FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Behind the Scenes Our H/S season has finally started with the first visit to the Bartow property hosted by CFTR. It was still a little warm and humid but the atmosphere was exciting and everyone was happy to be out of the daily grind. Being the first HS of the season you could expect a larger than normal crowd but somebody must have put the word out that there was a race going on as the weekend riders topped well over 800! With that being said, the sign up line at FTR was overwhelming and the events had to be postponed for an hour as to get everyone signed up. CFTR handled their end promptly led by one of our seasoned club coordinators Elesa Berard and everyone got signed up in time for practice. Ftr’s sign up crew was wide open with processing new memberships, renewals’, transponders, class changes, number changes and answering questions from new members as I asked if there was anything I could do to help and somebody said, just stand back out of the way. Yes Ma’m I certainly will and Elvis quietly left the building! LOL As the weekend came to a close, I would like to commend CFTR in doing a super job on the weekend. From a very well run program to their great course that had it all, well done! Hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and it was great seeing everyone again. I didn’t get attend the DDR event as I was at the other Bartow property getting our event ready but did here some real nice compliments on their event also. I was also glad DDR got their event in as they have had some tough breaks with the weather and having to reschedule. I certainly can relate to that situation as in the past we have had to postpone several times. These events take a tremendous amount of time from the club members as you basically give up every weekend for months preparing and there’s no easy date to pick to get it done. I can certainly relate to both of these

clubs, especially CFTR as this summer has been brutally hot as they probably started work at the beginning of August. ACMC will probably be in the books as this gets published and I’m sure they can relate also as to what it takes to have a weekend of racers showing up. Any of our events takes a huge amount of work from the clubs driving the first stake to all the volunteers handling the weekend events. Along with our enduros, these events just don’t happen but I have said it before, FTR events are a well recognized, best organized and one of the premier organizations across the U.S. and all thanks to clubs that have members that bleeds off road and motorcycles. Whether you just ride, wrench on or race a motorcycle, you are a part of a great sport that has some of the best people on the planet called family. Be proud, positive and stay active in our sport and it will strive.

We were two weeks from our race date, the scheduled first race of the season. The courses were laid out, the camping area mowed; only minor reroutes or repairs to be completed. We were ready to race. And then the rains came… again. In two days our dry, “race-ready” property had turned into a swamp. The Peewee course was ready for jet skis, the camping area accessible if you had floats on you vehicle. God’s plan is not always our plan. There is a saying, “man plans; God laughs.” When “things” happen, we forget we have a choice in how to deal with them. We are told to pray for patience. It usually goes something like this:” Lord give me patience and give it to me now! That’s not exactly what God had in mind. Lamentations 3:25-27 says, “God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits, to the woman who diligently seeks. It’s a good thing to quietly hope, quietly hope for help from God.” And there’s the choice. I can get frustrated, angry, or just give up or I can trust God that His plan, though I don’t understand

it at the time, is the best course of action and I will wait and quietly hope for His help whether it’s dry land for a race or family, work or health issues. He is God, if we pray and wait with quiet hope, He will respond and is such a way that we will know it came from Him. Remember, we’re His kids and He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the price for our mess ups and mistakes (our sins). So, keep the quiet hope and passionately wait. He’s listening and loving us the whole time. “The Good Race” joy service is every Saturday night from 7:30 to 7:45 pm at the CMA tent on vendor’s row. We hope to see you there! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

Thanks for listening, Randy

Gavin's WRMC 2-Man/4-Hour HareScramble

ood day to all, I am Gavin Flanigan I race 200A in the FTR series. I recently made a trip to northeast Ohio for my brother Brennan’s wedding. (I was a groomsman.) When Planning for this wedding I saw on the schedule that our club (DDR) was putting on that weekends race. I was kind of bummed to miss it. My brother told me there was a 2 man 4 hour race on the Sunday after the wedding, I told my Dad and he said, “Well it looks like we are hauling the bike up then so, better find a partner.” So, I called my Buddy from Ohio and he hooked me up with a fellow GNCC racer Tanner Curfman. The Race was held at Western Reserve M/C club in Salem Ohio where I was born and raised for 10 years before moving to Florida. It is so nice up there for this time of year. Not so darn Hot. When we pulled in to the race at 9 am my Dad and I were kind of lost, as I guess you need to go to a few there to get the idea of what and where to go. As my Dad was tweaking a few things on the bike I went to find my partner and figure out where the pits were going to be, so we knew where we would switch off. Tanner's Dad, Chris, was super helpful in getting us familiar with the days event. Oh yeah thanks for the spark plug Chris. As there were no venders at this race, not use to that. Dad got the bike running just in time for the start of the race. I was going to be starting the race, dead engine start, no lemans start. I Started in 2nd out of 9 riders in my class 125-200. The course was about 6 miles a lap, and let me tell you, it started out nice for the first lap or 2, then the mud came big time. I forgot how slippery Ohio wet Clay can be. I could not get any traction after my first leg. Tanner and I switched off every 3 laps, I have to say I was not a fan of that, since I am used to racing 2 hours. Getting off the bike and sitting for 40 min waiting kind of sucks. Tanner and I had the lead going into my last leg by 1min, 20 seconds with my last 2 laps to go. I told myself to ride smooth and smart and the last thing Tanner said to me was pick good lines, so that’s what I tried to do. On my last lap I got stuck in a narley mud hole and saw what I thought was 2nd place passing me, I calmed down and got my bike out and pushed hard to the finish, When I got to the pits where I saw my Dad, his last words as I was heading out was “Don’t lose the Lead”. When I saw him I was so disappointed that I thought I lost the race, Dad came up to me and said well how did you do? I answered I got passed I think we got 2nd. Well Tanners Dad came up to me and said 2nd place got stuck for 2 laps and he just got out that’s when I saw him pass me, So I was in the lead the whole time. What a relief. As we went to check the scores we saw that we did in fact win our class by 2 laps. There were many races that quit and pulled off the course, there were a lot of classes as well, but nothing like The FTR races. FTR definitely has one of the best organized race series in the country, I think only out done by GNCC. This was a fun and challenging race, but nothing as put together as an FTR race. They tried to give Tanner and I tee shirts for winning, But you Know My Dad he was not having that, we drove 15 hours and 1000 miles, he was not letting that happen, so they had us turn in our tee shirts and they gave us 1rst place

trophies instead, and my Dad bought a tee shirt, lol. The gate fee was $10 dollars a head to get in and only $30 a racer or $60 a team, not bad, but you had not venders or rider support there. So that was a little disappointing. It was not an AMA race, from what I herd this was the 42nd Annual 2 Man 4Hour race held there. Might be something for FTR to look into as a non-points race to do for fun. There was a father son class, a money class, a 2-stroke class, a 4-stroke class, plus more. Just an idea? The best part of the race was seeing all my old friends and family, thank you all for coming out and cheering us on, I loved every second of it. The worst Part was the race ending and having to leave. I had a blast and my grandparents got to watch me do what I love to do, and WIN!!! I would like to Thank everyone that helps me out doing what I love, Lectron Fuel Systems, Body Armor Super Drink, Ormond Out Post, Level 10 Performance, Streamline Hotel, TF Suspension, Thor MX, Ultra Sports Apparel, my girlfriend Hannah Grzech, my Mom, and my Dad for doing all the maintenance on my bike and spending endless money and time in the garage getting ready for the next race. I love and thank you all.

6 TRAINING TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR LAP TIMES with Coach Robb

R

iding fast (and for a long period of time) is within your reach—it's not just for the genetically gifted or factory riders. Many times, the simple things hold you back: quality/quantity of sleep, food, hydration, mental outlook, proper warm up and preparation to name a few. It goes without saying - you must put in quality training (both on and off the track) to develop speed. However, many racers are surprised to learn that what they do off the track makes a big difference regarding how fast they go on the track. Use these six simple training strategies to improve your lap times. #1 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Sport Specificity You won't become a faster racer by climbing rocks. As a racer, sport specific speed and efficiency requires two elements. First, the pattern of joint and muscle coordination must be specific to your racing. Second, you need to make sure that you are subjecting your body to the exact conditions and effort levels that you will experience on race day. Through a year-long performance program that is based on the scientific overload principle, an athlete will move his or her level of speed and endurance to the next level incrementally from week to week and month to month. #2 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Work Smart, Not Hard Make the most of every workout by working out with a purpose. Before you embark on a training program (both on and off the track), establish 3, 6 and 12-month goals to help keep you focused when the physical training becomes difficult. If necessary, consult with an online program or human performance coach (not an ex-mechanic!) to design a program that includes strength, flexibility, nutrition and mental development elements to maximize your training results in the shortest period of time. Your training plan should focus on quality, rather than quantity. High-quality training is specific to your goals and available amount of time to train. Training beyond what is necessary will wear you down both mentally and physically. # 3 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Vary Your Lap Times & Training Intensities Riding the same pace day after day creates a “speed rut”. Vary your riding durations and intensity levels regularly to become a stronger, faster racer. Include skills/drills, negative split intervals, heart rate ladders, long motos and short sprint intervals throughout the week of riding. Your body will adapt to the various demands associated with these workout durations and intensity levels leaving you fresh for key races. #4 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Eat Right The only way your body is going to be handle higher rates of speed is if your body has the necessary fuel to grow and adapt to the stress you submit your body to. The necessary elements are simple: fresh fruits, vegetables and lean sources of protein. The fruits and vegetables provide your body the vitamins and minerals

18 www.floridatrailriders.org

necessary for your overall health; an additional benefit is the high water content – this helps hydrate your body from the inside out. The lean protein provides your body the amino acids necessary to rebuild the muscle tissue that you have torn down in training and racing. # 5 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Sleep more When you look at the busy schedules that racers keep, sleep is usually bounced around by either going to bed late or getting up early. This pattern of sleep deprivation eventually leads to a drop in performance, feelings of depression and frustration with training and life in general. Cutting sleep short will eventually undermine all of your fitness and race speed because during sleep, the body releases growth hormones that repair damaged tissue resulting from the stress of training. As you increase the amount of either intensity or duration, the amount of sleep must also increase accordingly to maintain balance within the body. Ideally we are looking for 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night for optimum performance on the track. # 6 Way to Improve Your Lap Times: Warm Up Sufficiently Riders frequently comment that they feel better at the end of a race than they do at the beginning (ironically lap times validate this feeling). The reason for this is because the body has reached an optimum performance level within both the muscle tissue and the internal systems that deliver oxygen to the working muscles and remove the metabolic waste created in the energy producing cycle (i.e. lactic acid). By warming up for 5-10 minutes with a Concept 2 rower, bicycle or a jump rope will get the blood flowing into your arms and legs along with raise your heart rate and your internal body temperature. This will keep you from using the first few laps of your race to warm the body up. Coach Robb has been working with riders & racers since 1987 and is the founder of the Complete Racing Solutions Performance Program, the Mental Blueprint of Success, MotoE Amateur Development Program, MotoE Educational Series & Nutritionally Green Supplements based out Orlando Florida.

2018 Peace River Hare Scramble

The 2018-2019 Florida Trail Riders Hare Scramble season got underway with the Central Florida Trail Riders organizing another fantastic event with the running of the 2018 Peace River Hare Scramble in beautiful Bartow, Florida. It became very clear right away how pumped up everyone was as there were over 800 entries. Scott Gawler Jr took the AA and Overall win in a very fast bike class that saw the return to the woods of Garrett Edmisten. Brandon Frazier was the fastest Quad on the course as he took his first win of the season. Great job to everyone at CFTR and FTR for putting on another successful event and showing the best organization in the sport.
