Wear Your Bravery On Your Sleeve BY JAMEER BAPTISTE Lady Gaga and Elton John are two exceptional artists who have repeatedly opened their hearts and wallets for good causes. It comes as no surprise that the two iconic celebrities have collaborated on a new charitable clothing line together. Love Bravery was launched across the country at select Macy’s department stores on May 19, 2016. Among other Macy’s hotspots, Miami, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles all welcomed the clothing line. A total of 150 Macy’s stores will be exclusively carrying the charitable brand. The collaborated effort by the two talented artists is predicated on their love for giving back and making the world a better place through their respective foundations. With the sale of the garments and accessories, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and The Elton John AIDS Foundation will raise much-needed funds to help their causes. “It’s an honor to team up with Sir Elton John to create this line with Macy’s,” said Lady Gaga. “We need to make the world a kinder and braver place where men and women

A New Pride Experience:
SHOP WITH PRIDE

ow, this is big! 2016 Stonewall Pride will be accompanied by an innovative experience never seen before. And it’s all thanks to Westfield Broward mall, which has built a LGBT zone that spans their entire shopping center from June 2 to June 13. For 10 days, Westfield Broward has crafted events all in the effort to show their support for our community. They will have everything from popup stores to runway shows to events off-location. There will be musicians, singers, dance groups and LGBT designers participating in their Shop with Pride extravaganza. 16
WHAT’S “Every single day, there will be some event going on from happy hours to runway shows,” ensured Andrew Martineau, Westfield Broward’s Director of Marketing. Shop with Pride is just one of the many community outreach initiatives done by Westfield Broward. Martineau, himself, actually spearheaded the initiative three years ago with the desire to differentiate his mall from the many others in the surrounding area. He and his team created a whole new shopping scene where the experience comes first and shopping comes second. Throughout the year, shoppers can experience an array of activities both at the mall and offsite, all centered around different cultural experiences like a Caribbean and Hispanic theme. The idea is to share the wealth of diversity of the South Florida landscape with that of their existing shoppers while potentially attracting new ones--it’s Westfield Broward’s way of expressing their inclusivity thus respect and acceptance for all. Now for the first time since implementing the initiative, the Westfield Broward team will be showing their love and support for our community. Next magazine and Florida Agenda are the mall's media partners and had a direct hand in developing the project alongside the Westfield Broward team. And we can’t be happier to present it to our community! “We definitely reach out to experts in different communities to find out what are the best ways to engage that group,” shared Martineau after explaining that the MMP family played a big role in initiating Shop with Pride. There couldn’t be a better place than Westfield Broward to house this unique and exciting new adventure. The mall itself has recently gone through a $39 million renovation includ-
ing upgrades to their dining court with handpainted Italian tile and a new state-of-the-art Regal Theater with 3D screens, RPX sound and picture quality and plush leather seats. The 12-screen Regal Theater is the newest in all of South Florida. Everything is new and fresh, just like Shop with Pride! Radio Station 93.9 is on-board as the music sponsor and the luxury department store Macy’s once again shows their love as an official partner of the entire event. The array of events themselves are reviving and luxurious. There’ll be two separate swimsuit fashion shows one by JCPenney and other by the designer department store Dillard’s. There’s a lot more happening at the mall and offsite: Macy’s Private Shopping event, a comedy event with cuddle bear comedian Peter Bisuito, Pride Brunch at Brio Restaurant, Movie Night at Regal Broward and a Macy’s fashion show at the W Hotel just to name a few. There will even be a live photoshoot in the heart of the mall by professional photographer Dennis Dean. What’s so rewarded about the project is that it’s all a push to support our community and giveback. Westfield Broward will be selling signature Shop with Pride gift bags for $20 with all the proceeds going to support the Pride Center. These aren’t your ordinary gift bags either: they are jute material beach bags with rope handles and the Shop with Pride rainbow logo -- they are crammed packed with gift cards and goodies worth well over the price of the bag. Shop with Pride’s kick off party will be hosted by the Pride Center in their very own boutique space in the mall called Pride Central. his was evident throughout the past season on RuPaul’s Drag Race. While this could be taken as an insult by many, Betty seems to be totally OK with the public knowing this about her persona. Coordinating this interview with her and her team was difficult, and when she finally did respond to our answers – she answered with that acid tongue. No wonder her website reads, “New York City's Fiercest Drag Bitch.” This personality has helped garnered her a devoted fan base. If you’re a fan, you’re in luck. The New York-based drag queen is coming to The Manor this weekend on Saturday, May 28 for its annual Fort Lauderdale White Event with celebrity DJ Tony Moran. 21

Looking back on the season, what was your proudest moment? Drop kicking Chi Chi after she body slammed me for calling her a sloppy turkey neck. They didn't show that part, but through it, we have become friends. I have become friends with most of the girls and that’s been the best part of this experience. Anything you regret saying or doing? I regret auditioning. People would still think I’m dead and not stalk me into bathrooms of Starbucks; though the cute stalkers I very much appreciate! I heard through the grapevine that you were actually supposed to do the character Pepper Ann for Snatch Game, but wasn't allowed due to rights not being issued to the show. Is this true? Yes. I look just like Pepper and portrayed her for my audition tape.
Have you ever been to South Florida before or is this your first time? I have performed in Tampa as well as in Orlando, but that’s as South as I have been.
Who would you like to see on All Stars 2? Pork Chop, Lady Bunny and Michelle Visage. Even better, Santino. What advice do you have for the queen's on season 9? Don’t listen to any negativity people may have about you or give you. Their opinion doesn’t alter paying your rent and who cared about their opinion anyway? If you had a single come out, what would the name be and who would be featured on the track? They are called "Fantasy" and "Acid (Drop!)" You and your sister are very close. Where does that bond come from? Other than being siblings, the loss of our parents and close relative's early on in life definitely helped. What's next for you? rust and believe you won’t be dosing off to the Electric Sheep Sundays at Score anytime soon. On the contrary, you’ll be wide-eyed awake jamming the whole night through with the captivating imagery constantly displayed at this nightlife bonanza. The electrifying night is the psychedelic visual performance art concept of producer and promoter Dustin Reffca. The mind-altering explorer created the night to give our community an intense atmosphere of creativity in the form of music and entertainment. Reffca invites the overthe-top and uber eccentric to zap energy and excite the eyes of everyone who walks through the club’s doors. “With everyone's attention span being about 10 seconds these days, I wanted to create a night that stimulated the visual senses,” explained Reffca. With more than a year under its belt, Electric Sheep Sundays has had an endless list of entertainers that have made the night increasingly popular with locals and tourists that descend on South Beach for an unique and unforgettable experience. Local starlets like TP Lords, Rubber Child, Glitter Puse, Miss Toto, Sleeper and Ann Atomic are monthly guests that keep the harmlessly devious fantasy alive. Reffca also enlist special guest stars from around the country to intoxicate partygoers with their drastic and one-of-kind looks. RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 final Kim Chi was the host during Miami Beach Gay Pride and Trixie Matel, Triniy K. Bonet, Kennedy Davenport as well as social media sensation Bible Girl 666 has shown face at Electric Sheep.
“The visuals are all go-go club kid performers,” revealed Reffca. “And the music keeps the night high energy.” Resident DJ Sushiman is the prefect compliment to the high intensity and creative flair that is Electric Sheep. Sometimes DJ Sushiman will share the turntables with internationally known special guest DJs. This Memorial Day Weekend Los Angeles DJ Derek Monteiro will be spinning his famous house music tracks -- it’s just another glorious crazed night at Electric Sheep! Andres Bustani A Tennis Player Comes Out BY JAMEER BAPTISTE 34
N
o matter how many sports stars come out of the closest, each revelation is a major victory for inclusiveness. But in the world of tennis, gay and out males are virtually nonexistent. All of which makes Andres Bustani all the more unique.
The now confident tennis star struggled in his youth with his sexuality. Born and raised in Mexico, the odds were stacked against Bustani when it came to expressing his true self. His native Spanish culture wasn’t very accepting of the gay lifestyle. His only cooping mechanism was to burying himself by focusing on his first true love--tennis “I began to play tennis when I was 8 years old,” recalled Bustani. “I quickly fell in love with the game; it gave me hope and a passion in life.” That passion helped him through his adolescent years leading up to high school at an age when he first realized what his internal feelings meant. When he was 13, Bustani moved with family from Mexico City to the town of Cancun. It was there that the teenage tennis enthusiast had a moment that would change his life forever--he accepted that he was attracted to men. Still too young to act on his sexual identity, and with no one close to confide in, he refocused his energy on tennis. His graduation and subsequent acceptance into an American sports college retriggered his suppressed feelings.
It was an internet connection that brought the two college boys together. One in Idaho and the other in New York, they managed to keep communication solid for six months and then finally got up the courage to meet faceto-face in New York. Adam showed Bustani a healthy dose of gay culture--an experience that enlightened him and helped build a strong bond between the two and officially made them boyfriends. Adam continued to encourage Bustani by giving him the love he desired and showing him that coming out isn't as frightening as he once thought. Just by witnessing the support and good nature of Adam's friends and family was all Bustani needed to gain the freedom to be himself. It allowed him to open up to his own friends and family one-byone starting with his female best friend. She took it in strive and the elated Bustani spread the news like wildfire. Fortunately, like the lucky few of us who have positive coming out experiences, Bustani found acceptance from everyone in his life from his tennis team to his family. Today, the new Andres Bustani lives happily playing tennis and cuddling close with his long-distance love, Adam.
“I couldn’t have been more excited to be recruited by Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho,” Bustani said. “I was aware that being gay in America was more common and accepted, and that gave me hope.”
The courageous young adult just finished his four-year degree in Industrial Electronic Technology with a minor in coaching. And he’s currently finishing up his last tennis season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament. From there, he will be off to an unspecified national destination to assume the position of country club or resort tennis coach.
What the naïve Bustani failed to realize is that Idaho, circa 2010/21011, had little to no gay life. Especially not in Lewiston with its population of 32,000. And he had yet shaken the in-bred notion that jocks just weren't suppose to be gay. But cupid’s arrow gave the timid tennis star the nudge he needed to live in his truth. Adam his first and only boyfriend bestowed a sense of clarity within him.
The young 22-year-old Bustani still has a lot of life ahead of him but for right now his hopes and dreams have come to fruition. But he will not allow his good fortune to go to waste. He will tell his story to all who listen with the hope that everyone out there who think that they’re struggling with demons will realize that it’s just more of their beautiful truth. N

here’s an old saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Actually the same can be said about building your body. It takes time, perseverance, and consistency to gain muscle, lose fat, and remain healthy and fit in the process. Often it can be an overwhelming, even daunting process. Today we are bombarded with images of gorgeous, young, rippling muscle gods and super heroes who spend hours, even lifetimes in pursuit of physical perfection. So what’s a body to do, especially if you don’t have endless time to spend in the gym and an inexhaustible income to blow on supplements, plastic surgery, and personal trainers?

Simply develop a solid, rock hard foundation to your fitness routine that incorporates three key components. CARDIO-VASCULAR TRAINING (AEROBIC) fortifies the heart and lungs and keeps you energized with blood flow. RESISTANCE OR WEIGHT TRAINING (ANAEROBIC) fortifies muscles, making fibers stronger and more durable. STRETCHING helps your joints to remain supple and flexible as you age and your body changes.
Don’t give me that old excuse, “Doing cardio is boring!” If you are bored, then you aren’t doing it effectively, or just aren’t aware of all the options out there that can get your heart pumping. From fitness boot camps where you can meet other like-minded fitness fanatics, to having more and raucous sex with your boyfriend(s), you can surely find some form of activity that will rev up your heart. If you prefer a more conservative approach to cardio-vascular training, there’s swimming in the Atlantic, jogging on the beach, or sampling all the various cardio machines in your gym. Now, here’s a novel idea: try walking! Instead of walking at a steady pace for an hour each day, pick up the pace and aim to get 30 minutes of vigorous walking in at least 3 days a week.
Add some light hand weights now and then to pump up your arms and shoulders. In order to increase muscle mass and bone density, most adults need to perform resistance training exercise for all of the major muscle groups about twice per week. Although muscles are built by progressively and systematically overloading them with weight bearing exercises, the truth is, most guys don’t really want to resemble the Incredible Hulk. Research shows that you can build and maintain a tight, toned, muscular physique by doing more reps with moderate to light resistance. The point is to work those muscles to fatigue by doing a variety of movements and weights. Dumbbells, resistance bands, and exercises using your own body weight, like push-ups, planks and lunges can all be used to build and sculpt beautiful muscles. Stretching is an essential component of fitness training. Yoga and Pilates classes are marvelous, but you don’t have to be Gumby in order to take your muscles and joints through their full range of motion. Flexibility can increase easily with just a few minutes of light stretching every day. For best results, try more extensive stretching before a run, jog or swim. For weight training, go for a light cardio warm-up before weights, and stretch the muscle group you are working between sets of exercises. Don’t make working out just another boring chore to add to your “to do” list. Challenge yourself to keep it simple, effective and fun and you’ll stick with it!
