FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS A

s our season has wrapped up, it’s time to reflect back on what a great season we have had and look forward to our annual banquet coming up in August. We have had so many stellar events this year it’s hard to pick a favorite, all I know is it’s going to be hard to top this past season. Our rider turn out has been on the upswing at every event with even the last events of the season having a great turn out. Our membership is growing at every event as more and more riders are finding out about FTR and its huge family. As we near the 2019-20 season keep in mind that the introduction of the AMA minor release can make it so much faster and easier just by filling out the form and sending it in to the AMA you will receive a card that shows you have a minor release on file. Parents, please consider taking advantage of this program to make your sign up experience a pleasant one. Speaking of AMA, starting this coming season FTR will be recognized by the AMA as an AMA Florida Off Road State Championship series. Our class champions will not only be awarded an FTR class champion award, but now will receive an AMA number one plate award! We will be included in the AMA magazine ‘upcoming events” section for the entire season. FTR will also be in the monthly e-mail that includes National, Regional, Featured and State championship events. We will also be included on their website as a State Championship series. Lots of advertisement for FTR and our clubs as their info will be available to more riders other than Fl. With this being said, it is very important that our clubs have an up to date contact person, phone number and or email address available for information needed. Contact the business office now and get that established as we have to have our schedule and contact info turned in to the AMA 90 days before our first

event, which is right now as you read this. Clubs don’t be left out not having a contact name for your event! In closing, I had a chance to ride the CFTR Straight Arrow enduro last month with a bunch of my buddies and what a great time we had. Right off the bat the two Randys turned it into a race as we took turns leading a section with lots of grins and a few oops. I had one major moment as I took my eyes off the course for a second to look at a rider just off the trail and just as soon as I did that, there was a fallen tree/log across the jeep road. We’re talking just clicked up to forth and things were starting to happen. I almost didn’t get the front end up in time and of course I acted like nothing happened but I’m sure it wasn’t pretty, but I saved it and that’s all that counts. The course was pretty challenging with the tight turns filled with mowed palmetto roots with some short straights to get your speed up. It had some really nice scrambles type trail that just was begging to be ridden fast. A lot of work went into cutting this trail and the club did a great job. I will have to mention I was really glad I had a Seat Concerts seat and some TFracing suspension as the roots could have been brutal, just sayin. All in all a great event with lots of first timers coming out, hope you enjoyed it and come ride some more of these events. Stay in shape this summer, ride often and get ready for the 19/20 season as it’s just around the corner. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

ARMBANDS MUST BE WORN BY ALL PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS AT ALL TIMES.

I

hope everyone is getting the much needed “R and R” (rest and relaxation) during the summer break. Already some are anticipating the next season. The feeling of competition and the rush of winning is a strong motivator. For many it is the essence of why we ride.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have that feeling every day? You can if you’re running the race lead by Jesus. How would you feeling knowing that your Savior worked through you to present His message of eternal life to a lost friend or family member? Hebrews 12:1-3 says it this way, “… all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by

item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” So while we enjoy our vacations, our travels, our rides through the woods or the back roads, remember He is right there with us, guiding, directing, encouraging us in the only race that really matters. The most wonderful part of that is He will do this not just over the summer but now and forevermore. Accept Him today and start running the right race, the race of spreading a message of hope. It is like no other race you’ve ever competed in, guaranteed!! He is patiently waiting to become part of your life and is just a prayer away. Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA Starting Line to Checkered Flag… “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS SEAT TIME AND MORE SEAT TIME! by Randy Faul and Jimmy Moore

I

don’t know how many of you know this kid, but this little ripper is making a name for himself in the world of off-road racing. Coming off a Peewee A championship right into the 65A class with another championship and now finishing second in the Mini A class, Jimmy Moore is looking to bring the number 1 plate home this coming season. From racing all of FTR and several GNCC’s to now trying some Enduros, this kid is the real deal. How many 12 year olds can say they rode a 70 plus mile enduro and finished in 2nd place in B 200 on a KTM 85? From the thoughts and words of Jimmy, this story is kind of a “In my own words” explanation of how his weekend went. First he would like to thank the Berards for enticing him to compete and second to the Enduro 101 class that was presented Saturday evening, it was very helpful for his 70 plus mile journey. Seat time and more Seat time was the order of the day with the first section being pretty gnarly with some of the logs as big as his wheels! I got hung up a few times but kept charging as he tried to stay smooth and conserve energy with a light riding style while always driving forward. Test 2 was also challenging but not as bad as test 1 as neither of these sections prepared me for test 3. Gassed up every chance I got along with water, fruit roll ups, cliff bars as the breaks was short and sweet. Test 3 came up and I just hit it! Talk about gnarly! Single track, tight, mud, the matrix log section, more logs and by far the most difficult single track I have ridden, wasn’t my favorite section but I conquered it. My favorite part would be gator slough… the scenery was great. I would like to say “Thanks” to all the support I felt from everyone and especially my parents. The club did a great job and helped at all the stops whether with gas, food or encouragement. I definitely would like

to do more Enduros in the coming season. Next year my goal is to win Mini A , ride as many GNCC’s and Enduro’s as possible and maybe win that Eric Berard HiPoint trophy because that was awesome. On a side note, this young man has the desire and is hungry for the challenge that presents themselves as he has dedicated the coming years to excel in his racing opportunities. Hope you enjoyed this little guy’s experience of racing with the big boys as much as I have and wishing him the best of luck in the coming years.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Top Three Dangers of An Injury and How to Avoid Them – Part 3: Nutrition By Coach Robb Beams

O

ne of the most constant messages that I share with my clients daily is the importance of consistency. I encourage my clients to be better by 1% every day at something: sleep, food, hydration, flexibility, mental skills, warm up, cool-down, etc.

When it comes to developing sport-specific and cross training protocols, I always err on the side of caution because the ONLY two things that are guaranteed to slow down or even halt progression is an illness or an injury. Avoiding an illness can be done by combining three things: 1) evaluating the body’s response to training volume and intensity, 2) eating enough quality and quantity of food to support the immune system, and finally, 3) allowing the body to rest long enough and deep enough to absorb the stress of life and rejuvenate itself nightly. Unfortunately, avoiding an injury isn’t always as easy as it seems. As the old saying goes within the athletic world, “It isn’t IF you are going to get injured, but WHEN”. Once injured, how to deal with it is often as convoluted as nutrition - Do I apply ice or heat? Should I cast or not cast?, Should I exercise or rest?... just to mention a few. Before we can answer these specific types of questions, we must determine the type of injury – whether it is tissue related or bone. The Body is the Sum Total of Bones and Soft Tissue Think of the body’s musculoskeletal system and a combination of soft tissue and bones. In addition to holding up the overall weight of the body (lean muscle mass and adipose/fat tissue), bones stabilize and work with muscles to create movement and maintain body posturing. Visualize the muscles “pulling” against the attachment to the bone to create movement. Without muscles, bones don’t move. Without bones, muscles can’t pull. Soft Tissue Soft tissue has three major functions – to connect, support and to protect the organs of the body. There are also two types of soft tissue. The connective tissue includes tendons which connect muscles to bones; ligaments that connect bones to bones; fascia, skin, fibrous tissue, fat, and synovial membranes which serve as lubricants for the joints. The non-connective tissue are the muscles, nerves and blood. Bone There are 206 bones in the body that work collectively to support five major functions: 1. Support: the framework for muscles, soft tissue and organs to attach. 2. Movement: visualize bones as leverage points to generate movement. 3. Protection: the skull protects the brain; the spine protects the nerves in the spinal column; and the ribs protect the lungs, heart and liver. 4. Production of red blood cells: the center of the bone cavity is referred to as “red marrow” which is the source of production for red and white cells. 5. Storage of minerals and lipids (fats): bones retain 99% of the calcium found in the body. Calcium salts help maintain calcium and phosphate ions in body fluids. The body stores lipids for energy reserves in the yellow marrow. Two Types of Injuries There are two types of injuries – acute and chronic. An acute, or impact

12 www.floridatrailriders.org

injury typically occurs from an accident such as a head injury (concussion), broken bone, sprains, dislocations, Achilles tendon rupture, and rotator cuff tears of the shoulder. This type of injury requires immediate medical attention. A chronic injury, on the other hand, develops slowly and is persistent and long lasting. The pain is enough to capture your attention, but not so bad that it keeps you from continuing activity. A chronic injury is usually addressed with the RICE acronym – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Nutrition Strategies to Heal as Quickly as possible Most people don’t realize it, but nutrition plays a vital role in the healing process. Key nutritional strategies when recovering from an injury include: 1. Refrain from cutting back on calories. This is counter-productive to recovery as it actually will slow down the healing process. Fruits, vegetables, and lean protein are low on the calorie scale, but big on the nutritional density scale. 2. Eat fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps make collagen, an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory that will facilitate the recovery process from the inside out. Sources: citrus fruit, bell peppers, dark greens, kiwi broccoli, tomatoes, mango and papaya. 3. Consume protein-rich foods such as salmon, red meat, chicken, tofu, beans, peas, nuts and seeds. These types of food are high in amino acids which are the building block for new tissue and help prevent excessive inflammation. 4. Eat foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines, walnuts, flax seeds, and chia seeds. Not commonly known is that Omega-3 facilities new muscle generation reducing muscle loss during immobilization, as well as preventing excessive inflammation. 5. Avoid Omega-6 fats which can increase inflammation within the body. These are found in corn, canola, cottonseed, soy, and sunflower oils. 6. Add zinc to your diet. Zinc is a commonly deficient nutrient in the body but an instrumental component of many enzymes and proteins needed for tissue repair and growth. Sources: salmon, sardines, shellfish, seeds, nuts and whole grains. 7. Eat more calcium-rich foods such as organic dairy, dark greens, sardines, broccoli, almonds, and seaweed. Calcium is a vital component to strong bones and teeth, along with aiding muscle contractions and nerve signaling. 8. Be sure to get enough Vitamin D – whether naturally through exposure to sunlight or through your foods. Vitamin D facilitates the absorption of Calcium which speeds up bone rejuvenation, along with strengthening bones and teeth. It can also help shorten the recovery time after surgery. Outside Sources include egg yolk, whole eggs, organic milk, salmon, sardines, tuna, shrimp, oysters, and liver. 9. Consume foods such as free range meat, chicken and fish that are high in creatine. Creatine is known to reduce muscle mass loss, facilitate the development of muscle mass, and reestablish muscle strength. 10. Eat more shellfish as they naturally contain Glucosamine, a vitamin known to facilitate the creation of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and speed up bone rejuvenation. Glucosamine also reduces pain associated with joint and bone injuries.

Broken Bone Specific Nutrition for Healing In addition to Calcium and Vitamin D mentioned above, the following nutrients will facilitate the recovery process associated with a broken bone: 1. Arginine - This amino acid is needed to produce a fracture healing compound known as nitric oxide. Sources: free range meat, organic dairy, seafood, raw nuts and oatmeal.

fat/protein item. 4. Consume your food without the distraction of a phone, TV or computer to maximize the absorption of micro and macro nutrients. Literally get more out of your food! 5. Eat out no more than one time a week to avoid foods loaded in preservatives and sugars.

2. Inositol - Like Vitamin D, Inositol helps improve the absorption of calcium to strengthen bones and teeth. Sources: cantaloupe, grapefruit, organs and prune.

Take away message… When you become injured (at any level), you are always in a race against space and time. Understanding how to offset the inflammatory process, without slowing down the healing process, giving the body the invaluable vitamins, minerals and necessary macro nutrients to heal, repair, and grow can be directly influenced by what, when, and how much you consume and supplement. The greater the attention to detail, the quicker the recovery!

3. Boron - This powerhouse helps increase both calcium and magnesium retention while increasing the effectiveness of Vitamin D. Source: raisins, prunes, Brazilian nuts, apples, bananas, celery, broccoli, chickpeas 4. Magnesium - Facilitates bone strength and firmness. Sources: almonds, cashews, potato skins, brown rice, kidney and black-eyed peas and organic milk. 5. Silicon - Critical element in the early stages of bone formation. Sources: whole grains, carrots, green beans, red wine, beer, brown rice, barley, oats, raw nuts, seafood and organ meats. 6. Vitamin K1 and K2 - Improves bone strength. Sources: kale, spinach, broccoli, egg yolk, organic dairy, organ meats, prunes, kiwis, avocado, blackberry, blueberry, grapes, hard cheese, dark chicken meat, real butter. Top Five Nutrition Habits 1. Consume half of your body weight in ounces of water (150 pounds /2 = 75 ounces) over 8-10-hour day. 2. Eat every two hours to stabilize blood sugar levels – maintain mental clarity and consistent energy levels. 3. Every time you eat, consume a fruit, a vegetable and a high-quality

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

I

f you were in FTR 5 or more years ago, then you know Kirt Lynch. He used to be a regular vendor at FTR events (Atlantic MotorSports). His son, Palmer, is a AA rider. I became good friends from hanging out with Kirt, and I have kept in touch with him since he retired from FTR. Even though we are good friends, I never knew until recently that he is actually a Space Alien! The man is a pure twisted artistic supergenius! Over the last few years he has been slowly converting his bike shop (on Mayport Road, about 4 blocks north of Atlantic Blvd in Jax Beach), into a café/bar/restaurant. Not sure how to describe the place avant-garde, eclectic, steam-punk, or just a museum of the downright bizarre! He is the Willy Wonka of the motorcycle repair world. His endeavor is called A1A Racer Café (formerly A1A Bilker Café). Name was changed to protect the innocent. First thing you notice is the fullsize welding gas cylinders serving as parking barriers or, maybe the dirt-bike frame mailbox. Inside, the ceiling and walls of the multi-story warehouse are lined with a patch-work of every piece of scrounged-up sheet metal for miles (I suspect he used metals to shield-out the spy rays the government uses and I don't mean any government from earth). Shelves of classic (real full-size) motorbikes line the walls in one room. Currently, the place is about 20% café, 15% bar, 39% museum, 40% functioning cycle repair and parts shop, and 39% metal fabrication shop all seamlessly integrated and intertwined to 176% awesome. He has a way to go before the café is open for business (2 years at least), but you can tell already that it will be a

14 www.floridatrailriders.org

famous landmark someday. Apparently, he will start with a food truck out back while the kitchen gets finished. Pistons for beer taps? Bike shocks and brake rotors for bar stools? One bar is actual bikes that patrons will sit on. The walls are lined with odd bits of memorabilia. The café tables in the upstairs part are built of old FTR trophies that Kirt and Palmer won over many years of racing. So, if you happen to be in the area, stop in and see him. You won't regret it.

The 2018-2019 Florida Trail Riders Enduro series concluded the season in Richloam with Ron Commo winning High Point but when it was all said and done Scott Gawler Jr took home the crown. Scoptt finished the series with 505 points and 4 wins in front of 2nd place Alex Lugar and 3rd place Lee Daley. Some say the turnout at this years events saw a decline but you can not argue the racing was better then ever. Getting good photos of enduro races is a challenge in itself. Due to the nature of the events, photographers don't have the luxury of moving around much and waiting for the riders to come around on multiple laps to get another shot. I'd like to thank Coy Hopson for contacting me and sharingsharing his great pics. Here's to another great year of FTR Enduro racing.
