s our competition season comes to a close and the final points are tallied, there has been some excellent racing along with some true sportsmanship. The concern shown from our members and our competitors during their race just takes center stage on why FTR continues to be the great organization it is. Many of you have stopped your race and given up your position to check on or attend a fellow rider that has had a mishap. I have heard so many stories that are just overwhelming on the unselfishness that our riders continue to display. I guess it boils down to taking care of our FTR family and friends in ways that nobody on the outside could understand and that’s why our organization is special. I had the opportunity to assist our medical team at the River City Dirt Riders event last month and what an eye opener it was. Normally there are 5-6 medical personnel on hand at every event but this time we were short. Running from one side of the property to the other checking on our riders, it brought a whole new perspective of what their

s I am a member of the Daytona Dirt Riders, this past weekend was a very big deal. The Strickland Ranch Shootout finally took place 9 months after its original date in September 2017. As most of you know, we had to postpone the race numerous times due to the flooding of our property from the hurricanes.
This last weekend started out great with clear skies and warm sunshine. By Sunday morning, things had changed. We woke up to fog that soon turned to mist and then to a steady, unending, drizzle. Sections of the Sunday course had to be rerouted as it soon became a “mudder”. Even with this, most of the riders enjoyed the challenge and complimented the club for their work. God sometimes lets it rain on us. Sometimes it’s a light but annoying shower, like “where did I put those keys?” to full blown tornadoes that make you ask "Why God why?".
weekly schedule is about. Fortunately we didn’t have any major injuries and hardly any calls the entire weekend. Still the few that I was involved with didn’t require any transports out but it did give me a different outlook on what all takes place when the call comes in. I would also like to compliment the RCDR club for a job well done as they were thrown a unpredictable weekend with some weather that called for some quick course decisions. Our next event coming up is our awards ceremony on August 4th that is shaping up to be a fun filled day with lots of awards to be given out. We are also looking for volunteers to help so if you can spare a few hours please contact Lacey Nordle as she is graciously heading up our event once again. As always, Thanks for listening. Randy Faul
So, when those “storms of life” come, and they will, try not ask God “why” but “what are You trying to teach me and how can I use this situation to better earn the right to speak about Your love and compassion. Jesus said it very well when his “crew” were out on a boat in the middle of storm: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." (Matthew 14:27) He will see you through it all (!), just let Him. We have started “The Good Race” joy service every Saturday night from 7:30 to 7:45 pm. We meet at the CMA tent on vendor’s row. Bring a chair and come join us! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA
About 9 years ago I had a tornado come out of the blue. I truly did not know if He was going to let me stay down here. While I was ready to “go home”, it was certainly not what I wanted. God brought me through that storm and used it to turn my perspective and my life direction. It is because of that change that I am involved in the Florida Trail Riders. This last weekend God used that weather. While none of us wanted the rain, that Sunday tested our club’s resourcefulness and we came out stronger for it.

irst off I want to thank everyone in FTR , TF Racing, Mike Hall, Tom and Ellen Fleming and everyone else who helped and donated and reached out to Miki and I. Your love and support is helping us through one of the toughest times of my life physically and financially. As the bills are still piling up. I’ve been waiting to send out this update and massive Thank You on my 4 month appointment. This has been one of the hardest things I have had to deal with mentally, as well in my lifetime of racing. I’ve hit a lot of trees, rocks, and berms! But this was one of those crashes that really makes you think ! I was very lucky that I hit the way I did. I could have easily hit my head or neck. On a lighter note, I am walking and cycling again. I still have pain in my knee and hip but my Physical Therapist, Dr. Ngyuen Vu Dinh, helped me progress rapidly and I have not had to work with him for over a month. He really knows his stuff ! Everything has healed well and now I have to rebuild the strength back in my leg. I feel like I’m at around 80 %. I lost over 2.5 % of muscle mass and all my strength in my leg but I’ve been working hard and I’ve come a long ways with a long ways to go. Thank you so much to everyone it means more than you know ! -Ron Commo III

WHAT'S HE RACING NOW? R
ound 7 of the HS series was the farewell ride at the much loved Snake River race in Okeechobee. I was lucky enough to snag a 2015 KX250f from Brian Dinkel. This bike is no one's race bike at the time of the race. It was purchased from the Kosters when Bryce upgraded, and left exactly how he had it. Brian Dinkel is saving it for Justin to race the A class next season. As I'm typing this, Justin just got done beating all the A250 riders from the B250 line at DDR, so I'm sure he's going to have a fine time up in A on this 2015. When I got the bike it had a glazed or contaminated front pads so I had a tough time in practice. Fortunately we found some replacements and Moto4Play got them installed for me before race time. Believe it or not, I've only ever competed on a 250f one other time which was the 2003 or 2004 24hr race. At the time I would have normally used one, they were still in their adolescent stages of R&D and were hard to start when hot. We've come a long way since then and I can see why so many people buy these. It started 1st kick on the line and I rounded the first few corners behind Shawn (also on a 250f) but got overtaken by Clay on his 450 out in the fields and that's where I stayed for
14 www.floridatrailriders.org
the rest of the race. I can't complain about this bike at all. The suspension was far stiffer than I like but surprisingly I didn't get any blisters. One thing to note is the transmission. I'm not sure what to attribute the smooth shifting to. Is it a Kawasaki thing? Is it the Amsoil? Did the Kosters have transmission work done to it? Whatever it was, this bike shifted more smoothly than any other bike. I could upshift at wide open throttle with ease. Think "click" instead of "clank". When the results were posted I got a rude awakening. As fast as I felt on this bike, it just didn't show. 14th overall, beat by a few guys that I can normally best in corrected time. This happened to me back in 2007 when I borrowed my brother's 450. That race I also felt smooth and fast, but had poor results. Maybe I need more time on a Kawasaki to get acquainted with them. I'll say that racing this bike made a 250f a realistic option for me in the future. Big Thanks to The Dinkel team for loaning me this bike. Engine 250\350 Brakes 10/10 Suspension 7/10 as is for me. Maybe other guys like them that stiff.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS How to Make the Most of Your Off-Season Training
A
s the off road racing season winds down, it can be easy to put the racing behind you, start tackling those projects around the house you’ve been neglecting, and take a little time to recover. Allow yourself to rest and take pride in completing another season of racing. I hope that you have been able to stay injury free. Of course, I’m not going to let you rest for long. This is a fitness based article and we need to take some assessments and see what we can improve upon for the next year. If you wait too long, you’ll focus on the highlight reel and not the areas that you need to work on. Let’s break down our strategies going into the summer. In strength and conditioning, it is common to plan out a year or more of training cycles at one time. These are referred to as macro cycles. Macro cycles for most athletes include the off season and in season training programs. Each macro cycle is broken down into meso cycles that can be anywhere from a month to 8 weeks or more depending on the athlete and sport. Meso cycles are broken down into micro cycles that can be written out as weeks of training and days of training. There are phases and waves and all kinds of fun spread sheets that you can make! But what’s important here is to take a solid assessment of where you are in your macro cycle, and what you need to be focusing on during the next 2-3 months of the off season. In general, 2-3 months isn’t a long time to prepare for such a long off road racing season. If you race every weekend, you need to be very focused on your goals during the off season, because hard training during the racing season will be difficult to do. My advice is to take the off season and work to build more work capacity and focus on the areas that need improvement while you have the time to train hard AND recover from that training. Make a short list of your triumphs and pit falls this season. Were there any races where you gassed out? Did you get overheated? Did you favor the longer races or the shorter, faster events? A quick and dirty list will help you to decide what you need to focus on first.

Coach Tyler Coody
Generally, I like to suggest that off season work prioritizes hypertrophy work at the beginning of the training cycle. This is where you can eat a little more, recover well, and most importantly gain strength and size. This might be a step of the process that is shortened or overlooked entirely by endurance athletes, but it is still a very important step of the process in my opinion. One of our most popular training programs at Grenade Fitness is the Gorilla Block and the Gorilla Block 2.0. These programs emphasis mass and strength and would be a great addition to the off season program. Upon completing the hypertrophy work, it would be a good idea to build a large aerobic base. This can be done many ways, but ideally you would incorporate a combination of interval training and steady state aerobic work in the form of running, rowing, biking, or swimming. There would still be a focus on strength training, but less emphasis on mass development and more emphasis on endurance work. The Otter Block is our cutting template and incorporates all of these tactics. The only adjustment I would make is to include you longer distance/duration aerobic work in conjunction with the supplied program. By this time, you would have started to enter the racing season and it would be a good idea to incorporate a combination of all three programs into a general maintenance phase. Our Panda Block program is perfect for this. It has a great combination of strength training and metabolic conditioning that will help keep you from getting too beat up during training and allow you to compete at the highest level. If you are interested in these training programs, visit www. grenadefitness.com/courses-and-programs. All of our programs are FREE downloads. Some are excel templates, some are eBooks, and some are bundles, but they are all free. You can get as many as you like and structure your program according to what you need to work on. I hope you take the time this off season to go after any weaknesses in your fitness training. As always, if I can help you get things dialed in, feel free to email me at coodyt@grenadefitness.com. Get Better! Tyler Coody, MS, CSCS

This past May marked the one year anniversary of Matt's passing and if you live in or around Sarasota you will know for sure that he has not been forgotten. Batchie Strong has become a regular sight on many cars and trucks around town. The heavy rains didn't keep all of his friends and family away from the chance to show Matt that he is missed and give support to the Matthew Batchie Wheeling For Others Foundation whose mission is to provide safety gear in hopes that youth riders will be equipped with the latest and safest gear. Team Dusty Trail Riders
Getting to know...
T
eam DTR “Dusty Trail Riders” was created by Dustin and Ashley Morgan to keep kids "On The Seats And Off The Streets." Their son and a few of his friends showed interest and the rest is history. When asked how it has changed their lives, Dustin replied with, “We are constantly on the go and trying to figure out how we are going to make the next one. Time and Money are the hardest part of it. Seeing the kids grow with a good education and possibly a championship makes it all worth it. Not sure how, but by the grace of God we pull it off every week.” Ashley said, “It has changed their lives drastically. They now prepare for six instead of the three of them. (Ashley, her son Jayten and super step Dad and husband Dustin). Getting them all on the same page all the time is sometimes a struggle. They are four
teenage boys around the same ages. Keeping them organized is a chore and seems to be an impossible task but we manage. We collectively work together

Tell us about the relationship you have with Mr. Dusty and Mrs. Ashley?
Anthony: We are constantly working with them to make everything run smooth when it comes to: loading, unloading, working on the bikes etc. They really do mean a lot to me, they both bend over backwards to keep us off the streets and on the seats. Jayten: They are my parents. I love them and would do anything for them. Gage: My relationship is good. They got me out of trouble and helped me to be a better person and something to look forward to. They mean a lot, they try to keep me out of trouble by keeping me on the seats and off the streets. Tydarius: We are pretty close they’re like family to me.
What do you do to get your groove back when you are racing and not doing so good? Anthony: I take a deep breath and focus on getting the win.
