LGBT Icon Cyndi Lauper Still Having Fun After All These Years Cyndi Lauper has had quite the year. Her revelatory autobiography Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir was a New York Times bestseller. In June 2013 she won a Tony Award for Kinky Boots, her musical adaptation (with Harvey Fierstein) of the movie of the same name. Lauper also returned to the dance charts with her rendition of “Sex Is In The Heel” from Kinky Boots. Never one to rest on her laurels, Lauper is currently on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of her groundbreaking 1983 album She’s So Unusual. With no plans to take a break from her boundless activist and charity work, Lauper hosts and performs at the third annual “Cyndi
Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays” benefit concert, Dec. 7, at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The show, which helps to raise awareness about homelessness in the LGBT youth community and funds for the Forty to None Project, also features performances by P!nk, Josh Groban, Susan Sarandon, Nelly Furtado, the Indigo Girls, Rosie O’Donnell, Ingrid Michaelson, Matt & Kim, Carson Kressley and others. Madonna may talk the talk, but Cyndi Lauper has ALWAYS walked the walk. Guy Magazine: Six years after you launched the first True Colors tour, the True Colors Fund is still going strong with the third annual “Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays” benefit concert, scheduled for Dec. 7, 2013 in New York. What does the success of True Colors Fund mean to you? When we started the True Colors Fund five years ago to continue the work of the True Colors Tour, I never imagined we would get this far in such a short period of time. Major milestones being the launch of the Give a Damn Campaign in 2010 and the Forty to None Project last year. The Give a Damn Campaign has provided a unique voice to inspire everyone, especially straight people, involved in moving equality forward for all. The Forty to None Project has filled a significant void as the first and only national organization solely dedicated to ending gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth homelessness. The fact that we have been able to help provide these young people a voice, especially in Washington DC, is something I am particularly proud of. This is a fixable problem, we can bring the number of homeless youth who are gay or transgender from 40 percent to none, we just need to work together. The Matthew Shepard Foundation was an early beneficiary of the True Colors Fund. We recently marked the 15th anniversary of

Matthew’s passing. Have you remained in contact with Judy and Dennis Shepard and were you able to speak to them at that time? I continue to be in awe of what Judy and Dennis have accomplished over the past 15 years. The choice they made to start the Matthew Shepard Foundation and to share Matthew’s and their story has helped transform the world in such a positive way that I do not think we can really understand the full impact of their work. Sharing one’s story, especially in the face of hatred and bigotry, is one of the most courageous things a person can do in life. Judy and Dennis have inspired so many people through their example to share their stories and the impact of that sort of change is immeasurable. The True Colors tours and subsequent benefit shows have always had a fascinating array of performers, both LGBT and straight. What is involved in your process for selecting musical guests? Pretty simple really. We approach artists that have always shown to be supportive of human rights issues. We also go after artists that we know will put on an amazing show and this year is going to be great! We have P!nk, who I love, and [who is] a strong supporter of LGBT rights. We also have Josh Grobin, Matt & Kim, Rosie O’Donnell, Carson Kressley, The Hives, Ingrid Michaelson, and Indigo Girls who have always been a favorite of mine, who have supported True Colors Fund since I started it. The line-up for this year’s “Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays” benefit concert is no exception. How, for example, did actress Susan Sarandon and musical duo Matt & Kim come to be involved. I have known Susan Sarandon for a long time. [She’s] someone that I have admired for a long time. She has always been an outspoken supporter of the gay community. Matt & Kim are friends of mine. My manager and their manager are friends so we met a while back. But I was a fan of their music even before I met them. They are really nice kids. You recorded the song True Colors almost 30 years ago, and it is a song that has taken on a life of its own, for you and for others. When I recorded that song, I had a friend (named Gregory) dying from AIDS. When he got really sick, he said, “Hey, write a song for me so I am not forgotten.” Then this song was brought to me. I didn’t write it. Billy Steinberger and Tom Kelly wrote it, but when they brought me the song, I just wanted to sing it for my friend who had been told most of his life he was no good just because he was gay. He was thrown out of his home for being gay. I just wanted to let him know that he was perfect the way he was. I sang the song for him but then it took on a life of its own and I’m very proud that it has become so important to the community and guymag.net
that it connected the way it did. I remember seeing your altruistic nature for the first time when you sang on and appeared in the video for USA for Africa’s We Are The World. What role does giving back to others play in your life – both personally and professionally? You always have to try and be the best friend, mother and wife you can be. I am far from perfect, but I do try. I fail a lot; but I do try and be there for those in my life. Professionally, I think that having success you should pay back, use the fame you achieve to give voice to some that don’t have a voice. [It’s] just the right thing to do. I recently saw Margaret Cho, who performed in one of the True Colors tours, in concert. She did an affectionate and spot-on imitation of you. Have you ever heard her do it and, if so, what do you think of it? [Laughs] I have and it’s hysterical! Margaret is a great comedian. Do you, by chance, do an imitation of Margaret? I don’t. I’m not very good at that type of thing, but I do adore her. In addition to your philanthropy and your music, you are also the Tony Award-winning composer for the musical Kinky Boots. What does it mean to you to be the first woman to win a Best Score Tony (solo)? I am proud and humbled. To find such acceptance by the Broadway community is an honor. You also became a best-selling author with the publication of your 2012 memoir. What was the experience of writing your memoir like for you? It was very therapeutic, to be honest. It was great to go back to the beginning of my journey and what brought me here today; both personally and professionally I tried to be as honest as possible because if you are going to share your story you owe it to your fans that buy the book. Finally, you are on tour commemorating the 30th anniversary of your solo debut album She’s So Unusual. What does that album mean to you, 30 years after its release? It has been an amazing 30 year journey. The fact that this album is still loved by my fans after all this time means a lot to me. I never would have imagined back then that 30 years later we would be celebrating its release. Wow [laughs]! I am a lucky woman and [as] excited about my career now as I was 30 years ago. Cyndi Lauper performs on Nov. 9 in Hollywood at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

THE WEEK
Cyndi Lauper, Brian McKnight and Tracy Morgan

“El Beso en la Telarana” oFort Lauderdale has always been the “anglogay” side of Miami, but that doesn’t man there isn’t a rich appreciation of Hispanic heritage. With the new premiere of “El Beso en la Telarana” Fort Lauderdale bridges that gap further by creating a play entirely in Spanish. Written by acclaimed Argentinian writer Manuel Puig, “El Beso en la Telarana” may be better known as its film and musical incarnation Kiss of the Spiderwoman. The play revolves around the contrasting passions of two imprisoned men: the rebellious, dangerous Valentin and the effeminate, empathetic Molina. As Valentin grows angrier and more stifled by his imprisonment and the politically unstable Argentina of the time, Molina escapes further into the fantasy world of his flamboyant mind. At some point, these two disparate personalities forge a bond, and the men fall for each other. The play , which runs until November 16 and contains full nudity. Please be advised that this show is intended for an adult-only audience. For more information, visit classccreations.com. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW 5th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.
Brian MckNight oAnd from the offensive to the, well, offensive in its inoffensiveness. Brian McKnight, God of the romance-me-to-bed set, brings his R&B soulful love songs to the Hard Rock Live, ready to serenade a few bitter women and engagement-ring-looking gay men. A Seventh-Day Adventist, Brian McKnight has had an illustrious career spanning more than a decade of both music-making and failed talk-show creating. The Brian McKnight Show in 2009 somehow never found an audience and was canceled. Persuade your boyfriend to take you to the Hard Rock tonight, and maybe a bubble bath, some champagne, and a ring await you at home. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Tracy Morgan oHalloween may be over, but there is still time to attend a Werewolf Bar-Mitzvah. Tracy Morgan, better known as his alter-ego Tracy Jordan from the now defunct 30 Rock, will be performing at the Magic City Casino his signature half-vapid, halfoffensive stand-up routine. Things might get messy, as has been known for the comedian at other gigs, including April of this year when an expletive-ridden show tanked during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Over 50 people walked out of that show, muttering how the act was “truly awful” and “disgusting”. Two years ago, a show at Caroline’s in New York City contained a rant persuading the audience, “Don’t ever mess with women who have retarded kids.” Subsequently, various organizations complained. Let’s hope this show will be just as controversial. 8:30 p.m. Magic City Casino. 450 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33125. THE WEEK continues on page 37 guymag.net

Cyndi Lauper oAbout a decade ago, at the Coliseum Fort Lauderdale, Cyndi Lauper arrived on stage draped in an American flag—as her hit song “True Colors” continued, the American flag slowly fell, revealing a rainbow flag, and thus, Cyndi Lauper’s legendary status in the Fort Lauderdale gay lexicon was established. Since then, Cyndi has actively worked for gay rights charities on both Celebrity Apprentice and on tour a couple summers ago. She has become one of the foremost gay rights leaders— both an icon and a saint to many in the community. Her music career is nothing to be ashamed of, either, with such hits as “Shine”, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, and, of course, her most vitally important single of all time, “The Goonies R Good Enough”. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.
Expose oSaturday the 9th is really 80’s night in South Florida; Cyndi Lauper must feel like she’s in a timewarp, again competing against this girl group led by Miami DJ and producer Lewis Martinee. Maybe you don’t know the name, but you probably know some of their greatest hits: “Seasons Change”, “Point of No Return”, and “I’ll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me”. Their greatest accomplishment, though, came in 1995 when they were asked to record the heart-tugging ballad “I’ll Say Goodbye for the Two of Us” for the soundtrack to the film Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home. 9 p.m. Magic City Casino. 450 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33125.

Ring of Fire oJohnny Cash and June Carter represent one of the greatest, longest-lasting co-dependent abusive relationships of all time. It was no wonder they died each within a year of the other. No matter, Cash’s music, both dark and heartbreaking, lives on through our public consciousness and this live performance featuring Grammy Award winner Lari White and Tony Award winner Jarrod Emick crooning some of his best tunes. 12 additional performers will offer 38 hit songs by the legendary “Man in Black”. 7:30 p.m. World Performing Arts Center at Lynn University. 3601 N. Military Trail, Boca Raton, 33431.

Kenny G o Kenny G is a cultural icon, let’s be honest. Okay, maybe he’s not exactly everyone’s favorite artist. Yeah, there’s certainly a bunch out there who may find the jazz saxophonist to be rather, well, lame, yet there’s also a whole lot of elevators out there, and somebody’s got to create the musical score for intense, awkward trips up large buildings. The best thing about mister Kenny G: he’s got a sense of humor, as was evidenced by his appearance in Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” video and that Snickers television commercial. He’s touring to promote his Grammy-nominated latest release Heart and Soul. 7:30 p.m. Coral Springs Center for the Arts. 2855 Coral Springs Dr, Coral Springs, 33065.

Mozart “Romanze” o A night at the symphony only seldom happens in sunny South Florida so why not spend your Tuesday night unwinding with the child prodigy Mozart’s famous Concerty for Piano No. 20 in D minor? Symphony of the Americas and pianist Alexander Kobrin present this jubilant and tender Piano Concerto with the 2nd “Romanze” movement as the climax. The concert will close with Mozart’s famed Symphony No. 40 in G minor. Moscow born Alexander Kobrin performs with orchestras such as BBC, Warsaw, Tokyo and Belgrade. He won the Gold Prize of the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. 8:15 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Roman Vishniac Rediscovered o Photographer Roman Vishniac captured all of the tumult of mid-20th century Europe. Even the film Schindler’s List used his photography to model the fashions and art direction for the film. Most of his best-known work documents Eastern European Jewish life before the destruction wrought by the Holocaust. The gay-friendly Weimar Republic (Germany post-World War I) is also a focus of this exhibit, which showcases examples from 40 years of Vishniac’s work including newly discovered vintage prints, film footage and correspondence. 10 a.m. Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301. theguymag

Valentino’s Italian Cuisine
o
It’s hard to believe, but a space that lar no doubt. was once a Quizno’s is now a charming While we were waiting for our food, a man sitting across from me at the bar ordered the Italian restaurant. Tucked in-between daily special and the waitress called him by a Tijuana Flats and a Starbucks, Valentino’s Italian Cuisine is a little hard to spot. his first name, and on the way out said “See The plaza can be overlooked as you zoom by you tomorrow!”. The regulars here were truly on Federal Highway, but like all good things, regulars – in some cases, daily regulars. As our dishes arrived, I realized why. people eventually caught on. The pricing and portions transported me As I sat down at a bar that wrapped around two chefs kneading dough, I felt back to a time when restaurants weren’t affected by the recession. The $14 Chicken like I was in a legitimate Italian pizzeria in Marsala that I ordered at Valentino’s would New York. Frank Sinatra played in the background as I perused the menu, scango for $16-17 at another restaurant, which seemed to be the case for every item ning over a plethora of options. on the menu. Everything was priced The restaurant offers your classic VALENTINO’S lower than other restauItalian-American options: pizza, ITALIAN CUISINE slightly rants, without compromising the calzone/stromboli, hot and cold 427 S. Each sauce was deliveryman coming and going 954-545-4881 throughout my entire meal, and I savory and fresh, and the pasta was a realized that Valentino’s was a staple perfect al dente. I can’t believe that it’s November already! Time seems to race by at a reckless and shocking pace, especially during these stressful times. Fretting about your job, agonizing over this crappy economy, not getting enough sleep, poor nutritional habits, etc. are just a few of the factors that can age you, lickity split. You can use botox, collagen and a top notch plastic surgeon to fight off the ravages of Father Time, but you may just go broke in the process. Result: more damn stress! This week let’s take a look at some inexpensive techniques that will help you to look and feel younger from the inside out. Remember when your mother told you to stop scowling or your face would freeze that way? Well, she had a point. Every time you cop a facial expression, tiny creases form underneath the surface of your skin; the more you do the expression, the deeper the creases. As you age and your skin loses moisture and elasticity, these lines turn into permanent deep grooves. Hint: so that you won’t end up looking like one of the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz, try to keep your eyes, eyebrows and forehead relaxed. Also, try sleeping on your back and avoid sleeping on your side with your face scrunched up in the pillow. Yes, more time on your back will keep you looking younger! And don’t forget the importance of moisturizing your skin at night and in the morning before you go to work. Yo-yo, or crash diets, are a “no-no”! While it’s tempting to starve yourself or try a new gimmick

to shed fat fast, such strategies can wreak havoc with your heart, cause bagging, sagging skin, and make you fatter in the long run. Eat healthy and exercise regularly starting today! Diet wisely by losing only 1-3 pounds per week and always combine a sound nutritional plan with a program of wise, consistent exercise. Stop smoking and eating sweets. Both of these vices can cause wrinkles by speeding up the degradation of elastin and collagen, both crucial skin proteins. In addition, cigarette smoking can give you bad breath and yellow teeth. Attractive, no? Try eating more fruit instead of cupcakes and brownies. Try replacing cigarettes with more sex. Great cardio! Stress is here to stay. But when stress takes control, certain catabolic hormones, like cortisol, adrenaline and neurodrenaline, rage wildly in your body speeding up the aging process. Try deep breathing activities like Yoga and meditation, which can be done anywhere. Listen to classical music like Mozart. Masturbation is also a great stress releaser, but not recommended at your job. A great tan is sexy, but years of sun can also cause skin to become dry and wrinkled. Use a sunscreen, a minimum of SPF-15 daily and your skin will retain its moisture get the good sun it needs. For more fitness tips, contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com!
