FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS T

hat time again Before we get into the new season, I would like to take a few minutes to thank Darlene Riggs and all the volunteers that worked so very hard to make this year’s banquet a huge success. The amount of time, phone calls, trips to the convention center and coordinating is just unbelievable! This is always a huge task for any organization and without all our clubs involvement, members lending a hand and everyone that contributed ,it come not have happened. Reflecting back, we have already made some different choices for next year as planning as all ready started. Again ,a big THANK YOU to all of you for that in some way helped to make this event happen. As you read this, our season has started finally as most of us was struggling to get to this point . We got extremely luckily that Dorian spared our state as I for one do not want to go through anything like hurricane Charlie again as this would have been devastating beyond belief and made Charlie feel like a rain storm, we all got very lucky! As the FTR becomes more and more recognized throughout the off road community and with lots of meetings, phone calls, emails and meet and greets, we have established several major

benefits for our membership and riders. Contracts are in the signing stage as you read this for both H/S and Enduros for AMA FTR state championship off road series, Engine Ice has come on board with support with providing product for our holeshot awards, a major sponsor is just a signature away rider product and a major contribution to our banquet. Seat Concepts is also in the crosshairs as we are working on a program now for more involvement with FTR. We have a lot of exciting opportunities coming along this season, so get ready as the green flag is waving. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

Jesus addressed our friendship in John 15:14-15, “You are my friends if you do what I command you… I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” The great thing is our Friend, the One whose image we were created after, is just waiting for us to reach out. In Acts 16:31, the author wrote, “… what do I have to do to be saved, to really live?” They (Paul and Silas) said, “Put your entire trust in the Master Jesus. Then you’ll live as you were meant to live.” And just like that future Pee Wee rider (in about 4 years!) I met at the meeting, we become a new creature in Jesus. 2

Bench Racing With

TY LER REY NOLDS

Being a new comer to FTR and racing in the woods can be really challenging and nerve racking. Most track racers need some time to adjust to the fact that hare scrambles are unforgiving and leave very little room for error. Quad racer Tyler Reynolds jumped into the mix feet first, show some amazing determination and perseverance and had a spectacular first season. We slowed him down for a bit and got a recap of his first experience with Florida Trail Riders Quad racing.

When and where was your first race?

I started out the first race of the season not evening owning a bike or quad. I’ve always ridden quads, Never raced a whole series or competed intensely. I was a weekend warrior for Sunday practices at the local MX tracks and had no interest in the woods. I took the wife and baby to Bartow HS #1 to watch a friend, Mick Wormood, race and visit with his family. As me and the wife and baby sat on the golf cart watching starts and watching the racers come through I got intrigued. One the way home the wife drove and I found myself on Facebook market place making a deal on a 2013 Yamaha YFZ450R in the panhandle. The next weekend me and the wife drove up and bought it. I ordered the bare essentials, wheels, tires, exhaust, and handguards. I promised the wife this wouldn’t consume me and I’d just race a little here and there. Heck, I didn’t think I’d make the full 1.5 hr race anyhow but it looked fun. The next weekend Strickland Ranch HS #2 rolled around. I woke up at 4:30am Saturday morning and hit the road. Mick walked me through sign up, tech and the general outlook of how the day rolls I started in Quad C class.

total of 6 season wins along with winning the overall at the Indian Town race. It was an awesome season with some stiff competition battling Dylan Terrango, Nick Feritto, Codie Benton and the rest of the B line. I love it plain and simple. Win lose or draw the friendships I’ve gained and the fun I’ve had are priceless. I’m looking forward to the 2019/2020 season as it brings an even harder tougher set of challenges but that’s what makes this fun. My first season? I finished overall points winner for my class with an overall win at the Indian river race and a promotion to AA class.

What were your thoughts on the process for being a newcomer and not knowing anything? Any information you would suggest or change? Did anyone besides your friend help you out? I would suggest a post on the main page of a step by step for your first day at the track. Without my friend I would of been lost During practice I remember thinking no way I can do this for 1.5hr. 3:20 rolled around and we geared up and hit the line. I stopped in a porta john and puked because I was so nervous I couldn’t stand it. Then bam! Tttteeeeeennn seconds.. the horn.. and we’re off. I snagged the holeshot and never looked back. I won by a little over 2-3 minutes, I’m not sure, and after that I was hooked and hooked hard. Hog Waller comes around and I got a terrible start and worked hard all day and finally coming from 2 minutes back I took the lead on the last lap and gained a 2 minute lead. Now I’m even more hooked. I thought, all right I’ll go up a class. Bartow HS #3 was my first race in B class. I puke again but settled down. Snagged the holeshot and then gave it up to get bumped to 3rd. Got stuck on trees on the first lap I go to last. I battled and battled the next 3 laps working back up to 2nd place on Dylan Terrango’s bumper. We battled and battled but lack of skill on my part and Dylan’s fighting spirit I never could make the pass. As the season rolled on I was hooked and obsessed. Changed my diet starting riding every weekend and Wednesday nights at Tampa MX. Watching YouTube Go Pros looking for pointers then trying to adapt them to my riding. Then I had two DNF's. At the Punta Gorda race I suffered a battery failure on the 3rd lap. Mondon Hill I went out on lap three with a flat front tire I finally won a B class race. I proceeded to win 5 more for a

wanted to share this with the membership for those that have pull trailers, campers and toy haulers. Every summer I make time to do a check on the main components of my camper as these things take some abuse during our race season. Taking care of these things now, while their sitting is the time as you don’t want to be on the side of the road going to or worst yet, going home on a Sunday night with a break down. Brakes, Bearings, Wheel seals, Tires are the most common items to keep on top of with a yearly teardown to inspect, replace or service these vital parts that keep our overloaded rigs rolling, yes overloaded! We all do it and I am the worst at it with my loaded rig with truck weighing in right at 25,000lbs , so brakes, bearings and tires are top priority. I pull my stuff down every summer, inspect and repack bearings, inspect brakes/tires. Now I have added the leaf springs and shackles. Case in point I started hearing a squeaking sound at the last race while driving across the pasture and made a note of it to check farther into the moving parts around the axles. Well well; as I inspected the moving parts everything was worn out from the spring equalizers, shackles to the bushings. Most of our campers come with the minimal requirements which include standard suspension components so keeping an eye on this stuff is pretty important. All my pivot points had nylon bushings which were toast along with the shackle plates with no

12 www.floridatrailriders.org

grease fittings on the bolts, surprise! With two floor jacks and a bottle jack, I replaced everything with a heavy duty kit that included thicker shackle plates, brass bushings and the shackle bolts had grease fittings along with the spring equalizers that also had brass bushings. This was my experience and I’m sure if you got a rig with leaf springs, you got nylon bushings at all pivot points. Check these things out and keep on top of these items as this could absolutely ruin your weekend. One more tidbit, replace the shackle kit with one with brass bushings and zerk fittings and turn the grease fittings/bolts to the inside as you can grease them easily then, put the fitting to the outside you have to remove the tires to grease because you can’t get to them. Jack up the trailer by the frame; take the wheels off as you can now pry on the linkage or on the axles and check for any up and down movement. This is what I learned almost the hard way as I caught it in time, I hope it can help you also. Safe travels Randy Faul

he Florida Trail Riders annual awards banquet was held Saturday, August 3rd at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. It was a sit-down dinner attended by 768 people who spent the evening with their good friends enjoying, good food and recognizing the accomplishments of our FTR riders. We added something new to our event this year, after the riders received their awards, they were able to tape an individual interview which they will be able to share with their sponsors, friends and post on social media. I think they all enjoyed being able to make the tape not only to share with others but to have later to remember the recognition of their accomplishment for the 2018-2019 season. I would like to thank Don Learn for doing the interviews and Stephanie Crawford gathering the information we needed to be sure that the tapes could be sent out to our participates. Randy Faul presented the Presidents Awards to two young ladies, Kayla Cone and Emri Jacabs for their special participation within The Florida Trail Riders. The Sportsmanship Award went to a very deserving gentleman, Fernando Casagrande, and our Pit Mom award was given to a most deserving lady Tiffany Stephenson. A

s we celebrate the stars of FTR, let's not forget how giving back to FTR can happen in a myriad of ways. The time and effort it takes to prepare for an event of this size are incredibly time-consuming. It takes just as much energy to create a fun, and enjoyable ceremony as each club within FTR knows the time and effort it takes to put on a race event. This year Darlene Riggs and her team created an awesome event. I can't thank her and her team enough for their hard work and passion for making it a success. The desire to make the awards banquet a success was a choice they all made to give back to FTR. Giving back is the primary key to having successful events, and that's why I have always tried to give back in some way or another. For the past several years, I have collected the event t-shirts from both the hare scrambles and enduro events with the help of Jerry Curtis and Donny Richardson. These t-shirts were used in the creating of "The Quilts" that have been a raffle item hit each year. This year while I was at the GNCCs, I thought why not see if any of the pros would donate their jerseys for a good cause. The asking was the easy part! Every racer I approached was more than willing to give back! Walker Fowler & Cole Richardson literally gave me the jersey off their backs. Cole's was so muddy I had to stuff it in a ziplock baggie. When I took it out to clean it, I had a bucket of mud before I could wash it in the washing machine. The not so easy part was deciding how to display these jerseys. Once my helpers and I figured out our best plan of action we got to work. Tom framed them and my daughter, CristyRae, made the vinyl cutouts. I have enjoyed giving back to FTR, and I am glad to be apart of a thriving organization. If you were not able to attend this year's event, you missed out on a good one! As we begin the new season I am already finding ways to give back; I have three more jerseys to frame, Chris Borich, Hunter Hart, Craig DeLong that I will be giving to FTR so they can be raffled off soon. I would like for this letter to encourage you to give back to FTR. I believe we all can do our part to keep FTR successful. We each have strengths that can be used to grow our organization even if it's at the club level. -Ellen Fleming

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Thank you to Dennis and Lee Bacci for their hard work and gracious donations of brand new Leatt protective gear to some lucky FTR youth racers. For the second year in a row, the Wheeling For Others Matt Batchie Foundation raised funds through various events so they can give back and make sure the youth have the proper safety gear, all of this in honor of FTR Racer Matt Bacci. We miss you Matt and your legacy will go on through your foundation.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Sleep Will Make You Leaner and Faster – Here is the Proof!

T

Coach Robb

o those of you out there struggling with fatigue, weight loss, anxiety, sleep disorders and/or performance plateaus, consider sleeping more to allow your body to recover and rebuilt naturally. There are no short cuts. High intensity and high volume will destroy you unless you have the time to sleep and eat enough to ABSORB what you do –

plain and simple. Sleep Project Overview For the last 20+ years, I have asked all my clients to train with a heart rate monitor to keep them from training too hard on their easy days leaving them fresh for their high quality days.

This methodology has been challenged by many coaches and athletes for many reasons: “grey zone”, “wattage”, “perceived exertion”, etc. I have personally watched clients leave to go to a another program with more volume, more intensity, calorie restriction, etc. only to become injured (sometimes career ending), have a performance regression and/or become exhausted mentally and physically resulting in creams, injections or oral supplementation to turn their “symptoms” around. Sad but true. In addition to having my clients train with a heart rate monitor I have required all my clients to maintain a Body Analysis spreadsheet to evaluate their body’s feedback to training volume, intensity and frequency along with ensuring that they are consuming enough quality calories and fluids to support their training loads and life’s other stress sources (work, family, etc.). To prove my theory I conducted a sleep study over an eight month period where I asked 10 clients to wear their Garmin strapless heart monitor for every workout as well as when they sleep. With the permission of one of these clients, I have documented her sleep data averages and performance results below.

ongratulations to all of the FTR members that made the trek to South Carolina to race in the 66th running of the Little Brown Jug Enduro. The LBJ Enduro has become a time honored tradition of racing in the South and the Florida Trail Riders should be honored to have it as part of our schedule. A special nod goes out to the following members that not only finished but won their classes: A200 racer Jacob Berard, Vet A 35+ Racer David Settle, Class of 65 Racer CBob House, Schoolboy 12-16 racer Mattias Peroni, and Evo racer Jerry Curtis. Thanks to the Greenville Enduro Riders for hosting our members and putting on a great event every year.

Eric and Jacob Berard showing off their hardware.

Did you know that to win the Little Brown Jug Trophy you have to be the overall winner of the race. The winner of the trophy has to bring it back the next year. This makes this one of the most special trophies in all off-road racing. This year the overall was won by South Carolina's Grant Baylor. To retire the Brown Jug a rider must be the overall winner three years in a row. Few racers have retired the Brown Jug. One notable racer is friend of the Florida Trail Riders, Randy Hawkins. Randy has retired the Little Brown Jug twice.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS N 2019-20 FTR Enduro Season O I T TEN

AT

The new season is rapidly approaching and the Enduro Series has made several changes within the series to help bring new racers to the events and to make the events fun for everyone. The Sprint Enduro Format will be added to the Enduro series to add some variety to our off road racing. This will be very similar to the AMA Sprint Series rules but with modifications to make it FTR friendly. Clubs can use smaller tracts of land, run test sections multiple times, and use total time scoring. The test sections also have limited maximum distance and reset or ‘rest’ time between test. This also simplifies Enduro set up for clubs and makes it easier to provide the Enduro experience for racers. Another change is the addition of the Schoolboy Class. Riders 12-16yrs old can compete on 250 or smaller machines in this class. Class divisions may be added as this class grows in size and gets established. Our minimum race length has been shorted to 50 total miles from 60 miles to help clubs that are dealing with land issues host FTR races. Sprint Enduro format races will have 40 race or test miles as the minimum limit. C- Rider cut off and the realignment of the Class of 66 to 65 are two other changes. The C-Rider cut off will help take some of the stress off our introductory riders and will assist in having them complete the entire race. Realignment of the Class of 66 to 65 helps align this class with the National and other series within our region. Last but not least, we have two committee members (Don Chriss & Jimmy Pitts) who have volunteered to help clubs prior to race weekend check and double check the course layout and time schedules to make sure they are obtainable by riders of all skill level. This will help add some consistency to race day and also aid in making sure all skill levels enjoy the event. The Enduro Committee has worked hard on changes that will make our events more enjoyable by all riders but still maintain the true Enduro challenge and test rider skill. I hope you are able to try an event this season and if you have any questions about the series, you can reach out to any of the rider reps or myself. Thanks and hope to see you at the Races!
