Letters to FTR Giving some Hog Waller Love! Dear FTR, I have been racing with FTR on and off for 22 years, the ACMC hare scramble at Hog Waller has been the best race thus far! I want to give a big shout out to the land owner for allowing us the opportunity to race at such a great place and also ACMC for putting this awesome race on. The track and weather were perfect for the Sunday AM race, there was a great variation of mud, sugar sand, long sweeping straights, and tight rutted trails. The easy hard section was my favorite by far...I decided before the race it was smarter to go the easy section and leave it to me on the first lap to take a soil sample in the easy section! That allowed me the chance to have a great battle with Alyssa Mieszczenski on the first lap! After that I hit the hard section and had a blast! It was so much fun I was prepared to do a 5th lap! Cant wait to race here next year! Thanks for a great weekend! Kelsey ODonnell

Hello FTR, Thanks for a great HS #3 at Hog Waller. I would like to give you a recap of my exciting 2 o’clock Saturday Junior B race. I got a great start and pulled the hole shot and was running a good and smooth race. At about the 2nd mile mark, a bike in my class passed me. I was behind him for about a minute and a half and then he went the wrong way. Out of nowhere a bike came out of the woods, and smash, he ran right into me. (It was the kid that passed me) He caused myself and a few others behind me to all crash!!! We all got back up and we were running a good race. Somewhere in the race I picked up a stick that happened to go right through my radiator hose and the bike was running very hot. I got back up to 4th or 5th place and just before the finish line the 277 in my class and I were bar to bar. I was on the inside and he was on the outside when I got a little too inside and I slammed into a pole and flipped over the handlebars. I was so close to the finish that I hurried up got back on my bike and by then the piercing stick had done its damage; my bike wouldn’t start. I was so close to the finish! I told myself I am not going down this way in my first Junior B race. So I mustered up the energy and I started pushing. I pushed my bike for what seemed like for ever. My Dad and our friend came to help push until I got close to the finish then I pushed the rest of the way. I lost 4 spots on the push, so I ended up in a respectable 8th out of 15 riders. It sure was a heck of a day full of adventure. I would like to end saying thank you to all of the FTR medical staff, referees, and scorers. Most of all the clubs that put on great races for all of us to enjoy. I am a member of Daytona Dirt Riders, so we know how much work and effort it takes to put a race on. So from my family to yours, thank you for creating such a great environment for me to grow up in!!!! Gavin Flannigan Junior B

We want to hear from you . send your letters and race reports to ftrmagazine@dekmar3d.com Its a great way to share your excitement and appreciation for the sport you love.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS 2016-2017 HARE SCRAMBLE #2

ound two of the Florida Trail Riders Hare Scrambles series moved to the beautiful property of the Central Florida Trail Riders in Bartow. The Peace River Hare Scramble had some new events this year including an all day fun run and the first ever “Bartow Bar Dragger” grass turn track. The weekend was hot and humid, nothing FTR racers aren’t used to, and the dust was abundant. Thanks to CFTR for putting on another awesome event. The bar has been raised already for the rest of the season.

ne of the most neglected pieces of a rider’s training program is mobility work. It’s always fun to go riding, lift weights; sometimes it can even be fun to do aerobic training. However, stretching and performing mobility exercises are often neglected from a rider’s program. I’m here to testify that performing mobility exercises and staying on top of your flexibility will pay off huge in terms Tyler Coody MS, CSCS of performance and injury prevention. To begin with, let’s define two very common words that sometimes get a little confused. Mobility is and object’s (in this case a joint’s) ability to move freely without restriction. Stability on the other hand is the ability of a joint to resist movement. When racing for long periods of time, we often spend most of our time hunting for stability by bracing, squeezing the knees into the sides of the gas tank, or even clenching our jaw. But problems arise when we need mobility, and we need it fast! Imagine a section of sand whoops that goes horribly wrong. In order for a joint to be considered fully functional, we need to have full range of motion without any restrictions. However, we also need the ability to stabilize and then create force. I promise I’m getting to a point here. While we need full capacity of all of our joints, the hips need to be first on the list. We seldom reach full hip extension during the course of a riding session. My dear friend Patrick Jones was kind enough to pose for a picture that we used to illustrate this point in my book Hidden Horsepower: The Off Road Racer’s Guide to Better Performance. While sitting or standing on the machine, the hips are always partially closed which simply means that there isn’t a straight line from the spine through the leg. This is called hip extension. Hip flexion is the opposite such as a seated position or bent over. Too much time spent in hip flexion can result in the hip flexors becoming brutally short which can affect the position of the pelvis, lower back, upper back, neck and stock market. Ok maybe not the last one, but it’s worth your time to try and get in a better position. I’d like to show you one of my favorite exercises to take care of your short hips. Before you get started, it will help if you grab yourself a resistance band. You can get these from online retailers, or most sporting goods stores. Look for one that is about an inch or inch and a half wide. You can’t always go by color because different manufacturers use different colors. You want the band not the tube. To get started, anchor the band onto something that won’t chase you down. If you have a trusted friend the can hold the band for you. Just make sure you don’t owe them money or anything else that would tempt them to let go of the band.

Step through the loop and place the band high into your gluteal fold (that’s a polite way of saying right under your butt cheek). Take a large step backwards and place the knee on the same leg on the ground. This is a technique called “distraction” which has been used for quite sometime but has been made popular as of late by Dr. Kelly Starrett. He has a website at www.mobilitywod.com which details this exercise many more. I can’t take credit for this exercise, but I use it often and it definitely works. Stay in this position for 2-3 minutes per side. When you are ready to stand up, grab the band with both hands take some tension off. If you don’t have a band, don’t worry; you can still do the same exercise. To add extra resistance, place the front foot on a taller object like a bike stand or a cooler. Please notice that I haven’t used the word “stretch” at all during this article. This is an active exercise. Don’t just sit there and hang out. Go searching for areas that are tight, flex the glutes, abs, and quads to vary the intensity. For more detail on this mobility exercise and a lot more mobility exercises, you can download the free Mobility Manual from my website. I’ve put together this website solely dedicated to fitness for off road racing. You can find it at www.fit-moto.com. You can download the free eBook from there. It has 9 different mobility exercises with pictures and detailed descriptions. As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or fitness related topics that you would like me to try and tackle. Get Better. -Tyler Coody, MS, CSCS coodyt@grenadefitness.com

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Hare Scramble Committee Meeting Minutes 10/22/2016 Location ACMC event at Hog Waller Called to order 7:05 PM Roll call 17 members present Old business None New business Motion 1 was made by the chair to accept a proposal from the board of directors to adjust the minimum age to ride a bike over 250 cc to 14 years of age on the date of the event. This is to come in line with new AMA rules. The new rule to be inserted as subsection 3, Worded as follows: “A rider must be 14 or older to ride motorcycles above 250cc. The age of the rider is determined as of the date of the event. Motion 2nd and Passed (first vote). Motion seconded by Pete Rose. Vote 16 for 0 against. Motion passes and will be presented to the EC for approval. Motion 2 Presented by Bill Toreki This motion was intended to clarify an existing rule pertaining to riding multiple classes in one weekend. Existing reads: A rider may ride one division or class per day, except #10 below. If they elect to move to another division, they must stay in the higher division and not return to the lower division without written request to and approval by the Hare Scrambles Committee. The division that the rider rides first (if the rider decides to change divisions on race day) will be the one that points will be kept on for that race. This is the lower-ranking of the divisions. After the race, they will be scored in the higher division. They will take up to 90% of the earned lower division points with them. PROPOSED: Hare Scramble Rules, Chapter VII, Section A-3 (page 24): 3a. A rider may only ride one class per day, except #10 below. 3b. If a

youth rider elects to compete in a higher class during the season (i.e. PeeWee to 65, 65 to Mini, Mini to Junior, or Junior to Sunday) they must stay in the higher class, and not return to the lower class, without written request to and approval by the Hare Scrambles Committee. Points earned will not transfer between classes. 3c. A rider may not compete on both Saturday and Sunday at the same Meet (weekend), unless the Saturday class is Evo, Vintage, Pre-modern, or Quad (except Quad Junior), except as noted in section 3d, below. 3d. A Mini or Junior rider may compete in both a Saturday and Sunday class at the same meet (weekend) one time; however, they will no longer be eligible for the Saturday class at future meets (see 3b, above). The rider may receive season points in each class. After discussion it was decided to eliminate 3b and accept the revised proposal to read as below. 3a. A rider may only ride one class per day, except #10 below. 3b. A rider may not compete on both Saturday and Sunday at the same Meet (weekend), unless the Saturday class is Evo, Vintage, Pre-modern, or Quad (except Quad Junior), except as noted in section 3d, below. 3c. A Mini or Junior rider may compete in both a Saturday and Sunday class at the same meet (weekend) one time; however, they will no longer be eligible for the Saturday class at future meets (see 3b, above). The rider may receive season points in each class Vote For 9; Against 6. Motion passes to be published for the membership and voted on again Motion 3 Presented by Bryce Koster Motion to create a Pre Modern B class It is felt that the number of A/AA riders competing is discouraging other riders from participating. It was generally agreed that this may be the case but the proposal must be written to include all areas of the rule book that it will affect and needs to be presented in the proper format.
