FROM THE RULE BOOK

Any section of the trail marked by a pair of double over-and under GREEN arrows on both sides of the trail indicates the competitors must ride between the two sets of arrows and cannot ride outside either pair of arrows. Any time a rider leaves the trail as defined above, (either by “line picking:’ overshooting turns, emergency, etc.) that rider must return to the trail and re-enter at the point they left.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS THE PREZ

SAYS

I

t’s July. Summer time is here and that means school is out and time to take vacations. With that being said, we have our awards ceremony scheduled for July 30 this year in Daytona and that would be a nice spot to take the family. By the time you read this plans will have been made and we will be waiting for the weekend to arrive. I know for a couple of us our famous gathering at Aunt Catfish’s will be scheduled for that Friday evening and who knows where that will lead us to. For me, Uncle Bill and crew we have been making this a yearly tradition as it started back in the NASCAR weekends during the 4th of July. Now we don’t have to worry about the heat and whether the generator is going to run for four days while camped out at the speedway as we have graduated to the Hilton. The days of getting rained out and having to build bridges and a porch in front of our campers just to get in and out are hopefully over. We still talk about all that craziness on how it used to be and just laugh at one another as we make more memories that will live forever. Along with us old guys still making memories, practice making some with your family and especially your children as there’s very few chances with everyone being so busy and with all the distractions and in today’s world. Hope to see all of my FTR family in a couple weeks. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS CHAPLAIN’S

CORNER

D

ear FTR Family, As I sit down to write a few thoughts, I cannot help but mourn that my “summer” is already half over! Where has the time gone? I still have so much to do; places I would like to go; things that need to be done. Yet, the clock keeps a steady pace. It is never wavering, always moving forward. It appears that the older I become, the busier I get. I keep thinking that soon the pace will slow down and I will be able to take care of the many things that need to be done. Yeah, right! Nevertheless, every day most of us wake up, drink our cup of coffee, and discover that we find ourselves in the same routine. We ask, “Is it going to be this way forever? In short, the answer is no. Sometimes you just have to pull yourself out of the rut and regroup. Remember, the clock is constant and consistent. When you are competing in a race (specifically hare scrambles and enduro’s), you are not only competing against another individual, but you are competing against time. The race always begins and ends on a specific minute. When my kids are making that last lap, I always remind them to pick up the pace. It is so easy to become complacent and lose your focus. If you are not careful, you will find out at the end of the hare scramble that your last lap did not even count. Or, as in an enduro, after you have struggled miles through a long and brutal section, you finally arrive at the check only to discover you houred out by only seconds. How disappointing. How do I know these things, I have been there. I have experienced them. I recall a Saturday race (I think it was this past season – they sort of run together) when, at the riders meeting, I announced we knew we were going to

experience some bad weather. If there is lightning within a certain distance of the course, the race will be called. This has been done at least two or three times. When that happens, the race has an unexpected ending. Life is just like a race. For some the race is long; for others it is short. However, there is one thing I know for sure. Life is always unexpected. Therefore, we need stability. We need to have peace in what we have no control over. That is found only in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world, that He (God) gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” These are not only words to live by; these are the words for hope, peace, and eternal life. Have a wonderful summer. I look forward to seeing you at the banquet. Till then. Your friend, Andy Dickson FTR Chaplain Master A #121

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS PITBITS REKLUSE EXP 3.0

H

ave you ever wanted a Rekluse but didn’t want to fork out $899 for the Core EXP? Why not give the EXP 3.0 a try? For $500 less you get the same features that makes the Auto Clutch so dominate in the off road industry. The EXP 3.0 prevents stalling, allows you to start and stop without ever touching the clutch lever, and still retains full control of a manual clutch. What brings the cost down is that, with the EXP 3.0, you utilize all of your OEM clutch components except for, in most cases, 2-3 friction and steel plates which is replaced by the

Rekluse Clutch Pack. I’ve been uses the EXP 3.0 in my YZ250 for about a year now and love it. There has been minimal adjustments needed and still retains a very positive feel on the trails. What’s nice about the Rekluse company is that they stand by their products and there is always someone available to talk to and help. If you decide you want to take the EXP 3.0 to the next level you can upgrade to the Core EXP for an additional cost. The EXP 3.0 goes for $399 and is available for most Bikes and Quads.

In case you haven’t heard, FMF is selling the DA8 STRONG Tee to help support off-road legend Destry Abbott battle his way through Leukemia. 100% of the proceeds go to Destry’s medical bills which are sure to be enormous. You can get it on the FMF website for $25.

Sept 10-11: The woods are fresh and tight, and covered in that trademark black NY loam. It rains here quite a bit, and the course will get tough due to the soft soil. But it offers better traction when wet than the slippery clay in Ohio. But it doesn’t matter. The New Yorkers are a hearty bunch and they’re not afraid to tackle the mud.

Sept 24-25: Located just outside Morgantown, West Virginia, Marvin’s Mountain Top offers up plenty of the rough terrain that the Wild & Wonderful state is known for. The ground at the Mountain Top is exactly what you would expect from a mountain, it’s rocky! The soil is a mix of clay and excellent top soil in some of the fresher wood sections. The course starts on top of the mountain, and makes its way around the edges, and slightly down the sides of the mountain, don’t worry about any technical hill climbs as many of the hills are a nice gradual incline.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS GETTING TO KNOW: Jimmy Moore

W

hen you think of the future of FTR you have to think of the youth in the organization. Well, leading the charge is one of Sarasota, Florida’s finest, Jimmy Moore. Like a lot of kids in the sport, this little ripper has been racing practically his entire life. Unlike a lot of kids his age, this nine year old has already won four championships. Dekdef Photos sat down with the wiser than his age racer to learn a little bit more about him.

DD: It is Summertime have you been you practicing? JM: Yea..I’ve been riding the 110 a lot. DD: Where do you practice at? JM: Dink’s house. He has a little pit bike track in his yard and then he has a big BIG private practice track . DD: So how old were you when you started racing? JM: Four. DD: What was your first bike? JM: Umm.. The TTR 50. DD: What got you into racing dirt bikes? JM: My Uncle Greg. DD: Did he race? JM: Yea.. He raced with my dad. DD: How many championships have you won? JM: Four. DD: How many classes have you been in since you started racing? JM: Four. DD: Four? That’s like one a year. How old are you now? JM: I’m nine. Well I did Pee Wee C , Pee Wee B, Pee Wee A two times and the I just did 65 C. DD: You raced 65C Saturday afternoon at the SADRA race for the first time right? JM: Yea. I did two races, Peewee A and 65 C and got first and second. DD: You got second in your first 65C race? JM: Yea..I would have gotten first but I was at mile marker 5 and there’s 6 miles and I felt second place coming on and I was half way through mile marker 5 so I was charging and was in a whoop section and I just went over the bars and he passed me. He saw me. I flew like fifteen feet. DD: Who was it that passed you? JM: Number 17.. One of Jason Ennis’s riders. DD: So did you get up on your own or did somebody help you? JM: No, there was nobody around. I got up on my own and two kicks the bike started up and right before the chicane I was on him but I couldn’t pass him. DD: I noticed your 50 is orange and your 65 is green. JM: We’re going to go to orange again. We got the green 65 from Dave Yahraus, Blake’s old bike. I rode it for the GNCC’s at Hogwaller and I got 11th out of 18 and at the Georgia race I got 18th. DD: Who’s your favorite person to train with? JM: Probably Blake. We go out to his aunt’s house and he has a track there. They have this vacant piece of property and they have a really

tough track there and we do fifteen minute motos and stuff. DD: Does he teach you and give you tips? JM: Yea, his dad Dave has his pit board out there and he’s telling me where to brake and what gear I need to be in. Sometimes Blake rides behind me and sometimes I chase him and try to keep up. DD: What is your favorite memory of all time on the track? JM: When I was at the Bartow Motocross Track and I cleared one of the triples on a 65. Well it was a table top kind of thing and another little down and I cleared the whole thing. DD: Were you scared? JM: Eh, not really.. There was a bunch of doubles and I just nailed it after the last double and I hit it. I cleared it no problem and then I made it every lap. The landing was like really smooth and there’s a big sweeping turn. DD: What is favorite part of the track? Tight corners, sand, mud etc. JM: Pines..Because there’s lots of different places you can go and lots of different lines swerving in and out of them. DD: What’s your favorite memory off the track when you’re not racing? JM: When we were rode the SADRA pit bike race. DD: Did that intimidate you being at the starting line between Jesse Ansley and Jack Chambers? JM: No. I knew they were just having fun and they weren’t going to cut me off or anything and I know they are really good riders. DD: What do you think your strongest attribute of racing is? JM: Accelerating and looking ahead. DD: What’s your weakest attribute? JM: Breaking probably. I stop to early. DD: Do you have a favorite track? JM: That’s hard...I like Bartow for motocross and Gatorback for hare scrambles. DD: Were you nervous your first time at Gatorback? JM: No, I like the hills. I like to go to croom and ride on the hills and valleys. DD: If you are in second place during a race what are you thinking? JM: I talk to myself, “You can do this can do this, come on, it’s a long race, save your energy.” DD: What are your thoughts if you get a bad start? JM: I prefer to get the hole shot but bad starts are fun because I get to pass people. DD: What is the scariest part when you are racing? JM: Stumps and animals. I almost hit a deer at the last race, he stood in the middle of the track so I took a line to go around him.

DD: Hare scramble or motocross, what is your preference? JM: HS is better and it’s more fun in the woods; the worst part is you could hit a tree. DD: What is your hairiest time on the track? JM: When getting fetty swap. DD: What? JM: Fetty Swap, you know when your back end goes side to side. I lost it once at the Nutter’s and got fetty swapped and Kyle didn’t know which way to go, he went the way I fell, he hit my bike and hurt his knee real bad. I didn’t get hurt. Once at L Cross Blake and I went to the swimming pond and we were running and we stepped on a big rattler, we used our fishing poles to distract him with the lure. He was curled up and rattled. Then one time (explains all the turns) and turned into the woods to go straight and got t-boned and Cameron rode over my arm at broke it. I did not know it was broken until we got home. DD: Do you have a pre race ritual? JM: I listen to music to get my head focused and stuff, country and normal music. I do not like to listen to the same song, it gets boring. I turn on music to sleep, it clears my mind. DD: What do you think about your New time slot on Saturdays. JM: I like it because I get more time to rest and not get up so early. I will get to see some of my sisters race and then I will go to practice. DD: What’s you favorite part of track building ? JM: Building creek crossing and like putting up arrows. Uncle Bill gave me his belt pouch to wear and I went on the track and helped others. DD: What’s your favorite thing to do at HS besides racing? JM: Man hunt, pond, fishing, forts and watching the races. At the last race we had a paddle ball game in the dark against the adults, that was a lot of fun. DD: Do you have a trophy preference? JM: The wood ones, tall and wide. Wood looks better and we hang our trophies around the ceiling in the garage all the way around, all our family trophies. DD: Do you work on your bike? JM: I change the oil and clean my air filters. DD: Do you workout out at all with weights or machines? JM: No..When I’m at my dad’s warehouse, I am stacking up stuff and get paid $10 an hour; we worked there for three hours this morning actually so I got thirty dollars and I’m saving up my money and stuff. When we’re there stacking stuff, every time I get something heavy I lift it up like three times and I set it down. I keep stacking stuff up like that. I’ll carry three boxes with really big glass jars with like chutney in them and

they’re really heavy; four cases, eight in each, I carry two boxes. I have dropped a few. DD: If you were not racing what would you be doing? JM: I would do BMX. I will ride the new Sarasota BMX track. Thursday night is free ride. DD: When you get older who would you like to be like? JM: MX, Ryan Dungy because he rides KTM and he is a nice guy. I got his signature on my hat. GNCC, I would like to be like Kailub Russell because he’s fast and I want to win. FTR, I would like to be fast like Jesse Ansley. He is SMOOTH; Smooth is fast. Some people are faster but not smooth and cant take it well. Jesse is smooth and he can take it well and knows what to do. When we were working at our SADRA race Jesse spent more time with us and gave us more tips on corners and braking. DD: When you retire what kind of job would you like to have? JM: I would like to be a vendor and sell stuff and still have fun at the races. DD: You know they don’t have fun. Look at Shane, he is changing tires from sun up to sun down. JM: Yeah, I’m going to be a food vendor. I like to cook. I will sell hotdogs, burgers, and homemade flat bread pizza. At home I take the flat bread and put it in the toaster and get it all heated up and crunchy, add sprinkle cheese and microwave for 15 seconds and then add pepperoni and I use different toppings. DD: What’s your favorite food? JM: Mac and Cheese and scallops and shrimp. DD: What is your favorite color? JM: Orange. I like everything orange like Carrots and popsicles. DD: Do you eat healthy or eat like a normal kid? JM: I eat like a kid. I eat ice cream and I like Italian ices, they are very good and have only 5 grams of sugar. DD: Who do you look up to the most and why? JM: My mom and dad. Because they support me and give me my bikes and do my mechanics and stuff. They get my bikes ready and buy me gear. DD: Think you will ever run for an FTR office? JM: I speak at our SADRA meetings its fun but I get a little nervous at the banquet when we have to go on stage to get our trophies. DD: How about you scroll your phone and pick some random numbers and we will call and ask them to describe you and ask you a question? JM: Ok. First up, Grandma, who says, “Jimmy for his age is very, very, very smart with many talents and is not only the most intelligent young man but polite as well.” Grandma wanted to know what he likes that makes him really happy everyday? JM: Riding for fun (bike related) and FAMILY. Next up Uncle Greg. He described his nephew as the most attentive, detail orientated kid and has the biggest desire to learn to be able to do things for himself. Uncle Greg wants to know what Jimmy’s race breakfast is. JM: Eggs, scrambled or sunny side up and bacon. Cousin Jonathan said he is so smart for his age, very determined and motivated. Jonathan’s question was, “What do you like most about FTR?” JM: Having fun!! We called in Jimmy’s best friend Korbin. Things took a twist as these two are a riot together and the moment turned out to be a future story.

PRODUCT REVIEW

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

W

14

hen it comes to getting your bike race ready one item that many people overlook is the seat. I mean how much time do you actually sit on it in competition? Well, if you put a Seat Concepts seat on your ride you’ll try to figure out how to sit on it even more. Now, I know Seat Concepts isn’t the only seat manufacturer in a flooded market but it’s one of the newest and quickly becoming the top off-road/adventure riding seat in the industry. Just check out all of the off-road bike builds featured in the industry magazines and chances are you’ll find a SC saddle on it. I’ve ridden with a SC seat on my YZ250 for a few months now and love it. Not only did I notice the excellent quality and, right away, how comfortable this seat is but I also noticed right away how uncomfortable my stock seat was. The wider seating area and the softer, yet firm, made to order foam makes all the difference. I chose the black and blue “gripper” seat cover style which keeps you planted firm in the turns without worrying about sliding around. Each cover is hand made in Southern California with many seat options to choose from including carbon, embossed, plain, and suede depending on your type of bike and riding you do. New to Seat Concepts is the Competition line of race seats called the Super Grip Cover. This is the most extreme seat you can get your hands on. It comes with a super grip top, ribs that are inserted with foam to improve resistance to sliding on acceleration or braking and industry leading rubber grip patches to make sure you have enough grip with your knees so you have better control.

Seat Concepts offers seat options for ten bike manufacturers, from Beta’s to Yamaha’s ,and in many color combinations to give your bike some added style. You can do the installation yourself or have the pro’s do it for you for an small fee. You can’t go wrong with a seat from SC. Just ask FTR member and Rocky Mountain ATV Husky rider, Luke Parson’s. “People ask me a lot how I like my Seat Concepts Seat, and it’s a easy response for me, I love it! There’s a lot that goes into making a quality seat, and the Seat Concepts guys have figured it out. On my Husky FC250 I run the Super Grip competition seat because of how well it grips in any condition and how well it holds up, the rubber sides hold up really well to knee braces, and the ribs on top of the seat keep you from sliding back, especially in acceleration bumps coming out of ruts or corners. They also look really good and come in whatever colors you want to match your graphics.” For more information check out their web site at www. seatconcepts.com or ,as an added perk for FTR members, contact our Seat Concepts rep Randy Faul. Seat covers run $89.99 and foam/cover combos run $174.99 with many of the seats available with a low/tall option. For all of our Quad riders don’t forget you can get the same quality seats from their sister company, Quad Tech. www. quadtech-atv.com.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS PHOTO REPORT

T

he 2016-2016 FTR race season was one for the record books. With all of the rain cancellations and reschedules, it was, to say the least, very trying on every ones schedules. Thanks to the South East Florida Trail Riders, the 45th annual running of FTR Hare Scrambles was capped off with a great event. With the June temps pushing 100 degrees, everyone involved worked hard to send us into the summer. Championships were won and memories were made. A big Thank You goes out to all of the Photobrappers that stuck it out to put those memories on digital film.

ear FTR Members, Friends & Family,

I would like to welcome you to the 45th Annual Florida Trail Riders Awards Expo Celebration. Can you believe it…..45 years! There is a lot to see so please take the time to meet and greet all our great vendors. These people support our sport so let’s show them some love. We have lots of fun and games in store for everyone along with some great raffles and maybe a surprise or two. I would like to acknowledge Garrett Edmisten on 10 years of FTR overall wins. What an accomplishment. I’ve watched him throughout his racing career and there is two things for sure the guy is smooth and fast! Please take the time to thank everyone you see helping today. I would like to personally thank the members of the expo committee and all the volunteers who have stepped up to help. Without their dedication this event would not be possible. I hope you enjoy the day. See you at the races. Best regards, Ellen Fleming
