FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS THE PREZ

SAYS

I

am going to jump around a little in this article as there are several things I would like to touch on this month. As I looked through the April magazine I couldn’t help but smile about Jimmy Moore taking over our club meeting. You talk about having everyone’s attention; you could hear a pin drop when he was telling his story. Here’s a prime example of allowing our youth to get a sense of involvement and accomplishment while having a good time listening to the stories, this is also the beginning of keeping them interested in our sport. Speaking of involvement, the other picture of our boys was another example of letting our kids get some hands on experience and have some fun as both Aaron and Jesse were loading up the vehicles with stakes and posts. Those monster size gloves that Jesse had on were a dead giveaway that something big was happening. This was about four or five years ago that these memories were made and you just can’t get these times back. This is one of many benefits of belonging to a club as all of our clubs welcome new members young or old. So again, take your kids to the woods whether it is a ride day or just a family gathering, nothing better than getting to know each other and giving everyone a chance to be themselves. FTR continues to look at different things and ways to enhance our organization to benefit our membership and events. Items like one day memberships, live on line scoring, new Rhino to serve our membership at our events and adding more to our awards ceremony. This couldn’t happen if we didn’t have officers, committees and BOD members with positive attitudes working together as a team to get things accomplished.

As I look around at our events it has apparent that a little coaching is needed along the way to becoming a more knowledgeable and safe rider. One thing I really notice is a lot of our riders, mostly young, continue to let our visors drop down to a level that it impairs our vision. Impair my vision? How can that be you ask? Proper riding technique allows you to look way down the trail and to let your sub consequence remember what you looked at before you get there, therefore keeping ahead of the ground you are traveling on. With you visor tilted all the way down over your eyes, there’s no way to see what’s down the trail let along react in time to avoid a mishap. Even worse, combine the low visor with constantly looking down at the front wheel and it’s a recipe for disaster. Next time you or your child go riding, grab the visor and pull it all the way up. Look down the trail as you look for smooth lines to save energy and not over ride your motorcycle. Things like proper body position, bike prep and having a clear mind will allow you to ride with confidence while having fun. This is why we do this isn’t it! Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

CHAPLAIN’S

ear FTR Family, Can you believe we are back to racing again? I had just about forgotten how to do it. Great job Tallahassee Trail Riders at Gator Back. As far as your club goes, I was so pleased to see so much support for your organization. So many of your club members showed up and worked their hearts out. Thanks for being there and helping to make your event such a great success. Many of our FTR members have shared that they have been going through some challenging times. On April 23, in our family’s daily devotion, Billy Graham had the following thoughts to share regarding suffering. “It is an undeniable fact that usually those who have suffered most are best able to comfort others who are passing through suffering. They know what it is to suffer, and they understand more than others what a suffering person is experiencing—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They are able to empathize as well as sympathize

with the afflictions of others because of what they have experienced in their own lives Our suffering may be rough and hard to bear, but they teach us lessons that in turn equip and enable us to help others. Our goal should be to learn all we can from what we are called upon to endure, so that we in turn can comfort each other and edify one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11).” The next time you are going through a hard situation in your life, this is not the end. God has a plan for you to learn and grow through these difficulties. I am always available should you need to talk. I look forward to seeing you on the line! A QUICK NOTE FROM OUR TECH INSPECTORS

W

hy do I need numbers on my race vehicle? We get this question at tech inspection every so often, usually it is followed by, “I have a transponder!” Well, let me give you a few reasons why we require numbers on race vehicles. 1. Back up scoring needs to be able to identify riders. Background color and number. 2. EMS and safety team need to be able to identify injured riders. 3. Course workers need to be able to identify lost or missing riders. 4. Sweep crew needs to be able to identify broken down riders or the last rider on the sweep lap. 5. Course workers and Officials need to be able to identify riders in the event of rule infractions. 6. Spectators need to be able to cheer on their racers. These are just some of the important reasons for numbers on your race vehicle. Most Racers take pride in their ride and how it looks. As with everything, there are few that have torn and or missing

numbers on one or more of their number plates. I ask each racer to view their bike/ATV from a distance, 100 feet, 200 feet, can you see and read the back ground color, number and letter on your own vehicle? This exercise will help you understand some of the frustration back up scoring workers and course officials have when trying to identify race vehicles. Why there are specific rules and requirements on the size and style of numbers and letters. As always we look forward to seeing you roll thru tech inspection, Tech Crew.

here are many ways racers use to clean their chain and most of them involve removing the chain from the bike. That gets to be a drag after a while. I came across this cool tool that makes cleaning your chain a snap and it stays on your ride. Check out the Tirox 360° Motorcycle Chain Brush. Simply spray your chain with your favorite cleaner and thread the coiled chain brush onto your chain down by your guide. Holding the brush with one hand and turning your wheel with your other hand allows the heavy duty, chemical resistant bristles to do their magic. It scrubs your chain 360° around and does a pretty good job at it. Maybe I’m a sucker for unique gadgets but I’m sold on this one. It works on standard and o-ring chains in the 400-500 sizes. Check it our at www.tiroxproducts.com or get one from Rocky Mountain for $11.95. Well worth having in your tool box. Rob Mitchell Films, LLC has released the highly anticipated full-length offroad racing film, From The Other Side. Featuring a number of high profile off-road racers including FTR’s very own Jesse Ansley ! If you haven’t checked this our yet, what are you waiting for? What’s better than great music and awesome footage of dirt bikes in the woods. Download it now on iTunes, Vimeo, Google Play, XBox and Playstaion stores and, my choice, Amazon Instant Video.

For those MX racers out there missing the FTR series here the I4 MX season is underway.

Round 5- May 1 @Florida Tracks and Trails Round 7- May 22 @Mesa Park MX Round 8- June 5 @Florida Cycle Park Round 9- June 12 @Hardrock MX Round 10- June 26 @Tampa MX

May 28-29: The John Penton is one of the longest-running GNCCs around, and it’s held at Sunday Creek Raceway, a popular motocross track in Southern Ohio. You must plan for the weather at this event. It’s an awesome place to race, but it’s often either bone-dry and dusty or covered in sticky Ohio mud.

June 11-12: After its addition to the GNCC schedule in 2015, Tomahawk became an instant favorite for many riders. Our friends at the Western New York Off-Road Association have hosted races at the property for a number of years and it has even received honors as their “Best Hare Scramble of the Year” in 2012.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Getting to know

MORGAN BOWMAN

How long have you been riding?

I bought my first bike this summer, before that I’ve always just ridden pit bikes and the occasional Croom trip with my family.

What got you started?

I’ve wanted to race since I was little, because my brother and dad always raced, but was involved in other sports so I had to wait till college to get a bike and start racing.

Are you in a club?

I am currently on the board for Tallahassee Trail Riders, great group of riders and very thankful for all the help and tips they have given me in the past few months of joining them.

What classes do you ride in? Womens B

Bike type and number? YZ 125 number 9

What do you do to train mental and physically and do you have a favorite training partner?

Besides going to the gym and mountain biking, I go running every morning with the best training partner, my dog Bella. Mentally I am usually just so excited to not have to worry about school for a few days that I’m pumped for race day. I guess that counts as mental happiness?

Besides riding bikes tell us about your other passion, horses. Which one do you prefer if you could only do one?

Training horses and playing polo is defiantly a adrenaline junky sport just like bikes. Sometimes riding something without a mind of its own is a little simpler than trying to control a 2000 pound animal but I don’t think I would want to choose one over the other.

How did that all start?

I was riding horses before I could walk, spending as much time as I could from that day on out at the barn. My parents were always more into the two wheels where as my Aunt and grandma made sure I was on four legs.

How long have you been in competitive polo?

I have been playing polo for over 13 years and started teaching polo and training horses over the past few years out in Sheridan, Wyoming where I spend most of my summers.

What is your ultimate goal? I think mine would be playing with Prince William. lol.

I’ve recently reached my personal goal of being hired as a polo pro to play for teams in tournaments. Now my new goal is to eventually train and sell my own horses as a business. I have gotten the opportunity to play and work for many famous people and players over the years, but yet to play polo with Prince William.

Anybody you would like to thank for supporting your racing and polo?

My family and boyfriend are always there for me no matter Morgan Hill Photo

what sport I’m partaking in. My family is still a little iffy about me racing dirt bikes, but they try to make it to races and games regardless. Also the support from my FTR families is always amazing, especially the Klucinecs and Parsons who tend to adopt me on race weekends. We see you out there taking photos? Is that another passion? Photography has always been a passion and it is always a joy when I get to snap some photos for WFO. I’m hoping to get a nice camera some time soon to be able to keep taking action photography of bikes and horses.

Anything else you would like to share about your personal life? I bet there are more amazing talents and skills that we would find interesting?

Besides being out in the woods or at the barn you’ll catch me off shore reeling in some Mahi every chance I get. Always a blast getting to work on some large charter and private fishing boats off Islamorada and Bimini.

Are you in school? Do you work? What do you want to be?

I’m currently at Florida State University studying Environmental Science and working for a valet service ( yes girls can drive too). Well I want to be a superhero with super powers but besides that I would settle to be a working to fix the problems with the release of Lake Okeechobee.

Any sponsors you would like to thank?

Hmm sponsors.. I would like to thank everyone for the hand me downs and for all the help when I show up to races, also for all the pointers from everyone out on the trail and at the track.

Needless to say though, the River City Dirt Riders crew made the best of it and put on a great race. Thanks to Morgan Hill for braving the elements and getting some great shots.

GUNNER WILLIAMS GATORBACK RACE REPORT I was really nervous at the start but I got my first 65C holeshot that day so I felt better about the race. On my first lap when I came down the big hill on the MX track I got this feeling that my guts were about to fall out. Once I got down the hill I thought it was fun. My favorite part was the woods because it had a good flow and was fast. The tricky part was going down the rocky hills. I had to keep my clutch pulled in and stay on my back brakes. The SX track would have been fun if I had more time on it. During practice on the triple I tried to double it but I cased it really hard. I wish I could have talked more to the GoPro but I was too focused on racing. The track was in good condition but there were a few wet spots. I can’t wait to go back to Gatorback. It was awesome and the best track I have ever raced.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Preserving Our Hare Scramble Properties From Donny Richardson

o you know where we race? I am not talking about the physical address of a piece of land but rather what that piece of land is. It is the privately owned livelihood for a farmer or rancher. It is their business, their livelihood that puts food on their table and a roof over their head. Why is this important you ask? Well if we don’t have landowners willing to provide us land, we will have nowhere to race. Some may argue that we pay them for the use of the property so therefore we will always have land, however I will argue that point with the fact that if the benefits do not outweigh the risks, we won’t have any land. Why do I bring this up? In hopes of providing information to our membership to prevent any negatives in the eyes of our land owners. These are some of the things I learned when I had the chance to sit down and talk with a land owner recently. Many land owners will camp out or be present on race days to see how we conduct ourselves. Are we respecting their property • Are we leaving trash on the ground (there wasn’t any before we got there ) • Are we unnecessarily tearing up the pasture (with our trucks, bikes etc) • Dumping of our waste tanks when departing? (And I am not talking about gray water) • Are racers dumping fuels/oils/chemicals in their pasture • Are we having ground fires when asked not to • Kids playing on their farm equipment • Kids out in the woods well after dark (we should all be in the camping area unless authorized by the club to be out in the woods after dark) Are we respecting each other (Yes land owners read the forum) • How do we treat each other • Do we show the true meaning of sportsmanship • Are we watching our kids and our pets • Come 10 -11 pm are we respecting quiet time (you may not race in the morning but many do) Perception is everything……what we are doing vs what the landowner might see • 7 people on a golf cart made for 4 cruising around visiting friends – harmless right? What the landowner sees is potential for injury when the small kid hanging on the back falls off. • Under age pit riding….I was just going to….get some food, visit a friend over there, etcetc……well first it is against our very own FTR rules…..and then the landowner asking if it is against our rules why is it happening • After an event did the hosting club leave the property in the condition they said they would (On a very positive note this is happening all the time which makes for a very happy landowner) These are just a few examples to get everyone thinking. Remember a happy landowner will not only invite us back but will tell his friends how awesome FTR is. There is no such thing as too many land owners wanting to host a race. Because who benefits the most when that happens….WE do……. So please let ‘s all work together to keep our land owners happy.

New head tax rates to be effective with the 2016-2017 season. Motion passed by 14 to 1 vote. Allen Pearce presented four proposals for changes to the FTR Constitution and Rules. Proposal #1 A proposal to grant additional flexibility to the BOD and the Executive Committee in establishing a viable Sanction schedule in light of the no back-to-back H/S rule. Existing: Article XIV (Page 7) I. Competition Committees E. Sanctions 8. There must be (6) days between Hare Scrambles Sanction Dates, Rain Date and Actual Race Dates. The only exception to allow a backto-back event is if event is cancelled due to emergency weather conditions and is approved by the Executive Committee. Change To: 8. There must be at least (6) days between Hare Scrambles Sanction Dates, Rain Date and Actual Race Dates. The only exception to allow a back-to-back event is if event is cancelled due to emergency weather conditions and is approved by the Executive Committee. Exceptions may be granted under either of the following conditions: The Board of Directors approves the exception by a two thirds majority vote at the General FTR Sanction Meeting or the Executive Committee approves the exception due to an event that is cancelled as a result of weather conditions. Motion made, seconded and passed by 11 to 2 vote to approve proposal #1. Proposal #2 This proposal predominately applies to Enduros. If we are able to add an event to the schedule, there is usually insufficient time to get it approved by the Enduro Committee. Existing with change: Article XIV (Page 7) I. Competition Committees E. Sanctions 1. A General FTR Sanction Meeting will be held in the fourth quarter of each competition year. The Board of Directors will constitute the voting members at the General FTR Sanction Meeting. The exact time and place will be published on the official FTR website at least 30 days in advance of the meeting. There shall not be more than 12 Enduros, 15 Hare Scrambles and 14 Motocross events per year sanctioned by FTR. In-state Enduros shall have first priority of sanction dates. Each promoter will have the opportunity to have a date before any promoter is considered for a second event. Any series having less than the maximum allowed sanctions may add additional sanction dates up to the maximum allowed. The sanction dates must be approved by the appropriate competition committee Chairmanand the Executive Committee. This is to be for special cases only and a minimum two months’notice must be given to the general membership prior to the sanction date. Sanction fee must be submitted with the application. Motion made, and seconded to approve proposal #2. Motion failed to pass by 4 to 9 vote. Proposal #3 This proposal directs the H/S Chairman to issue a proposed calendar of dates that will comply with the rules and work out with the Safety Team. It should aid in arriving at a workable schedule. Add:zArticle XIV (Page 7) I. Competition Committees E. Sanctions 9. Prior to the Hare Scrambles Sanction Meeting, the Hare Scrambles Committee Chairman, after consulting with the Enduro Committee Chairman and the Rider Safety Coordinator, shall issue a tentative calendar of acceptable sanction dates for the ensuing competition year. Clubs are encouraged to consider said dates in making their Sanction requests. This tentative calendar is to be used only as a guide in arriving at the final Sanction schedule and does not prevent the Board of Directors from approving a schedule different from the tentative schedule.

Motion made, and seconded to approve proposal #3. Motion failed to pass by 2 to 12 vote. Proposal #4 We have no funding mechanism for maintaining the radio system. Since it is used almost exclusively by the Hare Scramble Series and the paid scorekeeper oversees maintenance of it, I propose the inclusion of its maintenance in the Scoring Fund. Add: Chapter III (Page 14) General Rules J. Fees Change paragraph 4 to read: Head Tax for Hare Scrambles: $4 per rider to be applied to year-end awards;$4 per rider to update, maintain and staff the electronic scoring and sign up equipment and the radio communication system; $1 per rider administrative fee; and $1 per rider for safety team equipment and supplies for a total of $10 per FTR rider. Enduro’s and Motocross - $4 per FTR rider to be applied to year-end awards and $1 per FTR rider administrative fee for a total. At in-state Enduro’s an additional fee of $1 per rider will be collected to update and maintain scoring equipment. Motion made, seconded and passed by 15 to 1 vote to approve proposal #4. William Toreki submitted three proposals for changes to the FTR Constitution and Rules. Proposal #1:Add to Rule book: Page 15 (Section L): 9. All race vehicles must pass official FTR inspection for rule compliance (Tech Inspection) prior to participating in any FTR event, including practice. Any rider racing a vehicle that has not passed Tech Inspection for the event will be subject to disqualification (DQ). Motion made, seconded and passed by 15 to 0 vote. Proposal #2:Motion made, seconded and passed by 12 to 2 vote to change Section III-C (Page 9) and add a new paragraph to Chapter II, Definitions as follows: Section III-C (Page 9) to read: C. Dues shall be calculated on a competition year basis for general membership, single-event membership, promoters and associates. Add a new definition (add to list in alphabetical spot) to Chapter II: Single-Event Membership - Designed for one person, this gives the right to enter a single FTR competition event (i.e. a single weekend). The Single-Event Membership is valid only on the actual days of the event. Single-Event members may collect trophies, but shall not earn season championship points. Single-Event members do not receive FTR membership cards, FTR forum privileges, voting privileges, magazine subscription, mailing updates, or reserved bike numbers. Single-Event members are otherwise subject to the same requirements and rules as General Members. There is no limit to how many Single-Event memberships a person can use in a single season. Proposal #3:Motion made, seconded and passed by 15 to 0 vote to change Article VIII (Page 4) by deleting the 4th paragraph related to the duties of the Geographical Area Directors. This deletes the requirement to work sign-up at all FTR sanctioned events in their area, to provide FTR application blanks, handle all FTR paperwork and collect all monies necessary to sign up new or renewal FTR members. Discussion regarding compliance with new AMA rule that applies new age restrictions on youth riding 250cc and 450cc motorcycles. Motion made, seconded and passed by 15 to 0 vote to appoint William Toreki to research the issue and report back to the Board of Directors. Discussion regarding need to replace Rhino used by Safety Team. It is reported that a replacement can be obtained for approximately $8000. Joe Carrasquillo volunteered to head up an effort to raise $7000 in contributions to fund the purchase. Motion made, seconded and passed by 14 to 0 vote to authorize purchase up to $8000. Greg Davis presented an outline of a Pro-Am series that he would like to be run in conjunction with 4 FTR hare scrambles events. Motion made, seconded and passed by a 15-0 vote requesting Greg to provide additional details regarding event rules and outside sponsorships, and to present these details for consideration at the next Board of Directors meeting. Motion made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 2:00PM. Submitted by Jack Terrell, FTR Secretary
