FROM THE RULE BOOK

Any section of the trail marked by a pair of double over-and under GREEN arrows on both sides of the trail indicates the competitors must ride between the two sets of arrows and cannot ride outside either pair of arrows. Any time a rider leaves the trail as defined above, (either by “line picking:’ overshooting turns, emergency, etc.) that rider must return to the trail and re-enter at the point they left.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS THE PREZ

SAYS

B

y the time you read this our season will be complete and it will be time for some summer time activities. Most of us will shift to the water, a trip or a vacation somewhere to get away and of course there are those that are already scheming to do some riding in other parts of the country. I might be one of those people that just can’t get enough and is looking for any opportunity or excuse to do a road trip, or a men’s trip. Just think of the possibilities, a week in the mountains, a long weekend off riding somewhere. My best and all time favorite is to load up everything possible, start out with a outdoor national somewhere in the northeast, from there just go find places to ride and be gone for weeks. How’s that sound? The only advice I can offer on that is to bring a spare bike because somebody will probably yard sale and break the bike, it’s been known to happen. On another note, Sadra was finally able to promote their event last month as the weather finally cooperated. I don’t even know where to start with the appreciation I feel with the event. First and foremost, all the credit goes to the club members and other volunteers that worked their butts off accomplishing a first for our club and maybe for FTR in having two complete separate courses for Saturday and Sunday with the start being used both days. I know there has been a few clubs offer separate quad courses and I’m sure they can relate to how much extra work it takes to accomplish this. Add to the fact that this was a new piece of property with a lot of new challenges and you have months of preparation, planning and sitting in the county permitting office waiting your turn. Race weekend was pretty busy as usual with all the regular stuff that goes along with starting out on Saturday morning and as the day went on things was flowing. Saturday evening was the

KEEPIN’ UP

enough, be able to continue racing. Growing up in FTR has definitely provided me with a strong influence of who I am today. Having the opportunity to meet so many people, interact with different families and all enjoy racing together really has prepared me for more things in the world than I ever thought possible. There’s not a doubt in my mind that this organization and the people in it have more than assisted me in being qualified to take on a career and even more so, the adult world as a whole. So all in all, don’t forget to apply for the scholarship if eligible and I hope everyone enjoys their summer break!

WITH AMANDA

A

s summer break rolls around for most students I will be profoundly stuck in the books. December can’t come soon enough! To be able to walk across that stage having earned a Bachelor’s degree will be extremely rewarding to say the least. It’s been a journey and it’ll be on to the next one after that but, for now, it’s crunch time. Speaking of education, this is a shout out to remind all the high school seniors, and or parents of high school seniors, who are associated with the organization to apply for the FTR scholarship. There are typically three winners: one who receives 50% of the money raised and the other two split the remaining 50% for 25% each. The deadline is June 15, 2016 and the winners will be announced at the banquet in Daytona on July 30th. I encourage those who are eligible to participate, not only it is a great help for students’ financial purposes, it’s also a chance to let the organization give back to you. This organization would be nothing without it’s members; this is one way for us to be able to show our appreciation. Plus we all have to eventually grow up, go to work for a living and hopefully if we do well

highlight of the day with the pit bike race. Our man Ron organized and along with his crew put on one heck of a show. Looks like it’s going to be part of our future events now as it was well received and everyone had a ton of fun. Along came Sunday and after a few changes after practice things, it was time to head to the starting line. Our crew had about an hour to make those changes and be ready for the first line to make their first lap and the pressure was on them to handle it. They did an outstanding job of making those changes with no delay to the schedule, Uncle Bill was very happy with that. Lol With skipping a year and having several cancellations and postponements the following season, we were able to come back and offer a new piece of property for our membership to experience. I have to say Thank You again to all of the SADRA crew, dual club members from OSDR for stepping up and giving so much to make this happen. Along with my club and the other FTR clubs that do this because it’s in our blood, we like to do it and its fun, take the time to tell all the clubs Thanks for what they do. I also want to thank the membership, racers, families and everyone that supported our event to make it a success. Along with everyone being on their best behavior, you guys left the parking/camping area absolutely spotless! Unbelievable and it had to be the best ever in the years I have been doing this. Please carry this habit on into next year as this really helps the clubs and more importantly, it shows the landowner that we are responsible and that we appreciate his hospitality. Speaking of our landowner, he was very pleased and actually called me just the other day inquiring about what kind of bike would be good for his nephew as it looks like he has got the fever! Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS PITBITS REKLUSE EXP 3.0

H

ave you ever wanted a Rekluse but didn’t want to fork out $899 for the Core EXP? Why not give the EXP 3.0 a try? For $500 less you get the same features that makes the Auto Clutch so dominate in the off road industry. The EXP 3.0 prevents stalling, allows you to start and stop without ever touching the clutch lever, and still retains full control of a manual clutch. What brings the cost down is that, with the EXP 3.0, you utilize all of your OEM clutch components except for, in most cases, 2-3 friction and steel plates which is replaced by the

Rekluse Clutch Pack. I’ve been uses the EXP 3.0 in my YZ250 for about a year now and love it. There has been minimal adjustments needed and still retains a very positive feel on the trails. What’s nice about the Rekluse company is that they stand by their products and there is always someone available to talk to and help. If you decide you want to take the EXP 3.0 to the next level you can upgrade to the Core EXP for an additional cost. The EXP 3.0 goes for $399 and is available for most Bikes and Quads.

In case you haven’t heard, FMF is selling the DA8 STRONG Tee to help support off-road legend Destry Abbott battle his way through Leukemia. 100% of the proceeds go to Destry’s medical bills which are sure to be enormous. You can get it on the FMF website for $25.

June 11-12: After its addition to the GNCC schedule in 2015, Tomahawk became an instant favorite for many riders. Our friends at the Western New York Off-Road Association have hosted races at the property for a number of years and it has even received honors as their “Best Hare Scramble of the Year” in 2012.

June 25-26: The toughest, most spectacular and most unique race on the whole GNCC tour, the race is set in the upscale ski village at Snowshoe, West Virginia’s largest ski resort. The surroundings are not only several steps above the typical GNCC course, they’re also plusher than many luxury resorts. Unlike a typical GNCC dead-engine start in a field, riders at the Snowshoe line up on a paved road in groups of five. They start live engine every 10 seconds, which makes for a spectacular scene.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS GETTING TO KNOW

I

HOLLY LANGFORD

’ve been watching Holly Langford ride since she was on a PW 50 in the Peewee C class. Being in the same club as her allowed me to watch Holly progress as a rider and racer. She worked her way up through 65 Girls and Mini Girls and made her mark in Mini B and eventually Mini A. After a few excellent rides in Mini A, I knew Holly Langford was the real deal. She is now in Women B and riding very well grabbing win after win. I decided to catch up with the 16 year old from Ft. Lauderdale to hear her thoughts on her success and what the future entails.

Interview by Kurt Lucas season was a blast, if I remember correctly she on the first half and I won most of the last half but she ended up getting a wellearned jacket at the end of the year.

KL: It was definitely fun to watch. If I can remember correctly you raced Mini B at the last race that year and absolutely dominated the race. HL: Yeah, I won that one and the next season I won a couple more and was promoted to Mini A. KL: I don’t think there has ever been a girl that raced Mini A, at least not since I’ve been around since 1997. You put together some great rides that year against some tough competition like Jesse Ansley. Were you happy with being able to compete on such a high level?

Glenn Gardner Photo

KL: Hello Holly how are you doing today? HL: I am great! Ready for this interview. KL: Excellent, can you start off by telling us a little about yourself? HL: Well I am 16 years old and am from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I race a KTM 150 in the Women’s B class. KL: How did you first get into riding? HL: My brother, Jack, first started riding when he was 9 and it just looked really fun. I nagged my parents about how I wanted a bike for weeks on end and they finally got me a little PW 50 to rip around on. KL: How did the whole FTR thing come about? HL: My mom works for Randy Rash’s company SeaVision and he told us about it. We did one race and fell in love. KL: It definitely is an addicting sport. How old were you when you started? HL: I got my bike when I was 7 and did my first race when I was 8. KL: So while most girls your age were probably getting their start in cheerleading and gymnastics you were out racing against the boys on your dirtbike. What did your friends think of all this? HL: I think they thought it was kind of weird at first but then they got used to the idea and ended up thinking it was pretty awesome! KL: Well it is awesome! You came into the sport right around when they came up with the “Girls Class”. Do you think it hurt or helped you as a rider to only be racing girls and with the boys? HL: Starting in the girls class definitely helped me. It motivated me to race more because I could finish in a higher position in the girl’s class versus the boys. So no, I don’t think it has hurt me because I can be pushed not only by the girls but the boys also, that’s why I love that all of the girl’s classes start on the same row as the boys. It lets us girls see how we do against them and eventually race against them like I have done before racing Mini A. KL: You always had a good group to ride with as well. You raced a lot with the Julia and Kayla Cone who have been killing the boys classes recently and Emma Chambers who has been qualifying for Loretta’s and doing very well in Junior B. I think the turning point in your riding level happened that year you and Emma battled in Mini Girls all year. Is this true? HL: Oh definitely! I love Emma she is awesome to race with! We’ve been going at it since we were on 65’s. That Mini Girls

HL: Yeah absolutely. I think it made me a better rider overall because I was racing with people a lot faster than me. It was difficult but I learned a lot and had a blast racing with everyone. KL: Let’s fast forward to now. You ended up jumping to Sunday a year early and I was a little surprised to see you race the women’s class because you’ve been very competitive racing against the boys. What made you decide Women B over like B 200? HL: My initial goal was to try and win Women A before I rode anything else so I just figured I’d start out in Women B and work my way up. KL: Well you’re definitely on the right track, you’ve won every single race this year, did you expect this your first year racing on the rougher Sunday tracks? HL: No not at all, it is such a big change going from an hour and a half race to a two-hour race. The tracks are so different because they are so rough and can get technical. KL: You seem to be adapting well, what are you doing for training? HL: I run during the week and go out to Miami Motocross every chance I get. KL: Would you say you like riding trails or motocross more? HL: Trails for sure because it is a lot more interesting. You can have five different types of terrain on one loop so that keeps it fun and interesting. On the motocross track it is pretty much the same dirt the whole track. KL: Your older brother races as well. He has done very well racing Mini A and Junior A and this year he has been putting up solid results in B 250. Does it help riding with him? HL: It helps so much. Sometimes he will ride with me so I can see what he is doing and try to do the same in order to improve my riding. KL: What is one thing you would like to improve on with your riding? HL: I think everything could be improved but one thing that I really need to work on is gripping the bike correctly, I’ve been slacking on that lately and I really need to fix it. KL: You mentioned you were from south Florida, would you say you are better at the typical sandy, rough, fast tracks in south Florida or the more technical tracks like Gatorback or Brooksville? HL: I’d say I am better at technical tracks and I just have more fun riding them honestly. KL: So your favorite track is? HL: Brooksville for sure. No matter how I place I’ve always like riding there because it is such a fun trail. KL: Let’s shift gears now. Unfortunately the Women’s MX series is starting to die off and more motocrossers are trying off-road

events like Endurocross and the GNCC’s, which is making those series more popular for women. Have you thought about trying to race some of these events in order to get your name out there and receive some more support? HL: I’d love to do some GNCC’s later in the year but unfortunately I can’t do that many of them because of school. KL: School definitely comes first. Can you tell me your thoughts on Vicki Golden, female pro supercross rider, and what she is doing for the sport for women. HL: I think it’s awesome of her. She stepped up and is setting an example for so many female racers, it’s also really cool to watch her race against the boys and she has gained a ton of respect that’s for sure. KL: Besides the racing what is your favorite part about FTR? HL: The people. I love everyone in FTR especially my racing family and friends. With all these race cancellations I am really starting to miss everyone because they are my second family. Everybody in FTR whether they know each other or not helps out one way or another in any way they can and I think that is a truly amazing thing. KL: What advice would you give to a girl interested in racing? HL: I’d tell them to stay determined. Everybody has their ups and downs but eventually you will succeed and everything will be worth it. You just need to want it bad enough. KL: I could not agree more, whom would you like to thank? HL: I’d like to thank my family for all of the support they give me and also my mechanic Randy Rash for always fixing my bike and helping with anything that I need.

Sarasota Area Dirt Riders BERMONT HARESCRAMBLE

“Third times the charm.” That old idiom held especially true for the Sarasota Area Dirt Riders this season. After two tries at holding their event, getting rained out both times, SADRA was blessed with unusually perfect weather for May in Florida. The club put together an awesome course at brand new property for both the Pee Wee’s, Saturday bikes and Quads and also managed to find some room to give the Sunday riders mostly untouched trail to race on. Also on the schedule was a great fun run and a very entertaining pit bike race that will be talked about for years to come. Great job to everyone that worked hard to put this event together.

e didn’t get the turnout we had hoped for this 40th Annual Straight Arrow Enduro at Richloam but it was a huge success otherwise. CFTR is not overly concerned about profiting from our enduro so our disappointment with the turnout is because we think that everyone would have really enjoyed it. That and the fact that many volunteers worked hundreds of hours on the trail and it would have been nice for them to see more people enjoy their efforts. I think the 2 loop event was a welcome change for the workers and the riders but it is unknown if that will happen again. I am personally partial to the single loop event because it is a true test of man/women and machine plus it is tradition but feelings Eric Berard are mixed within the club. This year we had just 2 weekends besides the event weekend to cut and mark the entire trail so the two loop event made it possible. That constraint was due to conflicts with our rescheduled date and turkey hunting season in the forest so the exception was made. Congratulations to our Highpoint winner Ron Commo who managed to zero my section TWICE! I had guaranteed that would not happen but the trail proved no match for his skills. Ron later told me the event was, “hands down the best” of the FTR season and compared it to the Nationals that he runs in another series. I’m glad he enjoyed it and did so well but our goal was for the average rider to enjoy. The club wanted more people to leave with smiles on their faces and from the positive feedback it sounds like that was the case. Big thank you to Carol from the FTR Safety Team for being at the event with the Rhino. Fortunately she did not have to attend to any serious medical issues. Also thanks to Jason Ennis and Central Florida Power Sports for donating that shade, coolers, Thanks to ice, and water that were placed at the camp and the checks. Lastly thank you to all the volunteers because Pit Mom’s Race Pics without them none of this would have been possible.

for the great Photo’s

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS “Dirtbike Dad’s are just like all the other dad’s just a whole lot cooler!”

Happy Father’s Day to all of our

“Eddie Adams is an amazing father to Larry Adams. They are two peas in a pod. Eddie is so patient to teach Larry everything he can about the mechanics of repairing Larry’s dirt bike, keeping the equipment in good repair and ready to use for the next practice or race. Eddie makes Larry his first priority. He is gentle and kind, he is teaching him to be a good man. Eddie is also an amazing son to his Mother, and of course an amazing fiance to me. He is sweet and loving. He reminds me that it’s the little things that count.
