Reaching Your Goals

hese practical tips on goal setting can help make it easier to set and reach goals:
Specific, realistic goals work best. When it comes to making a change, the people who succeed are those who set realistic, specific goals. “I’m going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines” is a much more doable goal than “I’m going to do more for the environment.” And that makes it easier to stick with.
2
It takes time for a change to become an established habit. It will probably take a couple of months before any changes — like getting up half an hour early to exercise — become a routine part of your life. That’s because 12

your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you’re doing is part of your regular routine.
3 4 5
Repeating a goal makes it stick. Say your goal out loud each morning to remind yourself of what you want and what you’re working for. (Writing it down works too.) Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen.
Pleasing other people doesn’t work. The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself — you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to. It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you’re doing something out of obligation to another person. Roadblocks don’t mean failure. Slip-ups are actually part of the learning process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking. It may take a few tries to reach a goal. But that’s OK — it’s normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change. So remember that everyone slips up and don’t beat yourself up about it. Just remind yourself to get back on track.

your emotions might mean bigger health troubles for you later on.
What Can I Do to Ease Pressure?
Talk about your concerns with a friend. Simply sharing your feelings can ease your anxiety. Sometimes it may help to get an adult’s perspective — someone who has helped others deal with sports stress like your coach or fitness instructor. Here are some other things you can do to cope with stress:
When the stress of competition starts to get to you, try these techniques to help you relax: • Deep breathing: Find a quiet place to sit down. Inhale slowly through your nose, drawing air deep into your lungs. Hold your breath for about 5 seconds, then release it slowly. Repeat the exercise five times. • Muscle relaxation: Contract (flex) a group of muscles tightly. Keep them tensed for about 5 seconds, then release. Repeat the exercise five times, selecting different muscle groups. • Visualization: Close your eyes and picture a peaceful place or an event from your past. Recall the beautiful sights and the happy sounds. Imagine stress flowing away from your body. You can also visualize success. People who advise competitive players often recommend that they imagine themselves completing a pass, making a shot, or scoring a goal over and over. Then on game day, you can recall your stored images to help calm nerves and boost self-confidence. • Positive self-talk: Watch out for negative thoughts. Whether you’re preparing for a competition or coping with a defeat, tell yourself: “I learn from my mistakes!” “I’m in control of my feelings!” “I can make this goal!”
• Treat your body right. Eat well and get a good night’s sleep, especially before games where the pressure’s on. • Learn and practice relaxation techniques, like those described in the previous section. • Get some type of physical activity other than the sport you’re involved in. Take a walk, ride your bike, and get completely away from the sport that’s stressing you out. • Don’t try to be perfect — everyone flubs a shot or messes up from time to time (so don’t expect your teammates to be perfect either!). Forgive yourself, remind yourself of all your great shots, and move on. It’s possible that some stress stems only from uncertainty. Meet privately with your coach or instructor. Ask for clarification if his or her expectations seem vague or inconsistent. Although most instructors do a good job of fostering athletes’ physical and mental development, you may need to be the one who opens the lines of communication. You may also want to talk with your parents or another adult family member. If you’re feeling completely overscheduled and out of control, review your options on what you can let go. It’s a last resort, but if you’re no longer enjoying your sport, it may be time to find one that’s less stressful. Chronic stress isn’t fun — and fun is what sports are all about.
When sports become too stressful, get away from the pressure. Go to a movie or hang out with friends. Put your mind on something completely different.
Recognizing when you need guidance to steer yourself out of a stressful situation doesn’t represent weakness; it’s a sign of courage and wisdom. Don’t stop looking for support until you’ve found it.
How Can I Keep Stress in Check?
Enjoy the Game
If sports make you so nervous that you get headaches, become nauseated, or can’t concentrate on other things, you’re experiencing symptoms of unhealthy stress that’s becoming a pattern. Don’t keep such stress bottled up inside you; suppressing 16

How Do People Get It?
Only certain animals can get BSE — people don’t actually get mad cow disease. However, experts have found a link between BSE and a rare brain condition that affects people, called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). Researchers believe that people who eat beef from cows that have BSE are at risk of developing a form of vCJD.
Experts don’t yet know exactly how long the incubation period is for vCJD (in other words, how long it takes from the time a person contracts it to the time that symptoms first appear). However, they do believe that it takes years, if not decades, from the time someone is exposed to the disease until the first signs appear. After the first signs appear, the brain can deteriorate within a year. At this time, there is no known treatment for the disease.

them. To stay healthy, it helps to give some thought to germs.
Germs Basics
The term germs is really just a generic word for four different types of organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms that are found throughout nature, including in the bodies of human beings. A certain number of bacteria are good for our bodies — they help keep the digestive system in working order and keep harmful bacteria from moving in. Some bacteria are even used to produce medicines and vaccines. CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE
But bacteria can cause trouble, too — ever had a urinary tract infection or strep throat? These infections are caused by bacteria. Viruses are even smaller than bacteria and can’t live on their own. In order to survive, grow, and reproduce, they need to be inside other living organisms. Most viruses can only live for a very short time outside other living cells. For example, they can stay on surfaces like a countertop or toilet seat in infected bodily fluids for a short period of time, but they quickly die there unless a live host comes along. But some viruses, such as the kind that cause hepatitis (an infection of the liver), can survive on surfaces for a week or longer and still be able to cause infections. Once they’ve moved into your body, viruses spread easily and can make you quite sick. Viruses are responsible for not-so-serious diseases like colds as well as extremely serious diseases like smallpox. Fungi (pronounced: fun-jye) are multi-celled, plant-like organisms that usually aren’t dangerous in a healthy person. Fungi can’t produce their own food from soil, water, and air, so instead, they get nutrition from plants, food, and animals in damp, warm environments. Two common fungal infections are athlete’s foot and ringworm. People who have weakened immune systems (from diseases like AIDS or cancer) may develop more serious fungal infections. Protozoa (pronounced: pro-toe-zo-uh) are one-celled organisms like bacteria. Protozoa love moisture, so intestinal infections and other diseases they cause are often spread through contaminated water. Once organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa invade your body, they get ready to stay for a while. These germs draw all their energy from you! They may damage or destroy some of your own healthy cells. As they use up your nutrients and energy, most will produce waste products, known as toxins. Some toxins cause the annoying symptoms of common colds or flu-like infections, such as sniffles, sneezing, coughing, and diarrhea. But other toxins can cause high fever, increased heart rate, and even life-threatening illness. If you’re not feeling well and visit your doctor, he or she may order testing to examine your blood and other fluids under a microscope or perform cultures
Kids & Teens | TECHNO & SCIENCE to determine which germs (if any) are making you sick.
How Can I Protect Myself From Germs?
The best way to prevent the infections that germs cause is by protecting yourself. Because most germs are spread through the air in sneezes or coughs or through bodily fluids like saliva, semen, vaginal fluid, or blood. If you or someone else is sick, your best bet is to limit contact with those substances. Washing your hands often is absolutely the best way to stop germs from getting into your body. When should you wash? After using the bathroom, after blowing your nose or coughing, after touching any pets or animals, after gardening, or before and after visiting a sick relative or friend. And of course you should wash your hands before eating or cooking. There’s a right way to wash hands, too — you need to soap up well using warm water and plenty of soap, then rub your hands vigorously together for 15 seconds (away from the water). Rinse your hands and finish by drying them thoroughly on a clean towel. It’s a good idea to carry hand sanitizer with you for times when you are eating out or not near a sink. If you spend any time in the kitchen, you’ll have many opportunities to get rid of germs. Be sure to use proper food-handling techniques, like using separate cutting boards, utensils, and towels for preparing uncooked meat and poultry. Another way to fight infections from germs is to make sure you have the right immunizations, especially if you’ll be traveling to other countries. Other yearly immunizations, such as the flu vaccine, are strongly recommended unless your doctor tells you otherwise. With a little prevention, you can keep harmful germs out of your way!

• If you’re cycling with friends, ride single file.
Kids & Teens | STAYING SAFE • Try to use bike lanes or designated bike routes whenever you can. In some places, it’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk. • Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway, an alley, or a curb. Some people in cars just don’t see cyclists.
• Never change direction or change lanes without first looking behind you and using the correct hand signals. That way everyone knows where you’re going. Use your left arm for all hand signals. To indicate you’re making a left turn, hold your arm straight out to the left; to indicate a right turn, bend your elbow, holding your arm up in an “L” shape; and before you stop, bend your elbow, pointing your arm downward in an upside down “L” shape.
• If you ride when it’s dark, be sure to have reflectors on your bike and a battery-operated headlight. • Watch traffic closely for turning cars or cars pulling out of driveways. • And finally, don’t wear headphones while biking — you need to hear what’s going on around you. • Don’t ride too closely to parked cars — doors can open suddenly!
Bike Maintenance
• Stop at all stop signs and obey red lights just as cars do. Take special care at intersections. It’s a good idea to walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals.
Kids & Teens | DOODLE CORNER
If you can, keep your bike indoors, especially on rainy days. This will help to keep your chain rust free. You’ll also want to check your tire air pressure (the correct pressure is on the sidewall of the tire), the brakes, and the chain (for grease and tightness) on a regular basis. Biking is a fun way to get exercise and a great way to get around. Observing these simple precautions will keep your ride smooth and your trails happy. ©1995-2013. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. And Dade City’s Wild Things located in historic Dade City Florida is just the place to make it happen with none other then ‘Tony the Tiger’. This is also where many specific breeds of animals reside, not just the big cats, in a very neat and clean setting.
But while Kathy’s project continues to grow it continues to be a seven day a week job for her. “Running such an operation is not as exciting as many may think”, she explained. You have food and veterinarian bills for all the animals, safety regulations from both the state and federal governments, making sure safety rules are followed and many other issues. Just locating a veterinarian that is qualified to treat big cats can be difficult she related. You do not find to many vets who want to treat a 500 pound lion or other such large and potentially dangerous big cats. She hesitated for a moment and explained, “It is not an easy task by any means however we love our animals and that is what is important”.
Meeting Kathy Stearns who controls the operation of the facility quickly made me realize how passionate she was as to the care of animals. When asked how she started such an operation she smiled and explained that for several years she was involved in wildlife rescue efforts which quickly resulted into more and more animals requiring assistance. She explained that tigers require large amounts of territory to roam and hunt. When we reduce that, the results are obvious. 24

Surviving Frost Damage in the Garden
Contact:Lisa Burns| Email: lisa@backyardgetaway.net | Phone: 941.752.7663 | Website: www.backyardgetaway.net
ver the past two weeks, we have had record low temperatures here in sunny Florida. You have probably stepped outside on more than one morning to ice on your car windshield & a blanket of frost on the ground. The first thing I thought of when I heard the forecast was I had better start covering my landscape plants.
O
Chances are if you covered your plants as I did you will notice that some of your plants still sustained damage. If the air temperature reaches below 28 degrees, your plants will have some damage regardless. One of the reasons for this is because the soil temperature will be colder than the air temperature. Another factor is how the plants were covered. If you lay a blanket or tarp over the entire plant and the cover is directly touching the plant there will still be damage. It is also important to remove the cover during the day so the plant can warm up. Like most of you, I am to busy to cover & uncover 100 plants everyday for two weeks, so, my plants remained covered. Some plants tolerate frost & cooler temperatures better than others do. The age and general health of the plant will play a factor in whether or not your plants will survive. Popular plants that usually are killed or damaged by frost include annuals, impatiens, marigolds, coleus & some sub-tropical like hibiscus, citrus & bougainvillea. However, do not give up just yet. Any plant that is still alive will attempt to recover. Many of your perennial plants like salvia & begonias will die back but the roots can survive the winter only 28

to re-sprout in the spring. Same goes for bulb plants like lilies & iris. Even if a plant has lost all of its woody parts, it can re-grow from the root or stem tissue. If you did not think to cover your plants in time or you have frost damage here are some tips to helping your plants survive.
Resist the urge… to prune that is!
With a yard full of damaged, dead looking plants the gardener’s first instinct is to prune. Don’t do it! The damaged leafs can work as an insulator for further damage and will serve as a starting point for new growth in the spring. In fact, heavy pruning can stimulate new growth that could be damaged again if, heaven forbid, we get another cold snap. If the neighborhood association is complaining it’s ok to clean the plants up a little but be sure to leave some of the damage intact.
Hydration is key but no feeding please!
Keep your plants well watered. This may be the most important factor in saving your damaged plants. Windy days will dry up the soil and the frost on the leaf will actually pull water from the leaf causing dehydration. Water your plants but do not fertilize them until spring once they have resumed active growth.
What about my pond plants?
The same rules apply for your pond plants, no pruning or fertilizing. They will actually have a better chance of survival because the water temperature is generally warmer than air temperature & the plants will be well hydrated from the pond water. Come spring when the weather warms, look for new growth & start pruning. If a plant is truly dead, don’t be too upset. That just means you have an excuse to buy new plants for your garden. Minerals: Elements that Build the Path towards Long Life he human body from birth, goes through a set of different phases. However, each physical body matures differently from another. The main difference aside from genes is one’s lifestyle. Improper food consumption, little or no exercise, stress (whether emotional, physical, or mental), diseases, and mineral deficiency.
T
Every day, according to researchers, the body needs trace and ionic minerals to generate billions of electrical impulses. Without the impulses, muscles don’t function. Thus, these elements are very important for the health and mobility of any human. Though they are available in fresh grains, fruits, and vegetables, the soil that they grow in are not as rich as they used to be in the past. The depletion of Mother Earth’s soil due to improper planting methods and a wide use of pesticides, has now affected its produce. Minerals are richly present in oceans such as the Great Salt Lake of North America. The San Francisco Chronicles’ Healthy Living Section states the importance of these nutrients for the human body. In a research done by E-Medicine Health experts, it is said that 90% of Americans “suffer from mineral imbalance and deficiency”. Since man requires nearly two thirds of elements to maintain good health, balancing nutrients can be a complex and important task. Every day life then demands a continuous flow of mineral ingestion to make sure imbalance that would lead to muscle malfunction is not experienced.
Eating food rich in iron, iodine, fluoride, copper, zinc, chromium, selenium, manganese, and molybdenum, is highly recommended. Each element is a trace mineral. One of the vegetables that experts recommend is beans. The World’s Healthiest Food site says that beans contain trace supplements like 200% molybdenum, 50% manganese, 36% iron, and 25% copper. Another source is lean beef. Whether broiled or grilled, the tenderloin provides zinc, selenium, and iron. A considered powerhouse in this matter is sesame seeds. They provide large percents of recommended daily value of copper and zinc. Bathing or soaking in a mineral bath is one growing trend that guarantees a healthy and fresher body. This has been practiced during the ancient times and was known to have rooted from Egypt and Rome. A spa or bath is efficient for stress release and relaxation. Plus, after soaking, skin will be smoother. Since it can be expensive to visit a resort or spa that offers nutrimental baths, some manufacturers have come up with a solution. Concentrated solutions are now available to be mixed in with water. Any lost element can be replaced when bathing in these solutions. Though it is a fact that all humans will pass away one day, maintaining a healthy lifestyle while still living will give you the opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.

Adult Living | CROSSWORD & SUDOKU FUN
A sudoku puzzle is a logic puzzle which is solved using logic and reasoning. Though the number of squares in the grid may vary, a standard Sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 blocks in which some of the numbers are given. The object of the puzzle is to fill in the rest of the grid using only the numbers 1 through 9 so that no number repeats in any block, row or column. The difficulty is determined by how many and which numbers are given and where they are placed in the grid and can range from very easy to extremely challenging. Though sudoku puzzles generally use numbers as symbols, no mathematical skills are required to solve the puzzle. View our next issue for the correct answers to this Sudoku puzzle.

I love the Jarpet concept for being an innovative and interactive way of exploring the animal kingdom. Basically the Jar is a 3-D projector that hooks up to the computer. You can download information and the app for a 3-D projected pet that sparks into life when the Jar is turned on. Ideal for chidlen, it can turn into a hub for learning the lifecycle of a butterfly to owning a pet squirrel. Kids can enjoy vivid interactions with it, via multi-sensory technology. There is a USB connection at the base of Jarpet, through which it is charged and transmits information. Online Jarpet shops will provide image data for various animals, and parents can make purchases according to their children’s interests. Digital Tracing Paper on iPad Instantly draw on top of imported images or background templates and circulate them around within a community for collaborative design and feedback. Morpholio Projects’ Trace app for iPad originally focused on architecture but new templates for automotive and jewelry designers means these toolsets are finally spreading to other design professions. Coupled with the numerous pen options available for the iPad, an affordable digital design tablet seems possible. Designer: Morpholio Projects
