eptember is here and that means our season is well on its way after a long hot summer. I know many of you have traded up to the new 17 models as evidence of the amount of new bikes that were sold at the awards expo. It’s great to see our dealerships supporting our riders with some fantastic deals and the opportunity to keep our business local. All the way from dealerships to performance businesses, these are the ones supporting FTR, our riders and our sport. These guys are there on vendor row every race weekend for you and your family. It’s in their blood and the love of the sport is the reason they’re there and if they can pay for their weekend then they are ahead of the game, so please support all our vendors as it makes our entire sport healthy and productive. As we start this 16/17 season out, let’s all remember why we all do this. We all spend a lot of time and money prepping, loading and driving to be around our friends and the sport we love. Motorcycle people are not your average people, sometimes we don’t
fit in with the everyday lifestyle or mind-set that is considered normal. We kind of live in our own world and our ways of having fun is not what the average person can grasp. We make our memories a special way whether it be on the starting line or around the campfire bench racing. Off road families are one of a kind and a small group that seems to be getting closed in on every day. I’ve said this before, we all are so very lucky to live in a country where we can ride dirt bikes. To be around our friends during a long weekend where we can drive away from the stress, drama and spend some quality time with our families is what we do. As we start this season, let’s keep the fun factor as our main goal and let everything else fall into place. See you at the races. Randy Faul

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
ear FTR Family, Over the years I have seen many people come and go in this organization. Some never return. Some come back and bring new friends. I have often wondered if I could step away from this family. If I did, what would it feel like? Could I come back? At the time, I could not think of anything that could cause me to take a reprieve from our near 20 year stint. Well, I am going to be able to answer those questions sooner than I thought. We have given many years of our lives to this racing organization. Both of my boys grew up here. I remember putting Austin (our 16 year old) under the shade of palmetto bushes in his baby carrier as I chased his older brother around in the Pee Wee Class. I have served in all positions of our local club. I have organized and put on hare scrambles and Enduro’s. I started out as a C rider and worked my way up to A. Both of my boys and I have won championships. I have married folks in the organization as well as done many funerals. When you boil it all down, it’s about relationships. I guess that is why it was so hard to write this letter. I have put it off as long as I can (sorry about making you wait Dave and Dorothy). The Dicksons are going to have to take this fall off from full-time racing. My job pressure is pretty great right now and we are in the middle of a house remodel. Does this mean we are not coming back? No. Does this mean that Off-Road Racing Ministries is closing up? No. As a family, we just needed to shift our racing into neutral for a while and get some other things taken care of this year. Will we come to any races, maybe? We might try to hit a few endures this season (by just showing up on Sundays). However, I wanted to get something in print before rumors started flying and you all thought I had lost my mind or worse. Speaking of writing, I want to keep this letter short and sweet. But there are so many things I want to say. As a matter of fact, many of you have asked me to write a book about the escapades within the life of FTR. One day, maybe I will. But definitely not right now. Just to let you know, Ragan and I did not make this decision lightly. We have been going to the Lord with it for a while. We will continue to pray for FTR and our many friends. We will pray that God will not only protect you but continue to bless this great organization. For all these years our race number has been 121. It stands for Hebrews 12:1. Let me leave you with this passage:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” In closing, it is my prayer that every single one of you will turn to the Lord. This life is short and fast. None of us knows what tomorrow may bring. I do not worry about death, for my faith and trust is in my Savior Jesus Christ. Though I may not be at most of the races this season, if you need someone to talk to, I am still at the end of my cell phone. Don’t try and wait until the end of your life to get right with God. Not only is that a waste, there is no security or peace in that kind of living. God has a wonderful plan for you and He loves you. Never forget that! Until then, I look forward to the next time “I’ll see you on the line.” Your friend, Andy Dickson FTR Chaplain Master A #121

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS PITBITS I know word moves fast in social media but if your not already doing so, keep a FTR family member and employee at Sarasota Power Sports, Gene Kapica in your prayers. Gene suffered a massive stroke and heart attack and is still hospitalized but very slowly making progress. Here’s to a full recovery from FTR Magazine Gene. In case you haven’t heard, FMF is selling the DA8 STRONG Tee to help support off-road legend Destry Abbott battle his way through Leukemia. 100% of the proceeds go to Destry’s medical bills which are sure to be enormous. You can get it on the FMF website for $25.

New Hare Scrambles Pre-Entry Website
Oct 1-2: This is standard GNCC stuff: tight woods, mud, and elevation change. Some high speed sections are usually thrown in, including some wide-open grass track. Ohio has some dedicated off-road fans, so you’ll see a big crowd here.
FTR has contracted with a new company for Hare Scramble pre-entries. The website is: www.imathlete.com. •You can sign in to this website and build your profile. •You only have to do this once. •You will use the Username and Password you set up to access your account for the pre-entry. •Pre-entry will open approximately 10 days before the race weekend.
10
Oct 29-30: The Ironman GNCC is one of the most popular races on the circuit. Tom’s Marine Sales, the local Polaris dealership hosts the event, and their large farm offers plenty of land for the track. Community support for this race is amazing. Ironman GNCC banners hang downtown, and the spectator count is incredible. The event has grown so much that it’s overflowing from race to full-on industry trade show with many companies displaying the next year’s models.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS ey Two-Strokes, don’t you just hate it when you put down hard laps and the dude on the four-stroke you’ve passed passes you in the gas stop for... the second time! We, at TF Racing, have chosen to ride a KTM 125 XS, clearly our choice; but to add to our hurtles we burn 120 ounces of fuel per lap on a course that has a 11 to Tom Fleming 12 mile loop. If it turns out to be a South Florida course then being on the main jet more helps burn even more fuel. Our good friend George Pollard discovered a company called Technology Elevated; The folks that manufacture the “SmartCarb”. Oh, you’re thinking “Just another Carburetor ?” Nope, don’t think so. The innovation is awesome! We went from burning 110 to 120 ounces of fuel per lap to 75 to 85 ounces per lap just by switching from the stock production KTM carburetor, that we gave a customized taper bore, to the SmartCarb. The taper bore we do has always produced substantial smoothness, and welcomed performance. The SmartCarb is supplied with a patent-pending check valve system. This system operates on buoyancy & gravity to seal the float bowl pressurization circuit in the rare occurrence of flooding or laying the engine on its side (Crashing and tip overs). The check valve effectively seals the fuel inside the carburetor body instead of spilling the fuel out on the ground. Thus, the wasted fuel, which is needed, is not being spilled on the ground while the motorcycle is being beaten on over rough trails or jumps. An “up north trick” is to insert two ball bearings into the overflow hoses on the side of the carb. Works good till you fall over, you fill the engine
with fuel. Not too good during a race or a ride with buddies. This is a pretty “kool” product. The SmartCarb does not have jets... Yes, there are no jets! The SmartCarb does have a slide and uses a metering rod some what like a typical needle, BUT, its not a tapered needle at all. All jetting is done from the top of the carburetor (idle adjustment is very important) using a thumb wheel the size of a U.S. dime. However, it works not as you think it would. To richen the fuel you turn the adjuster while holding the throttle wide open. Oh, oops... The engine MUST BE OFF! Do not adjust the metering rod with the engine running, really... I could see someone doing that; it is America. While holding the throttle wide open, to richen, push the adjuster down and gently turn to the right softly, you will feel a click that will lock the adjuster into the top of the metering rod. (To Richen Turn Right) Turning to the right richens, count the clicks... it’s strongly recommended to move the adjuster one to two clicks. To lean you follow the same procedure, but by turning the adjuster to the left. (To Lean Turn Left) Just way too easy. There are only two external adjustments, the metering rod located at the top of the SmartCarb near the throttle cable and the idle adjuster located on the left side. The SmartCarb works by compensating for the “AMBIENT AIR DENSITY”, once you have your jetting correct, you are finished. Even if you live in flat land Florida and go riding in mountains of Colorado, a mile high, NO adjustment is needed. We went from 3 gas stops in a 3 hour race to only just one gas stop. Also, the KTM 125 has a 36mm carburetor. So with a custom taper bore, the reed side of the body can have a diameter of 39mm, give or take. This produces speed and high performance, but does effect technical low speed throttle control. The SmartCarb uses a tear-drop design. This greatly increase low speed performance; you get the best of both worlds, small opening for increased torque, and the same high speed performance expected from a larger carburetor. A very interesting note is the SmartCarb produces accelerated airflow past the metering rod that produces fuel droplets that are much smaller and highly atomized fuel droplets that exceed the droplets produced by the modern EFI systems on the late model 4-strokes. Technology Elevated says the power increases are as much as 8 to 14%. That’s huge for doing nothing but installing the SmartCarb.

ow about a test? Don’t worry, you don’t need to study. Take your thumb and place it on the inside of your shin bone. Press hard with your thumb for a few seconds and then take a look. Do you see a dent? If you do, you are dehydrated. That dent is a good indicator that the tissues in your shin and all over your body are matted down and junky. Let’s get specific about hydration and how it can dramatically increase your
The Baseline
The off-road racing season is upon us and it is important that we prepare our bodies for race day. Proper hydration is a very important part of preparing for a race. As a baseline, you should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces per day. For example, if a person weighs 200 pounds, they need to take in 100 ounces of water as a baseline. This is a general rule of thumb, and does not compensate for water lost during intense activity, and doesn’t include other fluids like coffee or soda. It is important to stay hydrated all the time, not just on race day.
Replace What You Lose
Most people will lose sweat at the rate of about 1 pound per hour. If you want a more precise measurement, weigh yourself naked before and after a ride of about 30 minutes (in private please, not trail side.) The weight you lose during that time frame is almost all water weight. Using the amount of weight lost, you can estimate how much water you need to replace per hour during your event. Remember, 16 ounces equals 1 pound and 1 pound of weight lost is 16 ounces you must replace. Most high level triathletes will take in about 4-6 ounces every 15 minutes during their race. If you ride like I do, that relates to about 4-6 trees hit every 15 minutes while wrestling with your drinking system. However, it is important to get fluids back into your system in small but frequent amounts to avoid stomach discomfort. How and when you do this will take a little experimenting. On the morning of your event, try to stop drinking water about 1.5 hours prior to your event to allow for urination to occur. If you have maintained proper hydration levels, you’ll be fine.
Water and Electrolytes
16
In addition to extra water consumption, you will also need to replace electrolytes. This can be achieved through either eating or by taking electrolyte supplements. It has been estimated through anecdotal evidence that in 1 pound of sweat you also lose: •220mg of sodium •63mg of potassium •8mg of magnesium •16mg of calcium There are ways that we can put these electrolytes back into your system quickly and effectively during a race. Many supplement companies are now making electrolyte tabs that dissolve into plain water and contain high levels of these electrolytes. Companies like NUUN, GU Energy, Hammer Nutrition, Camelbak, and many more make these tabs which can be found at most online retailers as well as bicycle stores. It isn’t a bad idea to take a tab a day with your normal hydration routine to keep
dekdef photo
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
from urinating out all of the water you’ve worked so hard to put in your system. Adding a little sea salt or taking a salt tablet will work in a pinch as well. When choosing an electrolyte replacement supplement, it’s best to avoid the commercial sports drinks containing high doses of sugar. Insulin spikes during your event can also wreak havoc on your race day performance…but that’s another topic for another day. Dehydration is a serious issue. If you aren’t taking advantage of proper hydration protocols, you could be missing a lot of performance. Dehydration has also been linked to an increase of core body temperature, and higher rate of perceived exertion (RPE). A dehydration level of as little as 1% could lead to a 10% decrease in performance. Therefore, many of the world’s top endurance athletes treat hydration and nutrition as two completely separate pieces of the performance puzzle. In short, as far as hydration is concerned, treat every day like race day. Be well, be fast, Coach
ABOUT COACH TYLER
Greetings! My name is Tyler Coody and I am a strength and conditioning coach, moto enthusiast, and teacher. I hope to provide you all with some tips, strategies, and information that you can use to improve your health, fitness, and of course your race performance. For my full time career, I am the Fitness and Wellness Director at North Florida Community College in Madison, FL. I run our recreational fitness facility, do personal training and coaching, and I teach classes as well. I am a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the NSCA and I have a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from A.T. Still University. In addition to working at NFCC, I run a strength and conditioning website at www. GrenadeFitness.com. To find out more about us and all of our training programs, you can visit the site. There’s too much going on to list here! We have a full page dedicated to fitness programs for off road racers and more content is being added all the time. There are premium programs and a lot of free programs and content as well. I’ve been racing Enduros since I was 13 years old. I haven’t been able to put together a full season in a while, but I still love the sport and I believe that the FTR is an incredible organization. In 2001 I won the C-Open class which is my biggest success in racing so I hardly miss a chance to brag about it! I was awarded a scholarship that same year from the FTR which I also very proud of. My father, Randy Coody, has been a member of the FTR for many years, and I owe my passion for racing to him! I have ridden a lot of races since then, and I will certainly do some more. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to string together another full season! A few years back, I wrote a book called Hidden Horsepower: The Off Road Racer’s Guide to Better Performance. You can find this book on Amazon and it’s available in print and in e-book format. In this book, I outline a lot of the content that I hope to share with you all in this article series. I covered such topics as hydration, nutrition, supplements, fitness programs, recovery, mobility, and more. There are color photos of all of the movements and drills covered in the book.

FTR RESCUE UNIT YAMAHA WOLVERINE
hat time is it? Time for the 2016-2017 hare scramble season. I hope that everyone had a safe, fun filled summer and still managed to get in some seat time. Nothing like some 100 degree plus weather to train in. If you were able to make the banquet you got to see the newest addition to the safety team’s arsenal, our 2016 Yamaha Wolverine. For those not able to make it and any new members let me catch you up to speed. Back in early 2007 we were developing ideas on how to get riders out of the woods safely and efficiently. Our current way at that time was 4-wheelers or pickup trucks which were not very conducive to good patient care. Along came the Hazeltines, long standing members of FTR, with the idea of a modified side by side. They worked with Yamaha on a safety grant to get us the 2008 Rhino. The Rhino required fabrication and a retro fit process, which was completed at WMR in Stuart, Florida, in order to make it usable as the rescue unit we currently use. Fast forward to the present. At theBartow race I met a new FTR member, Jason Ennis from Central Florida Powersports, who was interested in what our safety team did and how he could help. We discussed the need for a new rescue unit; introducing the Yamaha Wolverine. Our current unit has tons of hours and needed some TLC. Although the safety grant program was no longer an option, Jason worked with Yamaha to get us a great deal. He was able to offer FTR a unit well below retail. Next step was to raise the funds to make this happen. Joe Carrasquillo, a Daytona Dirt Riders member who has a passion for EMS coupled with his love of racing jumped on board and worked tirelessly to help raise funds. With the help of individual FTR members and club support we were able to secure funds necessary to make this endeavor a reality. We took delivery of the unit just as the 2015-2016
19
season was wrapping up. The wolverine made its way to Metal Masters Manufacturing Services Orlando under the care of CFTR member Eric Berard. We worked with him to fabricate all the necessary components to take it from a standard side by side to a rescue unit. HBD Moto Grafx’s Ronnie Hames provided the graphics to give the unit that one of a kind look. From there it was off to the banquet for display. After the banquet she headed to Ft. Lauderdale to Sea Vision where Randy Rash and George Pollard completed all the electrical wiring and installation of the emergency lighting. American Import Auto jumped in to supply the sirens and winch systems. This has been an amazing project with the final product being all that we could want and then some. This new unit will support our hare scramble series for many years to come. Now that we have a second unit, the Safety Team looks forward to being able to provide our services to both series. Carol Preston and crew will utilize the Rhino at all in state enduro’s as well as be a backup at many of the hare scrambles. Myself and company will continue as we have in the past to support our hare scramble series. Thank you to all the individuals and clubs who gave willingly to support this project, without you this project would never have become a reality. I would also like to give thanks to all the folks that worked to make her a rescue unit any EMS agency would be proud of. Stay tuned as we detail the completed FTR Wolverine.
A sample of Eric Berards amazing handy work with the metal. Reconfigured roll cage, patient area and jump seat and plenty of storage all topped off with awesome diamond plate work

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS SPECIAL NOTICE
Record of FTR Executive Committee Decision – August 22, 2016 Location: Electronic vote via email Members participating: Randy Faul (President), Kevin Vaughan (Treasurer), Jack Terrell (Secretary), Randy Rash (HS Chair), Allen Pearce (Enduro Chair), Carol Preston, (MX Chair) Members not participating: Amanda Richardson (Vice President) The Executive Committee has received an e-mail from Amanda Richardson resigning her position as Vice President. The text of the message follow: “It is with a heavy heart that I type this e-mail to inform you all that I will be stepping down as vice president. With my last semester quickly approaching and my current internship, my time for outside activities has been extremely limited. I’m sure all of you can appreciate the transition from kid to adult, trying to plan for the future and how time consuming it all is. I’m on track to graduate in December, at which time I will be house and career searching. It would not only benefit me to step down, but it is without doubt the best decision for the organization. The position of vice president is an important role that needs to be seated with someone involved, passionate and easily accessible. Thank you not only for your consideration, your time and everything you all do for our organization, but also for allowing me to be a part of this great team and organization.” The Executive Committee has accepted Amanda’s resignation with regrets, thanking her for her many hours of volunteer service to FTR. We will miss her and we wish her success in her new occupational pursuits. An electronic vote was taken on a motion to accept Amanda Richardson’s written resignation as Vice President, to declare the position to be vacant, and to call for a special election to fill the unexpired term (1 year) of the Vice President. The election shall be held concurrently with the 2016 FTR general election. The motion was seconded and unanimously passed. Minutes submitted by Jack Terrell, FTR Secretary
