s I write this our season is almost complete with this month being our final two events. It’s been a long season with some schedule changes along the way and a new club coming on board to help secure a fourteen race series. With our race season at a close, our biggest event is just around the corner with our annual awards ceremony. If you haven’t secured your room yet you best do it now as there is a Daytona Truck Meet going on the same weekend so rooms will be gone before you know it, Don’t wait! The rates are limited to the FTR and when our block is filled, that’s it. This year Lisa and Lacey Nordle have graciously volunteered to head up these festivities. With all the planning and activities it takes to provide a fun filled weekend for all, there has to be some help provided as these two ladies cannot do it by themselves. We need our FTR membership to help us with ideas, support in set up, tasks during the event and some tear down. You don’t have to give up your entire weekend but just a few hours during the
day. There will be information coming out in the magazine and on the forum with contacts for anyone wanting to be involved. This is a huge undertaking and requires team work and helping hands for a successful event. Please consider giving the ladies a call @352-457-5030 As our season comes to a close, I would like to Thank All the Vendors for their continued support and being part of our family by providing parts, service and advice to our riders. Also I would like to give a big Thank You to Palmetto Motorsports, WMR and Cycle Sports for the pop up canopy’s that was donated to FTR. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

TR's Kristofer Flieger spent some time going fast on the pavement last month at the Lucas Oil School of Racing at the Palm Beach International Raceway in Palm Beach, Fl. " They are a new school with new cars! We got about 5 hours of on track time with about equal time in classroom. They gave us great feedback after each session and you could really see the tips work on the track."he said. Kristofer got to learn the ins and outs of going fast from pro kart racers and champions and American LeMans series drivers as well." I graduated top of my class out of 9 other drivers. My neighbor Gary works for IMSA teams and is trying to get me a car to race and further my career racing cars. We are trying to get cars for either Mazda spec class or Formula Ford class." Sounds like someone has been bitten by another racing bug!
Steve Le Roux's got talent ! ear FTR, I have to share this with you, it's something my mom picked up on in South Africa. I sent her the picture of the cover and she sent me back a picture of my final art piece I did senior year high school. Her comment was; "coincidence?" I was pretty blown away. And needless to say the young man who drew that picture 10 years ago feels like he is living his dreams!!

Happy 37th Anniversary to Frank and Kim Campbell. Here wishing you many more. The two of you haven't changed a bit. Dear FTR I'm very happy to read that the state of my birth still lives up to its promises. My Dad went to high school with the Knowles brothers -- and all of us migrated up the interstate from St. Petersburg. I fondly remember riding the various Croom enduro courses marked off with those beautiful fluorescent FTR cards. Although we didn't abut the park, like Rex and Lynn Knowles (or the Keylons) did, our farm was close enough where we only had one pasture gate to open to gain access to the "promised land" (Croom). It was quite a thing witnessing the European invasion that took place in Croom back in the early 70s. Bultacos, Maicos, Huskies, Montesas, Ossas ... and the smell of all that burned Bel-Ray in the air ... and I can still picture all of the mechanical works of art that I got to see operate over the years ... Pentons, Can-Ams and the first automatic dirt bike I ever saw: the Rokon. In fact, I watched Gene Canham, the second FTR enduro champion and president, practice on his Rokon auto through a fence that separated his land from ours. The Knowles, Canhams, Tichenors, Martins and Bill West were all my Dad's clients and friends ... and having grown up near Brooksville, I went to school with Kenny Keylon (the younger), so there's another connection to past FTR champions. So I guess you could say that I got to see a lot of the central Florida motorcycle culture over the years. Unfortunately, I don't live in Florida any longer -but most of my family does -- so it's still home to me. Southern as the sawgrass, Bill in the Berkshires -I got this nice e-mail from a original FTR member. Does
anyone recognize the name?

e’ve all seen pit boards with the word “breathe” written on them as racers pass by during an event. It seems like a simple cue to give a rider and one might even wonder if it is necessary. The fact is, they are still breathing. They wouldn’t be riding if they weren’t and oxygen of course is necessary fuel source for the body. In order of necessity, we need oxygen, water, and food. But we all breathe right? Sure we do, but by paying close attention to your breathing, you can optimize your racing performance and your recovery. Breathing practices are not new. In fact, they’ve been around for centuries and can take on many different forms and techniques. One of the reasons that yoga is so effective is the focus on the breathing patterns. By taking some time to practice proper breathing techniques, you can learn to utilize more lung capacity, stimulate the nervous system, and control your heart rate. There are other benefits to having a dedicated breathing practice, but these alone are worth going into more detail on the topic. Many people are chest breathers and when they inhale, the chest and shoulders will move with breath. This can become more pronounced during an extreme metabolic event, or perhaps a race day scenario. This is important for a few reasons, and can greatly impact your riding performance and positioning on the motorcycle. Imagine while in a seated position on the bike, you take a big chest breath. Besides only receiving a portion of the oxygen you could be getting, your chest expands, the shoulder rotate posteriorly (backwards) and your pelvis might also rotate a little anteriorly (forward). Compounded over several hours, you could be hemorrhaging energy and performance. What is a better way? The diaphragm is the key. Your diaphragm is responsible for drawing air into the lungs and does so by contracting during the respiratory cycle. We can increase the functionality of this movement by placing more focus on diaphragmatic breathing. Imagine filling up the lungs from bottom of your stomach to the top of your collar bone. The stomach will expand first and the chest will expand second. How can you practice breathing through your diaphragm? Perform all of your breathing through the nose. For most people, the nose breathing technique will immediately translate into better diaphragmatic breathing performance. Once you’ve practice this and get comfortable, try it during your next metabolic training session, run, or cycling session. Another way to practice using the diaphragm is by using an implement called the Elevation Training Mask. This mask is designed to simulate breathing at altitude by restricting the flow of air through the mask. There are few reasons while the mask doesn’t simulate high altitude training like the fact that the concentration of oxygen in the air is not altered. The necessity of altitude training can be debated, but that’s not really why this tool is useful anyway. The restriction of air flow through the mask forces the diaphragm to contract and requires more effort to draw in air. Remember this is breathing practice, not so much training. The resulting improvements I’ve seen while using this mask for breathing practice have been pretty remarkable. Is this mask 100% essential? No, not in the least! It’s a tool and you can focus on drawing your air in slow using the diaphragm on your own. One thing to note about the Training Mask from this strength coach’s point of view is that it is not really a good idea to actually train while using the mask. It won’t hurt you, but it can greatly decrease your output which can be seen as counterproductive.
COACHE'S CORNER 16
Just Breathe ! One way that you can utilize the mask during training is to use it during your recovery phase of interval training. Challenging your breathing recovery seems to have a great impact on performance. So by now I hope you are ready to get started practicing your breathing. How do you do that? There are many ways, and the only right way is to begin focusing on your breath. Here are a few things that I’ve found useful in staying focused and get the most out of my practice. TheWim Hof Method (there are a lot resources out there and this is by no means the definitive method, just the basics…dig in to Wim’s website for more!)
Mark Divine’s Box Breathing. For more info, visit unbeatablemind. com, sealfit.com, or search YouTube for instructional videos.
A protocol from Brian Mackenzie’s of Power Speed Endurnace, XPT Life, and CrossFit Endurance. This sequence is generally written as 1-4-2 which means that you can chose the length of the inhale which determines the others. Play with a few to get started. I used 4 seconds below as an example.
Whichever method you choose to try, I believe it is in your best interest to pay close attention to your breath practice. Unlike the physical limitations of working out, breath training can be done much more frequently and has a wide array of health and psychological benefits. Have fun with your practice and set aside 10-15 minutes of warm up time to focus on breathing. If you feel out of breath during a workout, stop and settle into to a rhythm and challenge yourself to quickly return to a baseline breathing pattern. Learning how to breathe more efficiently can improve your performance by decreasing the amount of energy wasted through poor mechanics and position and also increasing the available oxygen to the muscles. Good luck and have fun with this one! As always, log on to fit-moto.com or grenadefitness.com for more details and FREE training programs! Get Better, Coach
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Getting To Know
BOBBY MUNRO
Name: Bobby Munro Age: 14 Class: Mini A Bike Number: 585 Bike type: KX85 Been racing since you were how old?: 6 First bike was a 2006 CRF50 Current bike is a 2015 KX85 Bike number? Why? When I was racing BMX, 585 was the first number I was assigned when I was 3, and it stuck. What got you into racing? I raced BMX for several years but lost interest. I started riding MX and raced a few races on my CFR 50 and KX 65. I got into FTR when a kid at a motocross track. Josh Mageloff told me about FTR and I decided to start racing. I raced in 65C and was typically middle of the pack. I was promoted every season and worked my way up to Mini A last year. How have your race seasons been? My top championship placement was 4th, last year in Mini A. I'll be getting a C200 Enduro Jacket this year. Favorite Track and why? One of my favorite Hare Scramble tracks would probably be Bartow 2, or Gatorback. I like the elevation that is hard to find in Florida. Bartow 1 is my club’s race, and I always love working to get the race ready. Woods, MX, Enduro preference? I prefer Hare Scrambles, but I have been doing some enduros lately, and they are a lot of fun (Except for the Alligator). I train with Kyle Goerke at his MX track. He has helped me with my riding style and speed. I do a few MX races each year but love the woods. I entered a Trials competition this year and had a blast doing that. I won the intermediate class and want to do more next year. Pretty much filling up all my weekends riding.
Any GNCC? I’d like to race a few GNCCs next year, but we’ll see how things go. What is your pet peeve during a race? Cypress stumps at enduro's. If you could improve one thing about FTR what would it be? More Pit bike races! What club are you in? CFTR, I enjoy being part of a club and preparing the tracks for races. Everyone should join a club so they know what goes into putting on a race, plus you meet lots of people that enjoy racing and riding. It is a lot of work but it is rewarding after the race it over. I saw your last race at the Bad Bass in Okeechobee. It is great to watch the competitiveness you and Blake have. Makes for a good day. Really says a lot about your parents and your racing styles when you both come through the checkers and fist bump and talk about your race. I love to compete and race hard. One of the best parts of FTR is the people and the fun we have after the races. That was your last HS this season, you were leading my how many points? I had a pretty comfortable lead of 43 points before the drops. Hard to see it slip away, but I will be back soon. What was your race finishes? How many firsts? I won 4 races and never fell off the podium, so I have had a pretty smooth year up till now. After the HS you went on to do the Alligator enduro. Was that your first enduro? I had done 3 enduro's before that, but this race was a national, so about 600 riders showed up, more than usual for an enduro. They help me a lot with Hare Scrambles with the endurance and a full day of seat time. Describe the day going into the race? I was just coming of a cold and fever going into the race, but I felt pretty good. But when I got on the track it caught up to me and I wasn’t riding well at all. Describe your crash? I hit a root which shot me out toward a 3 foot tall stump, which pinned my leg in between the stump and the bike. I knew immediately I broke my leg. The medical team was there within 15 minutes, and they took me back to camp where the ambulance was waiting. The dirt road out was too long, so they decided I needed to be airlifted. I got in the helicopter to go to Halifax, where I later got surgery on my femur. I want to thank Carol Preston and the entire medical team that was at my side
soon after I crashed. I would also like to thank Bennett Douglas, the rider who stopped to help me. He came all the way from Mississippi to race the Alligator, and gave up his race to make sure I was all right. Describe your Moms reaction? She wasn’t happy to know that I was getting in a helicopter when my Dad called, so I think she was worried. She handled it very well. Describe your recovery? I should be cleared to ride again by the end of May, but we will see how physical therapy goes. Are you out for the rest of the season? I will be back at the last race. When do you get to start practicing again? I’m riding my mountain bike a lot to get back in shape, but I won’t be practicing on a dirt bike until the end of May. How will you finish out the season? Second. What did you learn from this curve in your plan? I learned that God may have other plans for me, even if it’s not what I planned at all. Can’t control everything but have to make the best of it. I really appreciated all the people within FTR who checked in on me and prayed for me. It is an awesome group of people. Goals for the summer and next season? Headed to Woodward Camp with the Berard’s for some BMX and Dirt Jumping in June. I will be riding as much as I can this summer, and I’d like to win some Junior A races next season. Does it ever cross your mind that you are the future of FTR and how the little kids look up to you or how someday you and Blake could be the next Matt Boni and Garrett Edmisten battling it out on the track? I hope to make it to AA sometime, and I know that there are a lot of other fast kids that I will be racing against for years to come. It is cool that kids on 65s and 50s look up to me like I look up to today’s AA riders. When you are leading a race what runs through your mind? Don’t fall down, and keep charging! Don’t get sloppy, keep good riding form. When you are behind what do you do to gain the lead back? I go really fast. Advice for young riders? If you have good technique and form on the bike, then speed is sure to come. Work on the fundamentals and body position. Lots of seat time. What is your pre race routine? Do you put the same boot on before the other boot. Eat or drink special on race weeks? Before a race, I don’t have much of a routine other than eating some food and resting. During the week coming up to a race, I try to eat healthy and avoid junk food. After a race, I usually get an Ice Cream or funnel cake from Trackside Treats. What is your favorite thing to do at the track when you are not racing? Hang out with friends, watch the other races, or play Dodgeball in our camp. Who do you hang out with? Kent Michaels, Evan and Jacob Berard, Alli and Tyler Lamb, and Caleb Clingan.
What grade are you in? Eighth grade. What school do you go to? Glenridge Middle School. What do your classmates think about your racing? I am the only dirt bike racer at my school, so most don’t really understand racing or why I am always racing on the weekends. After breaking my leg, most were wondering why I want to keep racing What would you like to see in
the FTR magazine? I always enjoy reading the FTR magazine, and I think it is awesome that FTR has one. I especially like seeing the pictures from the races. Also an interview with Brandon Misciagno would be great. Would you like to ever submit an interview or race recaps? I’d love to. Might get some extra credit with your teacher. How important are the people to you that are out there cheering you on? I appreciate the support from all of them, and it’s encouraging to know that there are people behind me. Does it make you nervous, get you going again? It motivates me to go faster. Do you hear them yelling at you? Always. Anyone you would like to thank? I’d like to thank my Mom, Dad, and my sister Leah,Goerke MX School, Mods by MRW, The Berards, Michaels, Gawlers, Brandon, Pier, CFPS, CFTR, and Donald Trump for Making America Great Again! Anything you want people to know? When I’m not racing or riding. I love to mountain bike, hunt, camp, fish, shoot, ride BMX and spend time with my family and friends. Thanks Bobby. I hope you are healing fast!!
