FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS A

pril is here and we are winding down with just a few events left to get our dirt fix in. We have had a very unique second half of the season with some of our clubs having to reschedule a few times and ending up near the end of the schedule, which brings me to the rescheduled SADRA event. We were also a victim and had to try and come with a date and some property as our land owner perished in an accident which halted our Bermont property. So fast forward to March 17-18 and a new location. Our friends at the Sunrunners club graciously allowed us to use their Bartow property as they didn’t hesitate to offer up their prime real-estate. The only problem was that there was a Jeeping for Judd event scheduled at the last of February which was two weeks before our event. Besides not being able to work on the ridge, which included the start and the first two miles of our course, the last three miles coming back and the peewee course, we had all new property to learn. I will say this was probably the most challenging event we have done in some time. Parking over on the CFTR side of the property and driving our equipment over a few miles to reach our destination to begin cutting trail called for us to pack our lunch and just stay in the woods until almost dark and then come back to pack up and go home. Crossing the Peace River bridges brought some new adventures as it opened up some never touched woods and places that revealed that we were in someone else’s yard. From witnessing a 12 ft gator which we named BigMo to rattle snakes that caused several of us to purchase snake boots, things really got interesting. From naming the long jeep road after Mo, to finding the big dirt mound named Mt. Sadra we kept focused on the task and kept uncovering this property’s little secrets. We actually started having fun seeing who could find the coolest section as we traveled too far south and like to have cut too much trail, hence the 13.5 miles we came up with. Things got real serious as I was told to walk this way and do it quickly as there

O

ne of the first groups Betty and I met when we started attending Hare Scrambles was the Pee Wees. At first it was for the lollipops and trinkets we gave away. This led to meeting the parents and eventually praying for safety at the start of practice. Recently, I watched one of the Pee Wee girls move up to Mini class. It was her first race on the “big track”. Both she and the family were excited and more than a little nervous (understandable!). As we were all at scoring watching the riders exit the course, a little concern fell over the family as she did not come in. I’m listening on the radio as the sweepers are reporting “clear” from mile 1-7. On mile eight, the sweeper reports he sees her. At about the same time, she entered the chicane to the applause and relief of the whole crowd! Jesus told a similar story about a lost sheep. In Matthew 18:12-14, He said, “Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one? And if he finds it, doesn’t he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put? Your Father in Heaven feels the same way. He doesn’t want to lose even one of these simple

was a two foot rattle snake within striking distance and I do have the pictures of the retired intruder. Yes sir, after that things tightened up considerably as I watched every step even though I had my snake boots on. One day someone said something about “we better check the mileage” as we kept going south and deeper and deeper in no man’s land. Sure enough we had 13.5 miles and I’m thinking we must have gone nuts by going this far. Long story short, I enlisted a AA rider to give us an idea of what we had or had too much of as he did a lap to give us some feedback. Sure enough we were a little long on time so out came the half mile or so. Come race time the lap times were right there in the mid 25-26 minutes. Sweet...except for the lack of rain which caused havoc and the extreme fog that rolled in Sunday morning which wore its welcome out. The decision was made to delay for an hour, it was that bad! After the races got started it was a pleasure watching you guys and gals tackle the course with everyone riding within their limits. I hope everyone enjoyed the event as much as we did. The amount of effort showed by the club and the time given was just unreal, way to raise the bar SADRA. Also, to the Sunrunner club members for giving us a hand and all of you that helped on race weekend, I personally want to thank you as it was greatly appreciated. I must give a shout out to Carol for stepping up as our trail boss and to one of our clubs young up and comers Gregory Bryant, this kid worked his tail off and I think he is ready for more responsibility next year. Also to Robert M. for giving us anything we needed and sharing a lot of laughs and some catfish. Thank you to all the volunteers including all you girls and guys doing the sign up and my lovely wife Teresa for heading up the group. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul believers. The story is so powerful it was repeated in Luke 15:4-7, “Suppose one of you had a hundred sheep and lost one. Wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until you found it? When found, you can be sure you would put it across your shoulders, rejoicing, and when you got home call in your friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Celebrate with me! I’ve found my lost sheep!’ Count on it—there’s more joy in heaven over one sinner’s rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue. The point is Jesus wants that personal relationship with us. He risked it all, even to death on the cross so we, those lost sheep, can be rescued. As He said, “count on it” (!), He is ready and waiting to rescue us. We just need to open our hearts and let Him! We have started “The Good Race” joy service every Saturday night from 7:30 to 7:45 pm. We meet at the CMA tent on vendor’s row. Bring a chair and come join us! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

ello fellow FTR members!

It is that time of the year again‌. BANQUET TIME! The members of the banquet committee have been working diligently to begin preparations for this year's awards banquet. I would like to invite each and every one of you, your family and your friends to attend this year's awards banquet. It is being held, once again, at the Ocean Center in sunny Daytona Beach Florida ON August 4th, 2018! This year we will be in the 93,028 square foot exhibit hall, giving us more than DOUBLE the space we had last year in the arena! With that being said there is plenty of room for activities and our wonderful vendors to set up inside the exhibit hall, bringing us all to one massive space. The food at the banquet will be concession style again this year. The concession stand will be solely for the use of FTR banquet attendees, unlike last year. The ticket prices do NOT include any food. Pre-purchased tickets are $10 per person 13 years and older, $5 per person for ages 5 to 12, and any person under the age of 5 will be free. There is a $5 increase for tickets that will be purchased at the door the day of the event. We are working on getting the link for ticket purchases up and running at this time. The link to reserve a hotel room is on the FTR forum under the banquet section. The rooms are $109.00 per night. If you have troubles booking or receive an error message please send me a text or call my cell (listed at the bottom of this announcement) so I can get more rooms opened up. ROOMS MUST BE RESERVED BEFORE JULY 3RD, 2018!! We are roughly around the halfway mark of the season, so I hope you all have been thinking about who you would nominate for Pit Mom/Dad and Sportsman of the year! This year's banquet will be SEMI FORMAL attire!! The

banquet will be later in the evening so all attendees can go enjoy the beach and other fun attractions during the day. We ask that anyone attending the banquet stays for the entire length of the banquet, out of respect and support for fellow racers (this was an issue last year). Randy Hawkins from Am-Pro Yamaha will be on hand and will be helping with the on stage ceremony. Once again if anyone would like to volunteer the day of the banquet or with prior planning, please contact Lisa or Lacey Nordle. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! WHAT'S HE RACING NOW? R

ound 6 of the series was at the annual Mondon Hill event put on by Suncoast Trail Blazers. When Alex Lugar got hurt prior to this race my first thought was that I hope he gets well soon. My second thought was this would be a perfect time to race a 125 since he is sidelined and his poor bike would just be collecting dust. So I sent the boss (his mom) a message and asked if I could steal it for the weekend. After a nail biting 8 minutes, she replied with the green light. Not only did I get to race it, but since Alex was already coming to get a work credit at that event, the 2015 yz125 got delivered and brought home from the track. About that delivery: it was late. I had to ride practice on Travis Berry's yz250x. When race time came I had to jump on a bike that I had never spent a single minute on. The good news is that Moto4Play does the suspension for both Alex and I so this bike was valved very similar to mine. We had a big turnout in 30+ that day. With 13 riders on the line I got the 125 started first, but Clay and Shawn out CCd me to the first corner and I didn't see them for more than a few minutes. I managed to keep the 125 in 3rd place until the finish though, even with a pit stop using my first IMS quick fill system. Lets talk about the bike. There are 2 kinds of racers out there. The ones that learned on a 125 and took it to its limits before moving up, and those that jumped up early. I'm the former. Because of that I get along with the 125s just fine. Get on the gas early, and brake late if you have to. Correcting any mistake you make is effortless on these bikes, unless the mistake you made was slowing down. When you get down to it, they're

gutless. What that does is it forces you to master the fundamentals. You can't square off a berm on a 125 and expect to get back up to speed. You have to aim for the entrance of that berm and ride it all the way until the end. When you see guys like Alex getting the A highpoint on this 125, or Jesse getting the overall, just think of the amount of mental work it takes to get every little thing right. The right gear, the right rpm, the right clutch feathering, for 2 hours. Engine 125/144. Get with it Yamaha Brakes 10/10. It stops Suspension 10/10. Get a yz/yzf and have Moto4Play revalve it. Your body will thank you.

or the first time in twenty years the AMA Monster Energy Supercross was back in Tampa Bay and the Sarasota Area Dirt Riders/Old School Dirt Riders club had the opportunity to be a part of the action as the official flagging crew. Our SADRA club president and FTR member Scott Bryant tirelessly worked to organize the day with Feld Motorsports and I wanted to give him a big shout out and thank you for that. If you ever have the chance to flag a Supercross do it. It makes for a really long day but you get to see a lot of racing and it was interesting as the qualifing sessions went along I had to wave my flag a lot less. We worked longside the AMA officials and the regular Feld course workers and let me tell you they take their job very serious. It's the flaggers and course workers that keep everyone safe and sound when mistakes are made. It was a blast being six feet away from the fastest riders in the sport watching them navigate rythm sections, hitting a table top and getting hard on the brakes for a quick left hand turn shooting them across the start straight to attack the rest of the track. What an amazing experience it was. Our whole team did an amazing job and were highly complimented all night long with only one piece of advice thay was given stuck in our heads..."Don't F* it up!"

Dissecting the emom: How and Why You Should Be Using Them in Your Training I

n this article I’m going to explain the purpose, structure, and some variations of the ever so popular EMOM style workout. EMOM stands for Every Minute On the Minute and is a form of training that sometimes will provide a consistent but variable rest interval for one or many exercises. There are many ways to set up and structure different EMOMs to get the most impact out of them. In this article, I want to dissect the different ways you can use this workout structure to add a little variety into your training that can produce awesome results! My first introduction to the “on the minute” style of performing an exercise was by Louie Simmons. Simmons is a famous powerlifter and strength coach who created Westside Barbell and the popular Conjugate Method of training. Within that system there is a “speed” day dedicated to moving the barbell fast often with accommodating resistance and with abbreviated rest periods. 2 to 3 reps every minute is how I used to program these days and found them to be challenging and a fun variation to training. Flash forward a few years to Rob Orlando’s strong man style training blog and I was introduced into a variety of different versions of the EMOMs that used multiple exercises. This is a hybrid superset, or circuit. The basic structure is simple and effective and keeps you mentally involved in your training. With a running clock, you perform the exercise or exercises you chose to incorporate into your EMOM. Perform one set on the first minute. When you are finished, you rest into the next minute and go again. Rinse and repeat. Your creativity is the only limiting factor in these workouts, but I will outline how I program EMOMs and give you a few downloadable examples you can use. I favor 3 styles of EMOMs: single minutes, alternating minutes, and mono-structural. Here is how I break them down. Single Minutes: Rather than labeling these single exercises, I use the term single minute because you can actually do a series of movements every minute. This is the traditional version of the EMOM and it’s pretty straight forward. I like these for warm ups and finishers to get some added volume in. I usually set these up for shorter durations like 10 to 12 minutes. After that, most people tend to get bored. Alternating Minutes: By alternating minutes, you can add some length to the workout because you are going every other minute or every 3 minutes or whatever you pick. Here is how it works: select several exercises and perform some on even minutes and others on odd minutes. You can even go up the chain and do something different every minute, but you might get confused at what is next. I prefer the even minute/odd minute approach, and sometimes I’ll program 3 or 4. I’ll have an example for you, don’t worry. Mono-Structural: Mono-structural exercise typically involves some steady state exercise like running, biking, rowing, etc. It’s aerobic in nature and typically longer duration than weight training. You can sneak in some lifting into your aerobic training by using EMOMs. This will challenge your ability to stabilize, recover, between minutes. Imagine crashing, picking up the bike, starting it and then returning to racing pace. Here is how they work: pick an exercise such as 30 minutes of rowing (feet not strapped in) and do 3-5 burpees every minute. You’ll accumulate about 30 seconds of rowing per minute and 90 plus burpees. I “score” these

26 www.floridatrailriders.org

By Coach Tyler Coody

workouts by distance on the aerobic work. This will keep you from sandbagging the mono-structural piece. This leads me to my next and last topic of discussion on EMOMs. When do you use them and how do you structure them? You can see by my last example that the accumulation of training volume can put you in the weeds very quickly. It’s easier to manage in the first two methods. Start slow and remember that as you get fatigued, the work duration might take longer which means your rest duration is shortened. The main goal is to get a lot of work done in such a way that you can recover and keep your movement standards high. If you being forced to rush through your work before the minute ends, you need to back off a bit. If you cannot finish within the minute, you are done. A simple rule of thumb is to add up your reps for each movement before you start. This will be an eye opener and allow you to reconsider your choices. For example, if you program 25 burpees on the even minutes and 25 squats on the odd minutes for 20 minutes you’ll end up with 250 reps of both exercises. That could take you to a dark place. By the way that was an exaggerated example and not a challenge. Try to explore this method for yourself and see how it works. There a lot of advantages to using EMOMs as a training tool. If you are running short on time, you can ease into an EMOM for your warm up or movement prep work with time to stretch and warm up between minutes. They can be structured to be an easy day or the most miserable thing you’ve ever done in your entire life. Or somewhere between. I will have a free downloadable PDF of a few of my favorite EMOM’s at www. grenadefitness.com. You can follow them exactly or change out the exercises and use the structure as you see fit. As always, let me know if you have any questions or topics for future articles. You can email me at coodyt@grenadefitness.com. Get Better. Tyler Coody, MS, CSCS coodyt@grenadefitness.com
