roof of your mouth. You can feel your palate with your tongue. When something very cold touches the center of the palate, the cold temperature can set off certain nerves that control how much blood flows to your head. The nerves respond by causing the blood vessels in the head to swell up. This quick swelling of the blood vessels is what causes your head to pound and hurt. Some people call this a “brain freeze,” even though nothing is really happening in the brain — it’s all in the blood vessels of the head. And ice cream isn’t the only food that can make your head hurt. What Is Emotional Eating?
Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downing cookie after cookie while cramming for a big test. That’s why it helps to know the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, check in and see which type of hunger is driving it.
It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on.
“Comfort” Foods
We all have our own comfort foods. Interestingly, they may vary according to moods and gender. One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies. Bored people crave salty, crunchy things, like chips. Researchers also found that guys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, like steaks and casseroles. Girls go for chocolate and ice cream. This brings up a curious question: Does no one take comfort in carrots and celery sticks? Researchers are looking into that, too. What they’re finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment. This almost addictive quality may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset. Physical Hunger vs. Emotional Hunger We’re all emotional eaters to some extent (who hasn’t suddenly found room for dessert after a filling dinner?). But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or cycles of binging and purging. The trouble with emotional eating (aside

Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. When you don’t brush and floss regularly, bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in your mouth and between your teeth. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make your breath smell. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Myth #2: As long as you brush your teeth, you shouldn’t have bad breath. The truth is that most people only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds, which just doesn’t cut it. To sufficiently clean all the surfaces of your teeth, you should brush for at least 2 minutes at least twice a day. Remember to brush your tongue, too — bacteria love to hang out there. It’s equally important to floss because brushing alone won’t remove harmful plaque and food particles that become stuck between your teeth and gums.

Like steroids, hGH is only legal when prescribed by a doctor for a medical condition. Doctors prescribe hGH for people whose bodies don’t n a t u r a l l y make enough growth hormone, a condition known as growth hormone deficiency. Strong Anabolic steroids are controversial in the sports world because of the health risks associated with them and their unproven performance benefits. What Kids Want In a Coach Reviewed by: Kate M. Cronan, MD
“P

What Kids Say player makes. “I can tell those players aren’t having a good time,” she said. Wanting to be excellent at something is a great goal, but when coaches and parents push too hard, kids can get overly worried or push themselves too hard physically, leading to injuries. Some kids may even go on unhealthy diets to lose weight or gain weight to be better at their sport. With all this pressure in the air, there have been some awful incidents involving parents and coaches who have ended up yelling and fighting with each other. How uncomfortable for the players!
As if that’s not enough, here’s another reason why some changes may be needed: When sports become really competitive, kids who Did you think that kids would say are just average but like to play might not make the team or might “winning is everything”? control his or her temper.
Kids & Teens | SPORTS to work hard and work together. You go through ups and downs and often form really strong friendships with teammates. You also get a chance to surprise yourself. Playing a sport means you have a lot of chances to get better. Take it from 10-year-old Brandi, whose coach taught her how to hit a baseball. Before her coach showed her how, “I was swinging at mostly everything and I wasn’t holding the bat right,” she said.
“Everyone will quit if they’re having a miserable time,” said Sara, 12. But it’s also bad news if the coach doesn’t care at all about winning, said Katy, 11. She had a coach like that once. “Even if we were horrible at the drill, he would still say we were great and he wouldn’t even tell us how to improve.” Kids know they need to practice, it’s just that they don’t want it to stop being fun. Deja, 11, said that it’s a two-way street — coaches need to be supportive and team members need to listen to the coach and cooperate. Hannah said she learned a great lesson from her basketball coach this year. He told the team to “try your best and not care about winning.” They started out losing every game, but ended up winning a tournament!
Coaches Teach Life Lessons
Lots of kids told us how their coaches taught them important skills that made them better athletes. But kids also said that the best coaches do more than improve your swing or sharpen your three-point shot. Cobi, 10, said the best lesson he learned from a coach was this: “If I lose, it does not mean I am no good or lousy. And I do not need to get mad or upset if I lose.” Eleven-year-old Lizzy said her coach helped her work through jealous feelings she had because a friend was a really fast swimmer. “My coach showed me that I had to work for what I wanted and helped me reach my goal.”
A New Generation of Coaches
With all those great lessons learned, many boys and girls were already thinking about how they would handle their teams if they grow up to be coaches someday. “I will give them all a second chance,” said Jena, 11. Pauline, 12, said she’d be upbeat and encourage her players to lead a balanced life. “I would not have favorites,” she said. “I also would tell them that sports aren’t their only matter in life, that they have to focus on family and schoolwork, too.” Kristen, 12, said this: “I would be tough, but know when to stop and let them enjoy their sport.” Cobi sounds like a great coach in the making. If he’s a coach someday, he’d let everyone play, even the players who are not the best. Why? “That’s how they will become better.”
Kids also were very clear about what they do not like in a coach: someone who yells and can’t 26

Summer Fun Family Reunion Scrapbooking
reating a scrapbook will generate even more interest from your loved ones in those pictures taken at a reunion. It can be a shared project where everyone compiles their photos in one “all dressed up” photo album. But this isn’t the old dime-store album of plain, clear vinyl pockets in a grid where you insert your 4X6’s. If you’re the “lucky” one who gets to amass this family treasure I can help you get started.

Here’s How “Scrappers” Do It During the summer family picnic, or shortly thereafter, ask grandma or grandpa to write a handwritten reflection of the day’s events. If they can jot down things family members mention that are going on in their lives at the time it adds a nice, newsy touch. Keep a copy of the invitation to the reunion showing where it took place. scrapbook memories. Some ideas: What games and sports were played. Who traveled the furthest. Who makes the most popular dessert. Who grew the most since last year (taller that is!). Who’s the “sore loser” at card games. Who’s the biggest “ham”. Who sneaked in a nap. Are we having fun yet?? The photo collection you pick from could be sent to you or emailed as files for you to print yourself. The advantage here would be your ability to print them at a size best suited for your “creative genius”. Often a somewhat small size works for a number of the photos as there may be a lot of them. It depends on whether or not you receive vast numbers of pictures. The group photo should be at least 8 x10” in size. There is plenty of space for it as long as you get a 12 x 12” scrapbook. You could get a smaller size book but the large size lets you place numerous photos on a page with enough room for photo captions. To arrange photos on a page you can place them at various angles and overlap them a little. This adds a casual feel, lets you pack more onto a page and avoids the monotony of a traditional album. Don’t be afraid to crop some of the photos with only 1 or 2 people in them. At an event like this many of the photos will have similar backgrounds, and cropping captures what is important. Cut around the people with precision. Then you can place the cropped shape on a pretty or bright background. Little secret here....if that fiance keeps showing up in photos you can crop said newcomer and put in the scrapbook. Removal is easy if they don’t become a husband or wife after all. Gosh...had to say it though.

Robots The Future of Eldercare by Elaine Mora
dvances in technology have been astounding over the last decade. Electronics are starting to be built into everything from vacuums to toothbrushes and slowly, but surely, computers will become an invaluable part of every aspect of daily living. Someday, you’ll be able to take a shower and the bathroom will not only detect you, it will adjust the height of the sink to your level and set the water temperature to 96 degrees, just the way you like it.

Taking care of the elderly will become much easier, as well. Remember Rosie from The Jetsons? She was able to cook and clean and even read their son, Elroy, a bedtime story. It may be a long time before we see a robot that we’re actually able to communicate with, but robots that cook and clean are already in production. Think about your elderly loved ones.
Instead of having to send them away to a retirement home, they’ll be able to spend their remaining years at home with you, where they should be. And you won’t have to worry about leaving them alone or making sure they’re taking their medication. Now, it’s really going to take a long time before robots are advanced enough to fully take care of us, so don’t start believing that they’re going to take all our jobs. But robots, or more likely just computers, will be built into everything and make life easier. Instead of a robotic nurse pushing grandpa around in a wheelchair, the robot may actually be the wheelchair. Grandpa will simply have to think about which direction he wants to move and his robotic chair will follow. CONTINUE TO NEXT PAGE

The recipe for Longevity
he foundation of long-term relationships is essentially the same for everyone, even for single parents. Trust, communication, and love are three key factors that must exist in any relationship if it has any hope to last beyond a few months. As a single parent, though, you need to exert more effort in making a relationship work. After all, it’s not just yourself you have to consider; you need to think of your children’s welfare as well.

Even though you (and maybe even your partner) have kids, don’t let all your activities revolve around your domestic life. Although going out on fun outings with the children is a fun activity, make sure that you still have dates that involve only you and your partner. Constant communication and trust, of course, are two things that you should never do without. Say what you mean and mean what you say to avoid petty misunderstandings that often escalate to major fights. Don’t let niggling suspicions with no strong basis get the best of you. Learn to identify your insecurities. Do you really have a reason to worry, or is it all just in your head? Sometimes, even the best relationships end not because of indiscretion, but because of insecurity. You will never know what your partner thinks and does 100% of the time. The earlier you accept that fact, the more realistic your expectations of a relationship will be. Provide enough space
between you and your partner. Even with a special someone in your life, you still need time for yourself, as does your partner. The last thing either one of you need is the feeling of being emotionally suffocated in a relationship that hinders personal growth. Never lose your sense of yourself so that if things don’t work out, you can still fall back on your own strength to pull you through. During the course of the relationship, after you’ve made sure that your partner is trustworthy and decent, bring your children into the picture. This means letting them get to know your partner well, so that if your relationship progresses to something more serious (such as moving in together and maybe even getting married), your children will not be in for too much of a surprise.
Adult Living |HOME Being a single parent should never be a deterrent for long-lasting romantic relationships. If you and your partner are mature enough to handle commitments, the presence of children is even going to enhance your relationship instead of hamper it. Once you learn how to strike a balance between your romantic and domestic life, you can really have it all. o Top 7 Tips t Treat and
Prevent Depression
hronic illness, loss of family members and friends, social isolation, and financial worries all contribute to late-life depression. Though depression is one of the most common psychological disorders among those over 60 – affecting up to 15 percent of the population over 60 years of age – it is not a normal part of aging. To bolster your resilience, here are a few suggestions that can help you.
C 1.
Brew Up Herbal Relief
One herb, hypericin has been found to cause significant reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety. Several of its constituents all contribute, perhaps, synergistically to the increase in compounds that relieve depression. To try it, it is recommended using tinctures, or evening primrose infusions, in which the flowering tops have been steeped. Or use just plain old teas. Suggests steeping one to two teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes and drinking one or two cups of the tea daily for four to six weeks.

4.
Keep Yourself Busy
5.
Try Writing
Eating tuna, salmon, and other fish loaded with omega-3, a type of polyunsaturated fat, may help bolster your mood. The low levels of omega-3 in your nervous system may increase your vulnerability to depression. So regular consumption of fish once or twice a week may prevent the blues. Lobster, crab, shrimp, and other shellfish also contain some omega-3. If you keep yourself absorbed in gardening, woodworking, traveling, and other projects, it will prevent you from dwelling on whatever is making you feel unhappy. Write down a list of goals you want to accomplish in the next week or month and dive into them. Always have something to look forward to, and you will be less susceptible to the blues.
If you are uncomfortable talking about your depression with others or have no one whom you can share your thoughts with, write down your feelings in a journal. Writing will help you organize your thoughts and provide an outlet for your feelings that can help you organize your thoughts and provide an outlet for your feelings that can help dissolve unpleasant emotions. Alopecia
A Fancy Name for Hair Loss
lopecia means “baldness”; hair loss from skin areas where hair would normally be present. The word alopecia comes from the Greek word for fox, which is “alopex.” This term was used presumably because the condition caused the sufferer to have the appearance of a fox with mange.

same of both sides of the head. The cause of androgenetic alopecia is a combination of both heredity and hormones.
ALOPECIA AREATA:
Alopecia areata describes hair loss in clearly defined areas or patches. These typically circular-shaped patches can occur anywhere on the body, but are most common on the scalp or beard. The patches are There is more than one type of alopecia and treatments usually about the size of a quarter. The disease can cause a small depend on which type of alopecia is diagnosed. Adult Living |HEALTH CICATRICIAL ALOPECIA:
Cicatricial alopecia is divided into primary or secondary types. Primary cicatricial alopecia refers to a group of disorders that destroy the hair follicle and replace it with scar tissue. These disorders are rare. In some cases, hair loss can be gradual, without symptoms, and may go unnoticed for long periods of time. In other cases, hair is lost quickly and is accompanied by itching, burning, and pain. The scalp may show little signs of inflammation, or it can have scaling, redness, and pus, and may be darker or lighter in color. The inflammation that destroys the follicle is under the skin surface so there is usually no visible scarring on the scalp. In secondary cicatricial alopecias, the cause of hair follicle destruction is due to some external cause such as injury, burns, radiation, severe infection, or tumors. For both primary and secondary types of cicatricial alopecia, hair loss is permanent.
TRACTION ALOPECIA:
TREATMENT OF ALOPECIA AREATA:
Current treatments cannot actually stop alopecia. The treatments are targeted at attempting to stimulate the follicle to produce hair again. The choice of treatment recommended depends on age and amount of hair loss. The various treatments are most effective in milder cases of alopecia and no treatments have been shown to be universally effective.
CORTISONE INJECTIONS:
Cortisone is injected into the bare skin patches on a monthly basis. It takes about one month to know if any new hair will grow or not. This treatment will not prevent new patches of hair loss from developing.
CORTISONE PILLS:
Cortisone pills can be used for severe scalp hair loss. Cortisone pills are much stronger than cortisone injections and therefore have side effects that are more serious. If any hair is regrown, it is likely to fall out when the cortisone pills are stopped
TOPICAL MINOXIDIL:
Five percent topical minoxidil solution used twice a day may help hair growth on the scalp, eyebrows, and beard. Two percent topical minoxidil solution alone has not proven effective in alopecia areata. Sometimes a combination of cortisone cream and minoxidil is used. Minoxidil is not effective for treatment of total scalp hair loss.
ANTHRALIN CREAM OR OINTMENT:
Anthralin is a chemical used to treat psoriasis. Anthralin is applied to the bare patches once a day and is washed off after 30 to 60 minutes. Anthralin can irritate the skin, so the user must be careful to avoid getting anthralin near mucous membranes or in skin folds.
TOPICAL IMMUNOTHERAPY: Topical immunotherapy involves applying chemicals to the scalp to produce an allergic rash; this rash resembles poison oak or poison ivy. These treatments have been used in Canada and Europe but are not widely available in the United States.
LASER THERAPY:
Traction alopecia is hair loss resulting from the hair being pulled from the follicle, usually as a result of some hairstyles, or even from habitual twisting or pulling on one’s own hair.
Laser therapy is used in combination with Minoxidil, DHT Blockers. The theory behind the three-pronged approach is as follows: The Laser is used to stimulate the hair follicle, Minoxodil is used for increasing blood flow to the follicle, and the DHT Blocker is used to reduce levels of the hair-destroying DHT hormone. Follicle detoxifiers and rejuvenators may also be used in laser therapy.
ALOPECIA TOTALIS:
Hair Replacement is an important option for some hair loss sufferers, especially those experiencing alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis. Modern custom-made Hair Systems are a far cry from the old generation of hot, uncomfortable, and unflattering wigs. Custom Hair Systems such as the White Cliffs Mayfair are light and hygienic, and give the hair loss sufferer a front hairline.
In Alopecia totalis, the scalp is left entirely without hair.
ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS:
In Alopecia universalis, all body hair is lost, including the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, underarms, and pubis.
CURES FOR AREATA:
ALOPECIA
There is no cure for alopecia areata, although sometimes the hair will grow back on its own for unknown reasons.

How To Survive Participation In
Extreme Sports he popularity of extreme sports has blossomed and has moved from cult status to the mainstream of society. These sports, many of which were unknown beyond the small groups that followed them until recently, attract large audiences now due to the inherent risks of injury and even death. It seems that even the spectators benefit from the adrenaline rush that is received by the participants of these sports.
T
Some of the most popular extreme sports have been around for over forty years or more. Mountain climbing and biking, skateboarding and surfing are all considered extreme sports and have been around for decades. Skateboarding was actually invented by surfers who were seeking a way to cross train when the surf wasn’t up. These sports are now considered tame in extreme sports circles except for the niche extremes within them such as the big wave riding done by Laird Hamilton. This man surfs mountain sized waves over 50 feet tall that are so powerful he has to be towed into them by jet ski or dropped in from a helicopter!
With extreme sports it is very important that proper safety precautions be followed to avoid unnecessary injury and be as safe as possible. For example, most skateboarders will think nothing of buying the newest skateboard or new wheels and trucks but barely give any thought to safety equipment if at all. It is important to especially wear at least a helmet to avoid severe head injuries which can even prove fatal without a helmet. Here are a few things here that can help you. If you or your child has an interest in participating in an extreme sport it would be wise to speak to someone who is regarded as an expert in that particular sport before you get started. They will be able to give you insider information and head off any mistakes you might make out of ignorance. Unless you are from the planet Krypton and have a big red “S” painted in your chest, don’t think that you can immediately equal the skills and tricks that the pros in the sports perform. They all started in the same way that you are. No one is born able to walk and talk and learning one of these extreme sports is no different, it takes time, practice, and patience. Don’t rush out and try to accomplish a trick you see your hero do on TV, you may not survive it.

Wouldn’t it be grand if taking a summer vacation included affordability, and have all the amenities for both adults and children? If you haven’t made plans or would like to fit in one last trip before summer is over, take a look at staying at CoCo Key Water Resort in Orlando. It’s a one stop place of fun for all ages! My family had the opportunity to stay at in my opinion, “an A rated resort” for five days four nights during July fourth week, and we absolutely loved every second of it. From the moment we walked through the lobby we immediately felt that we walked through a piece of paradise. Our check in process took under 10 minutes and has we waited in line one of CoCo Key employees Phil, was kind of enough to give us a bit of history on the resort. It’s Time to Hire a Vet! Job Opportunities for Vets by Chuck Johnson .. U.S.Army/ MSG (Ret)
his is about the men and women many of who were in reserve units and also our active duty personnel, who have served honorably as well as many who have seen repeated tours of duty and now have returned to the homeland only to find that their jobs are now unavailable.
T
This is just wrong. When we ask these brave warriors to serve we have to have a plan to support them when they return. I do not see that today as being as strong as it should be. To often I read of a military person who lost their home or suffered some other hardship as a result of returning from active duty and while they did not suffer a serious injury, the inability to provide for their family is just as disabling.
making it known you will give preference to a vet if they are qualified. Here are some of the five jobs that recently look promising for military personnel however there are many more. Information Training Specialist: Remember our service personnel have worked with some of the most advanced technology out there They have a can do attitude and would work fine in any IT position. Police Officer: Working in the law enforcement field for over 20 years in the military I can testify these personnel are highly trained, reliable and can be a reliable asset to any police department. Math or Science Teacher: Need I say more. Is there any school district that could not use a motivated and highly trained educator to steer the careers of our young people today? Entrepreneur: Military personnel think out of the box. They have great ideas and would be a good risk for a new idea. Perhaps a banker reading this would give a serviceman or woman a chance in this area.
Civilian Public Service: Many of our men and women continue working with the United States Therefore I am asking any employer Government in another capacity such as federal service. Our government who is reading this article to stop is making every effort to make sure they receive priority for their military and take a deep breath. If this was service. your son or daughter would you want them to regret serving their It is not an easy world out there these days especially employment wise. country only to learn they have lost However we should never forget what a valuable resource these men and their employment when they were woman can be to any company. activated?
