FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS H

ere we are in the New Year and our season is fixing to be wide open with a very busy next three months. Enduros, H/S, GNCC, S/X, Bike week, Daytona and some trips to Croom are some of the opportunities available for all of us to go out and enjoy some riding. So here’s your chance to try out all that new gear that you received over the Christmas holiday with high hopes that everything is going to fit. With the New Year comes the transition of our newly elected positions on the E.C. and our area directors. I want to give Kevin Vaughan a big Thank You and a job well done while serving as treasurer for several terms. Kevin has served unselfishly for many years while being available at any time for meetings, conference calls and emails. While Allan Pearce moves over to the treasurer position, the Enduro committee has appointed George Tolsen as our new Enduro Chairman. George brings many years of experience and has been involved in FTR for many years as he rides both the Enduro’s and H/S events. With some new members added to our B.O.D. , FTR looks to have another strong year with so many members stepping up to offer their time and experience to make your organization one to be proud of. As we do have some growing pains and we do disagree on occasions, I am constantly reminded by outsiders and other riders from different states that the FTR really provides quality and consistent events. Hardly anyone can believe we have a

Safety Team on hand at every H/S that is there in minutes to handle any situation and to take care of us should we auger in. With our Tech team keeping everyone on a level playing field at every event and our own Uncle Bill handling our starting grids, both club and FTR sign up operations always on point it’s no wonder people take notice when they come to any of our events. Clubs continue to offer some of the best courses with the bar continuing to be raised. Along with the many vendors offering parts and accessories’, suspension and repairs, and some of the best food available, our events have something for everyone. So next time you have a great time at one of our weekend getaways, thank some of these folks that make these weekends happen. Even if you have an off weekend, something doesn’t go right or you feel wronged, be appreciative of what we have, be positive and things will work out. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS R

My dad got his new CR500 on Christmas morning in 2001. At the time I'm not sure if anyone knew it would be the last year they were manufactured. Before that he was racing a 1995 model which was essentially the same bike since they weren't updated since 1991ish. They were popular bikes back then, as this was before the 450s were out. The Open class had few other options other than the 500. Since that Christmas this bike has been put through more than most. It has an A-Open jacket on it's record, 1 or 2 seasons in AA, and countless hours at Croom. This bike has so many hours that our boots have rubbed holes in the side of the sub frame that had to be welded in before the Indiantown race. Ok lets get to racing it. Can I start it? That's the first hurdle. Now that it's running just point it in the right direction and scoot up on the seat to try to keep the front wheel down. Racing these bikes is unlike anything you've raced before. I've had 17 years of experience on this bike and it actually got away from me on one straight and I almost looped it. I got a pretty bad start and ended up in 8th place around the first

corner. I caught up to Kasey who was in 4th place and got a free pass when he missed a turn. Kasey hung with me and

together we sped up to catch 3rd place and both got by when he made a mistake in the mud. After that my goal was to settle for 3rd and not let the 500 wear me out. Unfortunately I got a flat tire at the end of lap 2 that ended my race. Thats 2 DNFs in a row on the 500. Major bummer! Engine 15/10. I FIRMLY believe that the reason they stopped R&D on these bikes is because they would have slowed sales of 450s. Brakes 10/10. Thank God. Suspension 7/10. Normal Honda stuff, at race time it was sprung for a much heavier person. Bottom line: If you're lazy with maintenance this bike is for you. Because it is so powerful, the engine is rarely worked hard. A top end can last 100 hours or more, our crank is still original, and the clutch is seldom slipped to make it rev. Otherwise it is an obsolete machine for anything other than a novelty or the sand dunes. Jacob Gilliam #100 Plus 30

WHAT'S HE RIDING NOW?

ound 4 of the HS series was in Bartow aboard my dad's 2001 CR500. I tried to race it at round 3 but I only made it to the first corner before a big crash forced me to postpone.

I am currently a student at the University of Central Florida working on my bachelor’s of science in Psychology working my way towards medical school but also work part-time around my school work. I have a yellow lab service dog named Sophie, who will sometimes be on the trails with me. I started my passion for photography young. When I was in elementary and middle school I always had a small camera I would play around with. When I got into high school I had a family friend who is a well known, and very skilled, photographer in our area mentor me. It was she who really pushed me to use my talent and develop it. I bought my first real camera in high school with $200 I had saved up over many weeks. Once I outgrew that I got my first real professional camera for my 17th birthday, a Nikon D3300. Which if you go to some races and see Karen Holme, she now uses that camera. Now I use a Nikon D7200 which I bought with my high school graduation money. I am almost entirely self taught, and my mentor, Joelle Brooks, advanced my knowledge and taught me how to compose my photos. I have been riding since I was a toddler. My first bike was a PW 50, then I went to riding quads until just a few years ago. I now ride a YZ 125. But if you see me on the trails I will probably be riding my Grizzly 450 four-wheeler. I learned about FTR through my aunt and uncle, Karen and Carl Holme. They invited me to photograph their Bad Bass Hare Scrambles. Then I figured out that Shaun Foutch's parents were my neighbors, and he introduced me to the rest of FTR at the last race in Bartow.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

W

e are very blessed and THANK ALL OF YOU who donated, volunteered, came by to eat, play, shop and say hello. You are the reason we will be able to puchase items to give back to the youth. We started small at this race and were able to pass out Orange Goggles to all the PW riders who came through tech. We do have a few larger items, one of them is a Atlas Neckbrace, that will be released this season. Thank you to the entire Old School Trail Riders Club for allowing us to set up and make the event happen. The next breakfast fundraiser will be on March 17th at the SADRA race. Please stop by and see us. Weather permitting there will be a new annual event at this race!! Stay tuned. Sincerly, Dennis, Lee, Andrew and Matt's family and friends. #52 #BatchieStrong

A winter storm came blowing in the night before, bringing rain and cold air. We are greatful that we were still able to cook for the first official Matt Batchie Foundation Pancake Breakfast.

C

ome and support the mission at the SADRA Shamrock Scramble, Saturday March 17th in Bartow, Fl. Breakfast will be served from 7am-10am or until all the food is gone. All proceeds go to the Matt Batchie Foundation.
