FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS A
s our series is rapidly moving into the holidays, I would like to reflect back on the Oct 26, 27 weekend as another learning experience. Besides all the regular stuff that goes into planning, organizing and implementing for the race weekend, behind the scenes is what really goes on and makes the weekend happen. As many other clubs can relate, securing new property is a major challenge as your phone just doesn’t ring off the hook inviting you to come look at new property. After the handshakes and contracts were signed, the real work starts. Beginning back in August and being one of the hottest months of the year is when the fun began, or should I say work. Aside from the mid to upper 90’s, there was scouting, mapping and GPS work to do. Getting a feel for the property and recognizing the boundaries was first priority as we covered all kinds of terrain and even found a huge hill/dike high enough that we could watch our friends over on the CFTR property sweat along with us as we all was probably thinking it’s too hot to be out here doing this. As each weekend went by we were starting get a feel of accomplishment as the design was starting take shape. Jump to October and things were getting real. The plan was Sunday would only use about a mile off the start of the Saturday course and head north up through some really nice off camber pine woods that would have the odometer reading about a mile. From the pines to a section we called 'Vietnam' would add up to about 2.5 miles. After cutting, grading and having the soil look like a groomed starting line at a motocross, it rained Thursday and make it pretty wet. Fingers crossed we hoped that Friday and Saturday it would dry up and all would be good. NOT! Sunday morning we were out there at 6AM rerouting, unfortunately we couldn’t use the pines as there was no way back except for the Vietnam section which was too wet. So a crew rerouted some on the Saturday course and we took out the 2.5 miles which really shortened the lap times. Being our first year on this property we learned a lot and look to solve the issue of having a way back from the
pines. We also will schedule a little better next year as we gave up our November 2nd date to allow the enduro to be the single event that weekend, hence the back to back races in October. Several things have already been solved as we have made changes for next year and we will go farther north into some deep woods. Many thanks to our friends over at the Sunrunners and OSDR clubs for coming up to help us out. Also thanks to our SADRA members, friends, sign up ladies and our trail boss, Carol Preston. Thanks also to all of you for leaving the grounds spotless and using our trash cans, it is much appreciated and please continue to show your support to our clubs throughout the rest of the season. Without forgetting our peewee’s, how about that peewee course designed by and run by the Moore family? What an awesome design that offered a true taste of what a hare scrambles is all about and then to decorate it for a Halloween party with all the lights, goblins and spooks to go along with it, Awesome job to all that helped put this together! Thank you for supporting us and look for bigger and better things next year. Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS B
When we get the call, sometimes we find ourselves facing “the wall”. We feel that our faith “isn’t working”. We have more questions than answers going up in our prayers. We don’t know where God is, what He is doing, how is He is going to get us out of this and, most of all, when will that happen. Facing the wall is not new. Look at Job.. in one week He lost his children, his possessions, his marriage, and his health. Even his best friends turned against him. (Job 1:13-22) Even Jesus faced “the wall”. He was facing crucifixion the next day. He was going to take the sins of the entire world (yours and mine included) on Himself to pay our price. He did not want to die. Remember while He is 100% God, he is also 100% human.
In Luke 22:42 He stated "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." God saw Him through. He could have run from the wall and gotten off the cross. He literally could have called 10,000 angels to free him. He did not. He loves us that much. For those of you who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, my heart breaks for you. You will face the wall alone. It can destroy you with bitterness, anger and hopelessness. Asking “why” will not get you an answer or a resolution. Put your trust in Jesus, even though at the time it doesn’t make sense. He will be there, guiding, lifting, sustaining, empowering and most of all loving you past the CALL and through your WALL. “The Good Race” joy service happens every Saturday night from 7:30 to 7:45 pm. We meet at the CMA tent on vendor’s row. Bring a chair and come join us! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

etty and I have named it “the wall”; that crisis that turns your world upside down. Divorce, job loss, death of a close friend or family member, a friend’s betrayal, a wayward child, car accident, loss of a dream. We have all been there. If you haven’t, you will.

ABOUT PETE ROSE: FTR VICE PRESIDENT NOMINEE
I
have been nominated for FTR Vice President. Here is a brief bio on myself. Married to Stacy for 35 years. Two Children. Two grandchildren. Started racing FTR in 2003 or 2004 - should have started sooner. Won Super Senior C Championship in 2007/2008 –
Promoted to B Have raced EVO class and competed in a few FTR Enduros. Currently racing quad Silver Master Class – working back into racing after a few knee surgeries, I do plan on racing a bike class this season as my conditioning improves. Area 11 BOD Representative - held position since 2015. Hare Scramble Associate Referee – held position since 2016. Hare Scramble Committee Quad Rider Representative. Member of FTR Hare Scramble Tech Inspection Team. Member of SADRA and OSDR. OSDR Club Vice President. I attend every Hare Scramble event and by being a member of the Tech Inspection Team, this allows me to understand the current FTR environment and gives access for FTR membership to voice concerns.
My viewpoint for change is that, the change must benefit the majority, not just one person or special group. I believe I am fair, do not make hurried decisions, I gather facts and weigh all the pros & cons before taking a position on a subject. Difficult choices must be made at times, not all will like or agree, but one must stand up for what is best for the future of FTR and its membership. So, I’m throwing my hat into the ring to serve as FTR’s Vice President. My commitment to FTR is long and strong. I doubt you’ll find many, if any, who question my dedication to this organization. My intentions are pure, and my actions demonstrate that I do not serve any special interest groups, but rather make decision I believe are in FTR’s best interests as whole. I will serve the organization well as Vice President and I would appreciate your vote. I make myself available, so contact me with any questions you may have. pwrracingktm@gmail.com 941-270-1189 Thanks for your vote Pete Rose

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS 8 TIPS OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
T
his month the Tech page is going to be a spot for some useful although not all that unheard of tips and advice from the top of my head. I'm not the most seasoned rider but I've been riding bikes of all kinds for many years and have picked the brains of some of the most unique and wise people to swing a leg over a seat. Some of these you might have heard of before but hopefully there will be at least one that will make you say "Why didn't I think of that?" So here it goes... 8 Tips of the top of my head. Tip 1: Goggle Prep! Hopefully everyone takes good care of their goggles as it is their job to take care of you and your eyes. Remove the lens and hand wash with a mild dish soap and water. Let them air dry, throwing them in the dryer is not a smart idea. Treat your lens with Rain-X plastic water repellent to help keep the water and mud to a minimum. Rain-X Anti-Fog applied to the inside of a lens helps them from fogging up in this stupid humidity that we all deal with in Florida.
TECH
Tip 2: Hydrate! This is a given. In case you haven't noticed, it's hot in Florida almost all the time. Most people underestimate the importance of hydrating well in advance of your race. Drinking a gallon of water a day, throughout the day not all at once, at least 3-4 days ahead of race weekend will give you the hydration needed in advance to help you compete. Remember, to stay properly hydrated don't wait until your thirsty! Tip 3: Clean and Lube your cables! If you've ever been in the pits at a pro race and snapped the throttle on a race bike it will be silky smooth and the clutch lever will be butter. Chances are the cables are cleaned and lubed before every weekend. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor before cleaning and lubing to avoid filling the slide with junk. Carefully inspect the inner wire for any broken strands, and replace the cable if it is worn or frayed. Clean with a contact cleaner and a cable-luber. Then use a lube designed specifically for cables. Have a stuck throttle or a heavy clutch will ruin your day over a 10 minute job that you should have done.
12 www.floridatrailriders.org
Tip 4: Clean your throttle tube! Since Tip 3 was about cables you might as well clean and inspect your throttle tube. Florida sand will do a number on throttle tubes and no matter how protected you think they are with bark busters and hand guards the gritty stuff will find its way in. Take the tube off and clean it your way, soap and water, parts washer or even just an air hose. Give your handle bar a light sanding to ensure it's smooth and replace the tube without using grease or oil. The tube and bar should be dry as not to attract contaminates. A clean throttle should snap open and closed without any hesitation or grit. Tip 5: Drain your gas! I learned this from someone that was obsessed with this and for good reason. When you've finished your last race or ride drain your float bowl (on a normally carbureted machine) Evaporating fuel will leave a residue leaning out the jetting and can also varnish and clog small passages pretty quickly. It doesn't take long to get the gas flowing again and it's worth the peace of mind that you have a clean carb running your ride. Tip 6: Where short socks when you can! If your comfortable in your boots you should where the thinnest and shortest socks that you can stand. Your feet are designed to help release heat and maintain a healthy body temperature. Wearing tall, thick socks prevents heat loss so to stay cool keep them thin and short, If your boots allow it. Tip 7: Heads up! This one is a given and it shouldn't even be a tip but I've seen a lot of racers looking down in front of their bike. Get your head up and enjoy the view. Look as far ahead as you can and where you want to go. This will give you confidence to handle what's coming your way. If you stare down at your front wheel you will not have time to properly respond. The more experienced you get the more comfortable you'll get at looking ahead and picking your lines. Tip 8: Last but not least...Have Fun! You've spent a lot of time and money to be a off-road motorcycle enthusiast you might as well enjoy it. Get out there and ride, do your best and feel sorry for the people in this world that don't know what it's like to ride a dirt bike.

All About ACMC- Mandie Butts
A
zalea City Motorcycle Club has been around since the early 70’s and we hope to continue many more years enjoying this great sport as well as the awesome riding friends and family we have made over the years. We really try to focus on the passion we all share for riding. Most of us ride year round trails, MX, Dual Sports and Enduros. We have groups that travel to other states, attending different riding events as well as local. We have many people who assist in making the trail(s) for our race and it shows! We have areas where our Enduro riders like to have some of the tighter trails, we have open and flowing areas as well as a small taste of MX to blend our groups preferences as best as possible. At the end of the day, this club exists because it rides and loves creating the same opportunities for the future generations and those who still share in it today regardless of age. ACMC typically meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month to have dinner, most of the time in Palatka but it changes pending who may attend that gathering. We discuss the club events, plan normal ride days and training, not limited to trails only, and mostly we chat! Mandie Butts (Myself) is the main contact for the Club, I may be reached at acmcoffroad@ gmail.com or onpoint120@gmail.com as well as my cell 904-563-6844. Contact is not limited to myself only concerning information about the club as we have several members who are active in the riding scene and handle affairs concerning ACMC, such as: Frank Swindell Swindellfrank@yahoo.com, Rob Butts rbutts120@gmail.com and Gary Wyatt.
I am the current President, Donny Wells is our Treasurer and we have a great group of members actively participating.
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
Riding Romania with Rocket Rick Cole
By Rick Cole
R
omania, Last Man Standing Enduro, September 2019; 5-days in the Transylvanian Mountains. I put together, every year or so, a ride around the World for selected riders to compete in and challenge themselves and the surroundings as it is always an adventure of a life time. It is more of an event of travel, experience, great food (which was amazing) to good friends & what was I thinking moments, to selling my dirt bike when I return home, dumbest sport ever, as it involves a minimum of 5 days of Hard Enduro Riding. This year Sibiu, Romania was selected, where the famous Romaniac’s Enduro is located. I had ridden there before and these guys from Lapland, Northern Finland are from the Arctic Circle and were in need of a vacation of punishment, which they got for sure. I had coordinated all the arrangements, flights, bikes, food accommodations, etc with friend & expert, prior Romaniacs coordinator, Sabin. I arrived on Saturday the 7th of September in Sibiu around 12 pm after 24 hours of travel, dead tired! The other’s were in route from Helsinki, Finland however, they were spending too much time in the lounge and missed their flight to Sibiu; Stuck in Munich, Germany, completely derailed, a bunch of unsupervised adults. Finally they arrived on Sunday at 1:30 am in NO condition to operate anything let alone ride. Monday was the worst, as we got fuel for the new Husqvarna’s 350’s & one new TE 300 injected bike for me. (great bikes, thanks Sabin.) This was the owner’s personal bike with works aftermarket suspension, what a difference. All bikes we ran had tubeless setup, something to consider.
18 www.floridatrailriders.org
Well then for the next 5 days we rode every day for 8 hours per day depending on the route as some sections were the steepest, rockiest, scariest 1,000 foot drop offs, with only 12 inches or less to place your 2 inch wheels on if that. Other sections had great river beds, creeks, rocks, logs, and inclines/routes there were impossible to climb on foot, let alone to ride … terribly awesome! It was great as long as you are not afraid of heights & big rocks with massive out crops and ledges. There was one day, the mountain was so steep, rocky and with tree roots it took all afternoon to reach the top but we survived in helping each other to the summit. There was only one with a dislocated shoulder... mine. I was able to re-locate it solely based upon fear. What a great event; another perfect Rocket Ricky Adventure with no one getting hurt, just our Pride and gained respect for the greatness of the Transylvanian Mountain Range & true professionalism of the people and experts that ride this stuff every day. We hit it with what we all had for five days. Truly Amazing. In Part “B” of this Enduro challenge, “2” of us, Ari & I, were supposed to ride in Serbia for a week at another Enduro event. All the plans were set and ok... No big deal. Well, between day 1 & day 5 during our time in Romania, with bets going on everyday, these people, the Laplanders, asked if I’d ride at the North Pole / Artic Circle. Well I lost my bet, so I’ll be there, prove me wrong 60 to 1. I had to fly to Helsinki then Rovaniemi, where actually Santa Claus lives, kid you not check for yourself, for a week and a night in Helsinki, to ride in these swamp infested areas, surely not right. A different riding all around with rounded rocks and deep swamps. One day we ended up at some Snowmobile Race in Sweden. Here you should never loose throttle control and touch and you had better know how to swim. I got a bit more than I bargained for... for sure. A special thanks to everyone for a great time and an adventure of a lifetime, that was for sure, as we made it, as history has now been written! Thank you to everyone who has played a role in this Adventure, to the guys in the chase vehicles, mechanics as well as to the organizers & staff. And a special thanks to the folks of FTR, Florida Trail Riders, here in Florida. What a great organization in supporting off-road motorcycle events, throughout... Thank you. As we say, a bad day of riding is better than a good day at work! Face your fears, live your dreams and special thanks, to Sabin, Ari, TiMo, Ville & Pekka. Till next time. Best Regards, Rick Cole

he Sarasota Area Dirt Riders debut some brand new property for the 2019 Great Pumpkin Hare Scramble. The club put in a lot of time and hard work into what turned out to be a fantastic weekend of racing and fun. The course was challenging and the dirt was perfect. Garrett Edmisten cruised his way again to an overall win followed closely by Travis Hullfish and Shawn Clark. It seems just finishing the race on Sunday was an accomplishment as the temps peaked into the 90 under a cloudless sky Brandon Frazier raced to his third win of the season on his #748 Yamaha taking the Quad overall by over four minutes. Brad Crofut aboard his Honda and Chris Kenny on his Yamaha rounded out the podium. Congrats to SADRA for putting on a great event. We look forward to coming back to Homeland again next season.

After the sun went down at the Great Pumpkin Hare Scramble the racers transformed into skeletons and ghouls, heroes and princesses, and, well, ..Joe dirt! The Halloween spirit was alive and well all through the pits and the Tick-R-Treating was abundant. What a great night to end a great day of Saturday racing...Florida Trail Riders style!
