Frenchie Kiss and Tell “American Idol” Sensation Comes to Bill’s

renchie Davis first hit the world stage in Season 2 of “American Idol.” Since then she has starred on stage in the Broadway and touring productions of “Rent,” “Dream Girls,” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (a performance that earned the singer her first Grammy nomination). Last year, she hit the national spotlight again, joining Team Christina on NBC’s hit show “The Voice,” and becoming one of the top four finalists. After her cover of “When Love Takes Over” landed at number on the iTunes Dance Chart, she was ready to get started on an album—teaming with international singer/songwriter Janice Robinson to record “Love’s Got A Hold of Me,” her first single from the upcoming album, “Just Frenchie.” Hear it live when she performs the track this Saturday, October 13, at Bill’s Wilton Manors, on Wilton Drive. Mario Weir caught up with Davis for GUY Magazine. GM: Have you been in love? FD: Love has been painful in the past. These days it’s pretty wonderful. I’m in love with a woman I think I can be with forever. GM: Is being a prisoner to love a good or bad thing? FD: You have to find a balance. You want to give your all to your partner without losing yourself. You don’t want to wake up one day not having a clue who you are anymore. GM: What do you love about singing? FD: I feel free when I sing and I love to create colors with my voice. GM: Did you love starring on Broadway? FD: Musical theatre was my first love, and how I first fell in love with music. The best part was developing the discipline and endurance required to do eight shows a week. You hear so many stories about performers suffering from exhaustion. After surviving the Broadway schedule for five years, I believe I can survive anything. GM: What part did hitting number three on iTunes play in releasing your own music now?

18

|

guy magazine

FD: It made me realize, maybe I can still do this. And maybe I can do dance music instead of R&B. There are enough big black girls doing R&B already. GM: Tell us about your first single, “Love’s Got a Hold on Me.” FD: It’s a dance track written by my dear friend Janice Robinson, best known for the songs she’s written for Deborah Cox and Ashley Tisdale. The track was produced by Magnificent, a really talented artist from NYC. Brian Friedman, who I love for his work with Britney Spears and The X Factor, co-directed and choreographed the video.

GM: What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working? FD: I love to go swimming at the beach. It relaxes me, and it is awesome exercise. GM: What’s next? FD: In addition to my debut album, I’m putting the finishing touches on my Christmas album. And I’m really excited to be in talks about starting my own line of plus-size bras and lingerie! V

elvet Lenore is a Florida girl, beginning her career up the coast in West Palm Beach, and she still calls the place home to this day. To be a drag sensation in the Orchid City is no small achievement, since this is the place that’s a hop, skip and a bridge away from the mansions and blue bloods of Worth Avenue, the Mar-a-Lago Club, and the Biltmore. Very posh and very conservative. Velvet got her start through another local ingénue of sequined gowns and bouffant wigs— the lovely Melissa St. John, who plucked her off the dance floor and (suggested through some sort of drag ESP) that Velvet had a future in female impersonation. The Diva of Palm Beach, as St. John is known, backed up her prediction with dress, wig, jewelry and music for Velvet to transform into Janet Jackson for a night-a debut that found her “scared to death.” The fright was overcome quickly enough however in the form of tips that very first evening. “I must say I did make a lot of money—and in cash,” Velvet remembers. It’s been 19 years last month since that debut and

Velvet has never looked back. “Even though it was all purely accidental, I had been trained as a dancer and I just took to drag. First, through contests—I won Miss Hollywood in 1999, and then I went on to win Miss Illusion. Eventually, I began to do shows”—the last five of those years as a member of the popular Lips team of regulars. “My career got a real push when I met Marvin Nathan at a little restaurant club called 502 that Gene Conti owned in West Palm Beach. It was one of my first jobs, and Marvin joined the show. He was already established in drag and he took me under his wing, giving me tips about improving my act. I’ll always love Marvin for that.” Velvet performs from Melbourne to Fort Lauderdale, traveling to find opportunities to entertain. That job has become more involved now that she’s expanded her act to include a group of dancers whose intensity is nothing short of aggressive and whose talents are exceptional. “I’ve always loved to dance, and I have my own dance group now (R. Nielsen, Krya Kennaugh, and Danny G.). These are a group of dedicated kids who give up there own time to rehearse for the love of dance,” Velvet says, obviously proud of her “babies.” “I’m known as the Production Queen and for being on time,” Velvet says. “So when I come in, it’s a complete package.” The music, the choreography, the costumes— look out. Experience Velvet Lenore at Lips (2021 E Oakland Park Blvd.) in performance every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and see drag at its best.

This Is What a

“Modern Family” Looks Like

F

or the third year in a row, ABC’s smash sitcom “Modern Family” won a clean sweep in most of last month’s Emmy Awards categories. Star Eric Stonestreet, who plays chunky Cameron on the hit series, was up against—so to speak—his TV hubby, actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays uptight redhead Mitchell for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. After Stonestreet (who is straight) proved a repeat-winner, co-star Ferguson stopped by the set of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to playfully bitch about the loss. Asked by host Kimmel if Stonestreet had been pulling for his screenp a r t n e r, Ferguson said with smarm, “Who knows if it’s true, but he said he wanted me to win.” To bolster his chances of a win at next year’s Emmys, Ferguson, 36, unveiled a mock “attack ad,” in which he accuses Stonestreet of “steal[ing] gay American jobs,” and calls him a “liar” and an “ass-kisser.” (Sounds like a typical night at my place.) In June 2011, he and Abner served as honorary Grand Marshals for Wilton Manors’ Stonewall Street Parade and Festival.

Etheridge Rocks for Maryland Marriage Equality

S

till-rocking singer Melissa Etheridge has sent out a letter on behalf of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, calling for equal treatment under the law for every American. As some added incentive for supporting same-sex marriage, Etheridge is offering campaign donors a chance to meet her backstage during an upcoming show in Bethesda. “Two of my dearest friends are Marylanders in a committed relationship without legal protection,” Etheridge wrote. “They are not treated with the same basic equality as their next door neighbors. You can help change that in November.” She signed the letter, “Choose only Love, Melissa Etheridge.” Last month, the singer (“Come to My Window”) told TV host Joy Behar, “I’m for gay marriage, because I’m for gay divorce.” She added: “I don’t think people realize what a system heterosexuals have for marriage. You can marry someone and then, oops.” Etheridge noted it cost her twice as much to end her domestic partnership with actress Tammy Lynn Michaels because of tax liabilities for gay couples.

fter videos earlier this year by Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo in support of marriage equality, Kluwe’s former NFL teammate—and Ayanbadejo’s current one— Ravens center Matt Birk has come out swinging for the other team (metaphorically speaking, we’re talking about football players, boys). Last week, in an editorial that appeared in Kluwe’s hometown paper, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, went on offense, saying that “Same-sex unions may not affect my marriage specifically, but it will affect my children—the next generation. Ideas have consequences, and laws shape culture,” Birk complained. Further confusing this century with the 17th, he added, “Marriage redefinition will affect the broader well-being of children and the welfare of society. As a Christian and a citizen, I am compelled to care about both.” Birk is in the studio this week— recording an anti-gay marriage video.

After Birk’s screed, his former teammate, Kluwe, tweeted, “I saw Matt Birk’s piece, yes I will be crafting a response, but it won’t be until after the game tomorrow. Locked in on the job now.”

I want to see this one played out on the field! …and Rupert Everett Thinks Gays Don’t Need To ‘Clarifying’ his recent remarks that he “can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads,” British actor Rupert Everett put on his best “agony aunt” voice and offered this advice on same-sex marriage: “Why do queens want to go and get married in churches?” He added: “I don’t understand that, myself, personally. I loathe heterosexual weddings; I would never go to a wedding in my life. I loathe the flowers. I loathe the f***ing wedding dress, the little bridal tiara. It’s grotesque. It’s just hideous. The wedding cake, the party, the champagne, the inevitable divorce two years later. It’s just a waste of time in the heterosexual world, and in the homosexual world I find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution that is so clearly a disaster.” Is there anyone left he hasn’t offended? Seriously, Rupert needs an intervention.

How to Prep For a Fun—and Fabulous—

First Date “So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day.”

Ryan Gosling, “The Notebook”

W

e spend a lot of time in this column discussing lots of ways to entertain at home, how to throw meaningful and memorable parties and themed events, and to enjoy the nicer things, whether on a shoestring budget, or on a budget more like a Hilton’s (hotel, Paris, or Perez—take your pick). But having social skills and taste means little if you have no one to share them—or your stylish sense of fun and entertaining—with. It’s time to put your money where your mouth is (take your mind out of the gutter—at least for now—laddie-me-buck). Eventually, you will want to put your game-face on, and take it to the field of sport. There’s a lot of tricking and playing around that I see, but as far as dating goes, it seems to be a Lost Art (if not a Dead Language) in the Gayborhood. A great first date sets the tone not only for the future of that one romantic possibility—it also helps you to wore yourself in a kinder, gentler, more charming and fun manner. Ready, Romeo? Incidentally, these tips can be applied by both actual first-daters and already-in-the-mix couples looking to return some of that “early stages of romance”-freshness to things. Strong Rule Number 1: It’s never too late to have a great first date.

Serenity, Now!

Try to keep those pre-date jitters at bay by doing things that relax you. Believe You, Me: The calmer your façade (I used that word intentionally) on your first date, the more likely it is that you’ll get to date Number Two, Prince Charming, and smoother it will go.

After you’ve figured out how you plan to spend your first date do something to distract yourself, and focus your excess of energy: Work out, go jogging, get a massage (or pedicure!), have a light, relaxing lunch. The less time you spend obsessing about things, the more serene and sharp you’re likely to be.

“Revvin’ up your engine/ Dress to Ensure Success Start with your feet and work your way up Listen to her howlin’ roar/ Metal under tension/Beggin’ to your head, If you are dressing comfortably, you to touch and go/Highway you won’t be distracted by having to adjust to the Danger Zone/Ride into your belt, or feeling that your feet are going to explode inside shoes that look great but feel the Danger Zone” (Theme from “Top Gun”) A first date is a nerve-wracking experience. For starters, you’re juiced on adrenaline—and nerves!—I anticipation of the great time you’re hoping to have. This is just as true if you’ve met the person through a friend, at work, in an online chat—or on Grindr. Take that nervous energy, and do something constructive with it. (What, you never learned about coping mechanisms?) If you’re planning an evening at home, use that excess-of-energy to make sure every detail is perfect. Is the kitchen and dining room spotless? Have you cleaned the bathroom you plan for your guest to use? Are you glasses and utensils clean? Did you clean the bathroom? Is there ambience-enhancing music and lighting to set the tone? Did you clean the bathroom? (You get the idea on this one.) Have you chosen a fun and/or romantic movie to enjoy together (“Shakespeare In Love” springs to mind, but your—and his—tastes will vary)? Is it dine in, eat out, or just drinks and uh, something else? (This last scenario is how my relationship with Mr. Wonderful began.)

“Who Are You? Who-o-o-o?” (The Who) Like your mom always told you, “Be yourself.” It is undoubtedly the best way to make the best first impression. Acting like someone you’re not will peg you as insincere and make it next to impossible to win back (some would say “earn”) that trust, to say nothing about making a lasting and meaningful connection with another person. Don’t worry if you appear a little nervous— that’s genuine, and anyone worth his salt will appreciate that you’re trying to make a good impression (just don’t act like a kiss-ass).

“It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together— and I knew it.” Tom Hanks, “Sleepless In Seattle”

No matter what happens, you should give yourself permission well in advance to have a great time. If it’s truly a first date, there’s a chance things won’t go as you had planned. Guess what, big guy? It happens to the best— and worst—of us. If you have gone to the trouble of preparing a meal or other repast at home, you owe it to yourself and your guest— not to mention your reputation as a good sport, a great host, and the “one who got away”—to conduct yourself with grace, gentility, and hospitality. (My bf turned down three chances to “go out” before he finally “gave in”—and he hasn’t left since.) If things do go as planned or hoped, then taking the time to prep yourself, mind, body, and environment will go a long way to making it a first date to remember, and then some.

Bringing a “Core” Philosophy to Health and Fitness Eat correctly and you’ll lose the fat.

Exercise correctly and you’ll build muscle.” You can’t help but pick Andy Kress out of a crowd: His infectious smile is unmistakable, and his Asian body tattoos are featured each week in ads for his Kress Fitness Studio. In a town that isn’t lacking in personal trainers, Kress has left his mark by taking a different approach to fitness training. “My technique is cardioresistence. emphasizing lighter weights and more repetitions,” he explains. “While cardio exercise alone is great for building endurance and working your heart, it is not really effective for weight loss like most people think.” Spend an hour on a treadmill and you would be hardpressed to burn 400 calories— less than in a single Big Mac. “When I do utilize cardio, we will do highintensity for three minutes, and then drop back to a slower speed for one minute, and then right back up to the three minutes with greater intensity, light weight and low impact programs.” Kress tries to anticipate what the unique needs of each client will require, both in terms of a training regimen and budget. “When [we] work out in the studio, you experience a ‘beach-style’ atmosphere,” says Kress. “We have weekday Yoga classes, Monday and Wednesday starting at 6:15 p.m. The rate is $20 per person. We also offer 30-minute training sessions for $30, or one-hour personal training at $50. I really have tried to structure the studio with so many variables to help as many people as possible.” Andy is a internationally certified fitness trainer (CFT) with additional certification as a Specialist in Exercise Therapy (SET) for those healing from injuries or muscle strains. His unique program was developed at the University

of Arkansas where he taught students between ages 16-80, and he has been the personal trainer of superstars and celebrities in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, California. Now headquartered in his own fitness studio near the Target store in Fort Lauderdale, Andy offers the most cost-effective rates in town. “First time clients can try a 30-minute workout for only $20. We also offer couples training, step aerobics, resistance training—and we really try to make it a fun experience. The one thing that I have learned working out is that if you have fun, you are far more likely to continue on and succeed,” he explains. Working out is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle—but so is eating right. “I have a culinary background, so it’s great when I can counsel someone who also wants some assistance with their diets,” Kress notes. “Exercise is about toning the body, not weight loss,” he says, correcting a misimpression. Though he’s only in his early 30s, Andy gets his greatest satisfaction working with those over 40 who fall into the category of Baby Boomers. He is the co-author (with client/ writer Richard Hack) of “The Baby Boomers’ Guide to the Fountain of Youth,” which is about to be published (and a certain bestseller). Help Siri to Help You I

ntegrating Siri with your iOS Contacts helps take away a lot of the “heavy lifting” when it comes to making calls, sending texts or emails, and finding the shortest route to your Grindr trick’s place. The problem comes in when you’re dating someone named “Auggie Chmielowski,” and you try to look him up using a voice-prompt—but the app only recognizes easy-to-pronounce monikers like “Bill Jones.” The good news is that there’s an easy was to accommodate non-traditional (or boring, depending how you see it) names by adding each name’s phonetic pronunciation directly into your Contact record. Here’s how: Open the Contacts app, and then tap on the person’s name, followed by Edit. Near the bottom of the page, you will see the “Add Field” option—tap on it for a list of additional fields you can add to your record. In our tonguetied, loved r u n k example above, for

“Chmielowski,” you will select “Phonetic Last Name,” and enter something like “Shimmillowskee,” and then do it for the “Phonetic First Name” and type in “Oggy.” This step will not only help Siri better recognize these names—it will also help ‘her’ with pronouncing names that ‘she’ reads back to you. Even though this means that the iOS Contacts app will sort based on Phonetic Names (rather than actual names), to me this is a small price for Siri to accurately recognize your names, ryte?

Google Field Trip:

Personal Guide-Boy, or Agent of the Apocalypse?

T

he well-publicized corporate parting-ofthe-ways between Google and Apple has spawned, in part, a cool little app that offers all sorts of facts and figures about the world around you—literally. Wherever you are—a beach, an oldschool building downtown, a toney new restaurant, a public park, or a section of town—Field Trip will provide historical info and trivia about the real, physical world around you. It’s like having a friend who serves as your personal walking tour guide, always on in the background, providing details about something interesting in your immediate physical environment. This fits in nicely with Google’s long-range tech plans (Google Glass, anyone?), which relate to a “big idea” called “ubiquitous computing” or—more poeticallysounding—“ambient intelligence:” Computer programs that are woven into the texture of life. The idea is that computers and tech will eventually become part of the landscape—so to speak—and mesh seamlessly with the environment around you. Going back to my earlier example of Google Glass—the Web-based eyewear that is essentially a smartphone for your face—the technology, in a pretty good imitation of artificial intelligence, scan your immediate environment and imparts to you what the Web knows about the places around you. (Can you say, “Terminator,” or the Singularity?) With Field Trip, Google can use the information from its Zagat service to disseminate restaurant reviews, or use Vayable for city tours, as well as selling deals through Google Offers—all based upon your current geography. Field Trip lets you choose which notifications you receive—so, for instance, you can turn off Google Offers—as well as how often you get them. You can also opt not to receive any alerts, which means you will have to open the app to find relevant info on where you are, but that’s half the fun of exploring a new place anyway. The app can also read notifications to you if your smartphone is hooked to Bluetooth or a headset, or if you are driving, which the app can determine just by the speed at which you’re travelling. Cool (scary, too). Field Trip is available for Android, and an iPhone version is planned. Get it (the Terminator would want you to). TRIP THIS: Free.

Soundfreaq Sound Kick SFQ-0

The Little Soundfreaq

Sound Kick (SFQ-04) Packs a Big Punch

When Proculus and I first started watching Netflix, I failed to get a USB connector cable for the television, so we would gather around my laptop— like early cave-dwellers huddled around a small fire—and try ever-so-hard to listen to the dialog through the crappy built-in speaker. The sound was so low that we had to literally turn off all household appliances just to hear what was being said. (Laugh it up.) Eventually, this problem corrected itself (or rather, my boyfriend corrected it—by taking a 15-minute trip to Target on US 1; my angel), but it wasn’t long after that another audio challenge presented itself. Often times, the only thing keeping you from a “harmonious” relationship with your computer’s soundcard (or the listening pleasure of any other high-tech device) is the want of a wireless speaker. The Soundfreaq Sound Kick SFQ-04 is a Bluetooth wireless speaker that—while not the smallest kid on the wireless speaker block—has a lot of things to speak for it. For one thing, the back of the Sound Kick pulls out, giving its chassis more internal air space, which equates to superior bass response. The back likewise functions as a kickstand, which aims the speaker with an upward-tilt, dispersing the sound better. Measuring 10 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches, it is about the size of a pint glass. You need an AC adapter to charge it (a USB won’t work with it—but it can charge your USB devices when playing audio at around half volume, even just on battery power). The Soundfreaq can also charge the iPhone 4/4Sand iPods, with a charge that lasts 7 hours. Now who’s the ’freaq? SOUND OFF: +/- $100.

C

hicago, Chicago, that toddlin’ town,” Frank Sinatra sang in his 1964 recording of “My Kind of Town.” It was quite the popular hit at the time, though we’ve always been hard pressed to understand what a toddlin’ town actually is. One thing we do know is that Chicago has earned every bit of its reputation as an exciting, sophisticated and dangerous place to live. Yes, dangerous. So far this year, there have been over 400 murders in Chicago—more murders than the much larger cities of New York (312) and Los Angeles (212). That aside, it’s fortunate that the charm of this town continues unabated, particularly for those with an interest in architecture and the arts. The Art Institute of Chicago (111 S Michigan Ave) is the second largest museum in the United States (the largest is the Metropolitan in New York). It has a truly amazing permanent collection, particularly focusing on impressionist The Art Institute of Chicago- second and postlargest museum in the US impressionistic painters. Additionally, the African American Art Collection found here is well known for its assortment of paintings by Archibald John Motley, Jr. There’s a roof-top terrace that provides a great break from the art, and offers a fantastic view of the city. For those using public transportation, head for the Adams/Wabash Station via the Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, or Purple Lines. Architecturally speaking, Chicago is a Whitman’s Sampler of tastes and style. Some of our favorite buildings in this city on Lake Michigan include Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica (3121 W Jackson Blvd.); the former Sears Tower—now officially called the Willis Tower (233 S Wacker Dr)—at one time the tallest building in the world; the Chicago Avenue Pumping Station (821 N Michigan Ave) that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; the

CNA Center (333 S Wabash Ave), whose major claim to fame is its sunset red paint; and the 311 S Wacker Dr. Building that holds two distinctions. Until recently, it was the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world, and it remains the tallest building to be known by its street address alone. The city devotes over eight percent of its land area to parks. Of these, Lincoln Park holds a special place for us since it is not only the largest of Chicago’s parks (with 1,200 acres), it is also the only park to span many different neighborhoods throughout the north side as it is nestled between Lake Shore Dr. and Lake Michigan. As such, it has many different entrances, but the one located at 2001 N Clark St. will get you to the front of the Lincoln Park Zoo—always a fun place to visit. Any time of the day or night, Grant Park, located in the downtown business district along Lake Michigan, is showcased by the famed Buckingham Fountain, dedicated in 1927. A water show operates in the Rococo-style fountain from April to October, with decorative lighting taking the stage when the weather turns cooler. For those into trivia, the fountain was featured in the opening credits to the TV hit “Married….with Children.” Our favorite new hotel in Chicago is the PUBLIC (11301 N State Pkwy.). Lincoln Park Zoo, always The one-time a fun place to visit Ambassador East Hotel, home of the famous Pump Room, has been re-invented by Ian Schrager (of Studio 54 fame). While the Pump Room remains a fragment of its former self, the guest rooms in PUBLIC are incredibly efficient, lovely, and beginning at $135 a night, they’re a bargain. Next week, we’ll cover the bar and club scene of the Windy City. Hold your breath. It’s worth the wait.

I

Confessions of a Personal Trainer

f I’ve said it once, I’ve proclaimed it a thousand times, I have one of the best jobs in the world! As a personal trainer (and licensed massage therapist and owner of my own gym), I get to work with some of the finest and most interesting ladies and gentlemen in Fort Lauderdale. Day in and day out I get to help them feel healthier, look better and live longer. As a trainer, my work is not just about handing weights to clients and standing around blankly counting to “12.” It is much, much more. A CFT (certified fitness trainer) has a responsibility to provide a safe, happy atmosphere and situation where clients are challenged and pushed, but also respected and affirmed for their hard work and commitment. Is this always an easy task? No, but for the most part, life is good and my clients rock! With that said, I’d like to remind anyone who presently uses, or is thinking of hiring a personal trainer, what they need to look for in this individual. First, make sure the trainer has an up to date certification and liability insurance. Second, if possible, watch the trainer in action with other clients. Is he attentive and does he take notes? Or is he on the phone or always texting? If you are going to make the personal and financial commitment of hiring a trainer, get a professional who will be undyingly devoted to you throughout the entire duration of your session! Most trainers will meet with a prospective client for a free consultation before either party makes a commitment. Make sure to write down your questions and fitness goals. Ask this person about his training philosophy, methods, style, etc. and how he would go about helping you to achieve your objectives. Inquire about the trainer’s flexibility and availability so that you both can easily coordinate your schedules. Once you’ve found the right

58

person, remember that you as a client have responsibilities to your trainer. If you can’t treat your trainer with courtesy and respect, as you should any other paid professional in your life, then you are wasting his time and your money. Everyone is occasionally tardy, but some people make it a habit. Not only is this disrespectful to your trainer, but it also shows that you are not serious about attaining your fitness goals (i.e. weight loss, building muscle, staying healthy, etc.). Make the commitment to yourself and your trainer, show up on time, ready to warm up and, if you can, leave that damn phone in the car to reduce distractions. Habitual cancellations are not acceptable. You would not put up with a personal trainer who was a constant no-show. Everyone, on occasion, has emergencies and scheduling conflicts and these are understandable. But last minute texts and calls to cancel on a regular basis are rude and inconsiderate. If you have to cancel, at least give your trainer a 24 hour notice, or expect to be charged for the session. If you find yourself swamped at work or stuck in traffic, simply call your trainer, apologize and ask if you can re-schedule your session. Hiring a personal trainer is an investment in your health and well being. Expect nothing less than the best service from your CFT. Realize also that this is a relationship and as such you must do your part to make it successful and fruitful. For more information or tips on fall fitness and workout routines that will do the trick for you, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.

ew individuals have been as vocal and visible as Terry De Carlo, a familiar face to both community members and colleagues in the non-profit sector, in which Terry has worked admirably and with dedication for two decades, with a focus on HIV-AIDS. De Carlo, the Director of Development for Broward House (the county’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service organization), previously worked with Care Resource, helping to produce the nearly 30-yearold White Party, one of the world’s “crown jewel” circuit parties attended by thousands of hot international men who come to Miami for a magical weekend of dancing, food, and, of course, a few cocktails. It would surprise many people who know of DeCarlo’s grinding work schedule that he lives with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), a condition that has reduced his lung capacity by 60 percent. But—like the Energizer Bunny— he just keeps on going. He helps organize Broward House’s successful community events, including the wildly popular “Amazing Race,” and “Broward Bares It” fundraiser benefiting persons with HIV/AIDS. “We once again produced ‘Broward Bares It’ at the Seminole Hard Rock, and we once again had a sold out crowd,” says DeCarlo. “It is a major production. You just can’t put people out there on a stage—you have to rehearse and work with sound and lighting. It has to be done right,” he adds.

As well as the smashing success of Typhoon Lagoon during June’s Orlando Gay Days, “We are bringing in Wanda Sykes for a [December 2] concert at the Broward Center, and we just booked Joan Rivers for June 2013,” he says with barely-contained excitement. “Last year, we had a fantastic turnout with Margaret Cho, and each year we try to step it up,” he explains, and adds, “But, frankly, it comes back to one thing: We have to get the message out that HIV is still out there, and is still a threat.” To learn more about Terry DeCarlo and the ongoing community efforts of Broward House, as well as its many fun and supportive activities, visit browardhouse.org.

Love Jones

: s r e s a e l P e l p o Pe By JUSTIN JONES

et me start this week with a fun fact about you and me: We are all social and, no matter how fervently some will deny it, we crave acceptance. Not by everyone, of course. I, for example, take no issue in being left out of fantasy football leagues (or terrorist cells). Generally speaking, we want people to like us. Were this not the case, we’d make no sacrifices for our friends, and their charity towards us would dry up. Nor would we likely find partners, keep decent jobs, or dress the way we do. Even those who consider themselves “outsiders” living on the fringe aim to find solidarity: The fringe “community” wouldn’t exist were there no “community” with which to so label it. That we are inherently social creatures is a good thing (it’s gotten our species this far). But some take the license too far—some feel that they MUST be liked by everyone. The cliché is to label these types as “People-Pleasers,” but I prefer to call them “douchebags.” If you MUST be liked by everyone (and sometimes it’s hard not feeling that way), there are two possible routes: 1) You lose all personality traits—and ticks—that might be considered even mildly controversial (and thus affect a bland, lukewarm personality); or, 2) You become a disingenuous chameleon whose personality is lost behind all the masks you wear. Whatever route you chose, you are not being “you,” and so failure is the eventual end. If you wish to be liked by everyone, you must dedicate the rest your life to it. You must never speak out of turn (unless presentcompany enjoys it). You must act with high regard to even those with whom you disagree (unless a challenge is what they’re after). You

must place the considerations of others above your own, and give reverence to others’ wishes or expectations—even with trivialities (small things build with time, you know). And in all of this, at every turn, you will be met with dilemmas, such as when you’re faced with two or more people who have wildly different expectation— situations from which you must always excuse yourself, or else risk being exposed as a social deceiver. Yes, your goal must be to please everyone all the time, either through proactive forms of lying (“OMG—I love all the same things you love!”), or total complacency. And despite all your “best” efforts, you will still fail. There will be instances when you disappoint your “friends,” no matter how hard you try. Even more devastating to People-Pleasers are those annoyingly “perceptive” people who see through your veil and dislike you for allowing your “self” to slip away into an endless existence of catering to the sensibilities of others. A Public Service Announcement to People Pleasers: Nobody pays your bills! Be yourself if you want to find people who LOVE you, not pity you. (I’m Justin Jones, and I approve of this message.)
