The Prez Say’s

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS A

s our season has started, I look forward to getting back with my friends and start telling lies about how we trained all summer long, ate the right foods and how this season is going to be epic. Oh wait those really won’t count as lies, these statements falls into the bench racing category in General rules where it’s permissible to exaggerate or make things up, so all of us can refer back to this rule if we get called out on anything. It seems like the summer has flew by or I have had so much going on that I missed it. Besides trying to get caught up with all that got put on the back burner from the racing season getting in the way, I did have a chance to break away and try to be a regular everyday person. That didn’t work as I wasn’t around my dirtbike buddies and things got boring real quick. I did make a trip to Virginia to visit some old friends from back in the day when Hodaka’s was what we rode. Of course a lot of bench racing came out from 40 years ago and things got deep..real deep. Times like these are why I try and keep my off road family close as so many memories are made that can’t be duplicated. I often think of the times we had what we called the ‘Mens Trip’ which consisted of about 8 dirtbikes and 5 of the closest friends anyone could have roaming all over the northeast looking for places to ride. You ask, only 5 riders and 8 bikes what’s up with that. On most average rides, you can get away with just one spare bike but with this group we needed as many as possible but we couldn’t fit anymore into the trailer. On a more serious note, FTR has lost some family members this

year that has touched a lot of us in different ways. Our friends and family was taken from us way too soon and it just proves the point that life is short and to enjoy every day to the fullest. There’s no time for drama, arguing and letting things drag you down. Rise above all of this and stay positive, productive and be part of something. We all go through certain times and stages in our lives that require discipline and trust. Our children at some point will go through this as it is part of maturing and starting to develop their own personalities. With so many opportunities to make the wrong turn or decision, it is so important that all of us step up and guide our kids to make the right choice. The old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child” is so true. I have some personal friends that are my family and they have some young children that I try and be involved with, whether it is with racing, football or any other sport they need support. Life is very tough and there are consequences for everything we do, some good and some bad. Give our youth the insight, guidance and wisdom to help them make good decisions as all life is is about making decisions. Provide a good foundation for them to build on and let them excel. I hope to see everyone this year come together as a family and make some great memories. As always, Thanks for listening Randy Faul

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS Remembering Gary Mitchell

F

TR was saddened to hear of the tragic accident that took Senior B racer Gary Mitchell away from us. Condolences to his family and his friends. He will be missed around the pits and on the track.

I really don't know what to say. I still can't believe it. Gary was a great man. He always had a smile on his face. I've only known him for a couple years but it feel like I've known him forever. That's just how he was. Him and his brother Jonathan were part of our small group at the races and I looked forward to seeing them on race day. Sundays just won't be the same without him. Mike Youmans The first time I met Gary we were both stuck in a mud hole at the 2014 Samsula Enduro. It took every bit of two hours to get each other out and in that time we learned a lot about each other and our love for this sport. I think it took so long to get out cause we couldn't stop laughing Harry Bilgray I first met Gary about 3 years ago at an FTR race on the Senior C line . We began to talk a little at each race before the start. Eventually he and his family would park with us . At first he was very quiet, but once you got to know him you would quickly learn he was a very good friend. We began riding together on the weekends with his brother Jonathan and man, we just had some good times . Gary was one of the kindest people you could ever meet . He had a strong passion for dirt bikes like the rest of us . One of the things I respected about him the most was that he was very family oriented they all did everything together . You could just tell he loved his family so much. When I got the news it didn't seem real I could not believe it . The one question we all always ask is "Why?"... I don't think we can ever answer that. It seems like bad things always happen to good people . I am honored to have known Gary for the short time that I did, he was a great person and people like him are few and far between . Racing will not be the same . Please keep Jonathan Mitchell and his family in your prayers. They are a very close family . Rest In Peace Gary Mitchell Cade easley Little did i know when I turned 42 and signed up for "Senior C" class that I would meet one of my best friends in my 42 years of existence. People that took my girls and myself in at the races. Friends that I can call or text and meet up with . Gary Mitchell was one of those people . I remember like it was yesterday he came up out of nowhere and asked were the girls are before saying "Hi" to me. He would have given me or anyone the shirt off his back. It's who he was as a person that will make me forever miss him . Not a day has gone by that I dont think of #716 I love you Gary Mitchell My Brother My Friend Brian Kopec

"Gary R.I.P. my friend.. I look forward to sharing the trail with you again someday" Andrew Lake

I met Gary two or three years ago when we raced C Class together. We always battled every race. We had the same speed so every race we were always together on almost every lap. It was very sad for me to be on stage at the awards expo receiving my award that we both tied for. Every race we teased each other going into the points. He beat me some..I beat him some and then we tied. Mariano Alvaro Gary Mitchell was a man who loved all and enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. We always parked together and hung out at the races. He always livened up the pits with his presence. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Harley Anderson

Around The Pits Thank you Big Scrub for putting on a very fun and eventful side x side race. My friend Mickey saw the SxS race advertised on Facebook so he brought his RZR570! So on Saturday morning Mickey came up to me and said "you’re riding with me." I have to admit I was nervous at first. A little time went by and my buddy Brandon said “at least you have a professional driver!!” Nervousness gone... let’s do this thing. 0-800 class here we come! Practice lap was good nice sight lap. Then we got lined up for the races. When the flag dropped we had a bad start, by the time we hit the elevation jump and down the hill we hit first place in our class and was hunting down a RZR900. Boy we were on the gas, Mickey sure can drive. First lap we had a nice groove, and we were gaining on the RZR900. Mind you we are in a RZR570, and we hit the diamondback section that’s where the 900 had us beat. So Mickey and I just focused on our class and making sure no one was coming up from behind. By the time we hit Gatorback drop in I think Mickey forgot all about this bone stock RZR570 and thus he was driving a trophy truck because we started jumping table tops, trying doubles, tapping whoops, and almost peeing my pants in the back woods on the worst whoops ever! Then back into Diamondback where Mickey was railing the turns and putting the pedal to the medal. At the end of lap 3, I saw the checkered flag. I was so excited I could not stop yelling and cheering for how well we did. When the scores came out we won the 0-800 class in the little ole RZR570. On top of that I had one of the best times of my life with a group of the greatest people I know!! The other part is my son and I can both say we took victories at Gatorback Cycle Park! Photos are brought to you by Austin, Jamey, and Becca Purdue. Thanks you BSTR, Gatorback, FTR, and my crew #teamtreedodgers see ya’ll in September!

We want to hear from you . send your letters and race reports to ftrmagazine@dekmar3d.com Its a great way to share your excitement and appreciation for the sport you love.

RUNNING WITH A PURPOSE

hen anyone talks about fitness, running always seems to find a way into the conversation. In fact, I get a lot of people that seek my advice that will say something like, “I want to get in shape… but I can’t run.” I’m not sure when running became synonymous with fitness or weight management. The truth is, cardiovascular training can be done a variety of ways. If years or riding dirt bikes have left your knees and joints a little crusty, you can find another way to get your cardio in! But if you love running as much as I do, and you use running as part of your normal training regimen, you need to read on. First of all, let’s take a close look at running as a form of locomotion. Unlike walking where we have one foot in constant contact with the ground, running involves actually leaving the ground for the purpose to moving more quickly. Also, if a movement requires leaving the ground, it also requires you to return. So in short, we have a jumping and landing position which are VERY important things to become good at. We can drill down further and define the takeoff or “jumping” phase into a falling phase, but more on that later! Children have a natural ability to run. They don’t have to be taught how to run effectively. The problems begin as children start to sit more throughout the day, and as adults typically run less often. In order to prepare ourselves for a long and injury free running program, we should look at 3 things: 1.Preparation 2.Running technique 3.The actual running program Preparation includes footwear selection which is probably an entire article in itself! We published an entire online course about selecting running shoes, and you can get the transcripts and written materials in an eBook format for free at www.grenadefitness.com/courses-and-programs. Another very important aspect of the preparation phase is the warm up. Many recreational runners do not warm up enough or at all prior to their training. A proper dynamic warm up is crucial to keeping nagging injuries as bay! Put together a solid movement based warm up that includes things like arm circles, hip circles, leg swings, walking lunges, jumping rope, skipping, and some light jogging. Spend extra time on the clunky parts! By properly warming up, you can get the most out of your workout, but remember this very basic rule of thumb: the shorter your running workout is, the longer your running warm up needs to be. If you are running sprint intervals you need to warm up for much longer than you would if you are running a 5k. Running technique is another topic that we could write a series of articles on, but for the purpose of this article, you need to know that your running technique matters…and it

matters a lot! I teach the Pose running technique in my one on one sessions and seminars and I think it is a very good system to get people to learn the principles of running and how to run with less effort and more efficiency. There are many different ways to get started learning the Pose running techniques. Start with a search of Dr. Nicholas Romanov or Brian Mackenzie and I’m confident you’ll find some very useful drills and skill work to practice. The basic fundamentals of Pose running is a pose and fall where the feet are constantly landing under the hips. This helps to prevent some dangerous positions as heel striking, and pushing forward (like you’re riding a skateboard). Think of your legs like wheels and make them work in more of a circular pattern rather than an oval like a flat tire.

For more a detailed description, visit www.fit-moto.com and I’ll post a quick running analysis video. And lastly, your running program can make or break you…literally! It’s not all about mileage, I promise you! I ran a half marathon a few years back and the longest training run I did was a 10k. Of course, if you are trying to be a competitive runner, you may want to log a few more miles. But, when using running as a form of training for another event or recreationally, you don’t have to rack up mile after mile. Make use of intervals, repeats, hill sprints, time trials, and tempo runs to keep your running shorter and more intense. This also helps to ensure the quality of your running as well. Check out the full version of this article at www.fit-moto.com for some sample running workouts! I hope this helps to get you thinking about your running technique, and programming. Running can be a valuable skill. Running can also create some nagging overuse injuries if you increase the volume without having the right technique! Please reach out to us if you have any questions. We are always happy to help. Happy running! Get Better. -Tyler Coody, MS, CSCS coodyt@grenadefitness.com

RIDING IN THE BIG COUNTRY O

ne of the great things that goes along with being a member of a local riding club, besides making great friends and being part of the planning and building phase of hosting a Florida Trail Riders Hare Scramble and/or Enduro, has got to be the awesome club rides that you can take part in. No club does it much better than the Big Scrub Trail Riders. About eighteen club members took a very memorable trip out west near Gunnison, Colorado back in July. Reaching elevations upwards of 12,000 feet, the crew took in the beautiful scenery and ,I'm sure, enjoyed the very nice weather than barely made it into the 80's. Looks like they had a great time and brought back some awesome photos to share.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS UT V's Invade FTR!!

by Michael Relyea

F

or the first time in FTR history, the Big Scrub Trail Riders hosted a UTV race during their Gatorback hare scramble race weekend back in May. We had 26 UTV's participate and everybody that raced it will tell you it was an amazing time. Outside of a couple roll overs, the event went down without incident. Just like all other racing we do, racers of all speeds and styles came out and the racing was intense no matter what you were driving and how fast you were doing it. There was a 6 pm UTV fun run, followed by 6:30 practice, and a 7 pm race that lasted 45 minutes. Racers were divided into 5 rows consisting of Open A, Open B, 0-900cc, 0-800cc and Utility (with dump body). FTR was created 42 years ago and over the years we have adapted to meet the needs of our off road racing community. Today, the UTV is the newest generation of race machine, and they are the fastest growing segment of the industry. My goal is to share my enthusiasm around UTV racing and hope to make it a larger part of our organization. The idea of racing UTV's wasn’t even a thought until Vet-B Rider (retired) & Big Scrub member, Mark Thompson, proposed the idea to the club and was instrumental in making it happen. The track at Gatorback is clearly well suited for racing vehicles of all types and the club created a twelve minute loop that provided some amazing racing. The sport UTV's are great for racing but the guys in the utility style UTV's were grinning ear to ear too. Super C Rider Steve Rich, who was a co-pilot in the utility class, said that the race was “ literally the most fun time I’ve had in the FTR.” Steve and his family have been racing for years so hearing that made me realize there’s probably a lot of other FTR members that might enjoy the opportunity to race UTVs. In an ideal world, it would be great if a handful of clubs would be willing to host an UTV event. It would be even better, if they make their intentions known prior to the start of next season so we can organize a shortened UTV race series with championship points. This will also give us time to advertise outside of FTR and bring new people to the races. If UTV racing proves itself to be a successful part of FTR, then down the line it might make sense to add UTVs as a sanctioned series within FTR. But for now, it is probably more appropriate to keep it as a club event similar to pit bike racing and fun runs.

Right after Gatorback, I did a post about UTVs on the FTR Facebook page and it created some good discussion on the topic. Based on the likes and comments, there is clearly support for UTV racing. Some valid concerns were raised, but all I ask is that every FTR racer have an open mind. Primary concerns revolved around safety requirements, track rehab and time constraints. As always, rider safety would be our top priority so developing a list of rules that include things like requiring harnesses over standard seat belts would be an absolute necessity. In terms of trail rehab, everybody will agree that not all clubs have the facilities to host a UTV race and I’ll be the first to admit that I was expecting the UTV's to do a bunch of damage to the track. Believe it or not, if you didn’t know UTV's raced Saturday night, there was very little evidence that they were even on the track. Now I know Gatorback has a lot of hard pack dirt, but even on the Diamond Back track and in the old pine sections, which are both predominantly sugar sand, you couldn’t tell the UTVs raced. My co-pilot, 250 B Rider Brandon Gallo, and I both agreed that the UTV’s actually knocked the edge off some of the whoops and even smoothed out some of the braking bumps. I am not going to sit here and tell you that they didn’t do some damage but it clearly wasn’t what I expected. And I don’t think the concerns raised over track rehab will be that large as issue. In terms of time, we can all agree it’s not always reasonable to host a Saturday night event but there are a bunch of races during the year when there’s plenty of sunlight to make it happen. In the end, we all love a sport that the average person doesn’t understand. I would urge you to give every FTR member the benefit of the doubt and respect each other’s decision to do what we love in a variety of different ways. Whether you realize it or not, every racer has a different experience during a race weekend. That is what makes our organization so great. Some race on two wheels and others are on four, some have brand new bikes, others ride fixer uppers and some even go vintage. There are those who need to win at all cost, and then there are those who just pray they can finish. Some guys strategically count promotion points and others are surprised by a promotion letter. There are riders hoping to take the overall, while others are hoping for their first trophy. Our differences are what make FTR great and I am here today to tell you it doesn’t matter if you race a machine that has handlebars or a steering wheel. We all share the bond of being an off road racer. So please give UTVs a chance. Who knows, if you try it, you might even like it.
