COMMENT OF THE WEEK:

PHOTO CREDITS: CHAD BATKA (Rosie O’Donnell)

“Cynthia, her name was, and she came once to visit my aunt in New York on holiday,” Gloria Vanderbilt, 91, said. “We had this sort of lesbian relationship, and it felt so great.”

Did RuPaul go gay for play with Steve Grande after resolving his mommy issues on Broadway? GAY FOR PLAY This brand-new game show is done the Logo way. Host RuPaul and an endless parade of celebrity guests—Kelly Osbourne, Ross Mathews, Michelle Visage—will help contestants answer pop culture trivia. It’s like Hollywood Squares-meets-Match Game, but somehow even gayer! (Monday, April 11, Logo) START YOUR ENGINES Speaking of RuPaul, it’s time to get your shit together and rev up those engines. Ru Paul’s Drag Race announced that casting for season nine has begun. Go to rpdrcasting.com to get all the details. DON’T LOOK Steve Grand and Eli Lieb have joined forces for the emotive new duet "Look Away," a big moody breakup ballad that sees both singers on top form. The video, released last week, is a simple affair, showcasing the pair’s vocals and giving a few behind-the-scenes looks at the recording process. Of course, this

also means that Lieb is apparently back on the market. NOTHING LEFT UNSAID Not many mothers and sons get to resolve their issues in a fancy HBO doc—nor would they want to—but that’s exactly what Anderson Cooper and 92-yearold mother Gloria Vanderbilt do here. The sleek documentary went down a storm at Sundance earlier this year, and now it’s your chance to see it. (Saturday, April 9, HBO) YOU CAN PRINT THAT Rosie O’Donnell is done with marriage. The former View host was uncharacteristically quiet after signing a divorce deal with her second wife, Michelle Rounds, on Thursday. “She’s never getting married again, you can print that,” O’Donnell said about herself after court. Other than those few worse, she declined to comment on a multi-page settlement agreement approved by Justice Lori Sattler in Manhattan Supreme Court last week.

BASICALLY INTO YOU Now that gay performers have made inroads both on the charts and in the mainstream, is it finally time for our first androgynous. musical superstar? Glee survivor Alex Newell may be that performer. As rigid gender roles relax amongst millennials, and those that follow them (in age, not on Snapchat or Twitter), Newell could just catch a limousine ride straight to the top of the charts. His new video for catchy “Basically Over You (B.O.Y.),” from his Power EP, throws 50 shades of shade to an ex-lover who’s just not worth Alex’s time. BACK ON BROADWAY An Act of God, the comedy that had a successful limited run on Broadway last year with Jim Parsons, will be back in New York this May, with Sean Hayes filling the shoes of the Almighty. Hayes will travel with the production back to Broadway after starring in it in L.A. and San Francisco, where the show is now playing. The last time Hayes was on Broadway was in 2010 for the revival of Promises, Promises.

WHAT’S DRAG

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 8

Kim Chi Talks With NEXT

S

ocial media darling and makeup maestro extraordinaire Kim Chi is set to make his first Miami appearance at Score Nightclub’s Electric Sheep Sunday during the closeout night of Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016. We caught up with the dynamic, made-fortelevision, star to get all up in his business and see if we could pull a little bit out of him about the upcoming Drag Race episodes that have yet to air. We started with some light banter to see if we could ease our way into it. Read to find out if we accomplished our mission.

of the show? Since the show started airing, it almost quadrupled! It's insane!

JAMEER BAPTISTE: Is this your first time in Miami? What are your plans? KIM CHI: It is. I’m hoping to get some yummy seafood while I'm there.

Have things changed with your family since you’ve been on the show? Still the same.

You already had a big following on social media before RuPaul’s Drag Race. Has there been even a bigger increase since the airing

16

How are you handling your success? Success? Never heard of it. How has your life changed since being on RuPaul’s Drag Race? I went into a sandwich shop in my neighborhood the other day and they wouldn't charge me. I suppose that's something?

Is Kim Chi seeing anyone right now, testing the waters or all about the business for the moment? Nope! Still single! Jealous?

Who is Kim Chi at home when you’re not your persona? Usually working on costumes and chilling with friends. How’s Trixie Mattel doing? Are you two still good friends? Yes we are! She's doing really well. She’s currently traveling with the Divas of Drag Tour and working on her one-woman show! Where did you get your makeup aesthetic? Is it a style you created on your own or did you get the inspiration from someone else? I try to do my make up differently every time I get in drag and the inspiration comes from numerous different places. What’s your favorite brand of makeup? Sugarpill Cosmetics hands down! What’s one of your drag secrets that you are willing to reveal to the public? Elmer's glue is all you need to glue your brows down. How does it feel watching yourself on television? Really weird. Do I really sound like that in person? How’s working with RuPaul? It feels surreal. How’s RuPaul in person? Amazing! He looks even better in person than he does on TV. What episode or scene from the show are you most anticipating? Stay tuned! How is your dancing today? HAH. What are your thoughts on dancing? HAH. Okay we get it, we’re not going to get it out of you. Moving on. If you could perform anywhere, where would it be and why? Ideally Korea! There is no drag culture in Korea so that's something I'd like to bring over there. If you were a Real Housewife, what would be your opening tagline?

"I didn't come here to make friends. I came here to eat." What’s next for you in life? Are there any other goals that you are striving for right now? Yes! I have other fun projects that I'll be launching soon. I'm not going to announce it yet but stay tuned. Check out Kim Chi’s live performance on Sunday, April 10. Doors open at 10:00 pm. Tickets available at wanttickets.com, Electric Sheep Sunday April 10. ---Jameer Baptiste SCORE NIGHTCLUB 1437 WASHINGTON AVENUE MIAMI BEACH, FL 33139 305-535-1111

FINERY Josue Trejo @trejoshh_

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

HOW WOULD YOU CATAGORIZE YOUR LOOK TODAY? A modern dapper hipster. I love a tailored fit with classic detailing and a mix of colors with bold textures and accessories. IS THIS YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE? Yes. I always see myself going for a similar style even if I'm just doing errands or at home. DO ANY OF YOUR BRACELETS HAVE A SIGNIFICANT MEANING? No because I'm always losing them or giving them away, but I do have a gold elephant necklace that I keep on me at all times. It’s from my aunt so it’s very special because it reminds me of my family and how close we all are. HOW OFTEN DO YOU SWITCH UP YOUR LOOK? I'm always trying something new with my hair to make things a bit more different and challenge myself. I love stepping out of my comfort zone. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION? Having a style and owning it by being bold and standing out. To know what suits your body and yourself and to always accessorize!

LOUD& PROUD It's time for pride. EACH year, we gather on the shores of South Beach to celebrate our shared identity. Together, we stand loud and proud against the forces that threaten our equality. Macho Brand Ambassador Sergio Romero took us to 12th Street beach in the latest fashions by Marco Marco. There, we discovered Romero's adorable smile and slamming body, giving us two more reasons to keep on fighting for what we have earned.

ELAINE LANCASTER:

STILL ON TOP AND PROUD AS EVER

Almost 20 years after putting on lashes and getting in heels, Elaine Lancaster is still on top. BY ALEXANDER KACALA

32

F

or two decades, James Davis, the man behind Elaine Lancaster, has worked for the LGBT community in South Florida and all over the world. From hosting the White Party for 18 years to being named an inaugural Diversity Honoree last year to being cast on The Real Housewives of Miami, Lancaster has done it all. Revered in the South Florida community, she is busy as ever–from hosting a new weekly drag brunch at Senor Frogs to emceeing the main stage at Pride for the fourth consecutive year. “I started going to gay pride festivals in the mid-1980s and one of my first was New York,” she remembers. “I was standing on the side by myself looking at the participants who were obviously sick with AIDS and thinking, ‘Oh dear God. How long is it going to take for them to find a cure?’” Later, that desire to help others affected by the disease pushed Davis towards drag. “I became a drag persona to do benefits for AIDS organizations or for individuals in the community who were sick. There was no medication back then like there is today. When they were diagnosed, they were dead in six months.” That led Lancaster to more and more work within the community, becoming a staple at local nightclubs. “I diversified from just working in nightclubs to then DJing to working for Fortune 500 companies to doing events for some of the richest people in the world.” Some of those people include Lea Black, his best friend who helped recruit Lancaster and his non-drag alter-ego to be on The Real Housewives of Miami a few years ago. When asked about what she loves about pride, she quickly responds, “I used to ask myself, ‘Why do we need pride?’ But it’s so important in this day and age when so many people are trying to take our hard-fought earned rights for equality and acceptance away in the realm of the legal world.” “They are trying to turn back the hands of time,” Lancaster says. “Look at North Carolina. Look at Mississippi. In the state of Georgia where I am from. I was born in a hot bed of racial inequality. It’s so important to me to always fight for what is equal. I don’t consider myself to be anything else than gay. I’m not trans, I’m not this, I’m not that. But I fight for the equality of all.” Being fairly new to the area, I had never seen Lancaster perform or host an event until this past

Sunday at Senor Frogs. Sure I had seen some glamorous photographs online and bumped into the diva at the VIP bar for White Party, but I never experienced her on stage. What fascinated me most is how she bounces back between so many personalities. One moment she is standing tall posing for a photo like a Glamazon. The next, she is lying on the floor acting out a comedic bit of a silly song. It takes a real pro to do that – and someone who doesn’t take themselves so seriously. This is drag after all, right? While Elaine Lancaster is the persona of a rich white woman, humility and humbleness is there if you look real close. “Drag queens have always been on the forefront of social movements, I guess because they have been marginalized from the community. Now that it is has gotten such acclaim and prominence, it’s an awakening. I have been to prides before where they didn’t want drag queens. No leather queens or drag queens! I thought, ‘what the heck. Sounds boring to me.’” Sounds boring to us. This will be Lancaster’s fourth year as hostess and emcee on the main stage at Miami Beach Gay Pride. From 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm, she will be on the microphone. When asked if Red Bull or coffee get her through the long day, she jokes, “Cocaine!” “So many of our hard fought rights are taken for granted. We have to reestablish ourselves every six months. Just because it’s law doesn’t make it easy sailing. There are people on every corner trying to take away our rights.” “There is one thing to guarantee in this life and that is change. There is an evolution. You have to be smart enough to navigate the seas of change so you can stay on course. To see how things are shifting and establish a core or oath to stay on your path.” Lancaster’s path is clear - right on top where she belongs.

Elaine Lancaster hosts drag brunch every Sunday at Señor Frog’s (1450 Collins Avenue Miami Beach, FL 33139.) Also, see her emcee Miami Beach Gay Pride at 3:00 pm on the main stage on Sunday, April 10.

I never know what it's going to be. Sometimes it's an image. Sometimes it's a song. For my first show, it was Vicky Vox. Her attitude and image told my story. BRANDON ALLEN A Sip of Miami Beach Gay Pride

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE PHOTOS BY DENNIS DEAN 48

LAST CALL

B

randon Allen, a good ol’ West Virginia boy, loves the outdoors and had a blast skiing, water rafting and zooming around on ATVs. But even though he enjoyed his childhood, he needed a lot more “pride” in his life than his conservative WV town offered, so he made his way to sunny South Florida to live out loud.

F

ive years later and the 25-year-old hazel-eyed cutie pie has settled in quite nicely picking up bartending along the way. Currently, the veteran bartender works for RentA-Bartender, which has been helping with Miami Beach Gay Pride for years. Before he spends 14-hours-day making us smile at Pride, we wanted to ask what makes him smile.

Who’s your celebrity crush? Cameron Diaz. I've actually had dreams about being friends with her. Gym or nap? Gym. Fitness is a lifestyle, but trust me I would rather be napping. White picket fence or bachelor for life? Bachelor for life is great; however, eventually I do want a family. Are you warm and cuddly or ruff and fast? How about you take me on a few good dates and maybe you'll find out. Are your blunt or passive? Blunt! Outdoors or stay in? Outdoors on the beach with friends. You’re alone on an island. What three essentials do you take? I would go crazy but knife, lighter and a tent. Cover up or sleep naked? Sleep naked, but I'm usually covered up. My room is really cold so my bed can be a very cozy nest. Romance movies or action flicks? I'm a hopeless romantic but I do love a good action flick. Mix the two and that’s perfection. Boyfriend preference, nerd or jock? I don't like labels. Just make me laugh, carry a good conversation and live a healthy, active lifestyle. u

T Seek out Allen at Miami Beach Gay Pride at the Budweiser Trailer on Saturday, April 9 and at one of the pride bars directly on Ocean Drive and 12 Street on Sunday, April 10. If you happen to be in Provincetown this summer, stop into Monkey Bar (149 Commercial Street Provincetown MA 02657; 508-487-2879) and let him know you read all about him.

PRIDES WORTH THE TRIP BY ALEXANDER KACALA

M

iami pride is fabulous and we’re lucky to have it in our backyard. But there are also wonderful pride parades and festivals that span the globe the rest of the year. From a parade on a canal to a parade at night, we round-up seven prides around the world that are definitely worth the trip.

52

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – JUNE 3 Tel Aviv Pride is the largest LGBT event in the Middle East. Last year’s theme, “Tel Aviv Loves All Genders,” focused on transgender equality and brought out more than 180,000 attendees. In a city where gay life is everywhere, Pride is a joyous celebration in which the entire community joins in. From dancing in the streets to parades by the beach, it is a wild good time full of eye candy galore.

TRAVEL

gaysitgespride.com

SITGES, SPAIN – JUNE 16 TO JUNE 20 A 40-minute train ride south from Barcelona, Sitges is a popular gay destination that was once an enclave for artists like Picasso. Now it welcomes an international gay community all year round, especially for Pride. Book your hotel room early because places get taken during Pride. Avenida Sofia Hotel is just around the corner from the gay beach and has a spa, rooftop pool and bar. Its stylish rooms have contemporary decor and some offer fabulous sea views.

TORONTO, CANADA – JUNE 24 TO JULY 3 Toronto’s Pride Parade has a glorious 35-year history, and it continues to grow and get better each year. One of the largest Pride celebrations in the world, with an estimated attendance of over 1 million people, it includes a three-day street festival, a special family program, Trans Pride, the Dyke March and the infamous and fabulous Pride Parade.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA – JUNE 24 TO JUNE 26 St. Petersburg Pride is a vibrant festival featuring art, music and performances of all kind. The Pride parade, a lively display that runs right through the heart of the gayborhood in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District is a highlight event. And you don’t have to suffer the harsh sun: The procession begins at sunset on Saturday, June 27.

BERLIN, GERMANY – JULY 22 TO JULY 24 Known by locals as CSD Berlin (Christopher Street Day), and by the rest of us as Gay Pride Berlin, the festivities are now spread over a week and offer around 200 events. Berlin’s ‘Christopher Street Day’ offers one of the most eclectic pride celebrations in Europe. Events include shows, exhibitions, lectures, films, concerts and plenty of partying.

AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND – AUGUST 4 TO AUGUST 7 Amsterdam Gay Pride is one of the most unique and largest pride events around the world. During the first weekend of August, you can always enjoy a series of circuit parties, street parties and the world’s only gay Canal Parade. The only pride parade where the floats actually float, this unique procession takes place on Amsterdam’s famous canals.

CURAÇAO – SEPTEMBER 26 TO OCTOBER 2 In 2013, a group of gay professionals came together to form Curaçao Gay Pride. Now, the weeklong Pride boasts a bunch of fun-filled activities for a diverse audience. The Floris Suite Hotel and Spa is the host hotel, offering 72 elegant, residence-style suites nestled among a tranquil garden setting.

Ways to Spring Clean That Workout Routine BY TOM BONANTI

FITNESS

S

pring is a wonderful time for deep cleaning those corners and crevices of your home where dust and dirt collects all year long. It’s a great season to go shopping for some new threads for work and play as you toss items of clothing you haven’t worn in ages. With this renewed frame of mind, it might also be wise to review your current fitness regime and take some steps that will insure continued progress. In ascending order of importance, I present my five fool-proof steps for a healthier, happier, more attractive you!

5

UPDATE YOUR WORKOUT ATTIRE.

4

CLEAN CUPBOARDS AND STOCK SHELVES WITH HEALTHY CHOICES.

3

DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Still wearing the same old cotton T shirts and baggy shorts? Why not replace wornout duds with shorts and tanks in brightly colored wick fabrics? While you’re shopping, it might be good to invest in new sneakers. Your feet are worth the cost, so my suggestion is to splurge and invest in a cross trainer for lifting, and a solid, durable running shoe for cardio work.

Candy, cookies, pretzels, and chips add nothing to your life except empty calories and unwanted inches on your waist-line. Processed meats and cheeses, white bread and potatoes, and high fat condiments like mayonnaise and salad dressings are even worse for your health, so deep six these pesky culprits. Go shopping at an outdoors farmers market for fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fresh cuts of meat and fish. Eat healthy, look better, and live longer!

Change is great because doing “the same old same old” can stagnate and bore you and make you boring to others. Research new workout routines on-line. Be open to suggestions from friends and Twitter and Facebook articles and products you find helpful. As you open up about your goals, you may want to team up with

a like- minded workout bud. Change gyms if necessary. Try outdoor sports like swimming, tennis, golf, or running. Hire a personal trainer for sessions, take a class, sign up for a race-anything, just keep it fun, challenging, and a consistent part of your daily life.

2

CHANGE YOUR THINKING AND SET REALISTIC GOALS.

1

GET YOUR ANNUAL PHYSICAL.

Your body is a lifetime project that requires effort, work and patience to accomplish great things. If you loathe counting calories, focus instead upon portion control. Despise the idea of dieting? Turn your attention to developing a creative nutritional plan. Eat healthy, delicious fresh foods that will make you feel and look better. Don’t have endless hours to spend in the gym? Start with weights twice a week for 20 minutes. Do some power walking with a co-worker at lunchtime. There are myriads of opportunities to slide in fitness breaks, no matter how booked and busy your days may be.

My doctor tells me that only about 20 percent of Americans get a yearly checkup! Sure, we all hate crowded waiting rooms, the sight of needles and a bossy doctor reading us the riot act. But high cholesterol, out of control blood pressure and vitamin deficiencies can be silent killers if they go unchecked and untreated. These factors also come into play as you chart out exciting new goals for you spring fitness regimen!
