Making Dreams Became a Reality! This year, I have decided to give back to the community of Lutz by running for “Guv’na of Lutz”. The Lutz Guv’na race has been a tradition in this small community for more than two decades, and this year marks Lutz’s 100th birthday. Every donation that I receive goes to local charities within the Lutz community. The fun part is, whichever candidate raises the most money receives the status of “Guv’na of Lutz”on July 4.

In other words they’d have plenty going on but still have time to relax. And that’s exactly how it should be. Summer is also a time to kick back and unwind. Kacey said, “It’s a break from homework and projects — and worrying about due dates for something.” Alexis said, “During school it can seem like you’re really tired, so since it’s summer vacation you can relax and read books and go outside and swim.” Ashlyn, who is in high school, told us, “It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year, sleep more, see my friends more.” Ashlyn has balance down right: She’s working at a job from 10-2 Monday through Friday and then plans to hang out with friends and family at nights and on weekends. But not everyone who took our survey said their summers would be the right balance of busy and relaxing. Many were worried that they’d be overscheduled or too bored.

Summer Blahs or Summer Stress? How bored or busy people feel during the summer depends on how old they are. Survey-takers in their early teens were more likely to be bored — with 40% saying they’ll be bored compared with only 10% who thought they’d be overscheduled. For high school juniors and seniors, this number was split more evenly. A quarter of survey-takers 16 and older said they’d probably be bored and a quarter said they’d be too busy.

Plan Ahead You’d think summer should be freewheeling and easy. But that doesn’t always work out in the real world. Many of our readers said that planning is the key to a good summer.
Stephanie told us, “I have had my share of summertime blahs, especially being an only child. All I have to say is arrange your week. Don’t always play it day by day; it doesn’t work. Esther said, “The place we go to every summer holiday is not very exciting. I’m a bit bored of it.” Lots of you felt this way — it’s normal as you get older to feel constrained by family vacations.
Jake: “If you run out of fun things to do, grab your iPod, turn it to your faves, then wash the car, mow the lawn, do the laundry, dust things, organize your closet...Seriously, you may think I’m dumb, but I bet the more you do for your parents, the more likely they are to say, ‘Go see a movie,’ ‘Go fishing with your friends,’ that sorta thing. But Rebecca offers a different perspective: “I am looking forward to vacation because it gives me a chance to leave town and be adventurous.” Take some advice from Amy, who suggested this boredom buster: “Go and get your portrait drawn, find a nice street artist!” So whether your family’s seeing the sights in Venice, California, or Venice, Italy, ask your sibs and parents to join you in a family portrait.

o, what are you doing after graduation? ” Many juniors and seniors get bored answering that question over and over. Whether your plans include college, heading straight for the workforce, or taking a year off, here are some practical tips to prepare yourself for the journey.
Rachel, who is about to start medical school, said she chose her undergraduate program with the idea of medical school in mind.
If college is in your future, you need to plan. Which schools appeal to you? How are you going to pay for your education?
Not all of us are so sure of our plans, though, and that’s OK too. Many people start off in a liberal arts program in college and then decide on a major after a year or two. (School counselors say that 75% of students change their majors after they enter college.) School is also not just about careers and getting a high-paying job after graduation — it’s a place for learning about yourself and the world.
How do you decide on a school when there are thousands to pick from? Start by asking yourself questions about your preferences:
Going to College Some people know from an early age exactly what they want to be and how they plan to get there. Rachel’s dad is a doctor and his love for his chosen career inspired her to follow in his footsteps. Selecting a School

And remember: You’re not the only one making a decision. Schools are picking from a large pool of applicants. They will look at your grade point average, standardized test scores, class rank, personal essay, and your extracurricular activities — so it’s important to dedicate time and effort to all these things.
To apply for federal aid in the United States, you have to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, although some schools use their own forms. Check with your school counselor to be sure you’ve covered all the bases when it comes to financial aid.

And now that I have, I don’t regret my choice at all.” Taking Time Off For some people, the prospect of starting college, especially going away to school, is scary. It’s probably the first time that you’ll be totally responsible for your own schedule. What if you intend to go to college but just don’t feel ready to start yet — for whatever reason — and you don’t want to take on a full-time job after graduation? You might want to take a year off to pause and regroup. This practice is common in some countries, like the United Kingdom, where it’s called a “gap year.” Taking time off doesn’t mean you should ignore the idea of applying to college. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. But this isn’t always true, so reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Do this more often if you’ve been swimming or sweating a lot — even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And remember that you can get sunburned more quickly when you’re swimming or boating because the reflection from the water intensifies the sun’s rays. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body so ask your parents or friends to give you a hand. If you want to block the sun’s rays, wear clothing that you can’t see your hand through. You may still get burned through more sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Don’t forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays. Drink Up! Drinking water is an important part of staying healthy, especially when it’s hot outside. When you’re sweating, you lose water that your body needs to work properly. And if you’re playing a
sport or running around in the sun, you lose even more water, because you sweat that much more. So drink up and don’t wait until you’re thirsty — drinking before you feel thirsty helps keep the water level in your body from dropping too low (dehydration) when it’s hot or you’re sweating a lot with exercise. If you forget and suddenly feel thirsty, start drinking then. There are lots of coollooking water bottles around, so get one you really like, fill it up, and drink up! Got That Hot Feeling? If you’re out in the hot sun or you’re exercising on a hot day, it’s easy to get heat exhaustion. Kids get heat exhaustion when their bodies can’t cool themselves fast enough. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak. Heat exhaustion can come on suddenly. A person may just collapse when playing soccer or tennis, for example. It can leave someone feeling really tired for days after it happens. Heat stroke is a more serious heat-related illness and can cause someone to stop sweating; to have red, hot skin; and to have a high temperature. The person might become uncoordinated, confused, or even lose consciousness. It requires emergency medical attention. Be sure to tell an adult if you’re hot and you have a headache or feel dizzy or nauseated (like you’re going to throw up). The grown-up will want to get you out of the sun, give you liquids to drink, and take you to a doctor, if necessary. The good news is that the sun doesn’t have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks when you start to feel too hot. And don’t forget your sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, they make you look so cool! ©1995-2013. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission

for antique dresser set up in a gorgeous sunlit field? How about a country theme in a quaint barn or under a giant oak? With this vision, you can find your perfect photographer. Each one has a STYLE, a way they shoot that lends itself to certain themes. Some photogs have a soft feel to their images and are very detail conscious, these would be the best choices for your DIY or vintage wedding. Some are all about finding the amazing angles, bright colors and rocking dancing shots- you’d definitely want them to capture those incredible times your friends will show off on the dance floor. The only way to narrow down which style is appropriate for the day you design is to know what kind of wedding you want. The looking at all the photography options don’t seem so daunting.
Wedding Guide | PHOTOGRAPHER #3 covers what answers you should hear.
#3 - You asked the right 3 questions, but how do you know what the “right” answers are? Good thing you have a pro to give you the deets on the industry standards. Even if you don’t fully understand why, know some key points will be a huge help! Question 1 about the equipment- Canon and Nikon are the most popular digital options, but Sony is creeping up the industry ladder. Within these are levels of consumer and professional. A quick search of the camera you’re told they use will tell you in which level they operate.
#2 - Interview, interview, interview.
By now, all brides on the “down-turnedeconomy-cutting-corners” train wreck have shared their stories of photographers who never showed after collecting hundreds or thousands. Those who didn’t have the proper equipment to handle the unique event that was created. What about the photographer who did show but the pictures were so bad, the couple has nothing to show? Once you narrow down your style, the next step is to interview your favorites. Not over the phone, not Trust me, this is instrumental if you are having a candlelight ceremony or a reception where you plan to incorporate a lighting design. Most pro level cameras have full-frame sensors which allow the photog to shoot in very low light conditions without all the grain crop sensor cameras impose. Some photographers even go so far as to state by looking at a certain amount of light is required for their wedding them to photograph your wedding. unique weddings are just that and some answers may be tech savvy dappled with lingo you may not have heard. If your photographer is confident about what they can do to give you memories that will show off your day, they’re a good fit. The one who stumbles over details and has to ponder each answer may lack the experience you need for your non-cookie cutter wedding. Last but not least, Question 3, put your money where your mouth is- or rather, your pictures. Asking to see the last 2 weddings they delivered in full gives you a much better idea of what you can expect your gallery to look like. A full wedding day typically has a 1/50/49 ratio. 1% of the images you will LOVE. You will want to canvas them across every wall and piece of sky so that all the world will be graced with such beauty! 50% of the pictures will be good, you’re happy, you like to see your friends dancing with such gusto, etc… the last 49% are the must have but seldom shown family arrangements, detail shots, and pictures that are the supporting story line. Don’t expect to be blown away by every image, but they should all be properly exposed, color corrected and aesthetically to your taste. Picking someone to trust with your most precious memories can be daunting but by doing some homework and knowing what you like, you can find the perfect person and not suffer the fate of countless couples before who detest their wedding day images. My last caveat- the typical budget for your photographer is 10% of your entire wedding budget. It is also true that a bad photographer can make an $50,000 wedding look like an $5,000 wedding while a great photographer can make the $5,000 one look like $50,000. By doing your research, you can find the right style to fit your budget and your special day.

hen I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twentyfive miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways…in the snow during the winter months. And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of information like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they’ve got it!

have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents! Child Protective Services did not exist and if they did it was OK for Dad to spank me if I had done wrong. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to discipline me..Nowhere was safe! There were no MP3’s or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted music, you had to hitchhike to the record store. Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio. There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We’d play our favorite tape and “eject” it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless.
But now that I’m over the ripe old age of seventy, I can’t help but look around and notice the youth of today. You’ve got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you We didn’t have fancy stuff like Call Waiting! just didn’t make a call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your “friends”. Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7! And we didn’t have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss,.. you just didn’t know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances. We didn’t have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like ‘Space Invaders’ and ‘Asteroids’. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen.. Forever! And you could never win. You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were really in trouble when it came to channel surfing! You had to actually get up and walk over to the TV to change the channel. There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I’m saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, not like today when they are available all the time. And we didn’t have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that! And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores! And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the “safety arm” across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling “shot gun” in the first place! So perhaps now you see what I am talking about. what I’m talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You guys wouldn’t have lasted five minutes back in 1950 or any time before! When you’re feeling motivated, and decide to set a goal, it’s tempting to become overambitious by setting multiple goals. While it’s great that you want to improve many things about yourself, the pressure of trying to achieve more than one goal at once will cause you to drop all the goals and go back to status quo. Focus in on the one goal that you really want to achieve first, and focus all of your efforts onto this goal with laser-like force. There will be plenty of time in the future CONTINUE TO PAGE 53

Adult Living |HEALTH to see to your other goals, but for now see your number one goal all the way through to completion. Step Two: Start Slow Another pitfall that often results in dropped goals is the act of starting out too fast and too strong. If your goal in fitness is to drop 6 pant sizes and to exercise 5 times a week, do not (I repeat, DO NOT) go out and hit the gym hard for the next 5 days in a row. You’ll be so sore that I guarantee you’ll stop all progress the following week and your goal will be put back on a shelf. Take a deep breath and remember that this isn’t a race. This is your life, and it’s you against yourself. Start out slow and steady and gradually build as you progress toward your goal. Don’t allow self-induced fatigue to get in your way. Step Three: Know Your Reasons Why Why is this goal so important to you? There are probably many reasons, and you should know every single one of them. Write down each and every possible reason you can come up with as to why your goal needs to be met.
before you’ve finished the work. The more you feel connected to the end of the race, the more likely it is that you’ll make it through. Step Five: Put It All On The Line It’s time to put your money where your mouth is. Invest in something that will help propel you toward your goal. When you shell out some of your hard earned money to aide in your progress, then you are going to take this process that much more seriously. It’s time to seriously commit yourself to seeing this goal to completion. If your goal is to lose weight and to get into amazing shape then invest in one of my proven fitness programs. My clients see results. My clients achieve their goals. It’s time that you become one of my clients. Call or email today and together we will get you to your goal.
Intimately get to know the ‘reasons why’ this goal is so important to you. You should have them memorized and should recite them every single day. Remember what Ford said - when you take your eyes of your goal you’ll see loads and loads of obstacles. Keep your eyes locked onto that goal by filling your mind with all of the ‘reasons why’ you’re going to see this thing through. Step Four: Think About It Along with thinking about your reasons for accomplishing your goal, it’s also helpful to focus your mind on how you’ll feel once you’ve done it. Dedicate some time each day to picture your new post-goal life. How awesome are you going to feel when you’ve accomplished this goal that’s been on your mind for so long? Pretty amazing. Fill your mind with that feeling of accomplishment well 54

Sudoku
Adult Living | CROSSWORD & SUDOKU FUN
A sudoku puzzle is a logic puzzle which is solved using logic and reasoning. Though the number of squares in the grid may vary, a standard Sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 blocks in which some of the numbers are given. The object of the puzzle is to fill in the rest of the grid using only the numbers 1 through 9 so that no number repeats in any block, row or column. The difficulty is determined by how many and which numbers are given and where they are placed in the grid and can range from very easy to extremely challenging. Though sudoku puzzles generally use numbers as symbols, no mathematical skills are required to solve the puzzle. View our next issue for the correct answers to this Sudoku puzzle.

Painless Vaccinations I would do anything to not make my baby go through painful vaccinations, but the hard truth is that they simply must. Keeping this in mind we have the VACC-STAMP, which offers a safe and painless way to give vaccine shots. It leaves them with a heart-shaped stamp on their skin rather than a face full of tears! • When the buttons on the sides of VACC-STAMP are pressed, a micro needle is injected. • It is so small that it causes no pain. At the same time, an anti-inflammatory and disinfectant mixture is ‘stamped’ on the skin to prevent secondary infection. • The stamp takes the shape of a cute heart icon, which stimulates the parent’s sensibility. Marriage and THE MILITARY
What to Expect! By Chuck Johnson MSG/U S Army (Ret)
hile this months issue of Florida Creative Living is focused on marriage it seems logical to discuss what will be in store for those men and women who choose to marry a partner in the military.
W
The military lifestyle may be great for the husband or wife however before you take the plunge there are a few things the prospective bride or groom should be made aware of. To be realistic I do not think my wife even gave it a second thought as to what military life would be like. We married right after her graduation from high school. She soon learned it was quite different. Married life in the military does not come with a manual and it is complicated. When 76

you have a young bride or even groom who has not been out from under the guidance of Mom and Dad ,such a move can be a shock. While many young men and women may think they are aware of what to expect, it seldom works that way. Life can be a hard teacher. First lesson to learn is that the military has total control of your spouse 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. He or she is at their beckon call. It may seem romantic to be married to a military man or woman and travel to far flung countries around the world, it can be and usually is different, especially at the start. For several weeks or longer your spouse will be in training which will limit his or her off duty time. If they are allowed at all to leave base. Living off base can be expensive and military pay is not the highest paid CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE
salary, however you will in most cases have access to military health care benefits, a post exchange and other benefits that civilian life does not offer. Then there is the deployments where your spouse is off to an assignment which does not allow you to follow. That can easily be a year. While your spouse is on deployment it is certain that you will deal with the day to day problems that he would should he be at home. Kids still have to go to the dentist, cars need to be repaired, house repairs made etc. With that in mind allow me to mention the military family network. It is outstanding.
off the base, into the post exchange or other government facilities. It is like your spouses social security number a real nice thing to have all the time. It’s the little things that count. Like knowing that when your spouse is in uniform you should walk on their left side in the event they have to salute. Standing in public and showing your affection while your spouse is in uniform is frowned upon. Remember, when the spouse puts on the uniform, a lot of things change for you as well. I recall that in Hawaii while assigned to the 25th Infantry Division my wife became pregnant with our first child. When it was time for the division to deploy to Vietnam, she had to quickly return to the United States within 72 hours to give birth. The point is no matter how much we missed not both being present for the birth, spouses and such special occasions will have to take a back seat. Birthdays, Anniversaries and special occasions, it does not matter. Your spouse may love you greatly, but the military will come first. The anniversary in January will have to be celebrated later when they return home. It makes no matter to the military how hard you worked to prepare that special dinner. Guys, if you are reading this, pay attention. Wives do not understand all the abbreviations we use in the military. Speak American. Are you good at or have you ever had a budget? Know how to spend wisely? If you go into the military you should know that handling finances is a must. Oh yes, lets not forget that very important military identification card. When you get married that is the first thing you must obtain The card will get you on and
However with all this said, after all these years and looking back at my military career the one thing I do regret is that I did not spend more time, or try and make more time with my two daughters who were ‘Army brats’. They did however have the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, which many other young people will have the opportunity to accomplish. So marriage in the military is a different life style. Some can adapt, some cannot. In any case, my daughters know how to properly make their own bed.
