Since performing at venues around the U.K., the pair has gained legions of new fans. Now, making their way onto U.S. radio airwaves, we have SD-JEM’s new single, “Roll With Me,” which is set to be released on May 20. The song, which already has a music video online for your viewing pleasure, is full of that urban/dance vibe that spells SUCCESS here in the states. Filled with some HOT dubstep & synth breakdowns, and a hook that could catch a Great White Shark, SD-JEM has released a top-notch debut track—and I’m sure we will be hearing MUCH more from them in the near future! Speaking of X-Factor alumni,” AIDEN GRIMSHAW from Season 7 of the U.K. X-Factor has recently premiered his debut single, “Is This Love.” The song is a beautiful drum and bassdriven track, with gorgeous harmonies and vocals to boot. The talented young artist made it all the way to the finals of the U.K. X-Factor, but after a tie between the judges, he lacked the votes to claim victory. But that didn’t stop the soon-tobe star. In fact, he has been working diligently on his debut album, “Misty Eye,” for the past two years. “Misty Eye” is set to drop on August 13, preceded by the single “Is This Love?” which hits stores June 3. A video for the song premiered on April 30, but is only viewable in the UK—for now. Be sure to check out this beautiful song from this beautiful boy, and his debut album later this year.

orah Jones has a tendency to be melancholic. Her newest studio album, “Little Broken Hearts” is no exception, although what’s unique here is that she has stepped out of her comfort zone. The Brooklyn-born singer/songw riter hits a home run teaming up with the fantastic artist/ producer Danger Mouse. Danger Mouse (forme rly of Gnarls Barkley) is known for his dark music; Jones for her airy, weepy vocals. Together they have created an amazing sound that is nothing like her past four studio albums. The dark, sleepy sounds of “Little Broken Hearts ” really stand out, and make for an unforgettabl e album. On her opening track “Good Morni ng,” Norah croons, “Why did you do it?/I couldn’t sleep/ I knew you were gone/Our loving is all I was after/b ut you couldn’t give it...so I’m moving on.” It becom es clear right away that this is a break-up album.

On “She’s 22,” her delivery of the lyrics “Does she make you happy?/I’d like to see you happy ” is nothing less than heartbreaking. However, instea d of dragging you down with the sentiment, Norah uses the music as a sort of therapy. The drows y music that backs these break-up ballads doesn ’t shoot you down. Instead, it cradles Jones’s soft, sweet vocals. Amidst the heartache, there’ s a surprising sense of confidence presented. She fearlessly sings of her own heartbreak, but also talks about healing and moving on. On “Say Goodb ye,” she ends by singing “Well it ain’t easy to stay in love when you’re telling lies/So, I’ll just have to take a bow and say ‘goodbye.’” This dreamy breakup album is Norah’s best work yet.

A Local Italian Tradition Hits Its Stride Eggplant Parmigiana

alk down Sunrise Blvd. in the vicinity of NE 18th Ave. on any Friday night and prepare to marvel at the line stretching around the block from the front door of Il Mulino Cucina Italiana. In what can only be described as a local tradition passed from one satisfied customer to another, this Italian restaurant is neither fancy nor romantic. No candlelight here, nor flowers on the tables. And while it’s not the most authentic Italian food in town, it’s really, really good and there is plenty of it at a fair price, pleasantly delivered. Translation: the place is packed, every night of the week, but particularly on Fridays where regulars gather like swallows drawn back to Capistrano. The smell of garlic fills the air at Il Mulino the way smoke hangs thick in a British pub. It’s not that every dish is doused with the odoriferous bulb, but those that are boast of its existence in the exuberant way that a child exhibits a new toy—with great pride and no reservation. The garlic bread is one example, brought to the table, a puffed up flat-bread triangle of buttered flavor that seduces your taste buds into having “just one more bite.” The minestrone soup ($4.95) is housemade with vegetables du jour from the kitchen, so the flavor is subtly different on different days, though always hearty. The same is true with the Chicken Marsala ($15.95), with grilled chicken tenders in a marsala wine and mushroom sauce, side of mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. Depending on the marsala reduction, this dish can taste overly salty some nights, so alert the chef to cut back on adding any extra sodium. Pure pleasure is the only way to describe the Eggplant Parmigiana ($14.95) topped with mozzarella and marinara

sauce. It’s a simple dish that is easy to ruin with too long a stretch in the oven. Il Mulino has perfected the timing to keep all the flavor and the consistency, breading its eggplant that is then blanketed with parmigiana and mozzarella, and a light marinara sauce. Heaven on a plate. For lighter fare, think salads. Il Mulino offers many including a superb blackened tuna salad at $14.95. The fresh tuna is seared rare, and accented with mandarin oranges, gaeta olives, chopped onions and tomatoes. It is served over a bed of baby spinach and red oak leaf lettuce that is drizzled with a housemade red wine vinaigrette. Equally as low in calories, but for the larger appetite: Zuppa di Pesce ($21.95)—a fish soup. The chef combines chunks of white fish with shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari in its own natural juices, served with linguine topped with a red sauce. This combination has been on the restaurant’s menu since it first opened in 1987, and with good reason. Spell it D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! All the pasta is housemade at Il Mulino, including the corkscrew shaped fusilli. It’s the star of our favorite entrée, Fusilli Naturale ($13.95). Dream about a dish that combines grilled chicken breast, fresh broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, and pine nuts in a balsamic natural reduction sauce. It is served on a plate the size of Sicily, heaped full of flavor and substance, topped with a giant dollop of formaggio di capra (which outside of Italy is goat cheese). If you have the room, the housemade tiramisu ($6) could be the most decadent dessert ever made, if it weren’t for the pastry chef’s cannolo ($5), pumped full of ricotta cheese and chocolate chips. Look: Up in the Sky! It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane!

n the original TV run of “The Jetsons,” the world was portrayed through the lens of high-tech gadgetry in every room and a flying car in every garage, something that clearly hasn’t come to pass 50 years after the show debuted in primetime in 1962. In the real world, there was an actual vehicle—or “roadable aircraft”—designed and built in 1949. The “Taylor Aerocar” utilized folding wings that allowed one person to convert the road vehicle into flight mode in five minutes (when the rear license plate was flipped up, the driver could connect the vehicle’s propeller shaft and attach a pusher propeller). Although the Feds gave its designer, Moulton Taylor, the green light for mass-production in 1956, the inventor’s business went the way of bell bottoms after a production run of only six vehicles. That makes this year’s New York International Auto Show last month all the more cool, with a first look at the Terrafugia Transition, a drivable airplane possessing folding wings and a system that allows for road use. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be paying close attention to data from its first test flight—with 74 others to follow—in order to determine its airworthiness. (A separate agency, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration [NHTSA], determined its

roadworthiness.) Sticker Price: $279,000. At the same time the Terrafugia was wagging tongues in an Upper East Side accent, the news was circulating that a Netherlands-based firm was rolling out the PAL-V (acronymic for Personal Air and Land Vehicle). PAL-V execs are anticipating a sticker of $300,000. New life was breathed into the flying car in 2004 with the FAA’s creation of the “light-sport” category, a designation devised to encourage the production of small single-engine aircraft that were easy to fly. The first such vehicle designed under the new classification was the Dunnellon, Florida-based Maverick in 2010 (Drive Off the Lot: $94,000), which utilizes a powered parachute system for flight. Because of the morass of Federal safety standards, the company markets the machine as a kit car rather than a road vehicle (though individual state safety requirements still apply), whereas the Transition will be sold as a multipurpose vehicle, requiring it to undergo a battery of safety tests, simulations, and the like. Among the things regulators will look closely at during Transition’s testing is how easy it is to drive for pilots who are issued light-sport licenses, which only require around 20 hours of instruction to be issued. The PAL-V, which has three wheels, is classified as a motorcycle by the NHTSA, which means it faces less stringent safety standards. The vehicle has already been approved in Europe for roadworthiness, and now awaits final approval from the EU’s aviation safety arm, something that might hasten its red tape voyage stateside. PAL-V officials anticipate production of flying cars in Europe beginning in 2014. (Funny thing is, “The Jetsons” was set in 2062—plenty of time for the fictional George Jetson to get his cartoon butt ready for what may yet accurately portray, after all, a future yet to come: Elroy Jetson lives!) like to harass my boyfriend for all the “check ins” he makes with social media (although our own DJ MAXIMUS 3000 takes the week’s Geek-to-theBytes Award for being the “Mayor” of the Guy Magazine editorial offices on FourSquare (and here I thought our creative director’s Star Trek fetish was cause for concern). Likewise, when Proculus or I cook at home, he likes to snap pictures of the dishes plateside, just before we dig in (last night’s Facebook uploads: Chicken nugget-andsausage kebabs). Little did Procky know that he was emulating the concept behind Foodspotting, an app that puts you in the picture creating visual menus for your favorite restaurants, along with a feedback-based recommendation engine integrated with social media functions to help a hungry user decide where—and what—to eat. Like the iHeartRadio app, Foodspotting lets you program it based upon your food “loves” and “hates,” so that someone with low-sodium needs, for instance, can weed out those menu choices that aren’t friendly to their dietary requirements. These “loves” and “hates” refine the sorts of dishes the app will recommend to you in the future. The social media integration lets you see what your friends on Facebook (as well as your own personal Foodspotting follows) have to say about a particular menu selection, as well as what epicurean

“experts” (defined as an admirer of a particular dish who has a history of logging images and reviews on the app). “Loving” certain types of dishes will also build your library of recommends, as the app offers suggestions for similar dishes or different versions of the same dish at different eateries. Search menus allow users to locate a specific type of dish in their areas, or find restaurants using a map. A half dozen different sections (Specials, Nearby, Best, Latest, Following, and Me) include images of dishes and the ability to categorize a particular one a “Want,” something you have “Tried,” or “Love[d].” Eateries are also categorized in order of distance from where you are at the moment, and there’s loads more, including a library containing over one million images of restaurant yummies, and a community of users that keeps the app fresh, not frozen. Getting Psyched and Staying Pumped! How working out can muscle up your mind and spirit!

ou’ve probably spent enough time in the gym to realize that there are real tangible results that come from pumping iron and churning out cardio. Granite glutes, bulging biceps, a sexy, cut six-pack are but a few of the results of all your sweaty hard labor. But did you also know that exercise can relieve stress and pressure at work, help you think like a creative whiz kid on your feet and generally make you feel rejuvenated and invincible? The benefits of working out the body go way beyond just looking good and showing it off and here’s how! Studies have proven that regular cardio work can enhance the ability of neurotransmitters in the brain to work faster. This higher ability won’t replace a good education or being generally street-smart, but it can help you to think clearer, quicker and more creatively. As a trainer, I find that clients who are anxious and stressed, over worked, or generally depressed and tired, report feeling energized and upbeat after early morning exercise. As a result, they are more relaxed and confident all day at work, and seem to think more clearly and creatively on the job. While a lot of people cannot realistically work out before work, those clients who do regular cardio and weight training throughout their busy week report basically the same increase in energy, confidence and creativity. The feelings you get after a workout, namely the adrenaline rush and the feeling of overall accomplishment, can lift you spirits and boost your energy levels all day long. Do you come home from work and crash in exhaustion? Does your heart race when you’re stuck in traffic before a big presentation or meeting? You have the power to

change this misery. Start doing cardio, or alter your present cardio routine and don’t forget to pump some iron while you are at it! You might think these activities would add to your overall feelings of stress and tiredness, but you are wrong. Psychologists say that a key element behind failing under pressure is physical fatigue. Regular cardio (running, biking or swimming) actually energizes you and it charges up your brain and body for tough situations – like your ball-busting boss, or those whining do-nothing co-workers who grate on your nerves and bring you down. Throwing the weights around helps you to alleviate frustration and pent-up aggression as you build gorgeous muscles in the process! If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Sleep deprivation can literally make you crazy. Without enough good quality sleep—8 to 10 hours a night—you will not be able to perform at work, you will feel frazzled and foggy and lack of sleep can also make you store fat more easily. Instead of groping for another sleeping pill, go for the treadmill instead. Regular cardio exercise lowers your resting pulse rate, can lower blood pressure, revs up your metabolism, improves digestion, and biologically assists your brain in producing feel-good endorphins. Regular exercise will help you function better during the day and rest better at night. How excellent is that? like being choked. A little. My experience tells me this isn’t an uncommon want. Before you get your panties in a bunch, I’m not talking erotic asphyxia. At least not what comes to mind when you hear the term “erotic asphyxia”—I don’t enjoy being strangled to the point of passing out or anything. I prefer the cuddle-choke. Let me explain. I met a cute guy at a bar recently. He was tall and masculine, rugged with that oh-so-desirable “straight-acting” quality about him. And to top it off, he was sweet. Very sweet. He told me I was “f***ing cute,” and showed jealousy when I spoke to other men. When I met the guy, I told him right away I wasn’t good for a hook-up. Not my style. He appreciated it. He thought it was adorable, he said, and he respected my boundaries. Of course, as the night waned, I wanted him to want to take me home—regardless of whether I was going to or not. At the end of the night, as we stood outside with my friends, he talked to me about how much he liked tinkering with his car. He told me about his dog. And he reminded me that he thought I was attractive. In other words, he sealed the deal. He saw that I was his, and my “no hookups” policy went out the door. “So do I get to take you home?” he asked. “I guess,” I smiled. “But only to cuddle.” “Deal.” Later, in his messy bedroom, we lay in our underwear: I in a fetal position, him behind, holding me. I felt his big chest against my back, his scruffy face in the crook of my neck, his big arms around my waist, pushing my butt against his— ahem. Anyway, it was nice. I felt sexy, yes. I felt wanted. But more than that, I felt safe. I felt like he was a protector of sorts. A very schoolgirl thing for me to think, sure, but I felt it nonetheless. As we lay there, his hand caressed my chest and made its way up to my throat, where it lingered for a little while, and continued over my face. He touched my cheek with the back of his hand. He patted my hair. And then he returned his hand to my throat. He didn’t apply pressure or anything, but for some reason this act alone made me feel safer still. I gave his hand around my neck a gentle nudge. He pushed into me harder and squeezed it. Just a little. The act aroused me immediately. It didn’t hurt, and I could still breathe. It was odd, this feeling. Like it made him more dominant in my eyes, but also somehow more of a protector. This is the cuddle-choke: a passionate, twisted way of cuddling with someone in a way that shows off dominance—and affection. My ex introduced me to this. Maybe that’s why it holds such significance for me. Like he’s still there, somehow. As if it’s one part of him I can’t let go. Or, more likely, it’s just us boys--prudes in the street, but freaks in the bed.

hen Rev. Jamie N. Grace was deciding upon the mission for WIG Ministries, he knew that at its heart it needed to focus on the youth of the LGBT community. Grace says he founded WIG (an acronym for “Wild Inspirational Gatherings”) because he was tired of watching news reports of gay kids—many depressed and unable to find a reason to explore their wonderful young lives—committing suicide, and he decided to take action. That decision comes to its fruition on Wednesday, May 16, with the first meeting of WIG Ministries at The Manor Restaurant and Complex in Wilton Manors. “I want not just young people but people of all ages,” insists Grace, who adds that “it’s not just about being gay, but about discussing everything from being masculine to line dancing, from music to getting older, from twinks to Bears, and every other aspect of gay life.” “This is about teaching the next generation,” Grace explains. “That’s why I need all kinds of people to be involved. Every gay person struggles and strives to understand the nature of spirituality. WIG will do exactly that, with a framework that’s half spiritual and half education,” he says. “I came from a New England Jewish background,” Grace recalls, “and my vision is to inspire kids to this life and be proud of their being gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender.” Says Grace: “Folks have to realize that gays are the ‘other chosen people,’ and being chosen isn’t a choice, it’s a blessing, a miracle.” He sums up the purpose behind the ministry as “Being proud of who you are and what you are.” He is also careful to point out what WIG Ministries is not.

“This is not going to be a church type of atmosphere,” he insists. “It’s to be a cool space for all to come and enjoy. We are going to have a ‘Gangster Choir.’ As I call it, we will have three ‘fingers:’ WIGsters, videos, and limo rides. Many of these kids have never experienced any of these, and many have lived in fear of being found out. I want them to learn to be able to live proudly,” adds Grace. “Right now, we have 3,400 Facebook friends, and it’s growing every day. Our first WIG Revival on May 16 will be followed by a private meet-and-greet with libations and appetizers,” Grace notes. He says of the event “It’s a musical, it’s a revival—no it’s Gay Pride every Wednesday night!” adding “I expect really friendly people, and The Manor has been so helpful in getting the ball rolling. We are also inviting artists in the area to display their works.” “I am also looking for local impersonators to help entertain. So far I have Joan Rivers and Jennifer Hudson, Cher, Divine, and Pink—so I think it’s going to just be a great evening of getting people together.” Grace then shares with a smile, “I used to be an impersonator by the name of ‘Trinity,’ so she may even make an appearance.” The WIG minister says that there is a suggested donation of $10.00 for the May 16 Revival, with VIP tickets available for $30.00. Grace is quick to point out that this isn’t a “cover charge.” “No one will be turned away due to lack of funds,” adding that “This is just too important.”
