A
s we welcome the holiday season this year, a lot comes to mind when I think of how very lucky we all really are. Our family for one is the most important thing we all have in the short time we are all here. Along with our faith and friends, work comes in here somewhere but not necessarily in the top three for me. I also consider all of my fellow FTR members’ part of my family as I see everyone almost as much as I see my wife Teresa. I have been very fortunate to meet so many of the FTR membership, that it’s almost overwhelming all the new members and families that come out on race weekends to enjoy our sport and spend some quality time with their friends and families. With this being said, I have also witnessed the bumps and bruises that come along with enjoying our sport. As some of you have also witnessed and even been on the receiving end of a not so good encounter with gravity, I want to remind all of us how quickly things can turn into serious situations and how very lucky we are at our events
to have the best safety team available there for us. While I witnessed some very serious situations back a few races ago, it sent chills down my spine to see our medics working on someone while on the way to be transported. This sport has its risks and one thing that will really help in any of these situations is the ability for our medics to know who you are, what medical history you have, and a working phone number. Please consider signing up for the ability to have some of that information recorded on a transponder type disk that our medics can scan instantly and find out who we are along with contact information. I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and look forward to the New Year as we circle the wagons again very soon. Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS CHAPLAIN’S
CORNER
Dear FTR Family, ost of you are probably aware that we lost of one our own in November. Years ago, Greg Spehn and his two sons were active in FTR. Their club of choice was CFTR (the Central Florida Trail Riders). They competed in enduros and hare scrambles. They left FTR to pursue another passion, Jet Ski racing. After winning some Jet Ski championships they took a break from competition. Like so many families that come and go in FTR, his boys grew up and began to make a life for themselves. However, a few months ago Greg made a decision to come back to his original racing family. Unfortunately, before we even had a chance to rekindle or build that relationship with him, he left us. Please continue to remember to pray for his two sons and the loved ones he left behind. Greg, you will be missed.

It is amazing how quickly the months are flying past. The year is coming to an end. By the time you read this, the Christmas decorations will be up in all the stores and you will find my phone and computer tuned into the “Oldies Christmas Music” station on Pandora or Live 365. I love the classics at Christmas time (Bing, Elvis, etc.). At this time each year, I put the Christmas story in my magazine article. I do this with the hope that maybe someone will read it and remember that Christmas is more than just “gettin’ what you what” and “stuffin’ yourself with stuffing.” Life is brief, fragile, and meant it to be enjoyed. However, it is enjoyed best when it is done with Gods Son, Jesus. Here is a brief snippet of the story of His birth. It is found in the Bible, in the book of Luke, chapter 2. It goes like this: In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to
him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. I hope that maybe you will take a moment and read all of Luke 2. Is this where it begins? Not really. The story of His birth was foretold thousands of years before He was laid in the manger. I hope that you will give Him some time this Christmas. As King and Messiah, He is worthy of our very best. Spend some time thinking on these things this Season. Merry Christmas! Your friend, Andy Dickson FTR Chaplain Master A #121

Join the AMA in the fight against E15 “The ethanol lobby has finally decided they can’t beat us on the issue and has resorted to insulting motorcyclists’ intelligence,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Clearly, we are winning in the court of public opinion. y mechanic (Dad) and I made the 18 hour drive from central Florida to compete in the Ironman GNCC 90cc Youth ATV 8-12 class on Halloween weekend. Foul weather had us guessing right up until the flag dropped at 8:15 am. The skies held and Ironman Raceway did not disappoint. The soil was perfect. Dark brown clay corn fields made for screaming fast runs past teams of spectators and rocky creek bottoms which meander the surrounding property served up some nice elevation change and frigid Indiana water. No GNCC at Ironman Raceway would be complete without a tricky leg of their famed motocross track. The clay tacked up nicely and traction was good through out the race. I got a good single kick start and captured 3rd in the class of twelve in the holeshot. The class was comprised of the
GNCC regulars and a healthy dose of local XC series competitors from the many midwest XC racing series such as IXCR who cosanctioned this event. I mixed it up in the middle of the pack until a transmission failure cut my race short about 45 minutes in leaving me stranded in 10th place for the day. This was a great experience filled all that XC racing is about. Getting to race the Indiana terrain and getting to walk and talk along the Pro ATV row were my favorite parts of the weekend. Although I didn’t win I had a lot of fun. I went to race in a no points, no pressure, have fun environment and we did just that. Can’t wait to line up with this class again in March of 2016 at the season opener.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS RIDER SPOTLIGHT
AUSTIN BARTLETT & GUNNER WILLIAMS
T
he 2014-2015 Quad Pee Wee A Champ Austin Bartlett had a weekend of first at Sunrunner’s Salute to Veteran’s Hare Scramble. The eight year old jumped onto his KTM and had his first ever race on the big track in the competitive 65cc class. Austin had some time to give his thoughts on his big day. What was different between the classes for you? The track was a lot longer and more technical. Was there something about the big track you did not like? No I loved it all! What on the big track did you like the most? I liked being able to ride a lot longer. I also liked having more of a challenge with the technical stuff. What did you learn the most the first time on the big track? I learned to take my
time, be cautious and to not ride outside of my ability. Were you scared the first time on the big track? I was scared a little because I did not get to do the practice lap. Practice runs the same time I race in Quad Super Pee Wee A. I also knew my friend Gunner Williams was out there for the first time. How did you feel after your first time on the big track? I was tired. It took more energy to ride the big track. It was a lot harder. Did you do any extra training before going to the big track? I went to MX school at Dade City and learned how to properly sit on my bike. My parents also made me practice picking up and starting my bike by myself.
H
ave you ever ridden for 1 hour and 30 minutes? I have! Well I rode an extra 15 minutes. I felt pretty nervous before my race because it was my first 65 race and the track was pretty brutal. On my second lap I felt like I was about to pass out and when I came in for my pit stop I told my dad that I could not go anymore. He said one more lap buddy. When I came through the scoring chicane and I saw the checkered flag I was so happy. When I pulled off the track I cut off my bike and took my helmet off and I was very, very, very tired. I liked the part where you had two ways you could take a long turn or go straight up a hill. The part I liked the most was the straight up hill because it was fun and faster than the long turn. The part I hated was when you had to go straight down a hill and go up another hill right after it. When I took that part a few times I got used to it. The hardest part of the big track is you have to crank your bikes. Oh yeah, I forget one part I didn’t like is on the second turn after the start my back tire slid out and my bike cut off and when I fell on the ground I got ran over!!! After I finished and got cooled down I was excited for my next race at Samsula. I learned to eat more before the race and drink more during the race. I also learned not to ever take the hard ways. I can’t wait for my racing buddy Logan to move up from Pee Wee A. Gunner Williams #45 65-C
Great Job Austin and Gunner....The future of Florida Trail Riders !

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS RACE MOM/WIFE TRACK TIPS
O
ne big mom tip... Aiden and Kirsten are each responsible for their gear. They keep track of it and know that if they don’t have it... then mom helps. But they each do well with this. When race is over put in separate piles and mom puts back so they know where to find for the next ride. I also have pre made breakfast biscuits which helps for easy / time saver mornings Katie Martin Klucinec

our best bet is to clean everything up the day after you get home from racing. Once it’s all dry have each kid put their stuff back in their own bag and you’re ready to race the next time. Put their clean riding gear, including jerseys, pants, etc back in the gear bag as soon as it’s all clean and dry. Also get your little racers involved in the clean up and preparation from the beginning. Even the youngest racers can have a job. When Jackson was just 4 he had the job of unloading the items in the cooler and putting them back in the refrigerator. Another good idea is to have a standard list for each racer. They should go through their list before each race to make sure they have everything they need. Add more responsibility as your racer gets older. It’s a great sport for teaching life lessons and giving your child some ownership of their own success. Shannon Hennessy Parks

hen we camp I always get the food ready ahead of time. Like I will bake extra potato’s and then fry them up for dinner. I always try to take fresh corn on the cob in the husk, soak it in water and cook it on the grill for 30 min turning it every once in a while and it’s the best you will ever eat. Add a loaf of French bread and 4 eggs so you can whip up home fries French toast and the left over steak for a good breakfast. I have a small plastic water proof container and keep the chef ’s basic’s in so I can easily grab a few things from the frig before we leave. And never really have think about it. I also steam whatever begin I bring simply by wrapping it in foil with a little water in it and through it on the grill for 15 to 20 min. That might help some of the tent campers. Kim Mousette

y mommy advice would be to get everything packed and loaded the day before you leave for the race, this way you’re not rushing and don’t forget anything. Brooke Wilson Yahraus

e keep a large basket by the back door, and as I do the laundry from the weekend it goes back in the basket to be taken out the week of the race. I keep the same clothes all the way down to P.J.’s and underwear in the motor home. So everything is in one place and it is the same stuff, no second guessing about what to take. You add a few things for colder weather as needed and this is also in a box so all you have to do is go to it and add to the “Juanita” (the name of our motor home!!!) basket.. All ready to load
which Robin can do even if I am not around,, Vicki Arnold

t the end of a race weekend, it’s not about the list you made to remember what to take, the amount of time before to get things ready, or the amount of money you may need to have to get through the weekend, it’s about the family time and memories you made. Jan Hill

ill out your entry form before you get to the track or use Hole Shot Online Registration. Did you know that you can talk to someone at Rocky Mountain and they can look up all your Gift Cards you have on file in case you misplaced some?

hecklist!! Otherwise I’ll forget something!! Yes it’s always changing but so is Race Life!!! Gillian Lugar This makes things easier at a hotel or in the camper. Julie Miller
I
plan a meal with another family that we camp with. Helps with time and money, we decide on a meal and decide who will bring what for the meal. It makes dinner quick and easy. Also, I usually do pasta one night, they like to carb up the night before a race. So I make a pasta dish that I can prepare ahead of time at home, use a disposable pan, and warm it up at the race. Pasta feeds a lot of people it’s not expensive and easy to throw in the oven warm up. No need for a clean up as the disposable pan goes right in the trash when we are done! Lastly, we have clothes that we keep on the camper. So after a race weekend, it gets washed and put right back on the camper, no need to pack clothes for each race. It’s less likely we will forget something this way. Toni Ryll

JUST FOR FUN
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS In the spirit of Christmas, we asked some FTR members “What was your favorite dirt bike related gift you ever got?” Here’s what we found out. When I was 14 years old I got an 1994 XR100. Both my Dad and I cried when I opened the big crate. That changed my life. My family was an antimotorcycle family and I insisted so much that I guess Santa listened to me. Then after that racing was part of us. As of today my mom sometimes tells me that after all I ended up making a living out of motorcycles. So now it is more than that, it is a family thing. Fernando Guzman When I was about 8 I got a whole Troy Lee gear set up, helmet and all. Also my first dirt bike, a pw50. I got it when I was about 4 for Christmas. Dylan Rash Christmas 2008. I was 28 and had just started riding. My nephews pitched in their own money to get me a jersey with my name on it, my favorite one by far! Tony Livingston I got a $500 gift/check from my Grandpa when I was 16 to get my first used dirt bike. A 1982 Yamaha yz125. I’m 47 now.. that was a LONG time ago . Greg Milka My first dirt bike was by far the best gift ever. I was 11, and my parents got me a Honda XR100. I lived in a country club at the time but that didn’t stop me from ripping around the neighborhood, but that didn’t last long.... Ahah Tommy Hill Best Christmas gift ever would have been a Leatt brace my ex-wife got me. She is still “saving my neck” till this day... Andrew Lake I was 10 years old and got a 1978 Kawasaki KV75, my mom was not happy . Bobby Henderson
The best dirt bike related Christmas gift I have received would probably have to be the Honda 70 quad I got when I was 6 or 7 years old. Just the basic starter four wheeler for a kid and it got me into riding. We sold it to Amanda Taylor who raced Peewee quads on it and traded it in. About 6 months later my dad got me a PW80 I rode until I destroyed it at 12 or 13 years old and didn’t ride much until we got the big quad almost 2 years ago Around the time I turned 17. Dalton Ellis I was 16, it was an Alpinestar boot stocking. Michael Collins
Best dirt bike related Christmas gift? That’s easy. It’s the trusty steed that got me into this whole FTR scene. About 5 years ago my Dad gave me $700 which I took & bought a 1995 XR200 from Randy Faul. That was my first dirt bike ever & it’s what got me to where I am now. Just happy to be riding again ! Nick D’Angeleo Last year for Christmas I received a Shoei helmet after I crashed with my first one and found out it was un-usable. It was the best present because I didn’t think I’d have another Shoei once the first one was trashed. Max Coughlin My first dirt bike, a PW50 that got me hooked at age 4. Spencer St John My son got his PW50 and his first boots and riding outfit. When he was 3 that by far was one of my most memorable and favorite Christmases. Troy Smith Last Christmas Scott got me all new plastics, oversize tank and custom graphics! My bike looked fantastic!!! Katie Klucinec A Renthal pillow shaped like a handle bar pad Aiden Klucinec
The best bike related Christmas gift I ever got was my Polini 50. I had to been about 6 or 7 years old and my parents gave it to me in a very cool way. I was obsessed with the show Blue’s Clues so first I got new riding socks with a blue paw on it as the first clue, then new blue and white gear with another blue paw on it and then last was a new bike sitting in the drive way with a third blue paw. I was so pumped and it might go down as one of my favorite Christmas gifts. Kurt Lucas Blake Yahraus says his best dirt bike related present was when he walked into the shop and 2 65’s were sitting there with new gear sitting on them. He was probably 9 at the time. Z50, think I was 5. It was my first new dirt bike. I rode that think until the wheels fell off. Wish I still had it today. Michael Jones I didn’t start riding dirt bikes until I was 26, leaving me without any childhood dirtbike Christmas memories. However, 10 years after my first real dirt bike, a 2001 KTM 200 exc I bought my 2nd dirt bike, a 2011 350sx. The bike went from dealership to truck to my future wife’s living room, “under” the Christmas tree. At 31 years old I was ready to return to Hare Scrambles after many years away from racing.
