THE PREZ SAYS

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS T

his month I would like to remember a famous quote from John F. Kennedy that states, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. This statement not only applies to our great country we live in but also to our own organization that we all cherish and enjoy. So the question goes like this, are you one of those that continually takes FTR for granted? Do you make fun of FTR, consistently bad mouth and post all over social media about every little ripple that doesn’t go your way? Or, how about this, all you speak of is negativity and what’s wrong with this or that and expect something to be done about it on social media? In case you folks don’t know it, nothing is going to happen or change on the all mighty Face Book or the FTR forum where everyone can be a hero, a “know it all” or even a bully. From the insults to the negativity, it seems like it’s a free fall anything goes type of mentality. It takes no effort to be negative because you don’t have to even think about it. What does take some thinking is to be positive and constructive. As I spoke at the B.O.D. and General membership meetings about our forum and lack of respect and the negativity displayed by our own members, I didn’t know that one of our property owners was looking on our website for information on how to get his grandson involved with riding in our organization. As he ended up calling me on how to get him signed up and what he needed for his first race, he apparently was roaming around our website and happened to go to our forum. I’m going to quote his exact words here, “What the hell kind of people are part of this organization!” Needless to say, I was at a loss of words until I just asked him what he was talking about. He said he thought this was a family group and was shocked at what was being said. He even called out their names and asked

me who these people were and what their intentions were by their insults and childish comments. He also mentioned that there were a few that tried to answer questions and provide information but a lot of comments he thought was from kids not adults. Talk about being a little embarrassed and not knowing what to say as there was no defense to what he read. I guess my point here is that not only did FTR lose a sponsorship deal with FLY racing because of what they saw on our forum, but now an actual grandfather was drawing an opinion about us. Same goes for all the social media sites and pages, millions of people see what we say about FTR and some have to add their spin on it as they share it with their group. Next thing you know industry and manufactures’ see it as they make note of our dirty laundry. All I’m saying is if there is something that important, wrong or disturbing within FTR that you just have to throw it out there in hopes that it will get fixed or to make yourself look good or, worse yet, embarrass your organization, then it tells me that you simply don’t care. A simple phone call to an official, club member, area director would do wonders to solving issues and bring new ideas to the table. Our committee meetings is where things happen, proposals are brought forth and voted upon. So my question to you is; what can you do for your organization? Complain, gripe, post negative things, insult fellow members or be involved, take the high road, ask constructive questions and offer positive thoughts and ideas. We all do this for fun. This is our hobby, our sport and our relief from the everyday stress of just getting through the day. Enjoy your time here and be thankful for our friends and fellow riders. Thanks for your support, Randy Faul

EDITORS NOTE:

As part of my position within FTR, I have connected with many people in the off-road motorcycle industry. Whether they are the dealers, manufacturers or business/track owners many have had the same negative opinion of past experiences with FTR. After having face to face discussions with them and bringing some of those concerns to the BOD most of them have given FTR a second or even a first chance with advertising with us. Many have attended some of our events and have been extremely pleased with the weekend as they saw it. They loved the family atmosphere. But they still have concerns of FTR’s online presence; particularly the forum. Like Randy said, FTR has lost a major sponsor with Fly Racing but we have also potentially lost a major industry contingency sponsor based strictly on what was seen on the forum. Remember, everything you say has a consequence. Make your words a positive consequence for the kids and future of FTR not a negative one that in the future will have to be repaired.

INTRO TO MOTO TRAINING 18

T

raining for motosports takes special considerations, and there are a few topics that need to be addressed prior to beginning any fitness program. In this article I want to address the nuances of training for motocross, enduro, and hare scrambles racing. We are going to go after 3 primary topics: time domains, movements, and recovery. These 3 topics Tyler Coody MS, CSCS should be the foundation of any training program anyway, but let’s unpack these one by one. Before we start, let’s keep in mind that racing dirt bikes is a sport. When training for any sport, it is important that your strength and conditioning program support the specific demands of your sport. In other words, while any training program is better than no training program, there are definitely ways to increase the effectiveness of your training program. In more traditional sports, like football for instance, there are often completely separate strength and conditioning coaches that prepare the athletes for the demands of the game and the sport practice. With the same mindset, you will need to craft an effective strength and conditioning program that supplements your sport practice (riding practice). Many moto athletes will use their sport practice as their only form of training. This can work, and often times it does work just fine, but you can do better. We will show you how to get started in this article. Step 1: Time Domains Training for time domains can be a tricky. Sometimes, athletes will pick an arbitrary time frame for training that doesn’t correlate as effectively as it could. For simplicity, we are using the term “time domains” in place of energy systems because training for specific energy systems is beyond the scope of this article. Just know that in your training, you need to cover many different time domains. You can set these up many different ways, but our training programs are set up this way: Short Range: 0-4 minutes Mid-Range: 4-12 minutes Long Range: 12 minutes and up If you can become confident in your ability to put out through all of these time domains, you will become very efficient in your racing. In subsequent articles we will dissect these time domains a little more and explain exactly HOW to get the most out of them. To simplify this concept, think about a typical race where you will need to maintain race pace for the duration of the event (long range), you will also need to put out additional effort while racing with something through a section or during the first 4 laps of a moto (mid range). In addition, if you fall or experience something that completely halts your momentum, you’ll need to put out maximal effort for a short period of time to get back to race pace (short range). Training all of these time domains will allow you to handle anything and everything that a race day situation can throw at you. It will be more effective than simply long distance running or cycling which focuses primarily on long range time domains. Step 2: Movements Choosing movements that will have the most correlation to your sport is also very important and can save you a lot of time if you

approach it properly. In the world of strength and conditioning, there is a lot of emphasis placed on choosing movements that are effective in terms of improving the performance of an athlete in a specific sport. Football strength and conditioning programs will have different movements than basketball training programs for instance. However, you will find the staples that are in every strength and conditioning program and ours are no different. The “big 4” as we at Fit-Moto and Grenade Fitness have labeled them are:Bench Press,Squat (box squat),Overhead press, Deadlift These 4 movements are the cornerstone of all of our programs and for good reason. These 4 movements create strength in the main “shapes” your body will be in during ANY exercise. They help to reinforce your positional strength in any movement you will ever perform. We like to take these movements and incrementally increase the load to make each athlete stronger in a safe and structured way. For accessory movements and the rest of the training session, we can focus on things that help to increase the efficiency in the movement of the day and balance out opposing muscle groups. One thing you want to remember is that not all exercises are the most efficient use of your time. While any exercise is better than no exercise, doing biceps curls and calf raises will not get you as strong as you need to be for racing. It is better to save these as “finishers” if you really feel the need to do isolation work. There is certainly a time and place for these, but we need to biggest impact with the least amount of time investment. We will go over each of the big 4 movements in detail in subsequent articles. Step 3: Recover Training consists primarily of breaking down systems and rebuilding them. While it is not physiologically necessary to damage tissues to make them grow, you have to create a large enough stimulus to spark adaptation. In training we are teaching our bodies how to do more work. It really is that simple. We are teaching our muscles to respond to a demand when we need them. In order for the system to adapt to a training stimulus, you have to give proper attention to recovery. The most common method of recovery is time. After a hard enduro on a Sunday, you might walk like Frankenstein until Wednesday, but the soreness eventually goes away. As with most things, there is a better way to recover and help your body process the damage. Paying attention to recovery postrace is a big deal, especially if you race every weekend. Recovering from your training is also important to ensure that you were 100% on race day. Optimal training programs will allow you to get some great training in while also recovering adequately so that you are ready to ride when its time. By making sure you incorporate these 3 steps in creating your training plan, you can ensure that you will get the most of out your training. Keep in mind that the purpose of training is to make you better. It has to support what you are training for. There is a distinct difference between exercising and training. Training has a purpose and should be thought out and directly related to the sport. Next time, we will lay out some specifics on conditioning for off road racing. Since the season is already in motion, we need to focus on getting your conditioning up to par and maintaining your conditioning throughout the season.
