The History of the

White Party In 1985, Health Crisis Network, a fledgling not-forprofit HIV/AIDS service organization asked a local successful gay businessman, Frank Wager, for help staging a fundraiser. The goal was to generate desperately needed funds to help combat a disease that was running rampant through the gay community. With this goal in mind, Frank and his committee of ten volunteers began working on “The White Party™” concept. From the beginning, the committee wanted the party to symbolize community solidarity in a way that was non-political and non-combative. White was chosen for this reason as well as for its purity and elegance. As the planning continued it became obvious that there were few venues in Dade County suitable for such an elegant event. Fellow committee member Jorge Suarez recommended Villa Vizcaya as a possibility since he was a member of The Vizcayans, a not-for-profit organization that helps raise funds for the continued restoration of the estate and its collections. For over 24 years, the Villa Vizcaya Museum and Gardens set the backdrop of this elegant annual fundraiser. In the fall of 2010, due to increasing rental costs, it was decided that the 26th Annual White Party Week™, “Cirque Du Monde,” would be the final party held at this historic location. The White Party™, the crown jewel of a week long series of fundraising events that make up the annual “White Party Week™,” continues to generate hundreds of thousand of dollars to benefit Care Resource, the result of a merger between Health Crisis Network and Community Research Initiative of South Florida. Care Resource offers their clients access to promising new drug therapies in addition to the vast array of programs and services Health Crisis Network had traditionally provided. The White Party™ will be held at the Miami Seaquariam this year. The White Party™ was created by a wonderful group of altruistic and compassionate people drawn together – responding to a dreadful disease that had caused tragic losses and much personal grief. With the to ever changing landscape of this pandemic, The White Party™ finds itself in the midst of change to fit today’s growing needs while catering to a much more diverse crowd. White Party Week™ appreciates your continued generosity and support and hopes that you will join them this year as they evolve, to celebrate life and to honor and remember those who have been lost to this terrible disease. 16 | jumponmarkslist.com 16 | jumponmarkslist.com

The Social Set

International Gay Power Couple In South Beach

By Mike Nelson Dane Steele Green is the gay-cation guru behind Steele Luxury Travel. Joshua Ingraham is a leading interior designer in New York. Together, they are “Joshy and Dane,” a power couple among the international gay social set. The pair trot the globe, attending all the most fabulous gay events including Sydney’s Mardi Gras, Vienna’s Life Ball, and Tel Aviv’s Pride. Their next stop is Miami’s White Party where they will turn Steele to Platinum at South Beach’s Z Hotel.

o

How did you meet? Joshua: We met on Fire Island, August 30th at 6:48pm. Dane loves to remember the exact time. Dane: We were standing across from each other and locked eyes. There was a pull that drew us together. We’ve been driving each other happily crazy ever since. What makes your relationship work? Dane: We share an obsession of airports, airplanes, and hotels; basically all things travel and design related. Joshua: We tend to fight like cats and dogs but also love each other immensely. What’s the best thing about dating an interior designer, Dane? Dane: When I go away on a business trip, I come home to find my apartment organized, painted, and adorned with fantastic design trinkets. The worst thing is that he tries to make me throw away the stuffed animals on my bed. What’s the best thing about dating a world traveler, Joshua? Joshua: Before I met Dane, I had never left the country! Dane has shown me the world in ways that I could not have dreamed of before. The experiences I’ve enjoyed from our many trips have brought my design to a whole new level. Is there a downside? Joshua: It can be hard to keep up with him. Dane is constantly on the go. A lot of our down time together is on an airplane, where cell phones don’t work and Dane is forced to sit in his assigned seat. Dane, as someone who’s been around the world, what do you love most about South Beach/Ft Lauderdale?

Dane: I love the relaxed vibe and culture; also, their proximity to New York. Joshua, from a design perspective, what are some of the most attractive locations in Miami? Joshua: The W South Beach and The Mondrian Hotel are two of my favorite chill out spots in Miami. I love their modern and timeless design. Now that NY has passed gay marriage, will any wedding bells be ringing soon? Dane: I don’t want to spoil any future surprises but Dane and I have always loved the idea of marriage and we are both anticipating our futures together. It would likely be one spectacular wedding! Joshua: It’s extremely top secret but it will include dance troops, gift bags, popular performers and many other surprises for our guests. Cross your fingers you make the guest list. Have you thought about joining forces to create destination gay weddings where Dane arranges the trip and Joshua designs the ceremony? Dane: The thought of working together makes us want to pull each other’s facial hair out. (Laughs) But, who knows what the future holds for us? We’ve always been able to spark creativity in each other and destination events could be a great new project for us. Thanksgiving weekend is this week, what are you most thankful for? Joshua: I’m thankful for the beautiful life I get to live, filled with love, good health, travel and of course, design. Dane: I am thankful I get the opportunity to discover the world we live in. Have you decided your New Years plans yet? Dane: Steele Luxury Travel is hosting our annual New Year’s trip to Rio and we’ll be there! travel By Paul Rubio The Many Sides of Bali Part II: The Rich Interior Found along the island’s east coast and deep in its interior, the area known as “Traditional Bali” captures the island’s timeless spirit, still flourishing in today’s globalized world and unwavering in its cultural foundations. It is here, far removed from the chaos of the modern world, where you’ll lose yourself in the heartfelt hospitality of daily village life, the rewarding treks through rice fields, the burgeoning indigenous arts and craft scene, the odalan ceremonies held at Bali’s “1000 temples” and the pilgrimages to reach them. This is the Bali of fairytales and coffee table books, a land of spiritual awakenings and an invitation to journey to a time bygone. Coastal brilliance notwithstanding, the country’s rich interior is the pinnacle of the island’s aesthetic and ethnic grandeur. The city of Ubud and its proximate villages showcase the island’s living culture, where eclectic artists interpret the modernization of traditional living, where esteemed Balinese architecture abounds, where village elders trek through the gates of mountaintop luxury hotels to fetch holy water from the temples below, and where the Agung River breathes life into all who grow around her. A seamless amalgamation of alternating levels of dense forest and rice terraces – an unwavering landscape of everlasting vertical and horizontal greens – this is the Bali of legends, the realization of wanderlust and life experience. Within this sphere of Zen, it is possible to reside either in the heart of the cultural action or on the periphery, engrossed in the natural environment. The centrally located, luxury boutique hotel, Uma Ubud (uma.ubud.como.bz), and the more lavish Amandari (amanresorts.com) lie in the epicenter of Ubud’s prolific arts scene. Both boast the full throttle Eat, Pray, LOVE Ubud experience and are a short drive from renowned yoga centers, cooking schools, and convivial villages where healers, wood carvers, and silversmiths carry on the customs of generations past. A bit further afield, the COMO Shambhala Estate (cse.como.bz ) is the evergreen of Ubud inspiration and enlightenment, providing breathtaking backdrops, utter luxury, and outlets for physical stimulation, combining for an end product of unparalleled mental invigoration. Organized as 3, 5, and 7-day wellness programs, the personal sojourn at COMO Shambhala Estate begins with a consultation from the in-house Aryuvedic doctor, who prepares a bespoke itinerary

for time spent at The Estate. Days alternate between spa treatments, hilltop yoga and Pilates classes, jungle treks, and unapologetic relaxation, interspersed by guiltless indulgence in innovative organic meals and revitalizing juices. The suggested structure leaves ample time for a cathartic journey of self, where getting lost around the 23-acre estate and exploring the natural spring pools hugging the mountain’s edge, delighting in the sounds and sights of nature at the riverbank, reflecting on personal achievement, or testing physical fitness at the bonafide “jungle gym” are all options. Accommodations are structured as five luxury “residences” and five “retreat villas,” with the full gamut of haute resort offerings showcased through individualistic motifs like fire, water, and earth. For example, Tejasuara or “Sound of Fire” is a residence where understated design flawlessly tempers the darkness of the dominant Sumba stone and black bamboo, illuminated by the fire pit that burns beside the sparkling infinity pool. Indeed, it seems ironic that an island celebrated for its coastal majesty boasts some of its greatest treasures inland. In fact, Bali’s fortunes are everywhere--superbly distributed over its vast volcanoes, lush mountains, and its remote and crowded beaches where timeless villages and show-stopping resorts co-exist in harmony. This multi-faceted island has evolved as a land of diverse escapism, ripe with endless opportunity for adventure, vacation, and self-reflection in the presence of living history and natural wonder. By Tom Bonanti

Bigger Beefier Biceps By Christmas! Over the past few weeks, I have received several requests from clients and avid readers of Mark Magazine and the Florida Agenda to write a column on how to get bigger biceps. Since biceps are the smallest muscles of the anterior upper body, they are the easiest to work and develop almost immediately. They are also a favorite to show off and flex, not that anyone I know would ever be into such a shallow display of vanity. Anyway, here’s the lowdown on how to get bulging beefier biceps by Christmas! First, if you want to put on size, do free-weight exercises. Using barbells, E-Z curl bars, and dumbbells will give you a better chance to take your biceps through their full range of motion and fill out the muscle bellies. Hit biceps twice a week employing three different exercises using 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. Second, I never work biceps on the same day that I work the back, because by the time you’ve really exhausted lats and traps, etc. you’re not going to give biceps your all. Try working shoulders with biceps because neither muscle group suffers with that combination. Third, make sure to lift using proper form as with training any muscle group, to prevent injury. Don’t try to lift too much weight or do too many reps. Fourth, stretching helps bring out the separation and detail in a muscle beside being great for your whole body. Stretch briefly before your workout, periodically between sets, and always afterward.

o

Here are four sure-fire bicep exercises. uStanding barbell curls are the king of all bicep-building exercises. With you feet hip width apart and your knees slightly bent, take a shoulder width grip on a barbell or E-Z curl bar and then fully extend both arms in front of you. Keep your abs tight and back straight. When you start the exercise use a hinge motion, keeping the areas from your shoulders to your elbows locked so that the only movement taking place is from your elbows to your wrists. Bring the weighted bar up to your chest, and then return the weight along the same path in one smooth, continuous motion. Perform this exercise without rocking or swinging your shoulders and back. This exercise is a sure way to take bi’s through their full range of motion. uAlternate dumbbell curls allow you to give each bicep its due. Perform the movement sitting erect on a bench and first curling one dumbbell up to your chin; then, as you lower it, curl the other 74 | jumponmarkslist.com

arm. Lower slowly and don’t swing the weights up with any added motion.

uPreacher or Scott curls are my favorite way to isolate bi’s. Adopt a position with your arms over a preacher (Scott) bench. Hold either a barbell or a pair of dumbbells. Curl up to the chin, and then lower slowly- without bouncing or jerking. uUnder-grip close-hand chin ups are a terrific biceps building exercise with a difference. Instead of the arm moving from the body, your body gets curled toward the arm. Grasp an overhead horizontal bar with an under grip so that your pinkies are 6-12 inches apart. Start from “dead hang” position with arms entirely straight, pull upwards until your chin is above the bar. There you have it--the ammo you need to load those guns to the max! Thinking about selling?

Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience:

Recently I decided to move my business and sell my home so I met with Rick Gibson. Rick sold me my home years ago but I was a bit concerned he may not have enough direct involvement. Ironically, of three people I called, one never called back, and the other suggested a very low price. When I called Rick, he answered the phone, remembered me precisely, and was there the next day. I knew I should list with him. That day I listed he had a virtual tour there that afternoon, and sold my home in a month for more than I thought possible. I honestly thought he was crazy for the price he suggested but he made it work. He was there all the way, and made it possible for me to buy a new home and exceed my goals in what could have been very stressful. I am so glad he was there for me, and if you want the best you should meet with him before you sell. - Robert Ricard, 2011
