he dog days of summer is here and with it comes the heat, humidity and just all round being muggy. That was the weather of the day on June 24 when a huge group of off road enthusiasts gathered at the Croom riding area to erect a border fence to enclose their new proposed technical riding area. Along with an MX practice area, there will be other opportunities to practice our off road skills in a designated area free from other riding and riders in the forest. As always, our group of off road supporters came together and fenced in about 8-10 acres in one day! From drilling the holes and setting the posts to constructing the corner posts and bracing, the fence was finished that afternoon. Along with lunch and some down time for bench racing, some swag was given out along with some very nice FTR hats from Eastcoast Screen Printing on a last minute request. A Big Thank You to our Forest Rangers, Cary Hunt for organizing the effort, Suncoast and Sadra members and FTR members along with John Hardiman and his Team. Everyone worked their butts off and gave up

their Saturday to make this happen. The forest dept can now move forward with the next grant to finish the project which will provide us with another opportunity to ride something different at Croom. Also on the horizon is very good possibility of about 300 more acres becoming available at the Bone Valley OHV Park in Bartow. They are wanting to create some single track trails along with a possible MX track. The wheels are turning slowly but they are turning with good intentions. Our banquet is here and next month we start our season with the first enduro followed by two H.S. in Sept. and then it’s on. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

ear FTR Family, It has been 10 months since I last wrote to you. Wow! Time has flown by. We were able to attend 4 events this year (Saturday only). Nevertheless, each time was a treat. It looks like we will not be able to make it to the banquet this year. I work one weekend during the summer and it happens to fall on the weekend of the banquet. Bummer. I wanted to take a few moments to share some thoughts. Many of you are probably aware that Matthew Batchie (#52 / Junior B Rider) unexpectedly passed away back in May due to the injuries he sustained when he was hit by a vehicle as he was crossing the road. On behalf of the family, I want to say thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness you showed to Matthew’s family (Dennis, his father; Leigh, his mother; and Andrew, his brother). When Dennis requested that we do a private service for the family because he did not think the church could hold everyone, he was right. Dennis and Leigh’s relatives flew and drove in from all across the country to support them. I was in awe. I have done many funerals but the love and compassion in that room was overwhelming. I wish all families, in their time of need, were that supportive. Later that evening we held a service on the beach that was open to the public. Hundreds attended this event. There was even a television crew there doing interviews. What was more amazing, a lot of the ideas for that evening’s event (as well as most all of the footwork) came from 14, 15, and 16 year old kids; under some great supervising provided by Dorothy Dekmar (thank you Dorothy!). After I briefly spoke, numerous young people shared their memories and heart-felt condolences to Dennis, Leigh, and Andrew. Again, I was in awe of the volume of people and the love shown for the Batchie Family. Many in the FTR Family traveled across the state to support their friends in their time of need. It was an incredible turn out. I was very proud of FTR. You should be too. What we do in FTR is for fun and fellowship. Yes, I know we have a tendency to take things seriously. We are competitive by nature. But we should never forget that come Monday morning, we all have to go back to school or work. I will let you in on a little secret, 99.9 % of us are not financially supported by our weekend hobby. Let me make a suggestion, regardless of your age or what you ride, when you go to the line ride your own race as hard as you can. Once your 1.5 to 2 hours are up, step

away and enjoy that “brief ” time you have with your family and friends. Never forget that we are constantly making memories. Be sure they are good ones! In one of the many conversations Dennis and I shared, he was so glad of the time he spent with his son Matthew at the FTR events. I can relate. Both of my boys have grown up there. I would not trade them for anything. But, nothing lasts forever does it. Unfortunately, any of us, at any time, can deceive ourselves into becoming self-centered. Each of us must be diligent in not losing focus on what is important in this life. You want to know the secret to life? Many have searched for it. Books have been written to try and explain it. Movies have been produced in an attempt to display it. But most have never found it, much less experience it. I’m gonna tell you the secret to life. First, everyone us of (me and you) must have a personal relationship with God. Second, if you have a family, love them and spend time with them every day. Third, treat everyone with respect and consideration. There it is. Simple concepts, but not easily implemented or maintained. It must be done in that order and it must be done consistently. Will you fail to keep your commitment to one of the three (or all three)? Yes. However, when you do, ask for forgiveness and go back to being consistent with your commitment. In closing, since I have spent time discussing the family, let me leave you with a short passage from the Bible dealing with children. It is found in Psalms 127:3-5. It goes like this: Don’t you see that children are GOD’s best gift? the fruit of the womb, His generous legacy? Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents (and may I add, Grandparents!), with your quivers full of children! May we all continually give thanks for what, or to whom, God sends our way! Until then, I look forward to the next time “I’ll see you on the line.” Your friend, Andy Dickson FTR Chaplain Master A #121

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

DOODLE RIDGE HARE SCRAMBLE

Dust, heat and tight single track scrub, what more could you ask for from a May hare scramble in the South. The Florida Trail Riders welcomed the newest club to the race schedule at the L-Cross Extreme MX Track in Okeechobee. The BIG O TRAIL RIDERS grabbed a rain date and did an awesome job bringing the 2016-2017 race season to a close. Despite ninety degree temps the racers turned out for one more go before heading out to the awards expo and vacations. Let's give BIG O a BIG round of applause for pulling it off. We all look forward to see what you can do next season.
