reetings all, as I write this it is 98 degrees outside and I don’t want to leave my chair. Rain is coming so the window of opportunity for doing anything outside right now is very small. Now that qualifying for Millville (Spring Creek) is cancelled due to weather out there also, guess I will reflect on the first half of this summer as we are in August now with another month to go before we see some relief. I can’t complain too much as some of my summer has been up in the northern states before they started getting into the 90’s or triple digits. Referring to the old school names of some of these events, Mt. Morris (High Point) was on the radar as a must do along with the following week at WW M/X. As I wasn’t alone at either one of these races, a lot of you had the same idea as we would have had enough FTR members to have our own race. Just sayin, but there was a lot of FTR folks roaming around especially at the Florida round. Hanging out at one of the top gncc factory riders residence and getting up to speed on what FTR’s Ben Parson has been doing was one of the highlights’ of the long weekend. As I recognized a 125 sitting there without a rider, I remembered that our guy was on injured reserve resulting from casing a huge double getting ready for the 125 all star race. As his dad and I took up

the young man’s job duties at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Butler Brothers race rig, it became apparent that this might turn into a job real quick as there was lots to do and this was just on Thursday. Remembering the Butler family back in the early days of FTR, their dad and entire family of boys raced at one time or another. From moving more into MX to now running his own team, Forrest Butler has done a phenomenal job of establishing this team as a weekly threat at the pro level of MX and SX while bringing along long time sponsor Palmetto Motorsports and newly acquired HBD graphics, both Florida companies that has supported FTR for many years. Along with Seat Concepts providing the seats which was started by a FTR rider back in the day, these companies continue to support and give back to the sport. While writing about all of this, it just shows how deep the roots run and how many people that started in FTR are still involved in dirt bikes in some way. So to say I’m proud to know these folks and to know they all came from FTR in some way is an understatement! Enjoy the family atmosphere, the racing and watch your children grow up in FTR and be proud of what we have. Thanks for listening, Randy

CHECK THIS OUT

Maybe I'm late to the game and have never seen this before but this is the coolest gadget (pun intended) I've laid my eyes on in a hot minute. I stood in front of one at my local big box hardware store and couldn't believe this misting fan isn't widely used all over the pits at every FTR event. It really works! Do yourself a favor and try one out because, in case you didn't know, it's always hot out there when you're sitting in a cow pasture in Florida.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Improve your motocross and minimize injuries with 3 of the best motocross stretches. Muscles used in Motocross

According to most riders on the motocross circuit, the following muscle groups are the most important to concentrate on: •The Core Muscles: the rectus abdominus, the obliques, hip flexors and spinal erectors are responsible for maintaining a good riding posture and preventing lower back injury. They act as a base of support for the rest of the body while riding. •The Muscles of the Arms and Shoulders: the deltoids, biceps and triceps, as well as those in the forearm, wrist and hand are important for maintaining control of the bike during stunts and over rough terrain, as well as while performing emergency manoeuvres during competitions.

Most Common Motocross Injuries

Motocross is arguably one of the most dangerous sports ever: high speeds, rough terrain and the uncertainty of what the other riders may be doing. The more common injuries in this sport are thankfully minor. Motocross riders think nothing of cuts, scrapes and bruises or ankle or wrist sprains; however, there are potentially serious injuries to be aware of and some the most common include: •Concussion; •Spinal cord injuries; •Broken or sprained wrist; •Rotator cuff tear; •Shoulder dislocation and subluxation; •Broken clavicle (collarbone), usually the result of landing on the shoulder; •Knee injuries, including Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) sprain and Meniscus tear; and •Broken or sprained ankle.

Injury Prevention Strategies

First and foremost, donning the safety gear (including proper clothing, helmet, goggles, boots and protective padding) is the most important step a rider should take to keep severe injuries at bay. Other injury prevention strategies include: •Perform a thorough warm up routine before riding. Warm ups “awaken” the muscles preparing them for the oncoming stress of excessive and rigorous muscle movements. It is very important to include dynamic stretches in your warm up routine. Stretching out the muscles of the back, shoulders, wrists and knees prior to competing is crucial to prevention of sprains and strains. •Allow time for an adequate cool-down period and perform after training/competition stretching. •Utilize proper strength training during the off-season, especially strengthening those muscles that take the most punishment during a race. •Cardiovascular training is important to prevent muscles fatigue and allowing breakdown of proper form. •Practice balance, agility and proprioception drills to improve knee and ankle stability. •Increasing flexibility in the muscles and joints will reduce the stress on these areas during motocross riding. •Pushing the body beyond its limit for too long will only lead to

10 www.floridatrailriders.org

more and more injuries. Incorporate regular recovery, rest and relaxation periods into your training and competition. •Learn to fall properly; the majority of injuries that occur in motocross happen when the rider falls off the bike. Tumbling and gymnastics classes will teach you how to be more flexible and relaxed while falling.

The 3 Best Motocross Stretches

Motocross stretches are one of the most under-utilized techniques for improving athletic performance, preventing sports injury and properly rehabilitating sprain and strain injury. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that something as simple as stretching won’t be effective. Below are 3 of the best stretches for motocross; obviously there are a lot more, but these are a great place to start. Please make special note of the instructions with each stretch, and if you currently have any chronic or recurring muscle or joint pain please take extra care when performing the stretches below, or consult with your physician or physical therapist before performing any of the following stretches. Instructions: Slowly move into the stretch position until you feel a tension of about 7 out of 10. If you feel pain or discomfort you’ve pushed the stretch too far; back out of the stretch immediately. Hold the stretch position for 20 to 30 seconds while relaxing and breathing deeply. Come out of the stretch carefully and perform the stretch on the opposite side if necessary. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Rotating Wrist and Forearm Stretch: Place one arm straight out in front and parallel to the ground. Rotate your wrist down and outwards and then use your other hand to further rotate your hand upwards.

Assisted Reverse Chest and Shoulder Stretch: Stand upright with your back towards a table or bench and place your hands on the edge. Bend your arms and slowly lower your entire body.

Lying Knee Roll-over Lower Back Stretch: While lying on your back, bend your knees and let them fall to one side. Keep your arms out to the side and let your back and hips rotate with your knees. About the Author: Brad Walker is often referred to as the "Stretch Coach" and has even been called the Stretching Guru. www.stretchcoach.com

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS MAINTENANCE 101: DON'T FORGET YOUR TRAILERS!

TECH

I

wanted to share this with the membership for those that have pull trailers, campers and toy haulers. Every summer I make time to do a check on the main components of my camper as these things take some abuse during our race season. Taking care of these things now, while their sitting is the time as you don’t want to be on the side of the road going to or worst yet, going home on a Sunday night with a break down. Brakes, Bearings, Wheel seals, Tires are the most common items to keep on top of with a yearly teardown to inspect, replace or service these vital parts that keep our overloaded rigs rolling, yes overloaded! We all do it and I am the worst at it with my loaded rig with truck weighing in right at 25,000lbs , so brakes, bearings and tires are top priority. I pull my stuff down every summer, inspect and repack bearings, inspect brakes/tires. Now I have added the leaf springs and shackles. Case in point I started hearing a squeaking sound at the last race while driving across the pasture and made a note of it to check farther into the moving parts around the axles. Well well; as I inspected the moving parts everything was worn out from the spring equalizers, shackles to the bushings. Most of our campers come with the minimal requirements which include standard suspension components so keeping an eye on this stuff is pretty important. All my pivot points had nylon bushings which were toast along with the shackle plates with no

12 www.floridatrailriders.org

grease fittings on the bolts, surprise! With two floor jacks and a bottle jack, I replaced everything with a heavy duty kit that included thicker shackle plates, brass bushings and the shackle bolts had grease fittings along with the spring equalizers that also had brass bushings. This was my experience and I’m sure if you got a rig with leaf springs, you got nylon bushings at all pivot points. Check these things out and keep on top of these items as this could absolutely ruin your weekend. One more tidbit, replace the shackle kit with one with brass bushings and zerk fittings and turn the grease fittings/ bolts to the inside as you can grease them easily then, put the fitting to the outside you have to remove the tires to grease because you can’t get to them. Jack up the trailer by the frame; take the wheels off as you can now pry on the linkage or on the axles and check for any up and down movement. This is what I learned almost the hard way as I caught it in time, I hope it can help you also. Safe travels Randy Faul

Around The Pits THROWBACK CHALLENGE

Who's this guy? Can you guess who this Florida Trail Riders Legend is? Hint: He cared about the youth in the sport back in 1979 as much as he does today.

FTR Magazine sends condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Gustavo Barreiro.

FTR lost a good friend. Though most of you never knew him or heard of him, Gustavo Barreiro was a State Representative back in 2002, and was the House bill sponsor of the “T Mark Schmidt Off-Highway Vehicle Safety and Recreation Act, which became law in July of that year. He passed away yesterday of a heart attack. He was my friend, and was an avid Cyclist. RIP, Gus Barreiro. -Winn Peeples

We want to hear from you . send your letters and race reports to ftrmagazine@dekmar3d.com Its a great way to share your excitement and appreciation for the sport you love.

Can you believe FTR membership used to be $2.00 per year? This is really cool to see the history of the Florida Trail Riders. If you have great stories and articles from the good ol' days send them and share them. Also keep an eye out for the true history of FTR coming soon in the FTR Magazine.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS N 2019-20 FTR Enduro Season O I T TEN

AT

The new season is rapidly approaching and the Enduro Series has made several changes within the series to help bring new racers to the events and to make the events fun for everyone. The Sprint Enduro Format will be added to the Enduro series to add some variety to our off road racing. This will be very similar to the AMA Sprint Series rules but with modifications to make it FTR friendly. Clubs can use smaller tracts of land, run test sections multiple times, and use total time scoring. The test sections also have limited maximum distance and reset or ‘rest’ time between test. This also simplifies Enduro set up for clubs and makes it easier to provide the Enduro experience for racers. Another change is the addition of the Schoolboy Class. Riders 12-16yrs old can compete on 250 or smaller machines in this class. Class divisions may be added as this class grows in size and gets established. Our minimum race length has been shorted to 50 total miles from 60 miles to help clubs that are dealing with land issues host FTR races. Sprint Enduro format races will have 40 race or test miles as the minimum limit. C- Rider cut off and the realignment of the Class of 66 to 65 are two other changes. The C-Rider cut off will help take some of the stress off our introductory riders and will assist in having them complete the entire race. Realignment of the Class of 66 to 65 helps align this class with the National and other series within our region. Last but not least, we have two committee members (Don Chriss & Jimmy Pitts) who have volunteered to help clubs prior to race weekend check and double check the course layout and time schedules to make sure they are obtainable by riders of all skill level. This will help add some consistency to race day and also aid in making sure all skill levels enjoy the event. The Enduro Committee has worked hard on changes that will make our events more enjoyable by all riders but still maintain the true Enduro challenge and test rider skill. I hope you are able to try an event this season and if you have any questions about the series, you can reach out to any of the rider reps or myself. Thanks and hope to see you at the Races!
