FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS THE PREZ

SAYS

A

pril has arrived and along with it comes a very busy schedule on our way to winding down our series. So far it’s looking like all of our events will take place as the rains have subsided and things are drying up. I have spoken to several of our clubs that have had to reschedule and they are looking forward to having their events get underway. I know for my club, the Sarasota Area Dirt Riders, we have been on our property getting the final touches done as we only have about two free weekends left to finish. Even though we had to build a bridge just in case the creek doesn’t go down for safe crossing, we will be prepared. Without revealing too much, we will have two separate courses with only the start and about a half mile being used for both days. Yes this means 99 percent of the Sunday course will be untouched from the Saturday riders and will have some very nice flowing single track to bring a smile to your faces. After several attempts to make this event happen, it looks like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. As with any club, this takes an extreme amount of manpower, planning and revenue. Along with these few things to have a successful event, we also need to be looking at ways to bring in our youth into the workings of our clubs. I have spoken on this several times and we have to find a solution so our children and our grandchildren will be able to enjoy our sport for years to come. In a society where it’s difficult to keep our family members on the same page, heading in the same direction and being productive citizens, it’s a huge task to be active in any sport or hobby. As parents, if you see an interest or some excitement or a gleam in your children’s eye when you talk about the next race coming up, take it a

step further and ask them if they would like to go see how they build a course or maybe go help cut some trail. I’m sure any club would welcome some new faces and some extra help on the work weekends. So I ask all of you, what are YOU doing to help preserve and prolong our sport for generations to come? If anyone wants to come out and experience the “before the race” event, please call the promoting club or call me and I will make it happen. No obligations or expectations just come out with your family and see what all the excitement is about. Not only will you spend some quality time with your children, you can see firsthand what goes into designing and arrowing courses and cutting trail; and you might even have a chance to build a bridge! You will also be able to relate as to why certain things are done the way they are and get the satisfaction of knowing that you cut this certain section of trail and be able to listen to the excitement from the riders about how awesome this course was. Our youth is the most important part of our lives, whether it is family, school, church or sports, we must give direction; teach responsibility and respect to ensure they have a fighting chance in anything they decide to do. The best way to do this is being with them, bring them to the woods and spend some quality time with them. Make the time to make a difference. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

CHAPLAIN’S

ear FTR Family, It was great to be back on a bike this past weekend.(Dade City) Nature Coast Trial Blazers did a wonderful job. It was truly a weekend with unexpected expectations. What do I mean? When we arrived Friday night, it was a beautiful evening. When we awoke the next morning, it was cool and raining. Where did the rain come from? It was not supposed to arrive until later; a day later! Needless to say, it caught us off guard. We did not come prepared for rain. I still have the same old rubber boots with a hole in them. Regardless, of the weather, it turned out beautiful for the Saturday afternoon races. How about Sunday? The course was amazing. We had a blast. Great job Nature Coast! However, the weekend was not without peril. Unfortunately, in the second Sunday race, Andy Wallace (A 200) hit a tree and received a serious blow to the head. That injury warranted a ride in the helicopter. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the club course workers and our Safety Team, Andy is currently recovering at the hospital and is doing extremely well. His family has asked that you please continue to pray for his speedy recovery. By the time you read this article, it is our prayer that he will be home enjoying some recovery time. When this goes to print Easter would have just past. I hope you were able to attend worship somewhere. Like many of the holidays we celebrate in America, they have been over commercialized. You will not find a bigger advocate for capitalism than me. However, the celebration of a giant

bunny that delivers colored eggs is pretty far from Easter’s original story. What is Easter? It is the celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why celebrate such an event? We celebrate His victory over death; not physical death but a spiritual death. Everything I believe; I live for; and am willing to die for is capsulated in this one weekend celebration. My faith is built on His sacrifice (you can read about it in John 18, 19, and 20). And, the same faith I have (and I am not alone) is available for you, but you must ask and seek it. If you are interested or have questions, look me up at the race or give me a call (904-673-9034); I’m available to talk and listen. Meanwhile continue to pray for Mr. Wallace. I look forward to seeing you on the line! Your friend, Andy Dickson FTR Chaplain

A QUICK NOTE FROM OUR TECH INSPECTORS

S

ome numbers and letters are looking ragged and or are missing on a few bikes and quads. We are nine races into the season, please try to check your numbers and fix them before Gatorback. Also, we have seen a few screens burnt out on some four strokes. This is another maintenance item; check the screens to ensure they are intact. Two stroke screens plug with oil and carbon residue due to the oil mix. These need to be removed and cleaned regularly. I found a torch will burn off the residue and then a quick wire brush and you are done, solvents did not touch the stuff. I also want to thank everyone as I believe the Tech process is flowing quite well now. The transponder check is working with very few no reads. Remember, if you show up late, after tech is closed, ask scoring or the club to call us on the FTR radio, we monitor it and will arrange to tech your bike prior to your race. We have been asked not to tech bikes on the starting line. You must find us prior to your race and we will help you... I promise. Thanks for your cooperation. Pete Rose

ark your calendar, it’s almost that time of the year already. The 2015-2016 Florida Trail Riders Awards Expo will be held on July 30, 2016 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. It was the best awards event last year and this year looks to be even better. Also don’t forget start thinking about your nominations for the 2016 Pit Mom and Sportsman of the year. Keep an eye on the FTR home page for more information as it’s updated.

For those MX racers out there missing the FTR series here the I4 MX season is underway.

Round 4- April 10 @Tampa MX Round 5- May 1 @Florida Tracks and Trails Round 6- May 15 @Tampa MX Round 7- May 22 @Mesa Park MX Round 8- June 5 @Florida Cycle Park Round 9- June 12 @Hardrock MX Round 10- June 26 @Tampa MX

April 16-17: The Big Buck course presents the standard GNCC obstacles, everything from tight woods, to fields, creek crossings, rocks and hill climbs. It’s a fast, wide-open course, but it’s definitely not easy! The field sections are very fast and they get chopped up and rough as the weekend goes on, so you need to have your suspension sorted for that.

April 30-May 1: Another new addition for 2016 will be the Moree’s Sportsman Preserve in Society Hill, South Carolina. While this venue may be new to the world of GNCC Racing, it’s definitely no stranger to the racing world. The soil here is a bit on the sandy side, so the addition of a second sand race to the schedule will make for another added challenge this year.

GET TO KNOW YOUR TREASURER: KEVIN VAUGHN Position: Treasurer How long have you had it? I just got re-elected to a second term. This is my third year in this position. Experience you bring with you? I maintain my own business books and taxes, and my personal finances. Favorite part of what you do? I enjoy working with, and getting input from FTR members who are “seasoned and have been around much longer than myself. I also appreciate the input from all members. How long have you been in FTR and what got you started? I have been a member of FTR for 10 years. A good friend (Scott B) asked me to come watch him ride many years ago. After watching him, I entered the next race and never looked back. What does FTR need to know about your position and what do you need from them? The position of Treasurer in FTR is more of an oversight position. Our Business Manager mostly handles FTR finances, although the Treasurer should be eager to watch our finances and question expenses that may not seem proper. What club are you in? I have not been active enough over the last 6 months, but I would consider Sarasota Area Dirt Riders, and Old School Dirt Riders to be my home clubs. Family involvement? I am the only member of my family who participates in FTR. My son tried a couple times. Something that would blow others minds? I bet many members of FTR would respond the same, but this organization changed my life. The desire to become a better rider has pushed me to make many lifestyle changes that are good beyond racing. Like many other riders, we live for FTR weekends and the friends that I have made.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS CATCHING UP WITH: DALTON ELLIS What do you do when your not racing FTR? Quad Open C racer, Dalton Ellis, has been spending his time away from the hare scramble life organizing a brand new event at Desoto Speedway in Manatee County. FTR Magazine got a minute to ask Dalton a few questions about this new form of quad racing. Where are you from? I’m from Myakka City, Fl How old are you? I’m 19 years old What class are you in, in FTR? I race Quad C Open How did you come up with the idea of the race at Desoto Speedway? I work at the speedway and on the nights with the Crash N Bash races, we need time to let the drivers change tires and get a drink before their next race since most drivers race every race. On a Crash N Bash night it takes us 5-10 minutes before we can begin the next race, so we added quads to pass the time and it did not disappoint. How long did it take to put together? I had only a few days notice to put together a track and find riders to race. I did some test laps on the 1/5th mile asphalt oval but it was too fast and too slick to put quads on. Somebody would have gotten hurt. My intentions were to have a good race and everybody walk away and laugh about it like FTR races. What was key to making it happen? The key to having it as successful as it was would have to have been finding the riders I did. Without them showing up it would not have been as good as it was. It was such short notice that a few did not have enough time to get their quads together and some already had prior commitments with it being Easter weekend. Do you have connections at Desoto speedway? I work there on Saturday nights. I sometimes leave the FTR races after the quad race to work if they are close local races. How many people raced? We had 7 riders show up and 6 were FTR and the last guy is possibly going to race FTR. We had two B open riders, four C open riders and the one non-FTR rider. What part of the track did you use? I set up two tires on opposite ends of the dirt in the infield to make a circle track. Was it before after or in between the car races? Both races were during. The first quad race was the second race of the night and the second was after the children’s Easter egg hunt. Did people stick around and cheer you all on? The fans enjoyed it. They cheered as we were getting ready to take the

green and they did the count down. How many laps? First race was a heat race and it was 10 laps. Felt like 2 minutes and we were finished with the race as quick as we came out on the track. Second race was 20 laps and was full of bumping and passing. The ruts got deep on the inside line but nobody was giving up the inside. Any rules? The rules were you had to have a helmet, goggles, long pants, and boots. If you had other gear, common sense was to wear it. I had my Leatt chest protector and my kill switch tether on. Highlights of the night? The best part of the night had to have been our 20 lap race. 7 riders into the first turn all at once like a Hare Scramble. Aaron Swenson and myself were side by side and banged bars a few times. The last 3-4 laps I was all over Vitor Vasconcelos. I was bumping him in the turns and able to get beside him until he took the line away each time going into the turns. He ended up with the win. Were there trophies? Yes, top 3 got trophies and paid for place. There was no entry fee for this race and no parking fee. Do you have a list the winning order? 1st place went to Vitor Vasconcelos (556B) second was me, Dalton Ellis (871C) and third was Tyson Marx (72C) When is the next one? I’m working on a date for May, 28th. I’m trying to make it correspond with FTR to try and gather more riders to make this event grow into something more common. How will people know when the next one is? I will put a post on the Florida Trail Riders Facebook group, my Facebook page, and the Desoto Speedway Facebook page will promote it. The next race will be even better than last night. I’ll be adding a lot more to it instead of the small tight oval we had. I’ll add some log obstacles to add an enduro cross type environment. Everyone is welcome on all quads. Hopefully next time we can add a higher payout with a reasonable entry fee.

JUST ANNOUNCED ! DESOTO SPEEDWAY IS PAYING OUT CASH FOR THE MAY 28th QUAD RACE. $100 FOR FIRST PLACE, $75 FOR SECOND PLACE, AND $50 EACH FOR THIRD, FOURTH, AND FIFTH PLACES. COME ON OUT AND SHOW SOME FTR SUPPORT.

ASTRONAUT TRAIL HARE SCRAMBLE After a fast paced round of race cancellations, postponements, and reschedules, the FTR Hare Scramble series resumed, after a month of no racing, with a one day event. The Apollo Motorcycle Club hosted the Astronaut Hare Scramble 5.5, as it’s become to be known. This was a Sunday only race that saw a lot of anxious racers come to the line and put on a great show and, thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated this time. Thanks to Kim Mousette for getting some great pic’s of the action.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS TF RACING TECH TIP Rekluse Clutch Talk with Tom Fleming

I

have selected to share my personal view of the Rekluse Auto Clutch. We have been asked repeated questions regarding the performance of the Rekluse; why do we use it? This whole topic is a mine field of course. We can most likely say 80% of the riders using the Rekluse like it, 15% think it’s OK and the other 5% always have issues with Tom Fleming the clutch. There will always be riders that are opinionated and will tell you it’s of no value and that’s fine, but you should not stop there, ask more questions. You just might be passing up an opportunity to improve your lap times. The Rekluse Auto Clutch allows for the rider to start and even stop the motorcycle without touching the clutch lever. But, what about starting in gear at the start of the race, what about working through a very tight section and having to jam on the brakes extremely hard without shutting off the engine? You could be in a hard fought battle racing for position and working hard to pass an opponent to have your engine shut off at which time you just gave up the position and wasted much needed body energy. Rekluse improves traction, PREVENTS stalling, allows for better starts, aids with better cornering, and the peace of mind that boosts rider CONFIDENCE that the engine will not stall. We, at TF Racing, actually have a extremely high regard for the Rekluse. Rekluse was and still is founded on very high values of performance, quality and their innovation just will not stop. Frankly, I am not sure how Rekluse does it when other manufacturer’s rely on a complacent product line. We were at a very important race just recently, a rider was over heard talking to another rider’s mechanic... “My Rekluse is not working, it grabs, clatters and feels very notchy...” This was on the Eve of very important point paying championship even. A full blown “panic attack” was happening. If you have been racing for any time at all you know its a very sickening feeling. Rekluse recommends to use Rotella which carries the much needed JASO-MA rating that is needed for wet clutches. Most common mistake is to use slick oils, which can & will cause a squealing or chattering sound at low speeds as the clutch tries to lock down and will get louder as the engine temperature gets hotter. Oil changes are a must, follow your manufactures recommendations. Your engine requires clean dirt

free oil. As with some motorcycles, if the oil filter is old and dirty the engine will lose oil pressure. Guess what, low oil pressure with affect the clutch performance and the overall operation. A big overlooked and forgotten part of your Rekluse clutch (Your stocker too, for that matter) is keeping new and fresh .3 or .4 (Could be 5.1?) fluid, if you ride a motorcycle equipped with a hydraulic system. .3, .4 and 5.1 fluid look for moisture to soak up and does not function correctly when it ages. One more tip, do not over fill, you can help the clutch to partially slip simply by over filling the master cylinder reservoir. If you have a motorcycle with a clutch cable you are at risk as well. When was the last time you cleaned and lubricated your clutch cable? I bet never. Cables do wear, fill up with dirt and will become dry followed by stiction. Any and all cables are subject to being serviced and pay close attention to your clutch lever pivot points. The clutch assembly cannot be sloppy or full of sand or so worn out that the lever drags on the clutch perch. Be warned! Replacing your clutch assembly with the wrong unit will produce more troubles; always use the correct style. When the clutch lever assembly is wrong, worn out or the cable is bad or master cylinder is leaking internally, your Rekluse clutch “free gain” will never ever function the way it should... Therefore the clutch will not function as intended. As a tip, if and when you open new brake fluid and it is in a plastic container it will, over time, absorb moisture. That’s what it does. Next time you purchase brake fluid, try to find it in a metal can or purchase a small container of brake fluid so it will not sit around for a year. .3, .4 and 5.1 are Glycol based where .5 is Silicone based. They can not be mixed... Keep new controls and cables on your bike too. Your controls play a huge part in whether your clutch, throttle and brake operation will perform at the highest levels. Just because you have spent a large portion your racing budget on expensive technical products, does not mean that your issues with worn out controls will automatically fix themselves. You use those controls every time you ride, you get use to bad controls and tend to think they are OK. Look again. Controls are precious so treat them accordingly.

2016 Dade City Twister Hare Scramble

Finally ! After a solid month of rained out races FTR members were happy to be back to a full race weekend and even though El Nino and Mother Nature tried to put a dampener on it, it turned out to be a great event. The Nature Coast Trail Riders never fail to put on a great show and the Dade City property is always up to par. With the notable absence of Garrett Edmisten, the door was wide open for Dylan Rash to take home his first AA win aboard his Palmetto Motorsports KTm. Another first was had as Jesse Ansley pushed his RPM Racing KTM hard to not only take first in A200 but also the overall for the day.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS GOING RACIN’ WITH : ANTHONY LIVINGSTON

Mariah Lacy Photo

had a great time at the Apollo Astronaut Trail Hare Scrambles event on Sunday, March 13. It was great to be back racing FTR Hare Scrambles after a very long rain delay. Because I got hurt riding the day before Mondon Hill, I hadn’t raced an FTR Hare Scramble since December, 2015! During that time off, I was able to enjoy some additional time with Anthony Liningston my family and take care of some maintenance on the house, RV, and the bike. I also spent a lot of time in the gym doing some off-bike training and rehabbing some recurring injuries. In late January, I ran the Eagles Nest Enduro and won my class! Unfortunately, while I stayed committed in the gym, I couldn’t fulfill my plans to train hard on the bike between Eagles Nest and GNCC Round 1. In fact, I didn’t ride once. So, even though I showed up strong and healed, my lack of seat time showed at Round 1, where I finished dismally in 16th place in my class. A week later, my day at Samsula started like the GNCC. I struggled badly during practice. But before race time, I made a couple adjustments and found my pace. After getting a near last place start, I was in 1st after lap 1 and maintained the lead through most of the last lap. I loved the track—the flowing sand monster sections and the fields were a blast, and the course was a smooth highway compared to the GNCC at Rodman Ranch. Unfortunately, a mindless error sent me into a tree with just a couple miles left, costing me 3 positions and resulting in a 4th place finish for me. Overall, I’m happy with the way I rode, had a lot of fun, and am thrilled to be back to a full racing schedule. What a great weekend at the Dade City Twister Hare Scramble! NCTB outdid itself and, despite inclement weather on Saturday and delayed race starts, pulled off an outstanding event. The club’s long hours allowed my nephew to experience riding a dirt bike for the first time off Croom’s learning track (with about

1-2 hours of practice) and on a hare scramble course during the fun run. That memorable moment of him going through the chicane and the accomplished look on his face, after braving the mud, roots, and falls, were alone worth the trip. The next morning, the track was amazing! I got a bad start off the line, and then missed a double green avoiding a competitor going up the ravine jump. After falling a couple more times during the first half of lap because I was being impatient, I finally settled into a good pace and caught up to 2nd place. A few miles into lap 2 and I was in an intense three-way battle for second with Manuel Hernandez (on the 421) and Josh Drake (on the 44 Kawi)! Position changes seemed to happen at every turn and straightaway, and the pace was extremely fast for me. But my fitness was there and, at the end of 3 laps, I had secured the 2nd place spot. With one lap to go, I pushed as hard as I could while trying to ride smooth and consistent. Thankfully, I finished on top of the podium for the first time! I am truly grateful to the Clubs and FTR for putting on such great events, and for being blessed with the ability to enjoy this sport and all it has to offer. I’m genuinely proud to be part of such a great organization. I also just want to express my appreciation for those that support me and my riding endeavors, especially: my family (in particular, my mom, Uncle Ron, and my nephews); XTreme Powersports in Brandon, FL; the great people at TF Racing Suspension for their always outstanding service and inspiration to train harder and ride smarter; EVS Sports; Acerbis; and TwinAir.
