Every Day is “WIN”-WIN for Women In Network
A
t a time when LGBT Rights and empowerment are at the forefront of the national debate, one local organization has taken the reins to make empowerment more than a watchword. Since 1987, Women In Network (WIN) has been dedicated to building skills in personal and business development, leadership, and empowerment for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women (the “L-B-T” in LGBT). The non-profit group organizes business and professional networking events, advocacy efforts, health and educational programs, philanthropic and scholarship support, along with social and recreational events. All of these are devised with a goal that involves helping others and empowering themselves. “We started watching the show, ‘Extreme Couponing,’ and a group of us got the idea to work for a local non-profit,” recalls Julia Landis. “So we did our research.” That research led them to a strategy for benefitting those less fortunate, and having a great time in the process. “It’s pretty amazing if you get a local grocery store to have a buy-one-get-one special, and then you find a manufacturer’s coupon and match them up—all of a sudden, you are actually walking out with money in your hand,” Landis adds. “One of my favorites is CouponMom.com, but there are many out there that really can double or triple your buying power.” How does this great enthusiasm translate
24
|
guy magazine
into helping others? Landis explains: “A few months ago, we started a food drive for Poverello. We didn’t know that there are certain items that Poverello cannot, due to laws, provide for their clients. Things like barbeque sauce are considered a luxury, and therefore government money can’t purchase these. We found that we could purchase the barbeque sauce with our couponing, and got the price down to less than fifty cents per bottle. The first delivery, we took over 3,500 pounds of groceries to Poverello. Terry Sommerville, the food bank manager at Poverello, was nearly in tears, because he was able to give clients things that they would never be able to have.” As well as the homeless, WIN has a soft spot for kids. “Many people don’t realize that over 125,000 Broward County children can’t afford the basic supplies for school,” says Landis. In cooperation with the Pride Center, McDonalds, Auto Nation, Power 96 FM, Waste Management, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Broward County schools, the Creative Summer Art Academy, and the Museum of Art, the “Tools for Schools Broward” program collects school supplies for disadvantaged children. “Some of the things that we need most are glue sticks, crayons, pens and pencils, pink erasers, paper—just the simple things for kids to have for learning,” Landis says. “We have several drop off locations, including right here at the Pride Center at Equality Park [2040 North Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors], or people can go online and make a donation at browardedfoundation.net. Thanks to ‘Tools for Schools,’ Broward teachers from low income schools now have a chance to help their students to not just learn, but to excel.” For more information about Women In Network, visit womeninnetwork.com, or contact Landis at julia@lgbtcenters.org.

“GLEE” S4 Premiere to Feature “Call Me Maybe”
By DUNCAN ST. THIBAULT
TAYLOR SWIFT: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (From the LP “Red”)
T
he first single from Taylor Swift’s upcoming fourth studio album “Red” (October 22) was released last week. The 22-year-old singer says that “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” deals with the emotional rollercoaster of her very-public breakup experiences (although Joe Jonas swears [!] “It’s not about me.”). Her last album, “Speak Now” (2010), sold more than one million albums its first week of release. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a big departure from Swift’s normal country aesthetic, in favor of a complete pop makeover—largely thanks to producer/ co-writers Shellback and Max Martin. Swift’s country packaging was always wrapped in a light pop ribbon, and producer Martin—who worked with Avril Lavigne on four songs for “Goodbye Lullaby”—gives catchy pop hooks that make short work of the performer’s usual country vibe and depth. The brush-off she gives WHICHEVER ex she’s singing about has a bouncy flair that makes this breakup upbeat and looking forward to the future.

The rapper says he was aware that she had close female friendships—but didn’t know how close. “When you see two females together, you think, oh, they’re just girlfriends, they’re close,” 50 Cent said. “But, with my mom, the male was missing.” That Family Thing has been evident in Fitty’s public support for the coming out of openlygay musician Frank Ocean, and of his thumbsup for Prez. e are approaching the “official” end of summer, and if you have been putting off that big seasonal blowout-to-end-all-blowouts poolside but haven’t gotten around to it yet, now’s your chance. Although the fact that we live in South Florida means that—I mean, really—it’s summer practically all year long, the approach of Labor Day and “calendar Autumn” means that people start dressing less casually, and a lot of your peeps may be getting ready to put their best swimwear in mothballs. Here’s a chance for a last summer hurrah—before the weather turns room-temperature.

he cool thing about a pool party (other than— you know, the pool), is that it is one of the easiest gatherings you can assemble, both in terms of friends and the accoutrements. A checklist of things you should provide your guests includes sunscreen for those who may have forgotten to bring their own, areas of shade (with umbrellas if your pool area doesn’t have trees), enough chairs for everyone to have a place to sit (if you absolutely can’t get these, ask guests to bring their own when they RSVP), towels (as above for sunscreen and chairs), fun pool toys (beach balls, a volleyball and a net, supersoakers, etc.), and PLENTY OF ICE.

Drink Up, Me Hearties!
I
n our August 1 piece (“ADAM’S SUMMER MARGARITAS: Some-R-Margaritas, Some Aren’t”) we have some cool—and refreshing—recipes for Perfect Pool Party Potables. Along with Margaritas, classic frozen drinks like Daiquiris and Piña Coladas (or the variation that calls for vodka instead of rum, the “Chi Chi”) perfectly hit both the spot and the theme. Lemonade, iced tea (as well as the hybrid “Arnold Palmer,” which is probably about a halfcentury overdue for a name-freshening: How about the “Cousin Ira,” half-Cher, all-sweet?), and bottled water are all poolside must-haves.

FRESH FRUIT KEBABS AND DIP
Ingredients • 1/3 cup of sour cream • 1/3 cup of mayonnaise • ¼ cup of fresh basil, chopped • 2 tablespoons of fresh chives, chopped • 2 ¼ teaspoons of salt • ¼ teaspoon of black pepper • 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice • 1 ½ lb of large shrimp (16 to 20 per lb) in shell, peeled and de-veined • 1 (1-lb) firm ripe mango, peeled and cut into 1/3 inch cubes • 4 (10-inch) flour tortillas • 1 (6-oz) bunch of watercress, tough stems discarded
he menu should reflect the fact that it’s hot outside, and you don’t want your guests bloated before or during your poolside antics. Tortilla chips and a cool salsa (Ingredients: 6 tomatoes, 1 onion, 1 green pepper, 1 yellow pepper, 1 red pepper, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, plus 1 or 2 peeled, roasted, seeded, and minced jalapeños , to taste) are a great, filling appetizer, and Frozen Popsicles just SCREAM summer and swimming pools. Try these great eats on for poolside size:
• 2 bowls of fresh summer fruits, cubed. • Wooden skewers Sour Cream Dip • 2 cups of sour cream • 2/3 cup of brown sugar • 2 tablespoons of dark rum • 1 tablespoon of Grand Marnier • Combine ingredients, blending thoroughly. Serve chilled. Honey Fruit Dip • 1 8 oz package of cream cheese, softened • 1 teaspoon of lemon or lime juice • 3 to 4 tablespoons of honey • Beat cream cheese with juice. Sweeten to taste with honey. Serve chilled.
rap your lips around these delish Mango and Shrimp Wraps, cool tropical treats that go great with a frozen drink.
Pulse sour cream, mayonnaise, basil, chives, ¼ teaspoon of salt, and pepper in a blender until the herbs are finely chopped, and the mixture is pale green. Bring two quarts of water, lemon juice, and the remaining two teaspoons of salt to a boil in a three-quart saucepan. Poach shrimp, uncovered, at a bare simmer, until just cooked through, approximately three minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer shrimp to a bowl of ice and cold water, to stop cooking. Let shrimp chill in water for two minutes, then drain and pat dry. Coarsely chop the shrimp, then add to sour cream/mayo dressing, along with mango and stir well. Toast the tortillas one at a time directly on the burner (gas or electric) at medium high heat, turning them over and rotating with tongs, until they are puffed slightly and browned in spots, but still flexible, about 30 to 40 seconds. Place on a clean kitchen towel and stack, loosely wrapped in a towel. Divide the watercress among the tortillas, arranging it across the middle, then top with 1 ¼ cups of the mango and shrimp salad. Tuck in the ends of the wraps, and roll them up TIGHTLY to enclose the filling. Cut wraps in half, diagonally. Now, eat up and remember: NO RUNNING NEAR THE POOL! guymag.net

A Local Landmark on 2-Legs:
George Knittel,
Bartender of the Month
S
ee George Knittel’s face, and you instantly recognize him as one of South Florida’s iconic bartenders who continues to please crowds with a smile that is just as big as his heart. “I moved here 26 years ago, having grown up in Philly,” Knittel says. “My grandparents owned a bar, and I sort of grew up in the industry.” Like Woody Allen’s “Zelig,” Knittel has seen his share of landmark happenings. “I actually started bartending in the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel [in Philadelphia], which was where so many fell ill in 1976 to Legionnaires’ disease. I started working there once the complete remodeling took place,” Knittel adds. “I had always been ‘curious’ about being gay, but in the 1970s you just didn’t act on it,” Knittel recalls. “My first gay bartending job was at Steps in Philly, on Delancey Street, and I walked around with a tool belt around my waist for two months. “One man came up to me and asked if I was a bartender or a construction worker,” he remembers, laughing. “I did that job working Happy Hour for two years. Then a man by the name of Alan Kachin came to me and asked me to work for him in a new bar called Equus, and I worked for him for the next 10 years.” Equus became one of the city’s hottest disco night clubs of the 70s and 80s. “Kachin then moved,” to South Florida, Knittel recalls, “and opened Hombre in South Beach, and then later The Eagle in Fort Lauderdale, and we have been good friends ever since. My first bartending job here was at the Breakers Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, and I was there for five years.” Locals may remember the original Georgie’s, on West Sunrise Boulevard, in the location now occupied by Slammer. They may also recall seeing a familiar face slinging drinks behind the bar there. “I was at the original Georgie’s on Sunrise, along with entertainer Tony Griffin and the late Lee McCall. Following that stint, I opened Every Nook and Cranny, a restaurant, but after eight years I got the itch for bartending again,

so I went back to a little bar on Wilton Drive simply called the Martini Bar, and then over to the original Bill’s Filling Station on 13th Street.” His own personal “bar crawl” would lead him to Matty’s on the Drive, where friends and fans can now find him. “Now I feel like I am home at Matty’s,” he beams. Knittel’s signature cocktail is a “Goose Cosmo.” “Start by chilling the glass, and in a shaker, mix two-and-a-half ounces of Grey Goose vodka, a dash of Stoli Orange, a dash of Cointreau (triple sec), a dash of cranberry juice, and garnish with an orange slice. Try one!” Catch George Knittel weekends at Matty’s on the Drive, 2426 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, and tell him you heard about him and Matty’s in Guy Magazine.

78 Degree Spa: Soooo Right
I
s it going to be John, Gino, Michael, Paul, or Don? (Sounds a lot like the beginning of “Ghostbusters!”) Make no mistake, though, when you go to 78 Degree Spa, you won’t have to worry about ghosts. In fact, your biggest worry may be about getting addicted. After a day there, all you will want to do is curl up in a corner and realize you have just had the Day of your Life. For couples, 78 Degree has a great room just for you and your honey, in which to share a relaxing aromatherapy massage (on two tables), with two therapists in one room: You can just feel all of those tensions leaving. This is also a great treat for you and a friend to have a boys’ (or girls’) Jour de Spa—oui? Now, if you work out, try 78 Degree’s sports massage, a far more vigorous approach to massage, which also includes stretching, and supports a higher degree of physical training. While there, how about a soothing Herbal Wrap? This will pull impurities from the body—a really great way to pamper yourself, body and soul. In addition, they offer hair removal for eyebrows, ears, back, chest, and everywhere else you can imagine.

Dry and aching feet? Try an aromatherapy hand and foot massage, and add the heated paraffin treatment. There are just so many things to try at 78 Degree Spa. Owner John Pimenta has long been involved in the community, and is always onboard to assist the local charities in raising money. “That’s part of being in business,” Pimenta says, in his distinct New England accent. “You have to be involved. You have to be there and to give back, and that’s what we’ve done over the years.” Pimenta attributes his longevity in Wilton Manors to adaptability and being flexible to the changes in both the economy and the market. “Has it been tough? Sure, but that’s life and you just have to keep pushing on,” he says, philosophically. “I think that’s one of the reasons that we’re still here, you just have to keep looking forward,” Pimenta adds. He is also upbeat about what his clients have to say about 78 Degree Spa: “I’ve had massages all over the world, and this is the best massage I’ve ever received.” “I live in New York and travel a lot in my work. I’ve had massages in many places, but this is the best.” “I was considering surgery for my carpal tunnel syndrome, but my pain is gone, and what you’ve taught me will help keep it gone.” “The environment is so peaceful.” “My pain is gone—I’ll be back.” You see what I mean? Give your body a vacation from life, at 78 Degree Spa, 2153 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. For more information, visit 78degreespa.com, and tell John or any of his great team that you read about them in Guy Magazine.

PHILADELPHIA Brotherly Love, Steak Sandwiches, and Soft Pretzels
W
hen Philadelphia was nicknamed the City of Brotherly Love, they were originally speaking of Quakers, not gays. However, all that has changed within the past six years as this town of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Independence Hall the Betsy Ross House has evolved into a rather gay-hip collection of clubs, B&Bs, restaurants, and gyms. To keep your history straight and your nightlife gay, the first thing you need to know about Philly is that many of the yellow-brick roads here are cobblestone, particularly in the historical district located in the Olde City, a square mile officially bordered by Race, South, Sixth, and Front Streets—or the Delaware River if you’re reading your guide map and walk too far East. All the historical must-sees can easily be toured during a one-day outing, with locals dressed as town criers and the like to guide you down the appropriate alleys. Do not miss checking out this part of town, for there is something very humbling and essential in discovering the Birthplace of America for yourself. You don’t have to be gay to be proud in this section of town. For the real fun, travel toward Washington Square West, home to the gayborhood and, as you might expect, the nightlife—ranging from cultured to sleazy and all within easy walking distance. This is particularly true if you lodge the bod in a place called the Independent Hotel (1234 Locust St., 215-772-1440), a 24-room boutique hotel which is not only on the National Register of Historical Places, it’s been given a total fluff-and-fold for comfort and style with rooms starting at $239. The fitness center of choice is located nearby. More than just a workout gem, the 12th Street Gym (204 S 12th St., 215-985-4092) is 60,000 square feet of cruisy inspiration, with all the

expected equipment and more. For tips on form, check in with baby Joe Burke, our recommended personal trainer. For good local eats and plenty of it, try Lolita (106 S 13th St., 215-546-7100), owned by dolls and partners Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney. The ladies know their business and pack this place right out the front door. It’s a bring-your-own-tequila kinda place. They’ll supply the pitcher of freshsqueezed margarita mixes (watermelon and wild mint) and you supply the hootch, which is available a block away at Premium Collection Wine & Spirits (1218 Chestnut St., 215-560–4380). The girls also own Bindi (105 S 13th St., 215922-6061), the Indian restaurant across the street, as well as the one-stop-convenience-shop Grocery and homewares store Open House next door. After you roll out with full bellies and a smile on your lips, a wonderful local place to people-watch and experience Philly at its most literate is Giovanni’s Room (345 S 12th St., 215-9232960), the oldest gay bookstore in the country. This particular place has the distinction of having been a gay and lesbian refuge during a time when the LGBT community was not so Giovanni’s Room Gay Bookstore welcome in the Birthplace of America. Even if it didn’t have 7,000 books on its shelves—many of which you’ll find nowhere else—this bookstore is alive with our history. Get kissed by one of the staff—which, quite frankly is not so tough—and you’ll continue a love which began with Walt Whitman and was passed on to Edward Carpenter to E.M. Forster to Allen Ginsberg, then to Bern Boyle, one of the founders of Giovanni’s Room. Next week, we’ll give you the inside scoop on the real Philly nightlife, and the basement you won’t want to miss. Robert Elias Deaton is a world-traveling epicure who enjoys the finer things in life.

What’s Wrong With Prepaid?
I
n a tight-fisted economy, you would think that consumers of all stripes would look for the best bargain. One of the single-biggest monthly expenses for many people—up there with rent and, in the case of my bf, Proculus, tanning—is their cellphone bill. This is why I have always been shocked that prepaid phone plans—under which you pay full pop for your cellphone, but a lower monthly rate without the need for a contract—aren’t more popular. According to data from research firm Ovum (heh, “Ovum”) contract-free plans account for just 23 percent of U.S. wireless customers. The remaining 77 percent are locked into contracts, paying higher monthly fees. Ironically, prepaid phone plans are usually a better deal, enabling you to save hundreds of dollars of what you’d pay over the course of a two-year contract. Experts say that most people are blinded by the lump-sum cost of a phone, reflexively saying “Ohh-HellNah!” when they glimpse the $600 upfront price tag for a prepaid iPhone, choosing instead to pony-up $100 for a contract-plan-phone—and then overpaying through the nose. (This is the same formula that has kept credit card

companies—and loan sharks—in business for centuries.) Another reason for the lopsided numbers: The phone carriers WANT you on their contract plans. Postpaid plans account for huge revenues per user compared with prepaid customers. For example, even though the offer was introduced back in June, Sprint hasn’t yet begun marketing the iPhone for Virgin Mobile prepaid plans. That lackluster enthusiasm seemingly cuts both ways, with prepaid phone companies offering handsets that don’t exactly make you want to run out and buy one. It was only in the past few months that several popular Android models and the iPhone became available via prepaid carriers. Because a regional carrier like MetroPCS has a miniscule marketing budget compared to AT&T or Sprint, their cheaper plans aren’t as familiar to consumers, which factors into the anemic numbers. Research shows that more people will be buying into the prepaid philosophy as both their awareness of the savings and product availability grow. The question is: What are YOU waiting for?

Let Me Guess: You Can’t Find Your iPhone
A
s obsessed as are most of us—well, me anyway—with our smartphones and related OS technologies, it is <Insert Sounds of Maniacal Laughter> crazy mad— MAD, I tell you!—how often we misplace, lose, can’t-seem-to-locate, etc., etc., what has become for lots of people—well, me anyway—an extra appendage. The upwardsof-$500-investment you make in your iPhone, or other high-end cellphone, is a big-boy-toy that you need to take care of, and that includes knowing where it is at a given moment. Get it? Good. To set up Find My iPhone, you will need a free iCloud account (get it at icloud.com). For both the iPhone and iPad, open Settings, then tap iCloud, scroll down, and turn on the Find My iPhone app. Now, tap Settings (to go back to the main Settings screen), then General, and Passcode Lock, which will let you enable a password. (This part is critical to maintaining more than the security of your iPhone: Passwords prevent thieves from using the phone, or accessing your pictures, emails, etc.) Got it? Good. Now, what happens if you lose the iPhone? Log onto icloud.com from any computer. (You can likewise use the Find My iPhone app on a different iPad or iPhone.) Click Find My iPhone to see the phone’s location on a map. You can also get a satellite-photo view, to see its precise physical location. (If your phone happens to be offline, a check-box option allows an e-mail alert to notify you when the phone comes back online.) For most of us, misplacing our phone (or our keys, for that matter) takes place close to home, and the app takes this into account, transmitting an obnoxious sound for two minutes—even if the ringer is Muted, or if the phone is asleep. As another line of defense, you can enable a pop-up message in case you leave the phone in a cab, or someplace else an honest citizen may find it (this happened recently to a friend). The message can include

a backup phone number with which to reach you, offer a REWARD, or whatever. If you didn’t password-protect your phone, you can Lock it (to remotely password-protect it) or, as a Doomsday Scenario Last Option, click Remote Wipe, which will erase the contents of your phone, but will protect the privacy of your data treasures. Find My iPhone is less of a Divine Intervention than it is a Deux ex Machina. The app won’t work if the phone isn’t turned on. (If the phone is off or the battery is dead, it can’t “report” its location to you via the Internet.) Professional thieves know all about Find my iPhone, and are adept at wiping the program. Still, it’s a reliable way to help protect one of your most prized—or at least most obsessedover—possessions. Sleep well, Junior.

By ANDY KRESS

fighting back with nutrition
A
lcoholism is a chronic disorder, and a growing issue within the LGBT community. Since this is a progressive disease, there is a fine line between being a heavy drinker and a compulsive one—the textbook definition of an alcoholic. The World Health Organization has listed alcoholism as one of the three most deadly killer diseases of the 20th century.
Alcohol, by its very nature is foreign, since it is not a product found in nature. It results from decomposition of fruits, grains and vegetables, and as such belongs to a family of poisons. Ethyl alcohol, the main intoxicating ingredient in wine, beer, and distilled liquor is a toxic drug that depresses the brain and nervous system. Although alcohol is fattening, it isn’t a food and is not changed or digested in any way. It is quickly absorbed in the blood stream and then travels to every part of the body, adversely affecting vital organs like the brain and liver. There are a few tell tale signs of a true alcoholic, a puffy face and red blood-shot eyes among them. The alcoholic’s voice will be very hoarse and raspy, and they tend to have a rapid pulse, due to the alcohol’s thinning effects on the blood. Often irritable and over-emotional in their actions, many tend to be very suspicious of others. Bouts of delirium and black-outs of time are another chronic symptom. So, too, is repeated vomiting throughout the day. Since the true alcoholic would rather drink than eat, it is easy for them to become very emaciated, with their skin becoming dehydrated and wrinkled. Because alcoholism is principally a psychological disease, any treatment must be directed first toward behavior modification— including a diet that is alcohol-free. In its place, the drinking of orange juice multiple times a day serves three purposes: One, the habit of drinking is satisfied; two, the juice helps rehydrate the body; and three, orange juice provides needed vitamins and minerals. simple multivitamin taken with massive amounts of leafy vegetables are essential, as well, to provide fiber and reintroduce the stomach to processing solid food. Legumes, starches, pastas and other carbohydrates provide long-lasting energy between meals. Enriched cereals and breads fill the stomach and are a good source of foliate and thiamine. Poultry is low in saturated fats and is a good source of lean protein to help build and repair muscles that have been damaged through inactivity. Poultry is often mild in taste and easy to digest. Seafood is another protein that is lower in fats and cholesterols; this will help aid in the body’s muscle retention. Seafood is also loaded with many vitamins and minerals lost in the overconsumption of alcohol. Lean pork is another fine choice when fighting the effects of alcoholism. Pork has a variety of different vitamins and minerals than chicken or seafood, as well as being a good source of healthy protein. If you know or are related to an alcoholic, remember there is a good chance that they won’t be reading this article, since their word-mind association process is impaired by their disease. Share the information freely, knowing that you are helping to save someone’s life. You may even be saving lives more than you know, since drunk drivers are a major threat to innocent victims on our highways.
