Jim Ottaviani’s latest graphic novel tackles the strange and brilliant Alan Turing
Alan Turing died in 1954, yet he’s a thoroughly modern man,” says Jim Ottaviani, the author of The Imitation Game: Alan Turing Decoded, explaining the current cultural interest in the English mathematician. Ottaviani’s sprawling, 240page graphic novel, out March 22 from Abrams, is a unique addition to the diverse canon of work that’s recently celebrated the brilliant eccentric, most notable for cracking the German Enigma during WWII. Within the past five years Turing’s life has been portrayed through a musical written by the Pet Shop Boys, an opera by the American Lyric Theater, and most famously, the 2014 blockbuster staring Benedict Cumberbatch. While the motion picture shares the same name as Ottaviani’s book—he sold the title back in 2009, Arnold Murra, which would a reference to a test that Turing proposed—the tragically lead to the English court author is quick to separate his graphic novel from charging Turing with gross indecency. the movie. Who Let The "Catwalk" Out Of The Bag? BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
W
hen the Florida House Queens said they wanted to compete with the undisputed heavyweight ballroom destinations (New York and Atlanta, Georgia) they weren’t playing. They put their money where their mouths is and began to walk the walk by hosting well-received balls in which established houses and ballroom queens from all over the nation and beyond came to earn the coveted trophies and of course bragging rights. But the Florida House Queens didn’t stop there. Towards the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015 they stepped it up a notch from the occasional balls dispersed throughout the year to having a recurring ball every single month. It was the monthly event that all the local houses and 007s (someone who walks balls but aren’t associated with a house) frequented to get in some practice and show off their skills. Catwalk: A Night of Vogue became South Florida’s place to be for everything ballroom with an extra flair of fashion thrown into the mix. Every month the Catwalk was building in notoriety but when the lead promoter moved to New York the extravaganza cease to exist as a
monthly affair. And Florida was back to having only it’s occasional balls. Are you ready for the good news, Catwalk is back and with a vengeance. On Sunday, March 20, Catwalk: A Night of Vogue will reintroduce itself as an official ballroom affair. There will be categories, prizes and legendary house members as judges like the FL Icon Father Angel Infiniti, Trigga Ebony and FL Legendary Mother Sierra Mizrahi – just to name a few. There are five open-to-all (OTA) categories in total with cash prizes ranging from $150 to $50 and a bottle for the winner of OTA Best Dressed. Four DJs will rotate on the turntables and Willow Mizrahi will MC the night with hosts Euthanasia and Sabel. It’s going to be a night to remember. WHAT’S Facebook Emojis Go Gay We must admit we are "living" for the new Facebook emojis but we couldn’t help but think, “What if the new emojis were created by gay men?” So we went to work rewording the new emojis to reflect the sayings that are part of every fierce queen’s vocabulary because gay slang is on the tip of everyone’s tongue nowadays.
There’s nothing “like” a good “Yasss” to express how you feel.
18
You have to “love” when something is that “Sickenin.”
A good “Kiki” never fails to give you a great “haha” moment.
When that “wow” moment just has you “Gaggin.”
“Trade” keeps you smiling from earto-ear.
People always get “angry” at the “Shade” of it all.

WHAT’S MUSIC
RAPPER J. TYLER THE ATLANTA BASED GAY RAPPER PERFORMS THIS WEEKEND AT THE MANOR. BY ALEXANDER KACALA
J
. Tyler has something to say. The Atlanta based gay rapper is currently reigning as the Best Gay Musician of Atlanta by the readers of GA Voice. A frequent performer in the nightlight scene there, he is known for his quick-witted and fast-paced lyrics and unique delivery and flow. On Friday, March 28, he is returning to The Manor to perform. We had the opportunity to chat with the soon to be 23 year old about inspiration, protecting his monster, and what he loves about South Florida. ALEXANDER KACALA: Tell our readers how you got involved with rap? J. TYLER: I started rapping just for fun. I was a senior in high school and it was popular to learn Busta Rhymes' verse in "Look At Me Now". I was like the only white person to learn the verse. When I rapped it in class one day, this one girl told me that I would never be a rapper. Not that it hurt me, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. I went home and decided to write my own verse. From there, I fell in love with the art of just lyrically flowing. It felt free and natural. From there, I practiced and practiced until I got better.
AK: What do you love about South Florida and performing here? JT: South Florida is amazing. Cute weather. Cute people. It's by the beach. Should I keep going? I think it's very different from what I'm used to in Atlanta. Two different environments in one community. I love experiencing it. It always gives me hope that Atlanta can always work to improve our local community.
AK: Who are your major influences right now and why? JT: I'd be lying if I didn't say that my major influence has always been Nicki Minaj. I have been attracted to her delivery and her rhyme scheme. It's so eclectic and can change on a dime. I love that about her.
AK: What is the best or most unique thing about the LGBT community in Atlanta? JT: I would say the best thing is that there are all walks of life here in Atlanta. We have every type of person from groups of twinks to lesbians and transgender beauties, and everything else in between. And it's always cool to see us all come together for a cause. Plus, our drag scene is a contender for the best. Why do you think RuPaul keeps looking out for us? Phoenix, Mariah, Sonique, Violet Chachki, and now Dax Exclamationpoint. There's a reason! Atlanta offers some of the best drag!
AK: What is Protect Your Monster and what is some of the work you have done with them? JT: Protect Your Monster is a company based here in Atlanta that brings awareness to the issue of HIV/AIDS. Our whole goal is to "protect our monster" from contracting these viruses and shedding light on taking preventative measures to keep you and your "monster" safe.
AK: What is next for you? JT: Well, you already know I'll be performing at The Manor this coming Friday. I'm so excited to be back! Currently, I'm working on some original music and some new features on upcoming artists' songs. My goal is to just ‘werk’! This rap career is my dream and my passion and I'm so fortunate to share it with the world.

Has Caitlyn Jenner Lost Her LGBT Love? BY DOMINIC PRESTON
I
t’s easy to forget now that it was less than a year ago that we welcomed Caitlyn Jenner to the LGBT world, celebrating her Vanity Fair cover story, praising her bravery, and hoping she’d help usher in a new era of trans acceptance. Now, just nine months later, her name is more likely to be met with derision than admiration from many LGBT people and allies. People who supported the star when she came out have turned on her as they realized that her new life hasn’t brought with it new politics, that despite what seemed to be well-intentioned efforts, she remains hopelessly out of touch with the concerns of the rest of the LGBT community. Jenner never shied away from her Republican politics, even as they made her the target of protests, but this election cycle has revealed just how out of step she is with the majority of LGBT voters. First, she admitted that she liked Ted Cruz, and hoped that she could be his “trans ambassador” in the White House – though did at least admit that he was “probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues.” The second season premiere of I Am Cait continued the trend, as she turned on Hillary Clinton, who she said “couldn’t care less about women.” Things only got worse in last night’s episode, as she called Clinton “a fucking liar” and a “political hack.” Who did she like more at the time? Well, none other than one Donald Trump. “I think he’d be very good for women’s issues,” Cait said. “I don’t think he’s out there to destroy women or do any of that kinda stuff.” While Jenner certainly has the right to whatever political views she wants, it’s easy to see how hers might alienate her from her LGBT brethren. Still, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?
22
Well, not according to I Am Cait’s ratings. The second season premiere returned to a series low of 745,000 viewers, down by more than 500,000 from last year’s season finale, and more than 2 million below the series premiere. Those numbers have already started speculation that this season will be the show’s last, and its ratings will be under serious scrutiny going forwards. The problems go beyond her ratings, too. When it was announced that she would be the new face of H&M Sports there were immediate calls for a boycott of the brand. As the world’s most prominent trans figure, Jenner no doubt seems a quick way for major brands to establish LGBT support, but that won’t stay the case if she continues to drain LGBT support and her endorsement begins to look toxic. Last year Jenner was quick to own up to her gaffes, admitting that she was still learning about trans life and the LGBT world. That excuse has worn thin for many though, as it looks like her political beliefs are here to stay. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, argues that we might just have to get used to it. “Trans people need to buckle up,” she said. “With all the folks who will be coming out in the next few years, you’re not going to agree with all of them.”

HE'S THAT GUY
BY ALEXANDER KACALA
G
uy Scheiman is one of the most successful DJs and producers on the international club scene, with bookings that span the globe and official remixes for some of the world’s biggest stars. On March 19, Scheiman returns to The Manor for his second set there this year, quickly becoming one of the venue’s hottest acts. Based in Tel Aviv, Scheiman is known for his high-energy sound that combines house, progressive, tribal and tech with strong melodies and memorable vocals. His live sets feature strong grooves and powerful bass-lines that ignite his dance floors and create euphoric experiences. “I have been DJing for about 12 years,” Scheiman told us over the phone. “Since I was 23, I started out at the local clubs and bars here in Tel Aviv. General, not just gay. Then I
24
started to produce my own music. Back then that was the ticket to get more gigs and perform abroad.” Scheiman’s first release of original music was in 2007 with the track “Tribal Rush.” “Passion for music and the will to create my own things is what drove me,” he said. “I didn’t just want to spin other people’s music. I wanted to create my own.” Since then, his original productions stand out as massive club anthems that combine his love for high-energy beats with passionate melodies and memorable breaks. He also has some impressive official remixes for A-List stars (even Cher) under his belt as well. Some of his most popular remixes include Lady Gaga’s “Applause”, Rihanna’s “What Now” and “Anything Can Happen” by Ellie Goulding.
ON THE COVER
“Music is like fashion. It goes in rotations and goes in circles." - GUY SCHEIMAN
“I am very drawn to the singers with big vocals like Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and of course Lady Gaga. She is my all time favorite. I am talking about the time when doing an official remix was very popular. And we were actually getting paid and well. The scene is now very different. “
“Music is like fashion. It goes in rotations and goes in circles. Round and round and round. You can’t invent the wheel - it is just moving in a circle.
Now, Scheiman is more focused on his own label.
“Trance has made a big comeback and is very in right now as well,” he adds. “A lot of new trance samples have come out which has given circuit new life. Circuit has a lot of trance. Big base. Bigger melodies.”
“In the last year I have focused more on my own things. I opened my own label last year. I pretty much pulled away from those remixes because the fees aren’t as much as they use to be and you pretty much have to do them for free. I have people now remix my songs for my label. I am focusing on my own things. This was the next step for me.”
Part of his dedication to pushing the music scene forward is related to his community in Tel Aviv. “It is in our education to always break the boundaries - to go further. Try to be at the top of our game. We always try to make everything the best we can. It is because of this area and the climate that it is fast and everything is now.”
He also takes the time out his busy schedule to mentor up and coming producers on the scene. “I tend to listen to what is going on, who is putting what out – I follow the young producers, they send me their stuff I give them my tips – something I didn’t get. I give them guidance because I want to see them progress and get better. And some of them are doing so well, they are getting more work than me!”
What does he think about The Manor? “It’s an awesome club with great lights and sound. The promoter is super sweet and he is very into promoting the venue and he has put a lot of effort into it. I use to do parties myself in Tel Aviv so I know how hard it can be to promote.”
Right now, Scheiman cites the South American sound as a huge influence on the America’s music scene. “The Brazilian DJ influence is hitting the USA and dominating. From where I see it - it is more upbeat, it is faster, though the sounds are more or less in the same family. You still have the old-fashioned sounds and melodies but the American producers have adapted to the worldwide sound. “
Now to the personal stuff. Is the sexy Scheiman single or taken? Single. And he blames it on his busy work schedule. “I am very busy. I mean I do have some people working for me but I still have to manage them. I do a lot of networking. I am working from morning to night. It is very hard especially when you travel and all of that. It is not easy but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking.” Who knows boys? Maybe he will find what he is looking for here.

DELAUNCE JACKSON Stomp The Musical Is Here BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

BRIEF ENCOUNTER
S
TOMP IS ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING OFF BROADWAY SHOWS THAT HAVE BEEN ENTERTAINING AUDIENCES EVERYWHERE FROM THE UNITED STATES TO EUROPE SINCE THE MID 90S. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT, IT IS WELL WORTH THE TICKET. FORGET THE TYPICAL SONG AND DANCE; THIS ENDURING MUSICAL WILL GIVE YOU A SHOW YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE. WE CAUGHT UP WITH STOMP PERFORMER DELAUNCE JACKSON TO GET A LITTLE MORE INSIGHT ABOUT THE SHOW AS HE AND THE REST OF THE CAST MAKE THEIR WAY DOWN TO LAUDERHILL FOR THE MARCH 19-20 SHOW.
BAPTISTE: What is the storyline of the musical? JACKSON: The premise is something from nothing. You watch our characters go through different scenes where there are different objects. Objects you would see in your everyday life like a grocery store cart, pieces of trash or a bag just floating around. You see the characters come into contact with these items and each other. We use these items to communicate to each other our character’s emotions or their relationships as the show progresses. The full message of the show is the universality of music and how you can communicate to one other through the creativity of music. BAPTISTE: Is there are verbal exchange between characters? JACKSON: It’s basically a non-verbal musical. There are no words in the show at all, yet the show is still completely understandable. We interact with each other through music and body language. It’s very surprising to people when they come. They expect it to be a musical with singing and dancing. They’re amazed that just through music they are able to understand the characters and what’s going on because each character does have a different persona, which contributes to the show in a different way. BAPTISTE: So the only audio from the show is through instruments? JACKSON: Whether it’s beating on things, stretching or crackling things and using our own body we make music out of everything. There’s a particular piece called hands and feet where we make all the music using just our hands and feet by
clapping and stomping. It’s body percussion. There’s a scene where we even use grocery bags to make music. BAPTISTE: How are the acoustics, does it have to be extremely quiet to here the music made from the different items? JACKSON: We have a phenomenal audio technician who installs and manages up to 78 microphones that are built into the stage. You can literally hear a piece of newspaper being torn on the stage and a matchstick dropped on the ground. The audience is given a window into this unusual world where they experience these eight people express themselves through music. BAPTISTE: How do people react to the unique concept of the musical? JACKSON: As you go through the experience there is never a moment when you will be bored or dull. What I can say is that you will never look at the world the same. It makes the ordinary extraordinary. People are ultimately inspired because the items we use are things that are around them and in their environment. The most rewarding part is seeing the children banging on the floor and the windows and clapping their hands while they leave the theater. It really inspires them and that is the most rewarding part for me.
Come out and enjoy the show for yourself starting March 19 – 20 in Lauderhill at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (3800 NW 11th Place Lauderhill, FL 33313). Visit the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center website at lpacfl.com to purchase tickets.

Things I Learned at the Adam Lambert Concert BY ALEXANDER KACALA
H
ere are seven things we learned from Lambert’s show at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Hollywood this past weekend.
PHOTOS OF ADAM BY RALPH NOTARO/SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO
7. ALEX NEWELL CLAIMS TO BE THE LONG LOST SIBLING OF BEYONCÉ
40
Opener Alex Newell tore through his impressive vocals phenomenally. The former Glee star had great banter with the audience, getting them pumped for the headliner. At one point, he got “personal” with the audience claiming to be the long lost sibling of Beyoncé Knowles. I don’t think we need a paternity to test the validity of that false statement. But all in all, the gender barrier breaking vocalist performed energetically, proving that his fifteen minutes of fame are only the beginning of a long career ahead.
6. HARD ROCK IS DISNEY FOR ADULTS
When we parked on the fourth floor of a garage, my date and I overlooked the expanse of land below that reminded us both of Disney. Well, Disney for adults. We walked around the manufactured streets observing lots of watering hotels, gaming tables, tattoo parlors, and spots to grab some grub. True – you can tell the venue is usually full of straight people who probably support Trump. But tonight was an exception because of the Lambert concert. There were gaggles of gays everywhere, making the experience a lot more comfortable. Regardless, if you are into the casino vibe
ENTERTAINMENT Toned down since his early days, Lambert’s is still flamboyant and ostentatious.
2. HE IS NOT A TALKER
and enjoy having a drink outside – I would recommend the Hard Rock as a possible nightlife destination.
5. MIDDLE AGED STRAIGHT PEOPLE LOVE HIM
Instantly, my date and I were amazed at the diverse and wide range of people walking into the theatre for Lambert. From families to 20-something gays wearing too much eyeliner and vests, there was every type of Floridian there. Surprisingly, the majority were middle aged straight people. Later, I realized the esteem of Lambert to this audience. At times, he and his band channeled Aerosmith or Bon Jovi – providing an arena rock ambiance to the night bringing Stacey the 47 year old hair stylist next to me back to her teen years.
4. HE KNOWS HOW TO PICK A COVER
The first thing I wondered when we sat down for the show was what covers he would do. When I saw Ariana Grande live, she did a mash up of “Vogue” with “I’m Every Woman.” How epic is that? Here, Lambert did not disappoint. Mid way through, he sang “Mad World” – the haunting ballad originally sung by Gary Jules later on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Later, he paid tribute to the late Bowie with a praiseworthy rendition of “Let’s Dance.”
Lambert only addressed the audience twice. The first time, he previously thanked the audience for their support and reminded us that this was his second appearance at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. He also mentioned something about "popping cherries" followed by a tongue in cheek giggle. Later, he spoke about the importance of realizing we are all more alike than different. “We're all human beings. And you know what? We all got hearts. They're the same damn organ and they feel a lot of the same shit and that's what I love. I love that music can connect us and bring us together. I know it’s idealistic but I’m a pop a star so that’s my gig.” Cheesy but at least he admitted to being super extra so I can totally respect that. It also may be a lesson we need to hear right now in our country.
1. HE CAN SING – AND BODY ROLL WITH THE BEST OF US
Lambert vocals were off the charts explosive. One of the first songs he performed was his recent hit “Ghost Town.” Not only did Lambert show his vocal chops, he also moved his body to some sexy choreo proving he can body roll with the best of us. He belted out his most popular song, "Whataya Want From Me” and featured newer singles "Another Lonely Night" and "The Original High.” But, my favorite was his finale rendition of “If I Had You,” a song I forgot was the soundtrack to a lot of my pre-gaming parties during my early 20’s. All in all, Lambert gave us a gay night out proving he will always be our queer idol.
3. THE BOY KNOWS HOW TO DO A COSTUME CHANGE
The singer’s set wasn’t that long – but he managed to do three costume changes during it. Starting off the show in a modern athleisure look with glitter boots, he then changed into a very 80’s Miami vice all white suit look. His final, and possibly most ostentations, was a glitter camouflage outfit.

Your "3rd Eye" Is Showing BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

NIGHTLIFE
3
rd Eye has transformed the gay nightlife scene in South Beach like no other club has done in the past. Hands down, the new raging night is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before in the gay South Florida club scene. If we were to describe it in one sentence, it would go something like this – it’s like a little slice of the Big Apple dipped in the sweet nectar of South Beach. But one sentence just doesn’t do the nightclub justice because everything about the new venue is unique and over-the-top starting with the venue space. How many basement clubs do you know exist in Miami? Well, now you know one. 3rd Eye is hosted in the FDR underground nightclub of the gorgeous Delano Hotel. The journey to the basement club is an essential part of the experience. Just pulling up to the regal hotel as the fivestory-high white sheer curtains bellow in the wind from the ocean breeze is enough for you to know that it’s going to be an epic night. Hand your keys to the valet and then mossy down the side of the building to enter into the perfectly manicured backyard capped off with a stunning ocean view. Once you have taken it all in, the true moment has arrived as you step foot in FDR to experience all of 3rd Eye’s grander. Everything is esthetically
pleasing from the banquette seating and differing wall finishes to the array of people and fashion that give it a New York touch. 3rd Eye represents a sea of the ordinary to high fashion, Avant-garde. And everyone is mingling with everyone. No tension, just pure fun with thumping music that never seems to skip a beat as the DJ plays back to back tracks of mixed genres that seamless blend into one another. It’s not unusual at 3rd Eye to see someone twerking it to Beyoncé in haute couture fashion. Or a seemingly straight hunk dancing side-by-side with a drag queen. Even the sexy bottle service girls get in on the fun as they don stiletto heels and skintight bikini bodysuits. “At some point the Miami gay scene just stopped being exciting,” said Ernesto Arambatzis, 3rd Eye’s host and creator. “I wanted to recreate it with a new and fresh take.” Experience 3rd Eye for yourself every Friday from 10:00 pm to 3:00 am. Entry is free. 3RD EYE AT FDR (DELANO HOTEL) 1685 COLLINS AVENUE MIAMI BEACH, FL 33139

FITNESS:
Machines or Free Weights? BY TOM BONANTI

FITNESS
O
ne question I am constantly asked is, “Which gives you a better workout- machines or free weights?” I am without a doubt a big advocate of using free weights- barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells, cables- as the basis of every resistance training program. Here are several reasons why I feel this way: Free weights are more versatile than machines in that they allow for more variations in lifting patterns. Standing, with your feet spread apart at shoulder width, back straight and head looking straight ahead is the preferred stance when lifting weights. When you adhere to proper form while training with weights you are more effective in developing the smaller synergistic (helping) muscles and stabilizer muscles while you are targeting a muscle group. For example, when you perform a standing barbell biceps curl, you are also working core muscles and deltoids as they stabilize you and assist the biceps with the motion. Free weights are versatile and convenient. You can easily grab two 30 lb. dumbbells and do three sets of curls for biceps and then move a few inches down the rack and do triceps kickbacks with the 25’s. Implementing techniques like supersets (working two opposing muscle groups at the same time) and compound sets (using two or three exercises for the same muscle group until fatigue) are no problem when you’re pumping free weights. Power is improved more efficiently through the use of free weights. According to The International Sports Sciences Association, other key components of fitness including lifting for size, improving balance and flexibility, reducing body fat and muscle toning are all achieved more efficiently through the use of few weights. Here are some disadvantages to free weights. Dumbbells and barbells are sometimes clunky and have to be maintained and re racked. And if you’re working out at home, there’s the whole issue of storage. Don’t forget that as you progress
with free weights and lift heavier amounts you may need a workout partner to spot you for safety. All this being said, I’m not bad mouthing machines! They have their place and they can be a useful addition to your workout: The number one advantage of machines is that you can’t drop them! They have the edge on safety provided you know how and what they are working for you. Machines can help you isolate a muscle group. Some machines, like the pec deck for the pectoralis major or the seated leg extension machine for quadriceps, are more efficient in isolating the muscle group. For group use, some machines are better in terms of space utilization. A case in point, one jaunt around the Universal machine and you can practically get a full body workout in no time. The disadvantages of machines are many. Most machines are very large to store, extremely pricey and tend to isolate only one muscle or muscle group at a time. The majority of these muscle building contraptions are built to serve an average sized person. Very short or very tall people find it impossible to use many of the machines currently on the market. In my opinion, an ideal training program can incorporate both free weights and machines in order to elicit the best response in muscles and joints. You won’t get bored if you shake things up with the right combo of weights and machines!

Travel Apps You Need to Download Now Before venturing up in the sky, download these four travel apps. BY ALEXANDER KACALA

TRAVEL MISTER BnB
SCRUFF
After a slightly uncomfortable and homophobic experience, Matthieu Jost decided there was a need for a shortterm rental service by and for gay men. So misterbnb was born. Connecting the global gay community, misterbnb was named the “gay Airbnb” by Forbes. The site serves as a catalyst for the gay community to connect in real life, becoming a response for the strong demand for collaborative tourism in the booming industry of LGBT travel. Gay couple and bloggers ‘Two Bad Tourists’ love the site that also has a well-designed mobile app available for download. On their informative blog, they write, “Understanding a city’s gay scene is much more easily done with the help of a local and apartment sharing is one of the best ways to meet someone living in the city who knows the best insider advice. misterbnb has become the #1 gay hotelier in the world with more than 30,000 hosts in over 130 countries.”
Ok. So maybe it’s not solely a travel app. But since they added their new Venture feature, Scruff has totally changed the game when it comes to gay travel. “The biggest new feature of Scruff 5 is Scruff Venture,” Scruff founder Johnny Skandros told us late last year. “We’ve known for some time that our members use Scruff to get advice on where to go and what to do while traveling. Scruff Venture reinvents gay travel by making it easier than ever to connect with locals and fellow travelers in destinations around the world. In addition to viewing who is local to and who is (or will be) visiting a given city, you’ll also be able to see what events are coming up (and who’ll be there), as well as Airbnb and VRBO room listings by other Scruff members.” Scruff also struck a partnership with ILGA – International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association – the world federation of national and local organizations dedicated to achieving equal rights for LGBTI people. With their support and resources, Scruff implemented a new Travel Alert feature for members who visit countries where samesex acts are criminalized, notifying of them of these laws when they sign on to get off.
HOPPER Hopper is the award-winning mobile app that doesn't just let you book flights from your phone: it also tells you when is the best time to buy. Hopper has been named one of the best apps of 2015 by Apple, Buzzfeed, Vogue, Tech Insider, New York Times, and TIME. Booking with Hopper is quick, easy, and secure. With Hopper, the idea is that you can monitor a particular route continuously using its “Watch a Trip” feature, which gives you a better chance at catching a better fare. When the fare drops, Hopper alerts you with a push notification, which can also inform you if the price isn’t likely to fall further. It can notify you if fares are about to increase, too. Giving you an opportunity to book that flight to Dubai before it gets too steep. For the service that can end up saving you a bundle on a ticket, Hopper just charges $5 per booking. Totally worth it. The design is sleek, sophisticated and user friendly – making this app a must.
HOTELTONIGHT Missed your flight and need to stay an extra night? Or stressed at work and need to take a staycation? Hotel Tonight offers you last-minute discounts for rooms that hotels would not otherwise be able to fill - well, um, tonight. Or tomorrow, but that prior planning will cost you. Hotel Tonight allows for spontaneity, but you can also find rooms in a variety of hotels – from basic to bougie – for reasonable rates. It also makes it easy to cope with the unexpected, such as flight cancelations, or missing the last ferry to Fire Island. Not that that’s ever happened of course. The app is also really trying to court us gays, popping up every time I try to sign-in to Grindr. Makes sense. There is no better way to ‘host’ than at a ritzy hotel with clean sheets and a cleaner bathroom.

DINING Modern Japanese style meets bold flavors at Seminole Hard Rock. BY ALEXANDER KACALA
K
uro at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is the perfect destination for a special date night or just a night out with boys. The modern style Japanese restaurant features contemporary dishes using both locally sourced and imported ingredients directly from Japan. Led by Executive Chef Alex Becker (formerly of Nobu) and Executive Sushi Chef Shuji Hiyakawa (protégé of Iron Chef Morimoto), menu items boast bold and complex flavors that are balanced and harmonious, and are designed with sharing in mind. The immaculate and expansive Japanese eatery overlooks the resort's pool and there are lots of different areas to enjoy the kitchen’s offerings. You can choose to sit in the spacious dining room or at the chef’s table. There are also two highly coveted tables outside you have to reserve far in advance to snag. We opted for the sushi bar, where we had a front row seat to the many sushi masters preparing our rolls. The cocktail list is an appropriate place to start your night. Sweet, sour, umami (pleasantly savory), bitter and salty are the five categories for cocktails. Kuro’s menu is designed to cater to your individual palate and meant to explore the five categories of flavor. Each cocktail ($13) represents a Japanese number and is phonetically fun to say. For food, my date and I ordered two items from the Tempura section of the menu. My date is vegetarian and there were three options for him to choose – corn kakiage ($14), maitake mushrooms ($12), and seasonal vegetables ($11). Our server recommended the corn kakiage. Kakiage is a type of tempura made with mixed vegetable strips, such as onion, carrot, and burdock, and sometimes including shrimp or squid, which are deepfried as small round fritters. Using locally sourced sweet corn, the dish came out as these fried balls with a dry seasoning called
furikake on top. A classic tempura dipping sauce was on the side. This was delicious. I went for something more traditional for my tempura, ordering the shrimp version ($16) of the classic Japanese starter. This came out in a large portion that was more American in taste, with key lime to garnish and a garlic aioli to dip. I asked for something spicy to accompany it as well, and our server brought out Kuro’s version of siracha - the perfect pairing for me. Next, we ordered some sushi. My date went for some basic vegetables roles while I opted for the special House Special ($15). This roll replaces rice with thinly sliced cucumber with three types of fish inside. It was light and refreshing, the perfect pairing to a hot Florida night. We also enjoyed the Japanese wagyu beef. Wagyu or Japanese cow is any of several breeds of cattle, the most desired of which is genetically predisposed to intense marbling and to producing a high percentage of oleaginous unsaturated fat. The meat from such wagyu cattle is known for its quality, and commands a high price. So don’t be surprised that it is priced at $20 an ounce with a three-ounce minimum per order. The thinly sliced wagyu beef is beautifully served raw on a huge board with all the seasonings, fixing and sides. In the middle is a round hot stone to cook your own meat to your desired temperature. This is a really fun dining experience that makes a night out extra special. KURO SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL AND CASINO ONE SEMINOLE WAY, HOLLYWOOD, FL 33314 800-937-0010 $65-$85 PER PERSON

FINERY Corey Selene at 3rd Eye Friday Nights at the Delano Sobe BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
WHO INSPIRED YOUR LOOK? All my outfits are from the creativity of my husband, Max Selene. I strive to be at his level of fierceness. DO YOU’LL MAKE YOUR OWN OUTFITS? Most are altered by us - the glue gun is our best friend. WOULD YOU WEAR YOUR OUTFIT IN PUBLIC, LETS SAY TO THE GROCERY STORE PERHAPS OR IS IT FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS? For special occasions, I want the world to automatically say, "oh, that must be Max's husband" or "he must be a Selene" when they see me dressed. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO KEEPING YOU HAIR “HOLD HIGH?” Moco de Gorilla AND, most importantly, Aquanet hairspray. HOW WELL IS YOUR BREATHING RIGHT NOW WITH THAT CORSET ON? There's a tactic with corsets. Tighten the waist but keep the top lose - that's how you breathe.
