinks (the other popular Gayborhood-variation on the split-level-drink-price), followed by a back-half Happy Hour from Midnightto-close, also with (according to their Web site) half-

On the south side of the Gayborhood, where Wilton Drive turns into NE 4th Ave., you will find Fort Lauderdale’s oldest gay bar under the same ownership, Ramrod (1508 NE 4th Ave., Fort Lauderdale), a leather, Levis, and uniform bar with hot men and a 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily 2-4-1 Happy Hour (weekends included!). he sign says “Greek Diner Gyros and Subs” in giant white letters against a blue background. Only upon careful examination do the words “Victoria Park” sneak into view. This restaurant, a onetime Miami Subs franchise, is a local favorite, and while the signage is new, the menu is a tried-and-true mix of diner classics and Greek staples. Olga Nikolaidis owns the joint with her family, and serves up some surprisingly good alternatives to fastfood fare. Our favorite here is an amazing Moussaka ($9.29), which in any other world would be called an eggplant casserole. It is a blend of seasoned ground beef and potatoes that do an adagio dance with sliced eggplant, topped with a Béchamel sauce. If you’re in the mood for a chicken dish, the Chicken Athenian ($12.79) is certain to please. It’s a baked breast that is stuffed to overflowing with spinach and feta cheese, and served with a Greek salad and potatoes. Moist and Mediterranean fresh. The idea of eating a grape leaf may not appeal to some, but when it’s wrapped around a Dolmathes ($4.49), any hesitation you may feel should disappear instantly. These meat, onion and rice rolls come six to a serving and can easily be a main course if you’re in the mood for a dish that is both light and filling. Spanikopita is a Greek classic against which all other dishes are compared. In the version prepared here, the phyllo pastry is crisp and flakey, accented with spinach and feta, and served in a portion sized to feed the troops. Order it in combo with a Greek salad ($8.49) or on its own ($6.49) as a side dish. Either way—nostimos. The traditional Gyro (pronounced “yee-ro” to the uninitiated) ($7.49) is a compressed mix of beef and lamb that is cooked on a vertical rotisserie and sliced

onto pita bread. The taste difference at the Victoria Park Greek Diner is in the Tzatziki sauce—a blend of sour cream and cucumber that is whipped with garlic, dill and olive oil—that tops the Gyro sandwich. It’s sloppy and juicy—a four-napkin dish to be sure. And you’ll be happier because of it. The diner also serves a version with buffalo hot sauce called a Gyro Kaftero ($7.49). Both versions are served with crisp fries. Like diners worldwide, the Victoria Park Greek serves traditional (and not-so-traditional) breakfasts all day long. For $9.79, combine the Spanikopita, Gyro and two eggs—not cheap but a hearty plate that serves as breakfast and lunch. The omelette menu includes plain ($4.59), Western—with ham, green peppers, onion and cheese ($6.29), Athos—feta and spinach ($6.29), Meat Lovers—sausage, bacon, ham, onion, green peppers and cheese ($7.59), Doliana—spinach, feta, onion and tomato ($7.29) and the Koromilia—spinach, feta, tomato and sausage ($7.29) or any combination you can concoct. The plates are all heaped with hash browns or home fries and served with toast or grits (well, this is the South). The Victoria Park Greek Diner is open daily at 6:30 a.m. for the early birds (7 a.m. on Sundays), and stays hopping through 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Service can be a bit on the haphazard side with the gossip at the front register often too tempting to resist. It’s a family affair, after all. However, the food more than makes up for any service gaffs. The place is not only gay-friendly, they donate a portion of the daily till to HIV Research and Care. Sweet (and appreciated). Let the Games Begin: Apps to Stay Home For

n the past, we talked about the manufacturers of classic toys and games who are getting in on the digital act and releasing brands that are almost as old as Rock, Paper, Scissors (BYTES, March 8, 2012: “To Separate the Men from the Boys, ask ‘How Digital are Their Toys?’”). As toy companies have already figured out, iPads and other tablets are excellent platforms to reintroduce traditional games with a combination of old familiar staples (games boards, etc.) and new tech. Designer Discovery Bay Games, which manufactures iPad accessories and apps along with puzzles and games, has introduced Duo Pop, an analog iPad add-on equipped with four “poppers:” handheld devices which send their signals via a controller that relays them to the iPad without the need for USB cables or wires. Duo Pop has six downloadable games available at the App Store: Got It, Guesstimation, Highlights Buzz Blast, Highlights Hidden Pictures Countdown, New York Times Swoop, and Saturday Night Live: The Game. Two of these take their themes (and content) from perennial Highlights magazine, three (Got It, Guesstimation, and SNL: The Game) are trivia-based challenges, and Swoop is a word game. For the trivia games, the handheld poppers evoke the clickers used by game show contestants, and in keeping with that tradition, the player who buzzes in fastest with the answer wins that round. On the downside, although the poppers work great with the controller when aimed from a few feet away, you must still lean in close to the iPad in order to read the screen. Requiring no cords to plug in is a convenience—but be sure to have enough AAA batteries on hand (11 of them, to be precise). New York Times Swoop and the Highlights entries can be played just fine without the poppers, using the iPad’s touch screen. The game apps are for two to four players, or teams, and are recommended for all ages. The Duo Pop sells for around $40. There is no charge for the apps themselves, but some of them offer extra content only available via in-app

purchase—a cagey way to charge for something that’s “free.” The Duo Pop’s portability makes it suitable for taking on road trips, to the beach, or anywhere. Just remember to bring the batteries. Got Style? Get “The Collection” There are times when the fashionista in my house, Proculus, needs an on-the-go Style fix. The Collection is an iPad app from The New York Times, which brings all the fashion and style coverage of the “Newspaper of Record” to your fingertips. Culling style and fashion news and other content from the publishing giant’s brands— including The New York Times, Styles, T Magazine,

and The International Herald Tribune and The Times’ fashion blogs—The Collection is ground zero for all things fashion, including exclusive coverage available only for app users. In addition, app users receive updates from across the fashion industry, behind-the-scenes interviews, photos taken within inches of the runways in New York, Paris, London, and Milan, shopping videos, fashion reviews from Times writers Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes, hot new product offerings, the latest in beauty and cosmetic trends, and a slew of other content, as well as the ability to seamlessly share favorite articles, videos, and slide shows via Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail. he Canary Islands sit off the coast of Northwest Africa some 60 miles from Morocco but, otherwise, a world away. The Spanish archipelago is composed of seven major islands, all watched over by its own patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria, who has her hands full—particularly in Playa del Inglés, the largest resort town in the group. Here, being gay is not only accepted, it’s expected. Let me explain. All of the Canaries, as the islands are collectively known, have a live-and-let-live lifestyle that manifests itself in a joy so contagious that straights, gays, transsexuals, and bipolars rub hips, lock lips and otherwise enjoy each other’s company without the slightest hint of judgment. Playa del Inglés on Gran Canaria (the second most populated of the islands) takes carpe diem to the extreme with a nude beach and sand dunes to frolic by day, and a 200 store/bar shopping mall called the Yumbo Centrum to get naughty by night.

But first things, first. You get to the Canary Islands via flights to Las Palmas Airport (LPA). From the airport, known locally as Gando, you can catch a cab to Playa del Ingles for 35 euros, or take the five euros #66 public bus if money is tight. Either way, it’s a short 20-minute trip.

The Riu Palace Maspalomas Hotel (Avenida Tirajana, Plaza Fuerteventura) is always a good choice for a place to stay. It’s the closest hotel to the sand dunes and the gay beach (located near beach stand #7)—just follow the pack of boys in thongs. It’s a ten minute walk to Yumbo Centrum (Avenida de Espana), a four-story tourist trap of stores and restaurants during the day that turns into a gay mecca at night. After 10 p.m., the bars take control of the place, with each trying to outdo the other with music and drink specials, backrooms and black lights. The dress code in the evening is, well, minimum—as in, the less you have on the better. Nearly all the gay bars at Yumbo are clothing optional. The only item required is footwear, which should tell you something. You can float from bar to bar, wearing only your underwear, which is about as carpe diem as you can get. Most clubs charge five euros cover, which includes a free drink. At The Cellar, on the ground floor, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays are Underwear night (that’s the maximum you can wear), Thursday night you’ll find Naked in the Dark (no explanations needed), Saturday is Jock Strap night while Sunday is Shoes Only. The Cellar knows how to throw a party. On the first floor, Cruise Bar is the oldest gay club in town. Its theme is leather, the mood is dark, and the place is packed until 6 a.m., so they must be doing something right. Upstairs on the fourth floor is Club Mykonos, with an enormous dance floor, and a motto that reads “If You’re Not Having Sex, See One of Our Staff for Assistance.” Think of it as Greek by way of Spain, Canary style. The local Gay Pride runs from May 7 through 12. There’s a traditional parade on the final day running smack through the middle of town on the Avenida Tirajana. This year’s theme is Countries of the World, so you’ll fit right in even if you Amsterdam Hotel de L’Europe call Florida home. The entire event climaxes at the Yumbo Centrum (where else?) and it’s a 24/7 type of party—not unlike the Canary Islands itself. And remember, the Virgin of Candelaria has your back.

Exhibit Summers in SoBe “Definitive Collection” of Pioneering Homoerotic Artist at WORLD EROTIC ART MUSEUM thru July 31

he essential works of one of modern art’s most iconic figures will be on display from April 14-July 31, as Naomi Wilzig’s World Erotic Art Museum (1205 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) presents TOM OF FINLAND: MALE MASTERWORKS, a major exhibit that will focus on artwork that had a profound impact and transforming influence upon gay culture. The extraordinary homoerotic drawings of Tom of Finland—who was born Touko Laaksone in 1920 in Kaarina, Finland, challenged oppressive stereotypes of gay men, depicting them at ease and at play. Called by cultural historian Joseph W. Slade the “most influential creator of gay pornographic images,” Finland, who died in 1991, produced more than 3,500 illustrations. By depicting masculine men enjoying their sexuality free of shame, Tom of Finland had a major impact on global culture and attitudes towards LGBT persons. Opening on the weekend of Miami Beach Gay Pride, the exhibit will feature art collector Volker Morlock, who has been involved with the Tom of Finland Foundation since 1991, as guest speaker on the opening night. The editor of the anthology “Tom of Finland Retrospective 111” and consultant for Taschen Publishing on the books “Quaintance” and “Tom of

Finland XXL,” Morlock has curated the exhibit’s original artwork which illustrates the development of Finland’s techniques and subject matter through five decades of his prolific work. Raised in the rough and wild farm country of Finland, Touko was drawn to the muscular frontiersmen of his youthful home who became the inspiration for his drawings. After his military service during World War II, he was urged by colleagues to submit his drawings to the American body building magazine Physique Pictorial. The 1957 cover story of a laughing lumberjack became a sensation, and established the name “Tom of Finland.” In 1979, Finland founded the Tom of Finland Company with his friend Durk Dehner, owner of several paintings which will also be on view during the exhibit. In 1984, the non-profit Tom of Finland Foundation was formed as an educational archive to preserve, restore, and exhibit erotic art. For sheer homoeroticism, the finely detailed body of work that Tom of Finland left will never be surpassed. Tickets for the exhibit are $15, and no one under 18 years old will be admitted. cean Drive’s first and only gay bar will be the scene this Sunday for the South Florida performance of dance singer/songwriter Maya Simantov. During the Official Miami Beach Gay Pride Block Party, Maya—direct from Tel Aviv—will perform her most famous hits remixed by world famous DJ/ producer Offer Nissim. The singer will be featured on the Latin Stage, one of two entertainmentpacked platforms positioned outside of the landmark restaurant. Starting at the age of two, Maya had dreams of becoming a singer. Born and raised in Tel-Aviv, she was inspired by the music of Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, and Whitney Houston, among others. Maya’s debut dance album, “First Time,” became one of Israel’s all-time best dance albums before it was released internationally by Star69 Records owner and producer Peter Rauhofer. May’s talents as a singer, songwriter, lyricist, and composer have been finely-honed over the last decade. In 2002, Maya teamed with Israeli producer Yinon Yahel and recording artist, producer, and DJ Offer Nissim. The trio worked together and achieved major success. Maya’s work caught the attention of several internationally known DJs, producers, and music label executives, including Grammy Awardwinning producer Rauhofer. The year 2005 Maya brought international fame to Maya & Company, with the release of numerous chart-toppers, including the Billboard Top 25 hit “Searching.” In addition, “First Time” reached Number 10 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play

Reach Your Peak Physique By Summertime!

t’s easy to skip the gym and make lame excuses about being too tired or too busy to get up off your glutes and lose weight and tone up. But unless you prefer living under a rock, you’ve got to see that the summer sizzle is nearly upon us and everywhere guys are looking leaner and hotter than ever. If you’re going to make the grade, you’ve got to have a plan. Plus you should never play the procrastination game when it comes to living a healthier happier life.

Here’s a few training strategies that will pump new vitality into your training regime and help you to spring into a new season of sun and fun in South Florida. Shake up your routine and shock those muscle fibers into growing bigger – now! If you are bored with your same old weight training and cardio routines, chances are so are your muscles…and when they’re bored they refuse to grow bigger and stronger. Never rely on only one type of free weight equipment or cardio station during a workout. In every workout, combine dumbbells, barbells and cables. Your muscles need a variety of forms and movements in order to be challenged, breakdown and grow. For example, when blasting chest, you may want to do barbell flat bench presses, dumbbell incline presses and cable crossovers. As far as cardio goes, begin with a recumbent bike, switch to a Precor and try out the stair stepper when you are bold enough. Calculate your target heart rate and work your way into the fat burning zone and keep it there for 20 minutes or so.

Often when my schedule is very busy, I like to workout twice a day. “What’s that?” you say! Sometimes in the morning I may have only half an hour between clients. That’s a sufficient time for a pretty decent workout especially if you want to target one muscle group or do a dynamite cardio routine. Later in the day when time allows work another muscle group or do some more cardio for 20 minutes or so. Be consistent with your workouts and keep track of what you do and when you do it. Stretching your muscles is great for injury prevention and it can actually help you build muscle. Like any muscle movement, stretching helps in its own way to break down stubborn muscle fiber, prevent the build up of painful adhesions, and build new muscle. Remember to stretch and tightly flex after each set of exercises the muscle group you have just worked. Light overall stretching session before and after your workout, is a must. Turn the heat up on your cardio by adding a burst of power and speed at brief intervals. This is basically what interval training is all about. If you’re on a treadmill or Precor, for example, this will mean bumping up to a minute of intense activity at a higher speed every 10 minutes or so according to your ability. These high intensity intervals interspersed into your already challenging routine will help you reach a higher level of cardiovascular fitness. As with any form of hard work, it is good to reward yourself as you see progress happening. Therefore, go shopping! Replace those tired, baggy, sweat stained, workout clothes with gear that shows off that body of yours. Make the most of your workouts. It precedes the most profound questions, like “what r u into?” and “u clean?”—questions unsuitable for anything but the blind safety of a phone app, yet somehow better conceived than that amateurish “a/s/l?” crap of yesterday. Welcome to Web X.O, Sexualized Social Media, where we move our shyness and introversion beyond the mere social and into the shadowy corners of our darkest fantasies. Far from being a new techno trend, hearing a tri-tone and thinking “SEX!” started for some of us in the infancy of popularized cyberspace with, as I recall, AOL 3.0. It was that second, “fun” screen-name you hid from your family and friends which you used for plundering the corridors of the Man4Man chat rooms. Through this Secret Identity, you explored a side of yourself that you kept otherwise hidden beside your bed: inside a bottle of Jergens, with some spit for extra support. “You’ve Got Mail,” the invisible AOL man acknowledged. And you knew what it was: an offer to enlarge your penis, or a dirty picture from someone called “RichardStroker78.” And as you played in your mailbox, the AOL tri-tone rang and an Instant Message commanded your attention with something shocking (were it to be said out loud), but because it was accompanied by that chipper little ring, it felt okay. Here we played our dirty games behind virtual walls, separated by hundreds of miles and the notion that actually meeting someone from the Internet was NOT alright. The Internet harbored murderers, after all: best not to actually meet them. Chatting with them and piquing their interest in obscene and extreme ways was a much safer bet.

Years later, Web 2.0 strolled in, bringing with it a new dimension of faceless interaction: this time, with our REAL friends, and with people we REALLY might want to meet. We were growing up, and our introversion matured. The coming-of-age of the sexual Web took our conversations to a new level (much to the disappointment of our formerly sex-centric avatars). This passage introduced us to a terrifying new species: Gays Who Don’t Use Social Media to Hook Up. Cue the scary music. “Never fear!” said the software developers. “We’ll carve out a place where the sexually-starved can go to get their fill.” Voila! Grindr and its offspring were born. But with the ubiquity of these apps came a tidal wave of those OTHER conversations on Grindr, the ones that drove people to download the beast in the first place. Profiles cropped up scrawled with descriptions like “No Hookups” and “Looking for LTR.” Which brings us to now. We live in a world where nomadic cyber-sexuals will always find their niche, and in which the “friends only” crowd will follow. It’s polarizing. I hear Grindarians complaining all the time about those pesky profiles. “It’s a hook-up app,” they complain: “Go to Facebook if you want friends.” I happen to be one of the “friends-only” members and in our defense it’s really just because we like teasing you. That or maybe—just maybe—it’s okay to have both.
