GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

From the hot topics to the hot messes, here is what you may have missed last week. VEGAS DEBUT Colton Haynes made his Vegas debut last week - in a big Britney way. He joined Britney Spears on stage during her show in Vegas. His caption for the video read," Still in shock haha. Made my Vegas debut with @britneyspears @phvegas ‪#‎PieceofMe‬ ‪#‎TheAXIS‬ What the hell just happened!!!??? So cool!!!" The best thing about the whole thing is Britney has no idea who he is. Stars are just like us! Britney Spears humors them on stage and autographs an over-sized graphic tee for them too. KINKY TODRICK We are loving this. Todrick Hall just announced that on November 1, he will be stepping into some red pumps as Lola in the hit broadway musical Kinky Boots. We 10 AUGUST 25, 2016

love Todrick and love Kinky Boots, so we hope this is a match made in heaven! STRIPPED DOWN Dancing with the Stars and America’s Next Top Model star Nyle DiMarco is ready to get back in the spotlight — this time on a Las Vegas stage as the next celebrity guest host of the Chippendales show. People revealed last week that the sexually fluid star will headline the show for a four-week stint starting next month at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. He’ll be on the stage from September 22nd to October 16th. COMING OUT When David Hernandez competed on American Idol back in 2008, his singing career was overshadowed by rumors that prior to the

show he’d worked as a stripper with “mostly male” clientele. Now, eight years later, he’s here to set the record straight with his new single ‘Beautiful’. Hernandez has also officially come out in a new interview with OUT, explaining that “this song resonates with me. The lyrics are just so powerful. This is who I am, take it or leave it.” A STAR RETURNS It was announced on Lady Gaga's Instagram last week that the highly anticipated first single, "Perfect Illusion," from her new album would drop this September. It was also announced that she would be starring in the remake of A Star Is Born directed by Bradley Cooper. Mother Monster is back! Go to NextMagazineFl.com to find out more weekly gossip.

Shantell D’Marco 14 AUGUST 25, 2016

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

Shantell D’Marco is beautiful. While doing background research for this interview, this seemed to be the common theme. Almost everyone I asked about the transgender beauty was quick to point out just how attractive she was. But I wanted to know more. I wanted to see what was behind the flawless makeup and pretty smile that contributed to D’Marco being crowned the winner at the 44TH Annual Female Impersonators Miss Florida Pageant a mere few weeks ago. There had to be something special about her, right? Luckily for us, she made time for us to get to know her as she made her way back to her home in Orlando on a road trip. Tell me about your background Wait, can you hear me? I am driving right now so I have you on Bluetooth. I can hear you but can you hear me? (Laughs) I am from Havana, Cuba originally and I came to the US when I was 12. I’ve been living in Orlando for about eight years now. I would say that professionally I’ve been entertaining since I turned 22 years old. So I’m 35 now, so about 13 years. How did you choose your name? When I lived in Miami I never had a last name, I was only Shantell and I thought it was cute. (Laughs) Right before I did my first preliminary ever to go compete for Miss Continental, I felt that if I didn’t have a last name I wouldn’t be memorable so I started thinking of different names but nothing fit. I saw a movie playing called Don Juan Demarco and that’s when it clicked. Silly story, but that’s how it happened.

Did you know that this was something you always wanted to do? I knew that entertaining was something I always wanted to do. I just didn’t know if being transgender was something I wanted to be at first. I’ve always liked the stage and having the spotlight on me so I thought I was going to do acting and never thought I would be doing this. But I look at it as I am in a theater and the spotlight is on me. I have been working at the Parliament House here in Orlando for the past five years and I love being on stage. You said you were not sure you would be transgender at first, when did that process start for you? It started before my 24th birthday. Once I started getting recognized and I was getting paid for gigs. At the time, most of my friends were transgendered. I learned more or less about hormone therapy and I got introduced to it from them. I was actually taking hormones on and off by the time I was 22 now that I think about it. Mind you, all of these hormones were black market. Nothing was done through a legit doctor and I never had a doctor until about a year ago. My friends would give me advice on how many times I needed to inject myself and that’s what I would do. Did you have a vision of how you wanted yourself to look when you started the transformation? I didn’t have a vision. I wanted to be a woman. I just wanted to blend in. I never wanted to stand out. So I wanted to ensure that whatever I did to alter my body of my face was done in a slow process. When I saw the results that I wanted then I stopped. What advice would you give to someone who is in the space where you were at age 22? I would tell them to take their time and literally do their research and don’t get things done on the black market. If you’re going to alter your body then you should definitely do it surgically. There has been so many horror stories and I think that the girls now are a little more aware of the risks. AUGUST 25, 2016 15

Great advice. Now that you’re happy with where you are, what do you like most about entertaining? I just love feeding off the energy of the crowd. I understand that you can’t please everyone so you just do your best. I love what I do. Who is your favorite artist to perform to? I would say Jennifer Lopez because I can relate. She’s a hardworking Latina and I pride myself on that. Plus, I mean, the resemblance is uncanny (bursts into laughter). What’s your favorite song from her if you had to pick just one? I would say “If You Had My Love”. That’s definitely my favorite song from her. Plus, that was her first single you know! Speaking of love, are you in love? What is that part of your life like? Yes I am in love. I got married in November of 2015 and honestly nothing really has changed between us since. Things have only gotten better. I am very blessed to have Luis by my side and I am blessed to be with my soul mate. I know that I found my soul mate. What’s the hardest part of marriage? There’s some pressure. I feel like I need to keep the house a certain way and maybe to cook. Cooking is not my thing and keeping up the house is really not my thing so now I am looking for a housekeeper now. (Laughs) You’re now officially the 44th Miss Florida FI. Was this always a goal of yours? I fell in love with the format. I fell in love with the entertainment and how the pageant was ran. It was this element of class and it represented effortless beauty. I knew that one day I would be a part of it. I just had to enter and go for it. How did you decide what to wear in the pageant? Costume Couture, based right here in Orlando, did everything that I wanted. I had a vision of what I wanted to do and together we went for it. I think it came out perfectly. What’s ahead for Shantell D’Marco? In my personal life, I want to buy property and we want to adopt in the near future. That’s definitely something we want to do. In my career, I am going for more titles. I am going for Entertainer of the Year, All American Goddess, Miss Continental and USA. That’s in no particular order but those are the ones that I want. I want it all. N 16 AUGUST 25, 2016

efore you get your gym gloves in a bunch, there’s something you should know. This article isn’t about the mega popular gyms that you debate about with your friends on the weekends. We know all about your LA Fitness pride and how passionate some of you are about Orange Theory Fitness. We are also well aware of the Crunch Fitness enthusiasts and Crossfit warriors. There’s enough buzz about your beloved gyms already. We know that those gyms work for you and you are happy and committed. Instead, we decided to shed light on the Fort Lauderdale gyms that are some of the best-kept secrets in the city. If you’ve been looking for a place to workout where you can get in your zone, consider one of the options on our list. Not all gyms are created equal. We’ve compiled a short list of four stellar gyms that will give you more bang for your buck. Are you looking for a full body-training regimen that will help you achieve the goals that have always evaded you? Maybe it’s time that you give Pumpfit a try. This is a quality gym with an energetic team that will push you to harder than you’ve ever been pushed before.

PumpFit Club 408 N Andrews Avenue Pumpfitclub.com In December of 2015, Baulo Barreto took a leap of faith an opened PumpFit Club in Oakland Park. He believed in his vision and knew that he had a product that he could successfully market. Luckily for him, months later, his rick has turned into great reward as the gym continues to gain notoriety and members. “We offer one hour full body workouts that go far beyond the beaten path of circuits and stations. It is high intensity interval training that will really make a difference in your life,” said Barretto. “We’ve created our own training structures and our own interval structures. Every single day of the week has it’s own structure and there’s always a new workout. We never repeat workouts,” he said.

With qualified and inspiring trainers (5 are currently on staff ), several membership options and individual classes starting at just $25.00 per session , Pumpfit Club has everything that you need to reach your fitness goals without compromise. 18 AUGUST 25, 2016

2.2 Fitness 1425 S Andrews Avenue Located on S Andrews Avenue next to both Tap42 and Broward Health, 2.2 Fitness gets some points for its location. The personal training gym, which operates by appointment only, is the perfect gym home for someone who is looking to chase their fitness goals without dealing with the intimidation that can come with a busy workout area. Here, you won’t have to worry about big muscle guys smirking at you as you do your best to lift those dumbbells. You won’t have to wait around for machines or deal with annoying gym personalities either. It will just be you, your certified fitness instructor and your mission to get fit. “What makes us different is that we are more private,” said Ken Wawa, a certified fitness instructor who has worked at 2.2 Fitness for the past 3 years. “We are more personable and we have more of a family type of atmosphere. Everybody likes each other here and that makes it a whole lot easier to keep everybody motivated,” he added.

When you consider the fact that the gym is clean, never seems to be too busy and offers classes daily, it is easy to see why so many people are falling in love with Titan Gym.

Even though 2.2 Fitness is the smallest gym on our list, it adds to the cozy, living-room workout feel that many desire. With bright orange signs that will draw you in, a friendly and well-trained staff and a great location, this gym is a no brainer for anyone looking for a mix of personal training and high tempo spin classes.

Titan Gym 1440 N Federal Highway Titangymftl.com Previously World Gym, Titan Gym has the true essence of a neighborhood gym with real appeal. When now owner Jeff Ladrach took over, he says that this is the vision he had in mind. “This is exactly the kind of gym I wanted. I wanted to create a space where people from all walks of life felt comfortable, “ said Ladrach. “I like the fact that there is no attitude here and everyone has respect for each other. Titan is a place that feels like family and everyone who comes here just really wants to workout and workout hard,” he added. On our visit, it was clear that Ladrach’s vision had become a reality. Despite being home to professional weightlifters and hardcore trainers, there is no ego or gym shaming here. In fact, everyone is surprisingly warm and welcoming. This is the kind of place where someone would offer to help if your form was wrong without making you feel embarrassed about it. One of the highlights of this gym is the newly renovated upstairs area. Tagged as the “Functional Training Area”, upstairs is complete with turf, heavy bags for those looking to box, rowers and dumbbell sets for your lunges, bicep curls or whatever other exercise you had in mind.

9 Round 1031 N Federal Highway 9round.com Are you looking for a gym that will challenge you while giving you a fun and exciting workout every single time? I so, you should stop by 9 Round on North Federal High Way. The Kickboxing and fitness gym offers a hardcore 30-minute workout that will provide the perfect blend of cardio and resistance training. Set up like an obstacle course of sorts, each workout consists of 9 stations (thus, the name 9 rounds). Each round is 3 minutes long. After each station, there is a 30 second active recovery break before moving on to the next station. The workout starts with a warm-up before transitioning into strength training and all of the exercises are meant to build strength and agility while approving hand-eye coordination and core strength. According to Javier Reyes, Manager, each workout features high energy and intensity that other gyms in the area are unable to duplicate. By coupling loud upbeat music with motivated trainers, it doesn’t take much to get the most of their clients. Oh, and there’s more. Are you ready to hear about the best part of the 9 Round gym experience? “You can never be late for a workout! We don’t have set workout times like other class fitness gyms, “ said Reyes. “ If you just walk in, you can just jump into the workout. Since there are 9 stations, we can just send you to one that makes sense and then have you rotate after 3 minutes. It’s an intense workout, it’s fun and it’s more difficult than most people anticipate.” Fully decorated in red and black, 9 rounds has an appearance that’s as bold as its concept. The unique kickboxing circuit gym will certainly give you a workout that will help you reach your fitness goals. Oh, and your first workout is free! Drop in and give it a try when you can. The Golden Age

of RuPaul

With his monarchy stronger than ever, RuPaul candidly opens up to us and reminds us why he is going nowhere. BY ALEXANDER KACALA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATHU ANDERSEN

22 AUGUST 25, 2016

Oh

, honey, this is an up time. This is probably the golden age of drag right now.

amount of time so you better catch to the fucking chase. (Laughs)

That is what RuPaul said during an interview with Vogue in March, 2015 before the beginning of Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. This golden age is still reigning stronger than ever, as All Stars 2 begins this week. Season 9 is currently being filmed, and RuPaul is up for an Emmy.

I was going to say you should invoice me for all of the interviews I do with anybody because I almost always mention your quote about doors opening and doors closing and that life is very cyclical. And right now, for you the door of drag and Drag Race is open and you are going to keep walking through it. So that’s what I want to talk to you about today. That open door, All Stars, your Emmy nomination. Let’s start with All Stars, what are you looking forward to audience members seeing this season on All Stars? Well, you know these are all girls that we have come to know and love. It’s fun to see what they are up to now, how they have changed, knowing what it is like to be on television and back in that work room, how they handle these challenges this time around. With All Stars, we designed the challenges to really let these bitches have it. You know? They can’t come there expecting the same old challenges we have given them. Especially given that they have now traveled the world, they are superstars around the world. So we have to really, really let them have it. We know that when we put the challenges together for All Stars.

I'm trying to remember. I am not sure exactly when RuPaul entered my consciousness as a child. I think it may have been an appearance on a talk show, but I am not sure. He was always there, you know? I think this is the true sign of a star. No introduction needed. Just relentlessly there from the beginning. RuPaul was just always there. So when I found out my idea for putting RuPaul on our cover going into All Stars would happen, I couldn’t believe it. Weeks away from publication, the publicist from Logo informed me the interview would happen the next morning. I teased the phone call on my Facebook as “the most significant conversation of my journey in media.” So needless to say I was nervous. Sure, I know and have met a lot of big name drag queens but this was the closest I would ever come to the queen herself. I probably shouldn’t have shown my cards, but speaking too much truth is still something my family holds against me to this day. So the first words I blurted out to RuPaul were, “I am so nervous!” She didn’t hesitate and responded with an assertive and intimidating, “Good.” This was the big leagues. The next 15 minutes went by quickly but during that time, we found space to discuss politics, Tammy Faye, New York then and now, the importance of recognition and the challenges faced by outsiders. Our conversion reminded me why RuPaul has always been a part of my consciousness from the beginning, and why he isn’t going anywhere. ALEXANDER KACALA: I am so nervous! RUPAUL: Good. I think nerves are good, right? Yeah. Why not? I should probably – well, how is your day going first of all? It’s good bitch but you know you only have a limited

OUR CULTURE AS AMERICANS AND AS HUMANS ON THIS PLANET IS GOING THROUGH A METAMORPHOSIS. What about your Emmy nomination? What were you feeling when you found out you were nominated? My first thought was about Logo and how happy I was for Logo. You know, Logo has been around for a long time now and it really hasn’t gotten the recognition, I think, it deserves. So my first thought was how happy I was for Logo. But my whole life, my whole career, I have always worked off the grid, outside the status quo. So for the status quo to recognize the work I’ve done I’m like, “Ummm – that’s great but that’s really not the reason I do what I do.” It can’t – it couldn’t be the reason I do what I do because if I made that the reason, I would have been really, really disappointed many years ago. If I was looking for validation or recognition from the industry, it would have broken me. So, I love that they have recognized it but I am more excited for the people I work with. For their work to be recognized. AUGUST 25, 2016 23

AUGUST 25, 2016 25

ONTHECOVER I was at the Logo Trailblazer Honors and I loved what you said about Orlando when you said, “Don’t fuck with my family.” Where are you in processing Orlando or where are you in this emotional journey after what happened at Pulse? It’s interesting where mankind is today - where we are. I think we are on the precipice of a huge, huge breakthrough. We are moving so fast, so forward so fast, that a lot of people feel threatened by that because that means that they have to change. It means that they have to look at their own lives. So part of this metamorphosis – the same way a butterfly goes through this metamorphosis – our culture as Americans and as humans on this planet is going through a metamorphosis. So through this process a lot of violent acts – a lot of rejection of future is being dealt with. I do believe that the end result will be a beautiful butterfly but until then, I think humans on this planet will have to endure a lot more violent transitions of this process. You know? It’s unfortunate. It’s horrible. I think it is so horrible. We see it politically with what is happening. Right now our election is divided between people who are looking towards the future of the human race and people who don’t want to change. People who reject having to evolve. And that’s really what it is when you boil it down, that’s the great divide. People who want to keep the old way and people who are looking towards the future. What else do you think about the election? What are some of your other thoughts? Well, I think that right there says it all. That is what really breaks it down. Politics and policies have never really interested me in that way. I am more interested in human politics – the politics of emotion. What drives a person to do what they do? What motivates them and gets them out of bed in the morning. I think that is more telling of who we are. You know there is a whole other side to the human experience that is subconscious. I believe that the subconscious that tells us to buy certain product or to gravitate towards certain people in our love lives or maintain different ideas. I think political policies – people say one thing when they are out in public but then they do something completely different – or almost the complete opposite in another part of their lives. So I am more interested in what is happening in the subconscious. I think it’s actually more telling – the more telling true self. Since Orlando, there has been so much police brutality against people of color. With the Black Lives Matter movement, how do you personally 26 AUGUST 25, 2016

respond to that? I believe that there is the same amount of brutality. I am 55 years old. I am a black man and gay. I have witnessed the exact, same amount of police brutality. The only thing that is different children, you up and coming children, is that there are smart phones and people recording it. That is the only difference. It has always been this way. It is not different. The struggle for an outsider has always been a dangerous, dangerous road. You know, throughout my career I have learned how to be a shapeshifter. Even from childhood, I learned how to transform myself into whatever the situation calls for to protect myself. Even in my own family – I grew up with two hillbilly lunatics who were beating each other up – I learned how to survive in that battlefield. It hasn’t changed. It hasn’t changed. People are fucked up. Are they more fucked up now than ever before? I don’t think so. I think more people are talking about it now and they are recording it their fucking phones. We are connected to each other more so we are connected to each other’s “fucked up ness” more because of social media. Yeah. Sure. I’ll buy that. I just moved to New York. When you look back on your move to New York, what do you think about that now? Tell me about your experience as a former New Yorker? How do you reflect now on your experience here in the 80’s? You know I still live in New York. I love New York. I love LA. They are very different from one another. I actually just came back from a vacation in Greece just a few months ago and I decided then and there that I would never, ever complain about how New York has changed. How different it is from the 80’s. I am never ever going to complain about that again because what I realized was that places like in Europe that stay the same – it’s, it’s boring and it’s not good. You know there are great things about Europe. I don’t want things to stay the same. That is what makes New York so fabulous because it is always changing. It’s like tear down that bitch of a bearing wall and put up a god damn Starbucks. (Laughs) That’s a joke. That’s a joke. I love change and I love that New Yorkers believe in change. And that is what makes New York exciting. One of things Randy and Fenton from World of Wonder say about their subjects is that they, “Live out loud.” The documentary Through the Eyes of Tammy Faye that you narrated totally rev-

olutionized my world. When you think of Tammy Faye and her legacy, what are some things you draw from today? Well, the first I think about is Tammy Faye is the essence of the Pollyanna story line which is seeing the good in people. In fact, I have written about this - Tammy Faye appeared in a dream of mine where she told me, “Ru, focus on people’s innocence rather than their guilt.” Which is absolutely beautiful and I need to be reminded of that because that is what she was about. That’s what she got from her life as a Christian is that we focus on the good in people. Some people see Pollyanna as being ignorant and being not able to understand the complexities of life. But like Tammy Faye, Pollyanna is an ascended master. She understood the complexities of life. She understood both sides, the dark and the light. But she made a conscious decision to focus on the light which is really an elevated place to be. It’s not to say that the dark is good or bad. It’s just that the darkness will bring you pain. If you want pain that’s fine, no judgment. That’s your thing. But if you want joy, if you really want joy – you will focus on the light. You will focus on a person’s innocence and that is what I think of when I think of Tammy Faye. How does your lightness manifest itself? Well, it manifests itself in my ability to persevere and to maintain a career, to look at life as a beautiful gift. I have all of the aspects of this world. I have the darkness. But I have to constantly cultivate the light. I have to constantly work on conjuring up enthusiasm. I have to look for the enthusiasm and the enjoyment. All of those things - they don’t just come easily. Especially in this world that we live in, with the media. So much of the negativity it feeds our culture, it feeds the pain that lives in all of us. So to maintain my dreams and my aspirations you have to cultivate the light. So I do it all the time. You know? Some days are better than others, I’ll tell you that much. Before we end, can I tell you my drag name? Yeah. I use to do drag, after I saw Through the Eyes of Tammy Faye, my best friend Kate turned to me and said to me, “You know what would be an amazing drag name? Tammy Faymous.” Oh, that’s good. That’s a great drag name. I love it. ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ Season 2 premieres August 25 at 8:00 pm on Logo. N AUGUST 25, 2016 27

S

ummer beach vacations can’t be beat—yet there comes a time when your mind is baked and you need something more stimulating than a palapa and a parasol drink. A wander through any of the five locales listed below will reward you with groundbreaking architecture, invaluable masterpieces and provocative contemporary art, as well as stunning vistas that have mesmerized artists for centuries. Plus, museums make good hunting grounds for summer romance. AMSTERDAM Now that the newly restored Rijksmuseum has reopened, alongside the expansion of the Van Gogh Museum, the city’s entire Museumplein has been reinvigorated. Meanwhile, Banksy and Warhol convene at Moco Museum—and for those seeking Hollywood iconography, a Marilyn Monroe exhibit at the Nieuwe Kerk celebrates the silver screen’s most famous blonde on the 90th anniversary of her birth. Design mavens flock to the Jordaan, a chic neighborhood where Marcel Wanders oversees a wonder-filled studio housing his spellbinding Moooi gallery in an erstwhile 19th century school. BERLIN With more than 400 galleries and 20,000 visual artists, Berlin has become the European capital of contemporary art. Amidst a cultural renaissance similar to its 1920s heyday, Berlin offers a Biennale, as well as an annual Gallery Weekend and Berlin Art Week. The city’s 180 museums are complemented by three opera houses, eight symphony orchestras and over 100 theaters. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berlin’s Museum Island is the largest ensemble of museums in the world with collections that comprise more than 6,000 years of cultural and art history. Cinephiles head to Filmmuseum Berlin, which includes a permanent Marlene Dietrich exhibition, while fashion photography buffs revel in the transgressive oeuvre of Helmut Newton at his namesake museum located near the Berlin Zoo. MAINE With over 5,000 miles of coastline, the northernmost state in the U.S. mainland is one of the country’s most picturesque— and a haven for artists, past and present. Think Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Fairfield Porter, Andrew Wyeth and countless others. Start your Maine vacation in Rockland with a wander through the new Center for

Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA), which is located near the Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center. CMCA presents exhibitions that feature artists with connections to Maine, such as Alex Katz and Jonathan Borofsky, whose works inaugurate the new building.Take a drive along the Maine Art Museum Trail, an eight-museum collection that showcases the state’s rich art history with more than 73,000 pieces of art, including the nation’s second-largest collection of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. OSLO On the islet of Tjuvholmen in Oslo’s new arts district, Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park features sculptures by Louise Bourgeois and others alongside Renzo Piano’s billowing architecture for the Astrup Fearnley Museum. From atop Sneak Peak, Tjuvholmen’s 300-foot observation tower, you get a splendid vista of Oslo’s maritime setting. For another perspective on Norwegian art, spend an afternoon at Vigeland Park, which features more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, including many nude Norwegian males placed amidst a half-mile axis of serene walkways and lush lawns. VIENNA Voted the world’s most livable city for the past six years, Vienna has conjoined its imperial majesty with contemporary style. Consider, for example, the “Queen of Austria,” Conchita Wurst, winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Built in 1891, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien houses the world’s largest Bruegel collection, as well as the Kunsthammer, a 2,200-item collection of fabulous curiosities amassed by the ruling Habsburgs from the late Middle Ages to the Baroque era. Each year, Vienna Design Week transforms the city into a giant design showroom, with numerous installations, exhibitions and parties—while Long Night of Museums offers access to more than 100 museums all night long. Located amidst the city’s massive art complex MuseumsQuartier, mumok offers the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Central Europe with more than 9,600 works. N —M.A.T.
