REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Man, it always seems to be busy this time of year. Before continuing, I need to thank everyone who went out to Nelson Ledges to work or compete. At the time we had the largest race at Nelson Ledges so far this year. I need to thank Scott Moller for chairing the event; he did a great job and deserves all of the credit for making the event as good as it was. From the worker favor, the worker lunch to the dinner, it was all good. Unfortunately we had budgeted for 95 cars and only had 73, so when the final results are in I expect that we will lose money on the event. Scott has some ideas that will hopefully bring more cars next year, stay tuned. Two weeks after the Nelson Ledges race the Finger Lakes Region hosted the Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour.
Marnie Soom with the help of Corey Kuhns and a horde of other people put on a great event. There were 247 drivers competing over two days at the Seneca Army Depot. People from the Finger Lakes Region and all over the North East Division helped make the event run. Once again I was proud to be able to call myself a Finger Lakes Region member. The welcome party was rained out on Friday, but even Marnie hasn’t been able to control the weather (at least for Friday), we couldn’t have asked for better weather the rest of the weekend. As many of you are aware, we have been told that this is our last year at he the Depot. As a native of Waterloo I think it has been great to show off the area where I was born and raised. We gave the competitors cards to give to businesses around the area to let the local community that we bring money into the area every year. I’m not sure if this is going to do any good, but maybe we can get somebody to at least talk to us. The double National Race was at the Glen the same weekend as the National Tour. As I have said before, it is unfortunate that two large events took place concurrently on the same weekend less than 40 miles apart. If we have the Tour next year we will have to make sure this doesn’t happen. The nominating committee is in place and will be calling people soon; please consider running for office if they call. I was laid off from my job this past April and with the new job went from five weeks vacation to two once again (this has happened to me twice now). This being the case, I talked to John Sheridan and Marsha and have determined that I can’t run for Area 10 Director. I would like to do the job, but just going to the meetings would take more vacation than I will have next year. So I will be withdrawing from the election and have decided that to run for RE again next year. There are still things I would like to do and unless someone else wants the job I would be proud to lead the region again. So, until next month… Mike

Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes July 6, 2010 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Michael Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:10 p.m. The following are arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order.

August 2010
The June 1, 2010 General Membership Meeting minutes as printed in the July 2010 issue of Top End, were approved on a motion by Lew Giesy, seconded by Bill Bell. Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that our current membership number stands at 472, a decrease of three from June. Twentyseven members were present for the Solo and General Membership meetings. Bill Bell asked how many new members have joined since the first of the year. (There have been 26 new members as shown by information published in Top End. Ed.) Mike has copies of the last membership directory available to those who would like one. A new directory is being planned. Solo Report – Brian Buchman The first out-of-region event, hosted by Western New York Region, was June 27 at Seneca Army Depot (SeAD) site. Hot weather may have contributed to the lower attendance. The Finger Lakes Region is hosting the Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour this coming weekend, July 9 through 11. Come down and show your support by participating. The next regular event is July 25 at SeAD, to be chaired by Shaun Hallam and Bill Conners. The future of SeAD as a site for Solo events is in doubt. The Army will not maintain the fence line after 2011. This has resulted in the Seneca Economic Development committee considering not renting to anyone but the State Police. We will be giving postcards to the participants in the National Tour. They are to be given to businesses, etc. to show the economic impact that we have on the community. It was also noted that an increase in the cost to rent SeAD would be acceptable. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported on the amount in

the checking account. The small amount in the savings account was moved into the checking account. Financial details are available from Elizabeth for review.
Glen Double National The Glen Region’s double national race is coming up. The impact of double nationals was discussed.
All bills presented to date have been paid. They include bills from the Nelson Ledges race and Top End printing and mailing,
Fun One ’10 – John Walsh/Elizabeth Thiel Plans are underway for a typical Fun One with less falderal that we had last year. Elizabeth has arranged for lunch in the Media Center both days.
The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Gene Dinkel, seconded by John Walsh. Rally Report The results for the Relay For Life charity rally run on the Friday of STPR® are published in the July issue of Top End, and on both the Finger Lakes Region's and STPR's websites. Lew Giesy reported that entries were down from the previous year for the Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally® presented by the Citizens and Northern Bank. Results are printed in Top End and may also be found at www.stpr.org and www.rally-america. com. The spectator income from the Super Special was up from last year. The VIP bus package was sold out for Friday and nearly so for Saturday. There may be a small loss for this event. Race Report Westward Ho – Scott Moller Westward Ho was the largest race at Nelson Ledges this season. Total entries were 73, less than the 90 projected. As a result we may lose about $5k for this event. We need to be creative on how to make the event more attractive for competitors. The pursuit race had nine entries, but was close with nearly half of the field on the same lap at the end. The FST competitors were happy with the event. Would another date for future Westward Ho events be feasible? A big THANX from all to Scott for chairing a great event.
Activities – Barb Lissow We will not be having a picnic this year. High points awards will be made at the year-end banquet. Suggestions are welcome. Barb is researching possible venues for the banquet. Old Business Planning continues for the divisional Mini-Convention in November. Neohio Region will present a competition car clinic. The information applies to both race and Solo vehicle setup. Banquet tickets are included in the car clinic package. The menu is finalized. Chris McAllister is working on information for sponsorship of the breaks. Registration, lunch and banquet fees are set. A wine tasting and Chinese auction are planned. The committee has contacted Visit Rochester for activities for those who do not wish to attend seminars and meetings. Everything will be on the website, we want to make this as simple and easy as we can. New Business The current nominating committee consists of John Morris, Gene Dinkel and Dave Avery. Additional members are needed, including someone representing the rally committee. Due to a new job with only two weeks vacation, Mike Toombs will not run for Area 10 Director, but will run again for Regional Executive. Mike Brunner suggested that the race trailer be “refreshed.” Gene Dinkel commented on the number of people attending the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:18 p.m. on a motion by John Walsh, seconded by Scott Moller. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing The rain on Saturday caused the organizers to modify the Subaru Super Special stage at STPR®. Course checking cars were not able to drive through the full course. It was noted that no two-wheel drive cars were able to make it up off of the stage site without being towed. Wet grass can be slick. Problems experienced at Westward Ho included a failure of the sound equipment and a hard drive crash on the timing computer. We found that we could time and score the races with one computer. Tire rub, an unresolved noise and a bad CV joint contributed to Finger Lakes Region members not being at the top of the field during the pursuit race at Nelson Ledges. Dan Thiel’s tire rub was solved by changing rear tires. Scott Moller finally decided to drive the car until whatever was making noise broke, one of the methods of diagnosing a problem. John Walsh reported that rebuilding a half-shaft in the paddock was a new experience.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes June 29, 2010 Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY 14580 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:44 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; John Walsh, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Dave Ciufo, Gene Dinkel, Scott Moller and John Morris, Directors. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the May 25, 2010 board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Scott Moller seconded by Gene Dinkel. Activities Report – Barbara Lissow We will not have a fall picnic this year. The High Points Championship season will end at the end of the calendar year.
New Business A nominating committee needs to be named by the July meeting. The outgoing directors, John Morris and Gene Dinkel, are to be on the committee. At least three other members active in all three competition areas (race, rally and Solo are needed. Old Business The competition clinic is on as part of the November Mini-Con. This will be a classroom session and include the evening banquet. John Walsh has defined chargers for the transponders. We are investigating the sale of excess rental transponders. We should be looking to buy any AMB decoders that are offered for sale. Race Report Westward Ho – Scott Moller A vote of thanks to Scott for the job he did in organizing Westward Ho. 73 different drivers turned times on the track, both Saturday and total. The loss is expected to be around $6,000. The food was well received. The Formula First (FST) group were pleased with the event.
Mike Toombs reported that another race, conducted by another NEDiv region, has been cancelled. The number of regional races is declining. Double national races reduce the number of weekends needed to qualify for the Runoffs®. That makes some of the national races marginal and may cause the number of races to decrease. Scott Moller gave a summary of the competitor survey from last year as part of the discussion on changes the schedule of our racing program.

The timing computer failed causing Timing & Scoring to operate using only one computer. Mylaps.com and result pdf files were completed and sent out post event. Fun One – John Walsh Stewards are being defined. Supplemental regulations and a budget are being prepared. Trophies will be photographs, similar to what was done at last year’s national race. Long sleeve t-shirts are planned to be the “favor.” Rally Report The Relay For Life Charity RoadRally held during the STPR® weekend had 12 teams entered. There was confusion on who was to provide the trophies for this rally. STPR was reviewed. There were 39 entries. The Saturday afternoon rain impacted the Subaru Super Special stage, causing all two-wheel drive cars to be towed out of the course. The July 17 Shortline Series RoadRally will be rescheduled to a later date. Solo Report The Street Survival School had 26 students. There were instructors for each student. The Seneca Army Depot proved to be an excellent site for this school. The results for the May 30 and June 13 events are printed in the July issue of TOP END and are available on the website and the yahoo groups Solo site. The National Solo Tour currently has 248 entries. The status of our ability to use the Seneca Army Depot for 2011 events is undecided. The process of scheduling events and a business case for holding these events needs to be

made. “Business” cards indicating that the customer is competing at SeAD was suggested as a way of defining financial impact on the area.

negotiations with the management at Watkins Glen International regarding issues that occurred during the weekend of the Finger Lakes National race in June. On top of that, the event was canceled on Sunday due to inclement weather; competitors who didn't get to race would receive a partial refund on their entry fee.

Highlights of the Finger Lakes National included an exciting battle for the class win in Showroom Stock B for father and son Gerald Alaimo Sr. and Jr., who diced for the two top positions the entire race, finishing "father-first, son-second" in their Eksten Autoworks-sponsored Mazda Miatas. Mark Dennis took the top podium finish in G Production with true patriotic fashion in his red, white and blue Datsun 510.
In the summer of 2000, a gallon of gasoline cost about $1.50 per gallon, a loaf of white bread was 88 cents and the entry fee for the double national SCCA Club Racing event at Watkins Glen was $200. According to the Chicago Tribune, the median household income for the U.S. that year was $42,148 and the federal government had more than $500 billion than it does today, just 10 years later. Finger Lakes Region of the Sports Car Club of America was celebrating the success of its first regional Club Racing event held at the Nelson Ledges race course in Garrettsville, Ohio, the weekend of July 8-9. Lynn Randall chaired the inaugural "Westward Ho" with about 80 competitors racing, plus an additional 17 who competed in an enduro race.

The region's crown jewel, the Fun One, was named the "Cerino Fun One" in honor of Joe Cerino, one of the region's founding fathers who passed away in 1997. Cerino had chaired many Fun One events during his 40-plus years of active involvement in SCCA. The 35th annual Fun One was chaired by Chris McAllister, assisted by Elizabeth Thiel. As an incentive, the two women initiated special worker appreciation rewards including cash prizes. Solo Chairman Tom Kearney described the beginning of the 2000 season as "slow, but crazy," as the region prepared to host the Castrol 2000 Northeast Division Solo II Championships. Kearney, together with Tina Reeves, put on an event the first weekend in August that put nearly 200 competitors from throughout the East on a challenging course set up at the former Griffis Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y. Later in the month, autocrossers who suffered through the late August heat and humidity were treated to a postevent pool party hosted by Tim Rizzo following the region's event at Valeo. On the RoadRally front, Debbi Segall chaired the traditional Historic New York national Tour rally and the week-long Finger Lakes 1000 rally. With registration filled to capacity, some of the best national-level rally drivers and navigators enjoyed the event that included a scenic tour of the Finger Lakes area with overnight stops in picturesque Olean, N.Y., Wellsboro, Penn. and Bath, N.Y. Rallyists got a taste of winter on August 26 when teams ran a tulip rally in the style of the region's Winter Rally Series. Beginning in Lima, N.Y, the 150-mile evening event included the seasonal roads traditionally used in the Series designed by rallymasters Brian Fallon and John Simonson. There was no down time for rally competitors with events scheduled in September and October to prime folks for the upcoming Winter Rally Series. Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes
July 13, 2010 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. The following discussions are grouped by subject. Winter Rally Series Gary Thomas has expressed an interest in being rallymaster for the second event in the upcoming Winter Rally Series. Other rallymasters are being sought, some arms have almost been twisted enough to elicit a yes. There was discussion about having a training rally prior to the Winter Rally Series. Please direct comments and questions to the Top End editor at cfdresie@cs. com. An alternative is a rally school in which course following, calculations and other items are covered. This could be
held closer to the first event of the Winter Rally Series. An example rally, based on an OMP run, could be published in Top End and put on the website. A major problem encountered when writing a winter rally is finding a place to end the rally. RallyCross The June 19 RallyCross at Perry’s Park suffered a torrential downpour that kept the second run group from getting their second set of runs; competitors will be given a discount on the next event. It was determined that continuing would have damaged the course. Regarding the course, some liked the higher technical level. Ben Gilmore has become the owner of approximately 15 acres of that may be used for a RallyCross course. It may be ready for a winter event. The site is just off of Thruway exit 41. Another venue is being investigated in the Buffalo area. Spring, Summer and Fall Rallies The July 17 Shortline Series rally will be rescheduled due to a work conflict for the rallymaster. Possible dates include September 11. Performance Rally It was noted that the Maine Performance Rally reportedly has 65 entries. Road permits for this event
had not been finalized at the time of STPR®. Miscellaneous Discussions The possibility of placing site references for the Finger Lakes Region events on websites with information on RoadRally, RallyCross, etc. was discussed. Ben Gilmore asked for guidance on creating those links. MaryAnne Shults may have information on the process. Wikipedia is among the websites that are possibilities. Observation of various rally teams shows that a number of different process are used during a TSD rally. These different processes may not handle the different aspects of a rally easily. The difference between a first in class and third in class may be understanding the nuances of rally instructions. The go-kart track that Southern New York used for their events is no longer there. The possibility of running karts is limited by driver weight in certain cases. One of the competitors had a tire come completely off of the rim. The loss of the tire became evident when it passed the car on course. Question: Does a one-armed security guard need a thirty-pound guard cat as an assistant?
