FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS I

had the chance to visit the WMR Competition Performance facility in Stuart for a birthday bash for our one and only, George Pollard. I guess he thinks he’s getting old and brittle as he stayed away from the birthday hoop la and worked in the shop getting some of our safety crew’s bikes ready for the season. Of course when we all showed up, it was on. Statements about throwing dirt and taking someone wide in a race came up with threats of coming back for a repeat. I don’t know what it is with these young 50 year olds threatening to come back and pick on us mid 60 yr. olds. I guess the throw down is coming this season and could be as early as the fourth or fifth race. All I know is I will have a GoPro on to document the bullying that’s going to take place and so the bench racing doesn’t get to out of control. Of course if it’s wet or muddy nothing will happen as we both will be on the porch! Happy Birthday George! While we were there, Bob Brewster gave us a grand tour of their new WMR facility which has a pristine show room

and a service and parts department to support any type of riding you do. We were then shown what they did back in the state of the art machine shop. As they design, develop and produce the Nihilo Concepts brand, they pride themselves on performance parts that even the KTM factory has taken notice. Their products can be seen on today’s top off road and national MX race bikes and in all levels of competition such as Loretta Lynns and our very own FTR. Being able to participate in a “hands on” explanation on how difficult it is to develop a set of performance foot pegs was mind boggling. The amount of time it takes to develop the correct angles of the mounts, height, angle of the pegs and then positioning them to make the correct cuts takes an unreal amount of time. It was very obvious the amount of pride that is shown here day in and day out as the showroom and adjoining departments were spotless and very well organized. Along with the super knowledgeable staff, the only thing that might have been as good was the spread of food that evening. Nice job Bob and thanks for having us.

Race time. This bike starts extremely fast. I expected a holeshot and I got it. The race started with a few wide open fields and I was worried that Clay and Shawn would get by on their 450s but the 300 was fast enough to hold them off. Although the bike didn’t feel as fast as my dad’s 15 KTM 300 XC-W, I never felt underpowered. I think the bike makes as much or more HP than the KTM, but the electronic power valve does a perfect job of spreading that power evenly. I wasn’t able to hold the lead, but it wasn’t the bike’s fault. I finished 3rd in Plus 30 and 8th overall. My evaluation of the Sherco is extremely positive. I know people will wonder what getting parts is like. Scott ordered a replacement switch for about $47 and it was to his door in two or three days. Engine 9/10. Would be 10/10 if the hit was a little harder. Brakes 10/10. Suspension 10/10. I didn’t even touch clickers. In summary, if you’re bike shopping the Sherco is worth looking at. Thank you to Scott for letting me race it. Up next is Hog Waller on a 2012 GasGas 200.

fast position. It didn’t take any time to get used to this bike. Right away it felt very narrow, responsive, and light. It is definitely the lowest hour bike I’ve ever had the chance to race.

his season I decided to do something cool and try to race a nice variety of bikes. My goal is to race each brand at least once and each engine size. At harescramble number one in Bartow Jacob Gilliam I arrived with a 2016 Sherco 300 SE-R factory edition, courtesy of my generous friend Scott Stone. Scott is tall and had his bar mounts in the forward most position and his bars rolled pretty far forward. He also had two clutch springs removed for easier clutch pull. To prep the bike for the race I rolled the bars back in line with the forks, moved the levers, and reinstalled the clutch springs. During practice I hit a nice big stick that dragged across my arm and broke the fast/slow switch for the electronic power valve. Fortunately it broke it in the

Around The Pits Dear FTR, As you know Gene Jr follows motocross and all motorcycle racing on tv, MXGP included. Well, when we heard they were coming to Florida we ordered tickets right away. We called Bobby Williams of Pro Action Suspension to see if we could hang with him. Bobby said of course and he was working on something special for Gene Jr and Eli Tomac. Unlimited Sports MX needed to be contacted to approve a Side-By-Side to be used to get Gene around. Turned out a storm came in and made a muddy situation in parking area. Track was spared and perfect for racing. Well, it came time to see Eli. He has been Genes favorite for a long time. Bobby arraigned for a private meeting! We couldn't believe it! They had an area roped off to the side of the Kawasaki rig and I was told to go inside of the area. Eli was signing autographs for all his fans and finished up and walked over to us. We really didn't expect this to happen. He took time to talk with us and took a great picture with my buddy. We need to thank of course Bobby Williams. Also we want to thank Kalie from Unlimited Sports MX for allowing us to use the Side-By-Side. Also Kawasaki Doug, who I believe is southeast Rep for Kawasaki, and Steve who is Eli Tomac's PR guy. We met also with Tim Ferry, Chad Reed, and Ricky Carmichael, just to name a few. It was a special day! We even got to give back and help a guy who could not walk in the mud due to a disability. We loaded him up and spent the whole race day with him and his family under our canopy. We ran into Tyler Bergen from FTR days and shedded a few tears talking about days of junior walking the start with Tyler to get a good start at the FTR races. We did this every race. While in Jacksonville we also went to Brooks Rehab to thank all of the nurses, doctors and therapist for their help. These people are amazing! Gene walked for them. We stayed in the same motel where Monica and I stayed while Gene was in hospital last year. We got to know the staff there last year and they got to meet the guy they only heard about. Gene was in bad shape last time we were there. Well we thought we would share our trip with all the great FTR racers and families. Thanks for all the prayers and support through all of this. Gene will be coming to the races this year to watch you crazy people! Ftr rocks!

SIDI CROSSFIRE SRS 2

hen you buy a off-road boot most people look for 3 things; comfort, looks, and, most important, protection. Sidi is a legendary name in the world of two wheeled racing, whether it's bicycles, road racing or off-road racing. They've been around since the 1970's and they no how to make a good boot. Their Crossfire 2's are a full spec, high-end, technical, moto style riding boot with all the special features that make it a stand out boot you'd expect from the company. This boot uses a non-booty design which makes putting it on and taking it off extremely easy. They are very roomy and will accomodate you're favorite moto socks. They are well ventilated and, because of the "sneaker" design, you can actually feel they brake pedal and shift lever. Sidi’s new Dual Flex System uses two pairs of hinges – one at the ankle and one near the calf for maximum flexibility and comfort. With the hinged system, the Sidi Crossfire 2 SR boots have virtually no break-in time, and you are not likely to find a more comfortable boot straight out of the box. Unlike boots of the past without the flexable ankles, you can put them on brand new and hit the track without even thinking about it. The no-stich design of the Crossfire means that practically every part of the boot is replacable including the bolt on sole; Just a srewdiver is all that's needed. The sole of the boot offers a combination of grip on the pegs and the ability to move your feet in corners. From the hard pack, to the intermediate, and sandy conditions, the boots skimmed across the top of the terrain with no troubles whatsoever. In addition to sliding well in corners, the soles of the boot offer an excellent feel on the peg. They grip well in all riding conditions.

One of my favorite features is the adjustable calf sysytem. This allows you to easily fit your shin guards, pant legs or, if you have them, large calves into the boot and stay comfortable. The bottom line is I really like the Sidi Crossfire 2's. There is a newer Crossfire 3 model out which is very similar but offers a protective ankle hyflexation system. Because the 2's are the "older" model you can find these in the $350 range which is worth every penny. Buying good boots should be one area you do not skimp on.

SIDI CROSSFIRE 2 •Material: Technomicro Microfibre •SRS sole - sole replaceable system, compatible with E1 sole and with SMS sole •Replaceable shin plate •Fully adjustable calf area •Toe area covered with a plastic reinforcement •Rigid, shock resistant, anatomically shaped heel •Micro adjustable and replaceable buckle system •Dual flex system upper •Replaceable metatarsus inserts •Assembled and replaceable boot leg, it is stitch free

og Waller, overall, was a good race. The track was prime. It was a mix of everything from fields, whoops, and tight woods, with the only issue being not alot of passing towards the end of the lap. My first lap was a little rough like usual for me but I managed to push hard and I came out with the win by 9 minutes and an extra lap. Thank you to my parents, Gustavo Montoya at Xstream Aircraft Detailing, ACMC for all the hard work to make this race happen, Florida Trail Riders, John Plankey for making sure my motors fresh, and EVERYONE that comes out to cheer me on and support me. FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS GETTING TO KNOW....

Fernando Guzman and

W

here ever there's a Florida Trail Riders event you're sure to find the motoXplanet rig pulling in and loaded with some serious racers. MotoXPlanet owner and race team manager, Fernando Guzman, has been a huge supporter of FTR and anybody who want's to go fast. He can be as serious as they come when it's race time keeping a close eye on his team but he's always willing to crack a smile and talk to anyone who is willing. I got some time to sit with him and learn a little bit more about his passion for off-road motorcycles.

Where are you from Fernando?

I am from Venezuela, born and raised and grew up in South America racing motorcycles at the enduro level in the Andes Mountains. I used to live in Ecuador and that's where I got the Enduro knowledge.

How did you get involved in motorcycles and racing?

Well..the city I used to live in before coming to the United States it was a city orientated one hundred percent to the Enduro riders. So let's say out of 400,000 people that lived in the city I would say about eighty percent of the people were doing some kind of motorcycle event; motocross, enduro, hare scramble, whatever.. So that's how I got involved in it. It was kind of a trend at the moment. It was 1994. I was fourteen years old. My first bike was a Honda XR100, a Christmas present from my dad. Then I used to ride with my friends and bigger bikes came along and at that time we were racing national events in that country and then I moved to the United States in 2001.

What kind of accomplishments did you have racing in South America before you came here?: In the country as an amateur I didn't have anything as big as that. What I did was support for the racers that were at the professional level. So I was always part of some type of support and I have a friend who used to be the national

champion four times in a row, in four consecutive years. I was a specific part of his program and that's how I learned in doing support and servicing motorcycles.

How long have you been involved in FTR?:

Since 1997, as a racer I used to race the Enduro series.

Let's talk a little about MotoXPlanet.com. How did that come about?

Well, I'm a computer guy. I used to be a sales manager of a computer company and I decided to open the company to sell motorcycles, first of all, to fulfill a dream of being closer to the machines that I love and then it is a family matter. We needed to have some time to spend with our kids. Having a full time job with someone else it was going to be impossible for me to do that. Opening the company gave me

the opportunity to have them at the shop, to foster the need of racing, being around motorcycles and having a family to race with in the future. So that was the main motivation to do this.

Did you open it by yourself?

I am the only owner of the company but I have an amazing team. It is a family business. My racers are good friends of mine and we do support for them. Every single racer does something specific for the company. So, for example, Gustavo Hidalgo, who rides Vet A and was third place last season, he's the team manager for national events.

I have another guy who races Trials and he's my events manager. That's how it works. Then my wife, Genmar, is the CFO and my sister is the sales manager.

You're in Miami right?

Yes, we are located in North West Miami, in Dade County; very close to the airport. That's the only location we have but in the future we hope to open more locations. What motorcycle brands do you sell at MotoXPlanet? We sell GasGas. We sell Beta and now we just picked up Sherco. The strongest one we are going to push for 2017-2018 is the GasGas as we have a contingency plan with the factory for the FTR people. Like I said from the beginning, we are more of a support company and we want to foster the need of having more racers using the right support, the right companies to fulfill the have success in motorcycle racing. One of the biggest steps for us is having Ron Commo with us, which is very important for us because he will be a specific key part with the success of the other riders. We are going to do some techniques and training with him so he can show how to get to the point of winning.

Talk about the contingency program with GasGas a little bit more.

We have a contingency program, which basically is orientated of using GasGas motorcycles, any of the models EC's or XC's. Basically it's a package you get when you buy a motorcycle so you can ride with us. That package consists of HBD graphics from our sponsors. We have TF Suspension with us doing the suspension and tune-ups when racing. We have 100% goggles with us. We have clothing that is specific with every rider with name and numbers and we have the logistics system that we have as a team. So, for example, if you live in an area that you don't have access to get to a race we can arrange to go and pick up the motorcycle and get it to the place so you can go ahead and ride for us.

Are you doing some of the national events?

We go to the National Enduro Series every year and we've been

to some GNCC's already and we have plans to do the Full Gas Enduro National Series. Just the East coast series.

Why did you pick Miami as a location for MotoXPLanet?

The main thing for the company being in South Florida is that we sell the idea of FTR to South America; Why it is so important for people in South America to come to Florida instead of California. The main reason is because we have a very market niche of people doing off-road in our state and Miami is the main gate for South America. The main purpose for us doing this is to bring people to understand how we race. What they need to do to accomplish the American racing dream. We have the whole platform for them to achieve this. That's the main goal for us doing FTR in the United States.

good example.

Oriol Mena raced some FTR events. That's a

Yes. Oriol follows the path of bringing people to the United States to race and they start understanding how it's going in America and the type of racing we have and the type of family we have here in Florida. Not only Oriol came. Gustavo Hidalgo is the number three in his country. Gabriel Ramirez is the number five in his country. We have another guy, Nicolas Kutulos. Nicolas is number one in Argentina as of now and he's going to race some of the series with us this season. For 2017-2018 we are going to aim our team to do more enduro's and use hare scrambles as training to get more speed. We feel that our motorcycles are made to race enduro races and we can get a gain out of it. Ron Commo picked up a GasGas and stopped all other motorcycles and he's doing miracles with that thing. He's using a motorcycle that is made to fulfill the enduro racing that we have here. It's a European motorcycle designed to have success in the United States.

Do you want to say anything about MotoXPlanet before we go

MotoXPlanet sells everything that's needed for the Enduro guys. We have Beta, GasGas, and Sherco. We have Klim clothing, Bell helmets, 100% goggles, and services that fulfill customers that are into enduro only. We are a very specific enduro company. We have a full mechanic shop and fulfill the warranties of our machines. We have a program that will deliver the motorcycle for free anywhere in the state of Florida if you buy a motorcycle from us. If you have the warranty program we will go and pick your bike up and bring it to the shop and deliver it back to you for free as well, as long as it's under warranty and you buy it from us.
