and our fitness. Have yourself checked and be aware of what your body tells you, know what kind of health issues you have and adjust accordingly. We have had a few situations already this year and we don’t need any more. As you read this, I will be having some tests done and probably a stress test preformed, not because I have to but because I asked for it. I want to know where I stand and if there’s anything that I need to be aware of. Please keep this in mind as we start the second half of our season. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

KEEPIN’ UP

appy New Year y’all! Wow, that sounded weird. Does anybody know what happened to the year 2015? I feel like time is just flying by, if only I could figure out how to go that fast on my motorcycle! 2015 has been quite interesting for me to say the least, but it was most definitely an unforgettable, productive and outstanding year. Anyhow, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday filled with family, food and most importantly love. I’m sure most of us enjoyed the gifts we received but we mustn’t forget what the holidays are really for. It’s that time of year again where most of us are setting New Year’s resolutions which means the gym is going to be packed for the first week of the year and then it will resume to normal activity! Yes, we have all been there. In other news, I’m gearing up for my spring semester to start. I will be striving to graduate with my Bachelor’s Degree from USF in December of 2016, which if I do say so myself is pretty darn exciting and scary. Besides getting a big girl job nothing major should change hopefully, considering it would take an act of congress to keep me away from the track. Oh, and I almost forgot to say thank you very much to all those who voted, it’s truly an honor to have been re-elected for VP. It’s very important to me that FTR sticks around for the long haul. I hope for my generation in FTR to have a place for their kids to grow up and race just as we did. FTR is my home away from home and I wouldn’t trade that for the world! I look forward to continuing this 20152016 season and to seeing all of you out at the track! As always, if any of you have questions, concerns or comments, feel free to contact me. Sincerely Amanda Richardson

ow! It’s January 2016 already. Where has the time gone? Here we are with half of our season behind us and the next thing you know the awards ceremony will be here and it will be time to start a new season. Along with a new year comes all the resolutions we make that seem to sound good but that’s about all that happens. I have been just as guilty of making these statements and although I have good intentions, things don’t seem to change when it comes to cutting back on all that good tasting stuff that actually is not good for you. So to help with burning all those extra calories, out come the bikes. I think my doctor will be proud. I’m getting exercise, burning calories and working on my cardio. Well come to find out that wasn’t what he had in mind when he told me I have to exercise and eat right, drink more water and get more sleep. What? Really. I’m still going to ride as much as possible but the biggest change I have been making is going to see my doctor on a regular basis. Even though I like seeing Donny and crew at the races, I don’t want to experience seeing him over top of me or pounding on my chest. The few times I have witnessed those type of procedures at our events just made me have cold chills. As we all swing a leg over the seat and get ready to go ride, be aware of our limitations, abilities

ear FTR Family, As I write this January article, I am once again reminded how that illusive entity we call “time” has changed. As a child, my year was easily measured by the distance between each Christmas. I can recall how grueling it was to wait and wait for the days and months to go by before we could hear Christmas songs and see all the decorations. Sometimes a single day would seem forever. As I grew older, I couldn’t wait to become a teenager. I remember being identified at the “just” age. You know, Oh he’s “just” 10. Oh he’s “just” 11. At twelve, I stood at the threshold of the ever, highly coveted, teenage years. Then it happened; I became a teenager! Not long after, I began to measure my year by living from one weekend to the next. Sometimes those five days between the weekends would seem to move faster than others but at that age, who cares! My next coveted goal in life was to reach eighteen. Why was that important? Because once I arrived there, I was only three months from graduating high school. I had no intention of going to college. Why would I do that when I was working and making good money as a teenager? Yes, I was just like every kid my age. The one thing I knew was…, I knew more than my parents. I had been living my life for eighteen years. What could they possibly teach me? Besides, all I cared about now was turning twenty one. And before I knew it, I was there. Isn’t life grand! Living completely oblivious to my surroundings, I didn’t seem to notice that “time” had picked up the pace. After boy meets girl, boy dates girl, then boy marries girl; now, three years have passed. I soon discover that I needed to go to college. After getting my undergrad and graduate degrees; eight years have now passed. After moving numerous times, working multiple jobs, and raising two boys, I woke up this morning only to discover that an additional twenty years have flown by. Wait a minute. How is that possible? At age fifty (and certainly given my family’s health history) I now realize that I will not be able to live twice my current age. As a matter of fact, that opportunity passed ten to fifteen years ago. Where have I been? What was I doing? Where is that little “time-

getter” critter? I’ll strangle him! Somehow he has snookered me. He must have cast a sleeping spell on me because there is no way I am as old as I am. Where has the time gone? Have you ever had this conversation with yourself? Don’t worry you are not alone. It has been a re-occurring theme in the minds of busy folks for ages. Instead, focus on the blessing you currently have. If you are a racer, thank the Lord that your body is still functioning well enough to enjoy this great sport! If that is not enough for you, at least thank the Lord that you survived 2015. Sure things in this life change; our families change; our jobs change; our living locations change; heck, even our bodies change. I once heard someone say, that death begins at birth. That sounds strange doesn’t it, but it’s true. Having said that let me remind you that it is a New Year! Cast off the old you and put on the new. Does that sound familiar? It is found in the Bible. 2 Corinthians 5:15: Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you. I want to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year! Enjoy it. Don’t live in the past. Look to Jesus Christ and the wonderful future that is available for you. It is yours. You only have to ask. I look forward to seeing you on the line! COACH ROBB

Perfect Timing- When to Eat, Stretch & Train for Optimum Performance

R

acers live by a clock: whether it is measuring lap times or how many months before a big national, we’re constantly thinking about where the time goes. We not only have to plan when we are going to ride, but also all the other things that have to be completed in a day that affects performance: eating, stretching and getting enough sleep. And when is the key, because there’s an optimal time for everything. If you eat, stretch or train at the wrong time, you could miss the associated performance benefits. To help you get the most from your riding & cross training efforts, here is a daily, weekly, and monthly guide to help you fit it all in. Daily planner: Eat, Foam Roll, Warm Up & Recover Properly Eat Prior to Working Out Eat soon before you head out and you could be plagued with G.I. (gastro-intestinal) issues. But if your last snack or meal was hours ago, you could run out of energy. The goal is to time your meals & snacks to provide a stabilized blood sugar level throughout your riding session or cross training work out. Accomplish this by eating every 2 hours after you wake up in the morning. Allow 2 hours after eating a complete meal before exercising – this allows for complete absorption and proper purging avoiding cramping. If you are tight on time, consume 8-10 ounces of Energy Fuel to provide your brain and muscles the easily absorbable carbohydrates and electrolytes necessary for optimum performance. Foam Rolling Use a foam roller before your pre-ride or work out stretching. The direct pressure helps vasodilate (open up) the tissue bringing fresh blood to the muscles about to be used. When you foam roll prior to stretching, you will reduce the activation of the Stretch Reflex, reducing your risk of a pulled muscle. Chronic aches and pains like Achilles tendinitis, planter fascia, etc. benefit from direct pressure before exercise because it increases blood flow & muscle elasticity. Riding & cross training is more productive when tender/sore spots are warm. Start by rolling with a tennis ball move to a lacrosse ball then manual massage then sport specific exercise. Warm Up There are three physiological benefits to an effective warm up. First, your warm up is an activity that allows the body to transition from inactivity to activity and to distribute the blood flow into the extremities. This distribution of blood warms up the muscles, tendons, cartilage and ligaments avoiding any cramping or tearing. Refuel Immediately after a riding or cross training session, your muscles and liver are looking for simple sugar to replenish your storage levels for the next workout. Your window of opportunity is 20-30 minutes after you finish because of an enzyme (glycogen synthase) that is at its highest activity level immediately following exercise. By consuming real food that is easily digestible is the key to optimum replenishment and recovery.

Ice your pain When to apply ice depends on the injury. If the pain is chronic, here’s the best post workout sequence; foam roll, static stretch, ice. But for acute pain, Skip foam rolling & stretching and ice immediately. The quicker you ice, the faster you slow down inflammation. Do a 5 minute on-off cycle as much as possible during the first 72 hours after injury. NOTE: Refrain from applying heat to the aggravated/injured for the first 72 hours – this will only increase the inflammation process. Weekly planner: Go Faster, Get Strong, Build Endurance Go Faster Than You Are Comfortable With 1-2 times a week, going faster than you are comfortable with push the mental-muscle combination to process faster rates of speed. Once you have built your strength & endurance, this is the final piece of finding new speed. Capture your average lap times in a 15 minute moto and then after a full recovery, complete 2 lap sprints where your goal is to be 1-2 seconds faster; the key is to stop after 2 laps and completely recover (failing to stop and recover will lead to a wreck and a possible injury). Due to the intensity of this workout, allow 2-3 days recovery in between sessions. Get Stronger Two sport specific strength training sessions per week can improve your on the bike strength. Being strong will improve your biomechanics, which enables you to go faster without increased risk of injury because of good form on the bike. Build Endurance Aerobic function – the ability to deliver oxygen to working muscles, is the biggest physical limiter in a racers program. Though this type of training is relatively “boring” to highly competitive riders and racers, it should represent 60-75% of your weekly volume of training (both on and off of the motorcycle). Racers have this mindset that only sprint work creates speed, this is not correct. You have to create the infrastructure to deliver oxygen to the muscles – endurance training accomplishes this. It is like building a big bore motor and then putting a carb on the bike that this too small; if the motor can’t get enough fuel, it doesn’t run to its true potential. Monthly Planner: Schedule a Massage & Evaluate Speed, Strength & Endurance Schedule a Massage Scheduling a massage once a month will not only relieve muscle tightness, but also help identify any tight muscles that are associated with bad biomechanics specific to riding and cross training (i.e. overuse injuries). Regular massage addresses issues immediately, rather than them develop over time into a pulled muscle or strained muscle attachment. Consistent massage allows your therapist to identify patterns with your body and can help you develop a strategy throughout your race season to ensure that your muscles are able to move within the optimum range of motion (increasing your strength and improving your endurance). Note: massage does not release toxins or metabolic waste, but rather reduces the inflammation process associated with micro traumas tears associated with exercise and load bearing exercises (weight lifting & plyometrics). Until next time, Train Smart-Not Hard! -Coach Robb

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS CATCHING UP WITH BRYCE KOSTER

B

By Kurt Lucas

Morgan Bowman Photo

ryce Koster has been killing the results since his comeback to racing in 2014. After dominating races in Junior B Bryce made the jump up to the Sunday ranks at the start of the 2014 season. Bryce would not stop there winning three B 250 races before being promoted to A 250 and finishing third overall for the year. Clearly Bryce put in the work over the summer as he has won all four A 250 hare scrambles and two enduros this year, he finished second overall for FTR at Perry Mountain. I decided to catch up with the 17-year-old Sorrento native to see what he has been up to and his plans for the rest of the season and beyond.

2007 PeeWee B Champ

2014-2015 Sportsman of the Year

Kurt Lucas: Hey Bryce how is it going? Bryce Koster: It’s going great, ready to do this interview. KL: Awesome, well first why don’t you tell us about yourself. BK: Well I am 17-years-old and a junior at Mt. Dora High School and live in Sorrento, Florida. As for riding goes I started at around two and a half years old and began racing around four. I won my first championship in 2007 in Peewee B and kept racing until around 2012 and then took a little break from it all. I came back in 2014 and started to take it serious for the first time. KL: How did you first get into riding dirt bikes? BK: My dad used to race back in the day and right around the time I was born he started getting back into it. My older brother Kyle would race also and growing up I always wanted to be better at things than him so I got right into the sport and was hooked instantly. KL: I remember watching you race on 50s and you raced against my little brother on 65s but then you disappeared until really about two years ago. What happened? BK: Well what happened was my dad quit racing for a little while but we all still rode and only raced every now and then. In 2012 we decided to give the GNCC series a shot and things started to get really serious and it took all the fun out of it and I quit riding all together pretty much. It wasn’t until two years ago where I decided to start riding again with my buddy and neighbor Steven Loomis. I just rode and had as much fun as I could with it. I realized I was pretty quick and decided to get back into racing full time. KL: You definitely came back swinging. Do you think taking a few years off made you faster in the end? BK: It helped a lot because when we decided to try the GNCC series there was no off time and eventually it became no fun. Now I just try and have as much fun as possible and always remember why I started racing, for the fun of it. KL: That makes a lot sense. I’m sure riding with Steven helped a lot as well because two years ago he was killing the B Open class. BK: It helped a ton because around that time he was racing three different series I believe and he was training pretty hard. It was convenient to only live five minutes apart as it allowed us to hit the gym together or go mountain biking and most importantly ride together.

KL: I’ve been to the Loomis-Koster compound once. It definitely has a rough couple of tracks to train on. I bet it is awesome to have a few tracks literally in your backyard. BK: Oh yeah! I have a track literally right behind my house and a really nice track in-between Steven and I that I can ride my bike to. Steven has a couple places behind his house as well. It really helps when the GNCC guys come down and can ride multiple tracks instead of beating up on one. KL: So you’ve been training with GNCC riders? The secret comes out. BK: Yeah every year there are a few guys that stay at the house for a few weeks. Last year Jason Thomas, Mark Heresco, and Alex Teagarden came down. Heresco usually stays the longest and is really fun to ride and train with. KL: That must help riding with high caliber riders. BK: Yeah for sure, every time they come down I learn a lot. KL: Lets talk about this season. You’re winning A 250, which is arguably the second fastest class in the state behind AA. Tell me how that feels. BK: It’s a great feeling winning such a fast class. A lot of hard work and dedication has gotten me to this point and I plan on continuing to work hard and get up to the AA class. KL: Are you thinking AA for next season? BK: That is up in the air at this point. Pops is saying A Open but I haven’t rode a 450 yet so who knows where I’ll end up. KL: No need to rush that jump and it is still too early to be thinking about next season. Let’s shift gears here and talk about your family a bit. I understand your dad still rides? BK: He used to race a lot back when I was on minis but then I started getting really serious and he sort of lost interest in racing. He was actually really good at one point but he still rides a ton. I don’t think it is possible to get him away form his bike, he’s addicted for sure. KL: That’s awesome. I remember racing your brother in juniors but since then I haven’t seen much of him. Is he still riding? BK: Nope. I don’t think he’s touched a bike in years, which is a shame because he was a really good rider. KL: I do hear he helps you out in the gym though. BK: He actually got really into bodybuilding and other fitness stuff. He used to be kind of big and he shaved off a lot of weight so he knows what he is doing. He helps me out with workouts as well as showing me how to eat right.

KL: Well all of us who race hare scrambles know how big fitness is. Aside from moto do you have any other hobbies or play any other sports? BK: I just got into golf, I’m not very good but it is a ton of fun. I play with Billy Sharff and my pops and they are pretty good so I plan on catching on one of these days. KL: You could be the next Rickie Fowler! How is school going? You’re a junior, what are your plans for after high school? BK: I’d like to dual enroll next year and take some business management classes. I’m not exactly sure what I want to do but I figured it would be good to take some classes that will help me later on in life. KL: I couldn’t agree more. So us moto guys are head cases and everyone knows that. What are some pre race rituals that you have? BK: I actually don’t have too many. My dad helps me stretch beforehand and gives me the same pep talk before each race, we bump knuckles and then he tells me the most important thing, to have fun.

KL: How important is it for you to have your dad there with you before every race. BK: I can’t even explain how important it is. It takes a lot of weight off of my shoulders and I feel much more comfortable when he is there. KL: What is one thing your dad always tells you in order to motivate you to do your best? BK: “You work harder than anyone else out there, nobody can touch you!” KL: Who is your biggest supporter? BK: My biggest supporter would have to be my Grandpa John. He has helped me so much and pushed me to get to where I am today. A huge thank you goes out to him because I wouldn’t be here without him. KL: Describe yourself in one word. BK: Determined. KL: What is your goal for the rest of the season? BK: I’d like to be in the top five overall at every race and win out in A 250 then move up to A Open for the last four races. KL: Whom would you like to thank? BK: I would like to thank Bell Helmets, Seminole Powersports, MRW Suspension, IMS Products, MSR, Scooters Performance, GUTS Seats, Salty Sailor Co., my mom and dad, brother, grandparents and my girlfriend Kimberly!

A Big Thanks to Central Florida Powersports and Jason Ennis for bringing out Jason Raines and those awesome Yamaha demo bikes. It was a great time for everyone that took their turn riding the new 2016 off-road models. I have to say my favorite was the 250FX!

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS MEETING MINUTES

Record of December 19, 2015 FTR Executive Committee Decision FTR Vice President Amanada Richardson notified the Executive Committee that an e-mail had been received from the Treasure Coast Trail Riders (TCTR) informing FTR that the club would not be able to conduct its January 30-31, 2016 hare scrambles due to the loss of the Brighton property. Randy Faul, President of the Sarasota Area Dirt Riders (SADRA), asked that SADRA be allowed to pick up that date as a replacement date for the rained-out SADRA date (October 10-11). The Executive Committee conducted an electronic vote (via e-mail) to approve a motion to delete the TCTR event from the Hare Scrambles schedule, declare the date an open date, and assign the date to SADRA as a replacement for their cancelled October 10-11 date. Electronic responses from all seven EC members were tabulated on December 19, 2015. The motion passed by a 6 to 0 vote, with FTR President Randy Faul abstaining due to his position with SADRA.
