FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS A

s we have passed the half way mark, our schedule is really getting busy. Here it is February already and before you know it we will be starting to look at the 2018-19 sanction meetings. As the old saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. I have been able to ride a few events in the last couple months with putting the fun factor first and with that came a lot of great memories. I must give a shout out to the PBTTR club for promoting a true H/S which had everything south Florida had to offer. This also was one of the best arrowed courses I have witnessed in a long time, kudos to those that handled that. Speaking of courses and those who have not heard, Sadra will be hosting their event at the Bartow property this March thanks to a very generous Sunrunners club and the folks at Clear Springs. Our previous property in Punta Gorda has been put on hold for awhile. We have been hard at work using the south southwest section of the property while going across both Peace River bridges and finding a section of property that will take your breath away. One trail going by the name of Rattle Snake Gulch has caused several of us to purchase snake boots, I don’t think it’s that bad but I’m not taking any chances! Our first BOD meeting took place at the Suncoast event, Jan. 6th, with several new members coming on board and a first time scheduled BOD meeting at a H/S event. I would have to say it was a huge success as we almost had 100% participation

and many guests were on hand with a very positive opinion on the location. I want to Thank TF Racing for offering their hospitality by providing the enclosed room for our meeting. While the temperature was a bit cold on the outside, our comfort level was near perfect as the heaters kept us all pretty toasty. We had some really positive discussions and some great proposals as we came away knowing that teamwork will always prevail. We look to continue this opportunity to conduct business on location and keep our members from having to travel on a weekend as it also gives any member a chance to participate and witness the inner workings of FTR. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul P.S. A big Shout Out to Jacob Gilliam for contributing some great stories on being a Factory rider this season. Hoping he can ride every brand possible while still running up front. I don’t think this has ever been done in FTR, so history is being made. LOL Great Job Jacob!

Starting Line to Checkered Flag…

If you walk the starting grid on race day, take note of the blue “blessing” stickers on many of the bikes. Those stickers are a bold reminder of God’s love and protection. The rider and his or her family received a special prayer asking for Jesus to “cover” the rider while on the course and to give the family and friends “a peace” while the rider is dodging trees! Do they work? Just ask those who have them. I have had report after report of “something” keeping me on course or just

second.

missing a root at the just the last

When God says He loves you and that you are His children, He means it! And God can’t lie. The best story I heard was from a Dad who was introducing me to his wife. The Dad told his wife,”this is the guy who prays for our son when he rides. I’m not sure those prayers work because he still keeps going down.” I quietly said, “Oh those prayers are working… He gets back up!” Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

I finished the race in 4th place, and 13th overall. Not as well as I usually finish on my YZ, but I'm not blaming the bike. A few more rides on it and I'm sure I could be back in the top 10. Engine 10/10. I'm starting to think it doesn't take much for an engine to impress me. Brakes 10/10. Brembos are always top notch Suspension 8/10. It felt nice most of the race, but I still bottomed it out. I haven't done that since I was on the XR650l. Bottom line: This bike wouldn't hold anyone back, I'm sure of it. If you're a fan of KTM go ahead and buy one.

WHAT'S HE RIDING NOW?

ound 5 Of the HS series was in Punta Gorda aboard Stuart Dickson's 2015 KTM 350SX. Before this race I'd only spent about 2 minutes on one of these bikes at Croom. I knew there had to be something about them since they seem to be filling up the woods all over the country. A true gift to the men and women who just couldn't decide between the 450 and 250. My biggest concerns about this thing were the rekluse clutch and the e-start only. Neither were a problem. After practice I made zero changes to the bike. The suspension was already done by Moto4Play and other than me bottoming it on a ditch or two it worked just how I wanted it to. The button got me a sweet holeshot but it didn't last long. I rode up the side of one of the whooped out ditches and Shawn came flying by right down the middle. Soon after that I made a small mistake and Clay went by, and finally I made a 3rd mistake and dropped her to give Chad an easy way around me. So there I am, on this fancy new 350, all the way back in 4th place. At least it gave me another hour and 40 minutes to shake down this ride. This track had some really fast straights and the GPS says this bike topped out at 64MPH with it's current gearing. The Rekluse clutch was the star of this show. It's never been in my budget but I can absolutely see why people buy these. Of course it didn't stall when I dropped it, and it allowed me to be lazy a few times in the woods and keep it in a higher gear. Besides that, my old habits made me use the clutch lever just as if the rekluse wasn't there.

Around The Pits BANQUET INFO

H

ello fellow FTR members!

It is that time of the year again‌. BANQUET TIME! The members of the banquet committee have been working diligently to begin preparations for this year's awards banquet. I would like to invite each and every one of you, your family and your friends to attend this year's awards banquet. It is being held, once again, at the Ocean Center in sunny Daytona Beach Florida ON August 4th, 2018! This year we will be in the 93,028 square foot exhibit hall, giving us more than DOUBLE the space we had last year in the arena! With that being said there is plenty of room for activities and our wonderful vendors to set up inside the exhibit hall, bringing us all to one massive space. The food at the banquet will be concession style again this year. The concession stand will be solely for the use of FTR banquet attendees, unlike last year. The ticket prices do NOT include any food. Pre-purchased tickets are $10 per person 13 years and older, $5 per person for ages 5 to 12, and any person under the age of 5 will be free. There is a $5 increase for tickets that will be purchased at the door the day of the event. We are working on getting the link for ticket purchases up and running at this time. The link to reserve a hotel room is on the FTR forum under the banquet section. The rooms are $109.00 per night. If you have troubles booking or receive an error message please send me a text or call my cell (listed at the bottom of this announcement) so I can get more rooms opened up. ROOMS MUST BE RESERVED BEFORE JULY 3RD, 2018!! We are roughly around the halfway mark of the season, so I hope you all have been thinking about who you would nominate for Pit Mom/Dad and Sportsman of the year! This year's banquet will be SEMI FORMAL attire!! The

O

banquet will be later in the evening so all attendees can go enjoy the beach and other fun attractions during the day. We ask that anyone attending the banquet stays for the entire length of the banquet, out of respect and support for fellow racers (this was an issue last year). Randy Hawkins from Am-Pro Yamaha will be on hand and will be helping with the on stage ceremony. Once again if anyone would like to volunteer the day of the banquet or with prior planning, please contact Lisa or Lacey Nordle. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Lacey and Lisa Nordle 352-457-5030 (Lacey) or 352-748-4071 (Lisa) laceynordle@gmail.com The SADRA H/S on March 17, 18 will be at a new location this year. We will be at the Bartow property thanks to the generously of the Sunrunners Club and Clear Springs Corporation. We will be using the west, southwest section of the property with some major changes in terrain. It will be almost like a south Florida course with sand and some palmettos, yes palmettos on the Bartow property. Along with some major off camber single track trails, a huge hill climb, pine woods and the ever popular hard pak terrain off the start, we have a tremendous amount of variety. Crossing both Peace River bridges will get you over and back from some really nice woods trail and some open pasture. Parking and the start will be at the same location as the last event held here, so come early to get a great parking spot on the ridge. Please keep our pets leased and use our trash cans as we look forward to providing you with one great course. Randy Faul Sadra

ur family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the safety crew who assisted Ethan during the B200 start at Snake River. BC Drymond and Steve Nutter were the first to get to Ethan within a minute of his crash. Ethan's helmet visor was jammed inside of the helmet blocking Ethan's vision while trying to get steady on his feet. One look at Ethan's arm and they immediately made the call to Donny who arrived within a few seconds after. Together they worked to clear the area for other riders to pass, and set Ethan's arm into a temporary splint and sling while watching him carefully for signs of a concussion. Two scary minutes passed when Ethan seemed to be losing consciousness and his response time was very slow. Donny assured me that this was "to be expected" and to get him medical attention. To this safety crew, it probably felt like a normal assist alongside the track, but to us that 15 minutes felt like years! For those I can't name that helped get Ethan back to our camp, Thank you. We are incredibly grateful for these men and women, and the selfless hours of volunteering they do for all FTR riders. We're hopeful to never need this crew again, but knowing they are there makes all the difference in the world. The Turner Family

y name is Monika Blahackova, I am 25 years old. I am from the Czech Republic, currently living in Sarasota, FL...This was my introduction when I was asked to share my riding story in front of 3 strangers, 4 cameras and a drone. Last summer I was contacted to work on a small video project with Toyota and Monster Energy Supercross. The project was aiming to shine light on female riders of the sport in 2018. Toyota was looking to tell stories of women who shared passion in a male dominated sport and how it defied individual character. The videos would be released during commercial break every week of Supercross. Day one of filming didn’t go as planned, Jacob and I drove up to Croom at 9am only to sit under a gazebo for two hours in the rain. We assured the camera crew the rain would stop... but it didn’t. Based on the forecast we decided to head to Hardrock but by the time we were half way there the weather had followed us north. At that point we decided to fuel our bodies with some healthy Steak 'n Shake and return back to Croom. At 2pm Jacob and I finally geared up. Following us around by foot, the Yankee camera crew were sweating bullets as they lugged their expensive cameras through the sandy, wet, and humid Croom forest. As soon as the camera started rolling we had a park ranger approach us for a filming permit; Of course we didn’t have one. So, to the permit office the crew went. Two hours later and an extra expense for Feld Entertainment and we had a permit and had until dark to hit just about every berm, puddle, and hill in the park... multiple times. Show biz is tough! Day two took place at my dad’s shop in Sarasota and focused on family interviews. Most people know my dad as the talkative type but it sure was a shocker when he froze in front of the camera. At one point the shop was lit in LED lights, we used my bike to create a smoky environment and I was asked to twirl around and repeat “stay tuned for more Monster Energy SX on Fox” more times than I could count. We wrapped up filming for day two around 10 pm but at the end of the day I really did look like I belonged on the opening ceremonies, all that was missing was having Tomac and Roczen standing next to me. The two long days of filming sure made for a lot of great memories to say the least! The short video will be released during Tampa Supercross. It will be broadcast at the arena and aired on Fox on Saturday, February 24th. I feel extremely appreciative to have been one of the few girls to be a part of such a cool movement. Thanks to social media I have not only made great memories, I have made new friends in several states across the US and hopefully influenced some girls to chase their dreams! -Monika Miss Supercross contender 2025

5 Nutrition Mistakes to Avoid

he beginning of each New Year is often met with lofty goals of fitness, health, weight loss and many more resolutions. While working in the fitness industry for the past decade, January is often known as the busiest time of the year for beginners and those who are re-energized to change their appearance and performance during the next 12 months. Although the intentions are there, there are many mistakes the people make that often prevent them from succeeding in reaching their goals or even keeping their resolutions. Although the heart of the problem lies primarily in the goal setting part of the equation, this article will outline the 5 most common nutrition mistakes that I see in first month or two after New Year’s. 1. Not knowing where you are starting from. In order to properly set up your nutrition program, you need to be honest with yourself and where you are beginning. Often times, people will pick a popular diet plan or try to eat a certain amount of calories without really knowing how it may affect them personally. This can be detrimental to weight loss and it is a very common mistake. Weight lost in general, from a nutritional standpoint, is really pretty simple. It’s an energy balance issue. If you want to lose, you need to eat less calories than you burn. If you want to gain weight you will need a surplus of calories. How much more or less will depend on how quickly you want to achieve your goal. Typically slower is better, although it doesn’t make the social media posts look as good. In order to find out where you are you need to track your calories for your current diet. You need to know what your current intake is before you can monkey around with the new and improved range. If you are using an app or calorie calculator on the internet, do not over estimate your activity level. If anything, under estimate your workout intensity and frequency. This will make the numbers more manageable. After you find out what your calorie intake is for about a week or so, subtract or add according to your goals. In general, a good rule of thumb is 3,500 calories per pound. If you want to lose 1 pound per week, you need to take 500 calories per day away from what you are currently eating. 2.Too much too fast. The beginning of the year is met with a lot of life changing goals, renewed energy, and enthusiasm. Try not to add too many variables into your new program. Otherwise you won’t know what exactly is moving the needle. In March when your progress slows down a little, this information will be your saving grace. For example, if on January 1st you start the Otter Block training program for weight loss from www. grenadefitness.com, begin eating a strict diet with limited carbs and intermittent fasting at the same time you will have a hard time maintaining all of those variables in the long term, and you won’t know exactly what is giving you the best results. I tell people to begin any new exercise program first for a week or two, then get their breakfast on target, then

lunch, then dinner. That way, over the course of about 3-4 weeks, they have a manageable program and some useful information about what had the biggest affect. 3. Cutting out entire macro nutrients. Macro nutrients are the big 3: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. If possible, try to avoid cutting out an entire group. We can debate the pros and cons of ketogenic diets and low fat diets, but for the purpose of general nutrition, play around with the ratios of each but do not forbid yourself from any of the macronutrients for a long period of time. This will help you to stay consistent and sane during your weight loss journey. As a side note, if that is a topic you all are interested in, leave me some feedback and I will go into further detail. 4. Being unorganized. I am fortunate enough that I don’t have to hunt my dinner each night. I’m thankful because I have no idea where to find wild tacos. Being organized about your nutrition can really help keep you on track and keep you from binging at the nearest fast food chain. Don’t worry if your food prep doesn’t look like a picture on Pinterest. Just do the best you can to plan your meals and have food prepared when you are ready to eat. I tend to cook my proteins ahead of time because they take the longest to cook. My carbs and fats are typically more “grab and go” type items. So, dust off that old Tupperware set and plan your meals for the week. This includes snacks. That will keep you away from the dreaded vending machine. 5. Doing cleanses. There’s not much research that I’ve ever read that supports the idea that you need to cleanse your body of the food you’ve been consuming. In fact, just by cleaning up your diet and eating healthy, your body naturally returns to a healthier state. If you need a hard re-start and that helps you to stay on track, I’m not convinced it will hurt you in any way. Just know that you don’t need a 21 day cleaning program with supplements that will help you clean out your system. A lot people seem to be counting down the days until their cleanse is over and they can go back to eating more normally… then they will need another cleanse in a month or two. It’s a vicious cycle. I hope this helps everyone to avoid some of the pitfalls of New Year’s dieting. There is no quick fix and it may take some adjusting, but proper healthy nutrition is actually pretty simple although it’s not EASY. Just eat real food and move as often as you can. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for future topics, please email me at: coodyt@grenadefitness.com. Get Better. -Tyler Coody, MS, CSCS coodyt@grenadefitness.com

Andrew Miller

How long have you been in FTR? Andrew: This is my first year in FTR. Barry: I joined in 2008. What bikes do you race and what number and why? Andrew: KTM 50sx Mini, in Peewee C. Number 523c, because it’s my birthday. Barry: KTM 250xc, in Super Senior A and Sportsman 2. Numbers 214A and 214x. Like many, its my birthday. Yep, Valentine’s Day. Sponsors? Andrew: Sponsored by Mom and Dad Barry: Rider Support from Leatt, Dunlop, Ogio and Odi What changes would you like to see in FTR? Communication, Rules, track conditions. Andrew: I really like it! Barry: While we all have opinions from time to time, FTR does a great job. We are, and have been, involved in many other types of racing and sanctioning bodies, and FTR stands out among them. Race day coordination, support and family atmosphere is unmatched. Who comes to the races with you? Andrew: Dad and Paw Paw. Mom, Ryan and Amanda come to a few too. Best friends on the track? Andrew: Everyone. I meet new riders at each race and like them all. Thoughts when lining up for the start? Andrew: I think about trusting in God and he will help me win. Barry: (When Andrew is on the line) How cool it is seeing him lined up with 20+ other Peewee riders, and their energy and excitement. Oh, and I pray his mechanic (me) doesn’t let him down, lol. (When I’m on the line) Don’t crash, you have to work on Monday! How do you stay focused when you are racing and not in the position you would like to be in? Andrew: By believing in God. Barry: Always trying to set the best example for Andrew. Never give up, and always push forward. How did you find out you made the cover? Andrew: Dad sent a picture to Mommy’s phone and she told me after school Barry: A fellow RCDR member sent a text saying “Nice cover shot”. I replied with “WTH are you talking about.” I had no idea. It was an awesome surprise. What was everyone's reaction? All: All of us were so surprise and excited that Andrew had that opportunity. Oh, and we all laughed for quite a while that both of us had our tongues sticking out. That was the best part. We called Ronnie (at HBD) and asked if he could make a poster, so we could surprise Andrew for Christmas. Ronnie took it one step up and made a banner that’s taller than Andrew! Andrew: Everyone said “You’re the best racer ever!” Tell us about opening up the banner? Where is it now? Andrew: I felt really excited, and I wanted to thank Mom and Dad. Its hanging in my room now, right over my bed. I love it! What does the teacher and your family and friends think of your cover fame? Andrew: They keep telling how awesome it is, and I will be in the championship.

I

All About Madison

Snider

am 12 year old girl who lives in Dade City Florida. I was born August 31st 2005.I’ m currently an A/B honor roll student in the 7th grade at Centennial Middle School. Ilike almost any kind of animal. I have 3 dogs, a cat, a rabbit two fancy rats, and two sugar gliders. I enjoy fishing and hunting with my parents and anytime I can spend swimming is always a great time. When I’m not racing I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family. My racing number is 831 which is the month and day I was born. Racing Information: I have been racing for a total of 6 years. Two years in Motocross at the Dade City Motocross Track and I’m currently in my 4th year in Hare Scrambles with the FTR Series. The first year in Motocross I raced in the 70 cc mini quad class and I won the 70 cc mini quad championship plus had high points for the quadseries. The second year Iraced in Motocross I raced the 100 cc mini quad class and finished second in the championship that year. I currently race a 90ccmini quad in the Quad Super Pee Wee A class at the Florida Trail Riders Series in the Hare Scramble Division. My first seasonI finished in 3rdplace in points while racing in the Quad Super Pee Wee B.My second year in FTR I started racing in the Quad Super Peewee A Class I finished 11th place in points, my second year I finished 4th in points and this year I’m currently leading the points in my class. I have also raced in several GNCC races in Florida, Georgia and West Virginia. These races are very competitive because the fellow racers are from all over the United States all wanting to race their best because it’s the highest level of racing until moving up the ranks and possibly becoming a Pro. I’ve also just recently went and done another racing series with the Southern Dirt Track Association which does TT and flat track racing. In my first races in that series I finished 2nd in TT and 1st in flat track Future Accomplishments: I want to hopefully improve well enough to win a championship in the FTR series and I also hope to race more GNCC, TT and flat track races in the future. I’m practicing extra hard at home plus at my local track. I’m looking forward to a long and successful racing future on the local and national tracks.

2018 EAGLES NEST ENDURO F

Danial and Shelby Dunson

Cole Simon, Steve Carpentier, and David Sharp

irst off I have to thank my dad Shelby Dunson at Double D Powersports and my brother Kyle Turnis at Moto4Play for prepping my bike and plastic welding my gas tank so the threads would stop leaking on my petcock. I needed every drop of fuel this weekend. On the first test, I was riding extremely skittish because I didn’t want to get hurt and I don’t think I got my HR over 130. On the start of the last race test I realized that I had no fuel and a fellow racer gave me a water bottle’s worth of gas to bring it home. By the end of the race, I was singing and having a really good time on the bike. The club,River City Dirt Riders, did an excellent job on the track layout for Saturday, saving only the best trails for the special tests. You could say this was the easiest race of the year because the transfer sections were so long and we had 2 lunch breaks! I do wish the average speed was faster like other enduros. The resets were so long that I started to get cold while waiting, which is a shame that they did not take advantage of the ISDE format. In the ISDE format, they remove the late penalty and force those that are late to assume a new row. Slower riders can be late all day and never hour out. They could start on row one and finish 59 minutes late on row 140. This is a great way to introduce new riders to racing in a low stress environment. All this being said, I had a great weekend of racing and I am pumped on my 12th overall and B Highpoint. It was literally my first ride on my Ohlin’s and can’t wait for the next race when I start gelling more with my bike. -Danial Dunson

Cole and Willie Simon

Our only goal was to finish and that we did! 130ish miles (209+ km) of challenging trail in 2 days. Won two golds at the Eagles Nest ISDE qualifier, dad won a gold and silver. Massive thank you to everyone who stopped to ask if I was alright!- Monika and Stan Blahackova Managed 3rd both days. Track was rough, mud spots got worse while others got better. Overall a great weekend really. Happy with the performance just need the endurance to perform the same the second day. -Spencer StJohn

Well today did not go my way started out great on the first section took a early lead on the time. Went to start my bike for the 2nd test and would not start scrambled did all I could to figure it out. Ended up getting towed in and was able to figure out that my regulator fuel pump control wire were smashed under the tank. Can’t thank Mark Beebe for letting me steal parts off his bike to get back out and salvage my day and get to ride at-least. Looking forward to trying to put a good day together tomorrow and getting up on the top step. Also huge thanks to Tom Fleming for helping to diagnose my problem and button the bike up while I could gear up and get back on my row in time for the 2nd half of the day. -Charles Mann

The track was great, with a great mix of conditions from sand whoops to Palmetto trails to mud holes and straights. The first day I won b 200 with a overall of 81th, only because I had bike trouble on the first loop, bike wouldn't run right, kept dying out. I was able to fix that problem on the track. Sunday the track got super choppy in the woods and the sand whoops turned to jumps, and the mud had some pretty deep ruts that I found unfortunately. I again won b 200 and got 27th overall for ftr. The club did a great job. Plus I had a blast riding all the transfer sections with Jesse Ansley who was on my line. I really liked the ISDE qualifier format with the test sections.

Now this is how you clean a bike after a two day ISDE Qualifier Enduro... Danial Dunson style..hot water low pressure wash =squeaky clean!
